Unable to upload photos, see Google. Terrible experience. Problem not fixed, property damaged, property stolen and no response. Unable to charge back payment so will be suing to pursue resolution along with assisting HOA and management company suing for damage to neighborhood property. Had standing water in my back yard, see pictures below for the "fixed" solution. Still 3"+ standing water. Had planned to seed grass but due to the problem not being fixed having to spend additional for sod as seed will get washed away. Our street was just refinished 2 weeks prior to this job. The street was gouged and torn up right in front of our house. There's a permanent white stain for the rock and shell filled soil that was dumped on the street. It was literally brand new weeks before. One of our HOA board stopped by to address the issue, this was before the damage was done. Even after this road was still torn up. See pictures. I specifically said we needed CLEAN fill dirt as we have small children and other kids come over regularly. This was agreed to. The soil was filled with large shells and rocks. See pictures. I threw a rock out before taking a picture that was 10" long by 5" thick. First time they were out damaged my 4 month old brand new vinyl fence. This was before I knew everything I knew now. I let them turn the fence panel around so we couldn't see it instead of replacing it. Sprinkler system damaged, was told the pipe was only 2-3" below surface and why it was damaged. See picture at 5" below ground, this was after soil had already been removed from the surface. This was never fixed. In Florida standard install is 6" below surface so depth was never an issue. Just ignorance. The crew used my wheel barrow without asking, broke the handle off of it and just left it in the yard for me to find the next day. This was the next day after they came back a second time to fix the original problem that was never fixed. The crew took my yard tool. I texted the owner to let him know, twice, never responded. I had the sprinkler line fixed, wheel barrow fixed and bought my own grade rake and went out to try and fix the numerous issues with the grading job. I'm unable to charge back form of payment, I always put things on credit cards for protection but was given a discount for paying in cash(tax evasion?) so against my normal practice I did. Since I may such a poor choice only left route is suing in personal claims court for myself and HOA/management company will be taking their own route. We met with the owner, Steve, at a mutually agreeable time. He was running a little late but called to let us know. We went over every aspect of the job as we did not want any hidden fees. As promised, Steve did the measuring and sent us a detailed invoice the following day. He gave us the name of the paver company and we chose the pavers on-site. We were required to pay for the pavers, in advance, as they are special ordered for each customer. The actual work was supposed to begin the following week as we had been "on the list". Steve is a VERY busy man. Much to our chagrin, the company who makes the pavers of our choice, had a mishap and the mold was broken/damaged and required two weeks to be up and running. Finally, the pavers arrived. Meanwhile, we had changed a couple of things which required a second delivery of pavers. We could have saved ourselves another steep delivery charge had we been better organized! The owner and crew of two arrived on the appointed day and spent two days removing the concrete, which was no small task as the front porch area and around the garage doors had to be done by hand and with sledge hammers. They were careful to protect our new front doors and new garage doors. Bad planning on our part, again! The concrete chunks were loaded by hand and taken away in several truck loads. Then came the rains. The muddy mess...thanks Mother Nature...had to be re-graded before the two dump truck loads of crushed concrete could be applied. They lost two days of work as we were having nearby lightning strikes. A young man by the name of Imo was responsible for overseeing things, as well as doing the actual pavers installation himself. The company owner came every day to check on the progress and to bring help as needed or to do the hard labor himself. Impressive. What was to be a two week job turned into a little over three weeks, through the fault of no one. The final sand-washing and sod laying (two pallets) were finished yesterday and the work is absolutely beautiful. They will return in October to re-sand any needed areas, light pressure wash and seal. There were no added expenses but the wash and seal will be a separate charge as it is recommended but optional. It would be a mistake not to as it brings out the paver colors and protects them for approx. 4 years, under normal wear and tear.
As an aside, residents of our subdivision have been interested in watching the progress. Steve now has added two more driveways in the neighborhood to his "wait list" as our residents are very impressed with his work. Needless to say, we are more than happy with this experience and would recommend this company to anyone for their hardscape needs.
When I met with Steve, he was very professional and knowledgeable. He told me what needed to be done on the job including the dry well (which had not been suggested by other professionals). He let me know what options were available for pavers and when I could get them based on supply and production schedules. He said that he could remove the existing concrete slab as part of the project as well.
When the workers came to do the project they found that the existing patio slab was 2-3 feet thick. The contacted Steve who said that they would either need to increase the price and extend the timeline of the project because of all of the extra work, or they could pave over the slab with no extra expense and still get the job done in a day. I opted for the latter due to time and cost considerations.
The project came out beautifully! The water drains better than it ever has in my side yard and the pavers remain level and beautiful. I would highly recommend Grass Roots Lawn and Landscape to anyone. In fact, I have already recommended their paving services to a friend and their landscaping services to our homeowners association because I had such a positive and professional experience with them.
We had a swampy enclosed area for our backyard and have never really been able to enjoy it. Steve came out and gave us an estimate for installing pavers, including a drainage system. I told him that I would like the work completed by the following Friday, or that it would have to wait another month, because we were having guests over. He told me that because it was a relatively small job that they could get it done by Friday. Mike and Joe installed the pavers, they had a great attitude and did a very professional job. The job wasn't complete by Friday, but the pavers were all down and the patio was usable. It looked beautiful. They came back the following week and completed the job. We are very happy that now our enclosed patio looks nice and is a usable area.
After removing a very large tree from our property we were in need of replacing our landscaping in our front yard. At the same time we decided that it was the perfect time to extend our driveway. After collecting several estimates we decided to go with Grass Roots Lawn and Landscape (GRLand L). Steve Stranaland, owner, gave us an initial good impression but in the end we were not satisfied with his work, estimate, follow through or professionalism.
The job was done in 2 seperate stages. The first stage was for the driveway extension which GRLand L charged us $1,225 for all parts and installation/labor. For the extension of the driveway they had a cement truck waiting in front of the house before they had a foundation built out. You could really see that the foundation job was poorly done and clearly rushed. On our estimate Steve stated that there would be a wire mesh used to provide support and strength for the concrete driveway, however they only added the mesh after I made a comment to the laborers. Quite frankly, the laborers looked like they had very little experience with concrete installation.
For the grass, the sod was delivered one day early and before the ground was properly prepared for installation. In addition, we were quoted (on the estimate) that we would be receiving 6 pallets of sod yet we were only brougth 5 pallets. After having the discussion with Steve he didn't have an excuse and the following day he brought 10 pieces of DRY sod to compensate for the entire pallet. In other words, we were charged for sod and installation on something we did not receive.
On the day of the installation, they only brought out one laborer (Jack) to prepare the ground and lay the sod. Jack actually was very kind, polite and hardworking. However, the work was too much for him and he had to call for assistance after 6 hours of work. After his call two more laborers came to assist. Being that it was late on a Friday afternoon the laborers that came to help were only talking about how it was Friday and they were ready to go home for the weekend. Obviously, it was represented in the rushed job and poor quality that they did.
All in all, we feel this was a horrible experience and will never return to GRLand L for any future services nor will we be recommending them. Steve did not deliver on his estimate, had poor professional and was inconsistent with his word.
Response from Grass Roots Lawn & Landscape LLC
"We at Grass Roots aim to please. Sometimes a job will not go as smooth as possible or doesn't turn out exactly like you would have hoped. Well this was one of those jobs. It started out with a heavy language barrier. Also, the customer did not want to have a permit for the driveway extension needed for the job. As for the grass, usually we can lay 2400sqft of grass in 6 hours for 1 guy. This was not the case. The customer switch to Bahia instead of St. Augustine. The grass came to us in pieces which the customer did not like, but sometime that is how Bahia comes. We tried to go over and beyond what was in the contract, but sometimes we cannot please everyone. Bottom line, the customer received all the grass that they wanted and I gave them some extra, their driveway was completed exactly how they wanted, the drainage was completed exactly how they wanted it. I also, cut in all their new flower beds and changed some irrigation not in the contract to try and please them. Sorry to see such a review for my company when all other customers are pleased."
