The work was adequate. They took far too long. 5 months. It ended in October. After reviewing the contract, we recognized there was an overpayment. The owner promised to get me a check. Which he did...it was returned for insufficient funds! I have not received the money. He is completely unethical!!! Be very very careful if you choose them for their work. You will end up spending much more than anticipated!

I first had contact with GW Construction on 04/11/2016, at this meeting I met with Matt and Michael. Matt represented himself as a co-owner of GW Construction and Michael claimed to be a licensed project coordinator for GW Const. Matt prepared a written contract for us to review and sign. The contract covered the remodel of the kitchen, guest bathroom, master bathroom, and refinishing of our sunroom. I felt that the contract was vague and lacked detail. His handwriting was to the point of being unreadable. I made a supplemental agreement to the contract, which contained a little more detail than Matt's contract, which he signed. Matt made numerous claims and verbal statements about the project and his company, such as items at no charge, being an A+ accredited company with the BBB, truth is GW Const. has an F rating. That he did not use subcontractors all of his workers were employees of GW Const., another lie, GW Const. has no employees. They only use subcontractors, watch out for liens against your property. He also claimed that all work would be done and performed to not just the highest standard but to all building code regulations.
The project was to start with the guest bathroom. This crew was not so good, after the first few days of the remodel, the crew had been late, and failed to show up at all another day. I had made Matt aware of the problem. He had a talk with the foreman of the crew and promised me it would not happen again. The next day they failed to show, Matt fired the entire crew. I was later contacted by the owner of this subcontracting company, he claimed that Matt was refusing to pay him for the work that he had performed, again watch for liens.
In the contract supplemental I had requested several items be done a certain way. The one item that I stressed to Matt was that I wanted all work performed to meet building code and to pull building permits. A permit from the City of La Mesa was obtained for the hot mop of the shower floor. However a permit was not obtained for the relocation of the electrical outlets or switch boxes, nor the new sewer line from the master bath to the main outlet line. The toilet in the master bath is not installed to code. It is placed with a clearance of 12 inches from the center of the toilet to the side of the vanity, and 21 ½ inches from the center to the exterior wall. Matt claims this is because we had a wider vanity installed, we did purchase a wider vanity, had a 36? and changed to a 48? vanity. This decision was made after consulting with GW Const. They even picked up the vanity for us from Lowes. Matt now wants $1,680.00 to move the toilet to meet code. I am the homeowner not the builder, if there was going to be an issue, shouldn?t the contractor have estimated and completed a layout to know if everything would fit. And if not why wasn?t I made aware of the problem prior to them installing the tile floor and the toilet.
I had also requested that ducting be installed onto the bathroom vent fan in both bathrooms, still there is no venting for the fans to the outside. Matt has told me that I don?t need the venting because there is a window in each bath. This may be so, but it is what I requested. So now the bathroom vent exits directly into the attic, this is not what I requested or what I was charged for. Matt had
stated that he was going to upgrade my electrical outlets by installing GFCI outlets. He did do this, however the outlets no not work as a true GFCI outlet. Matt, when questioned stated that the outlets were upgraded to accept a 3 prong plug, but the plugs were not grounded to make them a true GFCI outlet.
The tile work in both bathrooms is totally unacceptable. None of the tile work in either bath has a finished edge, the tile edges are exposed and sharp. Tiles are not trimmed with a bullnose tile or a metal trim piece. The edges of the tile are uneven, rough and I am certain sharp enough to cut a finger or hand. Matt claims that I provided the tile, and this is correct, and that if I had wanted bullnose trim I should have provided the bullnose tile. Once again, why wasn?t I told that I should use bullnose trim so the tile would be safer and have a much nicer appearance. The grout in the master bath is flaking out, new pieces every day and every time the shower is used. Another contractor viewed the job and has told me that the tile was installed without using a cement board base. After confronting GW Const.
about this problem, I?ve been told that they did and that they have pictures to prove such. I have asked several times for GW Const. to provide me the pictures to view, as of this date I still have not seen one picture.
I have also asked for a cost break down of the project, a list of subcontractors used on the job, a signed lien release from the subs, still to this day GW Const. has refused to provide me with my requested items. There are many more issues that I have not gone into in this review. I have given GW Const. so many opportunities to work with me on resolving these problems and bring the project up to code. That now it has gotten to the point that I do not want GW Const. in my home. My last offer I made was to hire another contractor that we both agreed to and have the repairs made at GW Const. expense.
I have now been contacted by another subcontractor that installed the shower enclosure. Matt has also refused to pay this sub for his labor and materials. This is even after Matt approved and signed the approval and contract with the sub. So to avoid a lien I have paid the sub out of my own pocket. A total sum of $1,205.00 above what GW Const. had already been paid and charged. Matt's story to this is, that the glass guy is a friend, that I can pay him myself. Doesn't matter if he is a friend to me or not, the man did the work, supplied the materials and deserved to be paid, plus Matt had approved the work and payment then reneged.
GW Const. is now threatening to place a lien on my property and start legal action against me for breach of contract, they also claim I owe them for the entire project, which is all false. The breach of contract is because I terminated the contract and refused to allow GW Const. to proceed with the remodel of my kitchen and sunroom till the other issues were repaired and fixed.
I have now filed a formal complaint with the Contractor's State Licensing Board. I am waiting to see what this agency will do at this point. As I see it, Matt and GW Const. are the most unscrupulous, unethical and misleading outfit I have ever seen or heard about. The work they do is shoddy, unacceptable and downright awful, they do not follow building codes, do not have or obtain the right permits. GW Const. will also try to hold you up for additional charges all the time. I feel pretty certain that criminal charges will also be charged against Matt and GW Const..
Do your homework, research each and every person that you have contact with that is affiliated with Matt or Noli Const. dba GW Const. Don't just stop with the Contractor's Board, look deeper into Matt's past. I sure the h*** wish that I had done so, hindsight is 20/20 right...there is so much more that I could say. The best advice I have is RUN LIKE H*** AND DON'T SLOW DOWN Update to review: These people have now filed a civil action against me because I gave them a negative review on Yelp, Facebook and Angie's List. They are not happy with just filing a law suit against me, but are now stalking me. This company and its employees and or co-owners have no idea what being a professional is. They have been seen by neighbors, but I also have them on video. GW Const., your two bit intimidation is not going to cause me to remove my reviews, pay to repair my home that you messed up and then we can talk.

Please check ID before hiring. All paperwork seemed in order, but when I checked later the man who supervised the work is not listed on the State Contractor's License Board as personnel. I wrote a check for the final payment before the work was done because the man said his sister was ill and he had to fly to go see her. (I should know better) I've been calling GW Construction and have not gotten anything but an answering machine, and now I'm worried that I may have been dealing with the MATAN BEN-SHLUSH group....not GW Construction.

Luigi and Kevin have called me around 5 times in a matter of 3 days. I have told them several times I am getting a few other estimates and have not made up my mind yet and will decide after getting the other proposals. I would appreciate if they would not call me anymore. There's no reason for them to call me again. They've done their part by giving me the proposal, now it is up to me to decide who I want to go with and when I'm ready to get the work done.

It went fine. The initial guy that came out was not very anxious to be doing the work. It becomes really apparent and it's understandable that they are looking to do more work than what the coupon is for. Sometimes they act at a high customer service level with that, sometimes they don't and he just didn't come off very polished. I am a real estate broker so I'm looking for these types of companies to refer to clients all the time so I definitely pay attention to that because if I'm going to refer somebody out, I need them to be a good reflection of me. He wasn't too excited to be there for just the job I was hiring him for, but the workers who came out did a good job. They were on time. I wouldn't refer them out because of the initial contact with the first guy not being very interested in being there.

I contacted GW Construction to replace some facia boards at my home that were termite damaged. They had a special advertised on Angies List for $99 for 4 hours of work, and this job was easily under 4 hours. First, I had to call and email to get the attention of someone at the company, after I had already paid via Angies List. The delay in getting in contact put the work into a rain period, so I had to duct tape the exposed areas to keep water from penetrating the house in the meantime. Finally, a "Quality Supervisor" came to the house and looked at the project, commenting that the job would require the worker to climb a ladder and that could be an issue. By this time I had already purchased all the replacement lumber and removed all the termite damaged wood myself. By the next week, I had replaced all the damaged wood myself and caulked the lower sections because another storm was predicted and I was tired of waiting for GW Construction to schedule a worker. Finally, a worker was scheduled to come out and he did a nice job applying the last bit of caulking on the upper section (yes - while on a ladder). The job took him less than an hour, so I essentially paid $99 for an hour of caulking work. I did the painting (upper and lower) myself.
I would not recommend this company to anyone.

"hello [member name removed] thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience with us, good or bad we must point out the a few things that you did not mention on here when Matt (supervisor) came out to do the pre inspection, you had mentioned to us that you are a handyman yourself and that the reason you bought this coupon was for the pure reason of you wanting us to get this work done since it so high up on the second floor you had requested us to only do that portion as you already had done most of demo and needed us to do the part you could/would not do on your own although you have a ladder since you are a handyman yourself also, according to our records, the person that came out worked more like 2 to 3 hours on your property when we called to follow up with you about the experience, you said that he did exactly what you wanted him to do and that you were very satisfied with what he did (even on this review you mentioned that as well) and you also said you would recommended us to your customers that needed bigger jobs that you could not handle it really affects our business as contractor to contractor when you put a review without all the correct details (again, good or bad) we would love to repair, replace any bad work or to send someone out so you can have a better experience with us please let us know if there is anything else we can do, other than what we did which was EXACTLY what you asked us to do thank you again"
