The did good work, but were very unresponsive when I tried to contact them....poor communication. The price was the going rate and the quality of work they did was excellent. I might use them again if I could not find anyone else. They need to have a person in their office who answers the phone.

We were not in a rush and they accommodated our schedule quite nicely. We had bids from 4 other providers and choose them not because they were the cheapest (they were the third least expensive) but because they were certified by the James Hardie Company and there is a pretty good warranty that applies if we use a certified installer.
They showed up early every day and worked til dusk and the crews are not day laborers but are on salary with the company. Installing fiber cement products is fairly tricky and the crews were all experienced and that showed from day one. The pre-installation consults and detail explanation of the work were terrific. The crews paid attention to all the details too and cleaned up each day to a spotless condition. They cam back several times after completion to ask if we had any problems or needed something redone. Our punch list was amazingly small and overall they rated and A+ , to us they were the best. The owner of the company made many visits to our site as did the salesman and of course the crew chief.
The skill and deft workmanship of the crews was worth the little extra cost and added to our sense of security along with the Hardie warranty.
We used our deal and then some. We had more work then could be completed with the purchase of the deal. First I would like to say we were extremely pleased with Good Guys Contracting. The president, Dave, was professional and was a delight to work with. He kept us apprised of the work being done and what needed to be done in order for the job to be done correctly. Our home is approximately 47 yrs. old, so when work began that we asked to be done was started, they ran into issues we did know existed. Dave advised us what needed to be done and what it would cost before it was done. Nothing came as a surprise when we received the final bill. The workers on site, Ted and Kyle worked diligently and professionally, arriving at 8;00am and finishing up at 5;00-6:00pm. We would highly recommend yhem to our family, friends and others looking for a recommendation.
Thank You, Pat & Maryellen MacDonnell
I purchased a Big Deal coupon for $299 A General Contractor for a Full Day (working 8hrs) to finish a remodle of a small office space at my house that I started. What I needed to finish it off was to build a floor-to-ceiling bookcase, cut some shelfs for the closet, and add a plank of wood to the floor since I widened the doorway and installed a new door. I planned to stain the bookcase myself.
It took almost a week to get someone on the phone to set up the appointment, buy when I did speak with the owner he was nice, and spent time on the phone with me to understand what I wanted to do. I sent him a drawing of how I wanted the bookcase, and was able to get an appointment 2 weeks later with his "best guy" Mike.
Mike arrived early (about 730am). I showed him the space, he had the drawing, and he went straight to work. He showed me pictures of a similar job and made some suggestions on some minor changes to the bookcase that would make it stronger, which was very thoughtful. He worked like a machine, only stopping to drink water and use the bathroom a few times. He did a great job. The only thing negative was I had to pay about $300 for overtime since it exceeded the 8hrs to finish the job completly (probably my fault, I underestimated the time it would take, should have bought 2 coupons), and he didnt have a certain precistion tool to cut the plank of wood for the floor so it would fit neatly; but he did the best he could and it turned decent. He made some suggestions on how to touch it up so it would be less noticable.
Overall my experience with Good Guys was very good. I would hire them again. Mike was nice, informative, and a hard worker.
Great job,
David (the owner), Greg and Ted did a great job. We are very pleased with work. Will use them in future. They were not the cheapest but if you want quality you need to pay a bit extra. Professional and courteous.
I was not thrilled when we made the apt because he called me the night before to cancel, due to scheduling conflict. I understood, but it was not convenient that I took a day off from work for that original appointment. The scheduling seemed a bit disorganized. They sent me a new hire, which I thought was kind of strange, as they did not know his work very well. We had a major installation issue, and had to hire someone else to repair it. We had more man hours left for our coupon, so I had to request they send a different employee for the next phase. The owner sent the same employee back to me.

When they said they would be here they were here and that's very big in my book. They were very reliable and I would recommend them. If you had a problem with anything they came back and fixed it. There were no questions asked because they would always come back. They gave me exactly what I paid for and went above and beyond. Their price was great.

In the beginning we were very pleased with the company, however once the work started... or I should say was first delayed... our experience went downhill fast. We had to have the owner come back multiple times as the work was not completed to our expectations (or anyone's) and repairs required (we came home one day and found that we could not open the garage door after they had repaired the roof - they were supposedly finished with the work). We feel that we were over charged for certain items and that other parts of the "remodel" were never completed to our standards. Example, one item that we had requested to be done was to have the header in the stairwell to our basement lifted up and we were quoted and contracted on a price (all work done together). The handymen that came on the Saturday after we had been rescheduled twice, while nice, cut the header, found that there was a pipe, and left it entirely exposed. Additionally, we waited for the plumber to arrive to work on our gas line, which once they arrived he found that it was MUCH easier to do AND that he required a fraction of the black piping that they initially estimated. There was no reduction taken off for the usage of less materials (I believe we paid $800 for less than 2 hours of work and a fraction of the materials estimated would be needed, about 1/10th of the piping estimated). Truthfully, I believe that our project was simply too small for them - that the company usually does much larger and more pricey projects and therefore we were squeezed in between 2 larger jobs. Because of this, I do not feel that we received the attention we desired or deserved and that things were left, for all intents and purposes, incomplete.
Response from Good Guys Contracting
"We are sorry to hear that this customer feels that they were overcharged. Unfortunately most of this customers pain was in the fact that they didn't want to pay for the plumbing work. We use FULLY licensed plumbers and the down side is that sometimes it may seem that they charge a lot of money for small jobs. We just pass along this expense to the customer. While you can get a handyman to sometimes to plumbing we just don't like to take that risk."

We purchased a coupon for a day of work. We had several things that
needed to be completed, including replacing hardware on doors and
lights, mailbox, etc. The work was completed but the door knob fell off
after the guy left. He needed to come back and fix it. Work was
completed but NOT to our standards.
I spoke at length with David from Good Guys regarding what could be done right after buying a coupon. David was patient and understanding. Looking back, we probably should have purchased an additional coupon and scheduled the work immediately, but hindsight is 20/20, right? Hurricane Sandy delayed our plans because we had an extra person staying with us who had no power at home. Seeing as that we have only one bathroom, having work done was not possible until after things returned to normal.
We got started on November 27. Overall the project took two full days. I was immediately presented with the contract information on Day 1, which was wonderful to see everything in writing. The day they started we already had the tile on hand. After discussion with Ralph, I had to go out to get grout, tiles to line the wall (replacing existing tile), and a new saddle. I wish I had known what I needed to have on hand to start, but, I guess it was better to purchase exactly what was needed. I was in contact with David (back in the Good Guys office) at the end of Day 1 and I was impressed with his responsiveness. Day 2 started a little late and ended a little late. I thought the demo on Day 1 would be the worst mess, but, grout mixing on Day 2 turned out to be even messier as far as dust clean up.
On Day 2 a decision was made to keep the subfloor and original floor (beneath the tile we were replacing) and put the new tile on top -- much cleaner, cheaper, and it just made sense since the original floor was in good condition. I couldn't have been happier with that decision.
The door is fine, the caulking fine, the floor fine. I say fine because some grout lines are uneven (some thicker than others) and in one spot near the tub, there was something small stuck in the grout, and after it was removed, there is a gauge in the grout. On two tiles there are tiny chips. We did exactly as Ralph suggested and we didn't walk in the bathroom for 24 hours. The uneven grout lines are a little disappointing.
I felt comfortable having Ralph and Antonio in my home. David was wonderful to speak with from start to finish.
They did not finish the speckling or painting and the custom cabinet that they installed in now warped. They damaged the marble countertops and did not return to repair them. They also started to install a generator but did not finish so we now have a large hole in the backyard and a generator sitting next to it waiting to be completed. They are no longer returning my phone calls, I do not know what has happened to the company.

It went quietly and efficiently and looks great. I had expected the work to start a week or so earlier but Hurricane Sandy may have been responsible for the delay. Two workers spent three days and a bit of a 4th day doing the work
I purchased a coupon for for a full days labor(8 hours) for 1 man back in July. Been trying for several months to get an appointment for an estimate on putting in an attic pulldown stairs and a plywood floor above my garage. Finally was contacted by Mike Louer and told him what I wanted and he said he would email the estimate. I received my estimate and was happy with the price. I told him to set up a date for the work. This was October 2nd when I got the estimate. Mike emailed me back with an opening on October 16th. I told him, lets do it. Well October 16th arrived, it was 8am, nobody here. Ok, I figured they got lost, no big deal. They showed up at 8:25. I met Ralph and his partner(forgot his name). They were very professional. I went over with Ralph what I wanted and he said no problem. They worked till about 1:30-2:00. During the course of the day I brought them coffee. I was pleased with the finished product, I paid Ralph and they left. Unfortunitely, I did not have another 2 hours worth of work for them to do so I was out 4 hours total work. I was still pleased with what they did and I would use them again.

The workers were very detailed oriented and overcame some "interesting" construction efforts of the prior owner. I would hire them again in a minute. Tasks that would have taken us 10 plus hours without the quality end result they were done in 4 hours.
My feedback is only for Angie's list in how the purchase of coupons are used. I provided Angie's List my feedback as there was only issues on how we as customers purchase these coupons before the work even has started let alone completed. So in essence you purchase the coupons and then schedule the work which did take some time as the company must come out to the home to review the work and then from there schedule the actual date of work to be performed.
Overall... I have learned from this process and Good Guys Contracting did a great job providing the services we needed around the home. The installation of our French Doors was superb and the building of a disabled ramp, and patio repairs was great. Two Thumbs up.
