DO NOT HIRE! My experience with Danielle and Justin from Hamilton Hardwood was a nightmare. They are unreliable, unprofessional, and untruthful; a classic example of over-promising and under-delivering. They were unable to complete the task I hired them to do and I paid an above-average price for low-quality work. As a result, I had to hire another flooring company to correct/finish the job and I incurred additional expenses because of their delays. From the beginning, I told Danielle I was on a tight schedule and my job needed to be completed in (maximum) 11 days with a high-level of quality. Danielle said she saw no reason why they couldn't complete my project in 11 days. She said they could start my project on 10/3 with a completion date no later than 10/13. On 09/26, I gave Danielle a check for $7,813 (50% deposit). I told her other work was being done concurrently; she said it wouldn’t be a problem. Monday, 10/3, the day Danielle and Justin were supposed to start, I went to my house ~5:30 pm and saw that no work had been started. I text Danielle; she said they decided to work a late-shift so they could stay out of everyone’s way and not distract others with their noisy equipment. They said they should be at the house in 30 minutes. I told her to make sure my schedule was not impacted. Danielle said not to worry, my project would be done on time. During the first week, I regularly checked on their progress to make sure everything was running smoothly. Danielle always said everything was going well and they had no issues working with/around the other contractors. When I went to the house on Saturday, 10/8, I was shocked. There was a garbage bag on my front lawn, my slate floor was not protected, and there was gunk everywhere, including on my newly installed, granite countertops. What was worse, however; was the fact that little progress had been made. The family room install was not even 25% complete! I text Danielle to express my concerns re: current status and it didn’t seem likely that she and Justin would finish by next Thursday, 10/13. I received the usual ‘all is well, don’t worry’ response. Danielle had an explanation for everything: no room in their van to haul away the garbage bag; the gunk would clean up easily, etc. She said although it looked like there was a lot left to do, she and Justin felt good about their status. I told her if they needed the house to themselves to finish the job to let me know. Danielle said it was not necessary; she and Justin would be able to work it out with the contractors themselves, and the contractors had been easy to work around. The second week, I went to my house every day to check. On Monday, I arrived at 7:30 pm. No one was there and I couldn’t see much progress made since Saturday. I called Danielle – no answer. I followed up with two texts: (1) I asked where they were and (2) asked what was going on b/c no one had been at the house yet. I waited until 9:15 pm but no one showed up. I received a text from Danielle around 9:40 pm saying her phone was off. She said they worked late and were just getting themselves ready to return. Really – at 10 pm?! On Wednesday, 10/12, the day before the job was supposed to be done as originally agreed-upon, I arrived at the house at 7:15 pm - Danielle and Justin weren’t there. I called; they said they were 40 minutes out. They didn’t show up until 9:20 pm. When I said there was no way the floors would be done by tomorrow, Danielle started yelling at me, saying she’s the hardwood floor “expert”, she knows how long it takes to finish a job, and they would be done by tomorrow, etc. Her unprofessionalism caught me off-guard b/c I was not yelling. Then, Justin came over and the whole conversation escalated until I finally asked them to go outside and compose themselves. They came back, calmer, so we could discuss when this job would be done. They said they could finish the next day. Once I said it was impossible, Justin finally conceded and said the job would be done by Friday, 10/14. I went to the house on Thursday evening (10/13) and again, no real progress. Danielle stayed in the van the entire time I was there (about one hour). Justin talked to me for a little bit but also went back to the van. When I left, they both were still sitting in the van. Friday, 10/14 - the day everything is supposed to be done. I go to my house and the floors still aren’t done. Danielle isn’t at the house but I see two new men. One guy was outside, in my driveway, with quarter round molding laying on the back of his pickup bed. I asked him if he was here to help Danielle and Justin. He laughed and said he knew nothing about hardwood floors. He’s their neighbor (disabled veteran) and was asked to help them sand/water-pop the quarter molding. I introduced myself to the second guy, who “coincidently” has the same name of an employee that Danielle and Justin previously told me they fired b/c they could no longer trust him in their client’s home. I spoke with Justin, who now tells me the floors will be done tomorrow, Saturday, 10/15. At this point, I am extremely frustrated but keep hoping the job will get done. During this time, Danielle/Justin claimed they worked every day. This statement is untrue. A few times, I had someone (who lived nearby) go to my house ~10:30 pm/11:30 pm to check. On those nights, no one was there working. Danielle and Justin claimed to be working long hours, even 24 hours a day while sleeping in their van. What professional company does that? But there was no significant progress made to reflect the hours they claimed they were working. On the way to my home on Saturday, 10/15, I received a text from Danielle saying although it was coming down to the wire, they were going to finish that day. When I walked in 25 minutes later, Danielle was surprised to see me. She made the comment that I came too early. It’s my house; I can show up whenever I want. However, when I checked on their progress, Justin had just started staining the first bedroom and was only less than 25% done – no other room in the house was stained! It was clear Danielle had been untruthful in her text and was expecting me to show up later in the evening. I told Danielle their delay was costing me added expenses in extended rent for corporate housing and storage fees. I asked (again) when they would be done; they said tomorrow (Sunday 10/16). Danielle said they would be completely finished early afternoon. On Sunday, Danielle called me at 4 pm to say they weren’t done. She (again) promised the job would be 100% complete late that night – they were already three days late and counting. That’s the last time I spoke to Danielle until Wednesday, 10/19. I text at 11:27 pm on Sunday night (10/16) asking if they were done. I never received a response. On Monday morning (10/17), I text Danielle asking for a status update; she never responded. I decided to go to the house. When I arrived, the entire main level and stairs had not been stained, some rooms still needed a final sanding, and the 3 bedrooms that were stained were a mess! My house was a mess! There was dust everywhere, equipment all over the place, etc. I sent a text asking what was going on, again, no response. I then said since their delay was costing me money, I planned to deduct $500 from their remaining balance for every day they weren’t done. However, I never got the chance b/c they never showed up or responded to my text. Danielle and Justin did not show up/call/text for two days: Monday, 10/17 and Tuesday, 10/18. If you are a no show/no call to work for 2 days, you don’t have a job to go back to when and if you decide to show up. I had no option but to come up with a plan B to mitigate the damage and extra expenses I was incurring. I received two quotes from hardwood companies via recommendations. One company said my floors were a mess and had no desire to take over/fix such a horrible job. The second company, who also provided a quote, felt the same way but (thankfully) took the job. On Wednesday, 10/19, I sent Danielle an email terminating their services effective immediately.
