"I have been in the alarm industry for more than 20 years and worked for several of the major companies. I can assure you that our contract at Guardian is very standard for the industry. I encourage people to read what they are signing before they sign it and understand it. Our industry is somewhat unique in that we typically do not realize any profit whatsoever until after the original agreement is completed due to the high cost of what people now have come to expect for FREE. This is a great deal for the consumer, but please understand that the system that was installed in your home, would likely have cost in the $1,000’s several years ago. If you are a business person, understanding this can help you appreciate your alarm company’s position. All alarm contracts have an automatic renewal period on their original agreement that you sign. Sometimes this is something that can be negotiated at the time of the signing. You should discuss this with your sales representative. Regarding the charges for the repair, I looked at the account and found that this was due to a remodel. If it had been due to equipment failure, there would have been no charge for the service. Some other major companies will charge a “trip fee” for any service call, even if it had been covered under warranty. There again… read before you sign. Guardian, however does not charge any “trip fee” for a warranty call. If you did not opt for the warranty agreement, or for most “remodel” or other non warranty repairs, Guardian has the lowest rates that I have seen in the industry. Much less than your plumber or appliance repairman most likely."
