I wasn't that happy with what he did. We just had him look at a swamp cooler and I figured he would complete what I thought he was going to do. He didn't diagnose anything. We thought that he would clean the pan and get it ready for the summer; he didn't. It wasn't what I thought.

The second thing he did was he and his coworker put in a window air conditioner. They did an okay job on that. I called him back because I didn't feel it was really cooling the room and he said he knew how to install them but said he didn't know how they worked. He probably is good in many other things. We just got the wrong person for the tech job. For other types of jobs I think he's probably fine but not so much for this particular one. The air conditioner is in and looks okay but as for the first job I was disappointed because I didn't think he did enough.

"I am responding to the review that Mrs. [Member Name Removed] sent in July 20, 2014.. I don't recall talking to her on the phone (but it's not important). I would like to point out I dealt with Mr. [Member Name Removed] for everything I was to do. He wanted new straw pads installed which I did. Nothing else was mentioned. I told him the new pads were installed, but the entire cooler looked like it hadn't been used for a long period of time. In fact the old straw pads fell apart each time I changed one. I asked him when was the last time it was used and he didn't know. Unfortunately, had [Member Name Removed] said something about it then I would have come back and cleaned it and install a new water pump. I never got the opportunity to do that. Now for the Air Conditioning unit, [Member Name Removed] asked me if I could install it. My reply was yes. However, the A/D in the corner of that room would require removal of the shelf over the patio door. He understood. [Member Name Removed] did the research and chose the smaller unit. The interior wall was closed up nicely and exterior wall was closed up to match the existing wood/framing patter. When finished, [Member Name Removed] said he was satisfied. I know how to install units in the wall. I don't have to know how they work. You have to know that a smaller unit will not cool that room the same as the larger unit. Additionally, the large unit was used because the exterior back of the unit was under and blocked by the eave. How can you expect a smaller unit to overcome the same intake blockage of air to cool that room. Like I previously mentioned, [Member Name Removed] did the research to choose the smaller unit. Neither he nor I thought about it. My helper and I have never seen an air conditioner unit installed in this matter."

He bid on the job and indicated he would bring a helper to complete the job in one day and return the next day to move back the washer and dryer after the tile and grout had set. He arrived on time but without a helper. My husband helped him move the washer and dryer from the area. At the end of 1 8-hour day, the laying of all the tiles was not complete. He returned the second day to finish the laying and apply the grout. He asked my husband to help him move the washer and dryer back in place at the end of the second day.
There were problems with the grout which we thought were due to moving the washer and dryer back into the room while the grout was still wet. This was a white grout and it picked up all the dust and debris from the carpet that was used to move the appliances. The top most layer of grout was also gouged and uneven. We were trying to figure out why the grout had discolored so much and discovered areas that had not been grouted at all like under the door frame or next to the threshold. We called the 'handyman' and he said he would stop by but not until 4 days later. We felt that the redo should be done asap to ensure any new grout added would have the best chance of adhering to the areas that needed to be filled in. In addition, since this was a white grout, we wanted to have the job done so we could seal it in a timely manner before dust and debris could settle in the grout lines. Consequently,we cleaned and re-grouted the area ourselves. This included removing the hand prints and excess grout splattered on the walls and doors especially in the closet (were we not expected to look in there?).
The biggest disappointment, however, was finding grout mixture dumped on our plants and around our tree in in the parking area. There were large chunks of grout on the ground and green plants with white streaks all along the leaves. This is not acceptable. We left a message to the handyman about this but told him we did not expect a call back as there is no excuse for this. Besides the idea that our Ca. native plant area was viewed as a 'dump', this practice is an affront to the environment. I will accept the fact that he did not leave the laundry area 'clean' and we cleaned hand prints and grout from the walls and doors but there is no defensible reason for littering on a job site and leaving a customer with litter long after the work is done and the check is cashed.
I have pictures but not sure how to upload them to this form...I can send them via email if provided with an email address.
I am very uncomfortable with writing a negative review (are my standards too high, did I get what I paid for?). However, this handyman should be aware that his practice of dumping materials is an affront to the customer and more importantly, the environment.

"I am responding to a review by [member name removed] posted July 7, 2014. Written by [member name removed] which doesn’t agree with the facts ( I never spoke to [member name removed] except to say hello). Her husband is who I dealt with the entire job. The costs seemed to be most important to her husband because he mentioned it a couple of times when I started the job. He later asked me about using the 10% off coupon (something Angies List makes everyone agree to). The helper subject didn’t come up until the end of the day and I informed him of the $20 charge. (I got the impression he didn’t want to pay. That’s why my helper was not there the second day. I intended to get him after completing the 2nd day and before the carpet issue was brought up. ) However, he did help taking the washer and dryer out. I suggested using the plastic tarp I carry for this. He decided he would rather use the carpet so the washer and dryer would not scratch or get damaged. I agreed to do it his way. Before moving the appliances back, the tile was washed cleaned with a damp sponge and also the entire floor was rubbed down with a clean terry cloth towel. The grouting was not gouged or uneven. When excess grout is wiped away with a sponge, the excess is removed and leaves a convex depression between the tile. This dust and debris (which I never saw after the appliances were moved) was claimed to be the cause. The discloring of the grout showed up in one spot – I removed it and re-did it with a new patch of grout which was a white grout. It might have been defective. The owner furnished all the tile and grout. I was not involved in the buying of the material. I did say I couldn’t get there for a few days. I would have removed the grout where necessary but that was not acceptable. The hand prints and excess grout was removed with a sponge and terry cloth towel. I never saw any of this in the closet or laundry room. I did not dump large chunks or grout, I scraped all of the grout out of the bucket into a bag which I hauled way (in fact her husband saw me doing it) I washed and cleaned the inside of the bucket with a wet rag and dried it with a towel. I partially filled it with water (which had a very small white residue which I spilled out far away from plants and added water to thin it out more. I admit it was a mistake on my part and will never do again."

Handyman Bill came to my home to measure for mirrored closet doors for my 3 upstairs bedrooms. Later he went to Home Depot to find out the price of the doors. Once he had the information he then called to advise me the cost. He also said one of the doors was a custom size and the Home Depot vendor had a 2 week turn around for custom orders. Since I wanted the doors quickly I called Tampa Glass who could matched Home Depot price but with a quick turn around with installation in less than a week.
Although I did not use Handyman Bill this time, I have used him for other small jobs without any complaint. He does a great job at a great price.
Use him without hesitation.
He advertised on Angie's List. I was surprised that he did drywall because I think he could've done a better job doing the finishing work.

Bill arrived on time for the estimate. He explained what he could salvage from the current garage door and provided a detailed estimate. Bill called me on the Sunday, the day before work was scheduled to start. He arrived on time and started work immediately with this helper.

The end result exceeded my expectations. The wall is very solid now and they added a mortar to create the down flow for water. They worked the entire repair around the doggie door that I purchased.

I had a rough opening for a window in the wall. Bill created a nice trim on the outside and on the inside he did a shadow bow and his helper fixed all the dry wall around the window in addition to replacing the drywall for the bottom 2 feet of the wall. While they were at, they patched the other drywall issues in the garage.

The work they did WAY exceeded my expectations.

Bill did a wonderful job repairing my patio beam and post. Part of the job was replacing the wood and part was a patch job. He did a great job on a timely basis, then primed and painted... good as new. He was very reasonably price and extremely personable. Very professional...I will use him again.

A job that was quoted at 4 hrs. @ $42.00 per hr. came out to 5.5 hrs. and the work was sub par. After voicing a concern at 4/12 hrs, about going over the quote he said "it's not like I'm padding the job" which threw me as I was not implying that at all. I was just was wondering what was taking so long. After saying he was done I inspected the job and noticed multiple boards that had been used to construct the shelf were split at the ends where they were attached to the framing ( a simple pilot hole drilled would've prevented this) and rather that have him re-do this small job I decided to pay him and be done with it. I went to Lowes and purchased some contact paper to hide the poor work. Never again.
Response from HANDYMAN BILL
"My response to [member name removed] complaint. He wanted to rebuild the floor under the sink which was seriously damaged by water. After looking at the damage, I estimated the job to take 4 hrs, possibly a little more or less time at $42/hr, plus about $45-50 for material. He immediately asked if I would use his lumber which later I found out was in the garage when he bought the house. After I saw the lumber I realized he was concerned about cost of labor and material. The sink was in an island type cabinet with all the connections coming up thru the slab floor (electric, water & drain) into the back of the cabinet. The toe kick space required the 2x4's to be cut down so the floor boards would fit properly. That is when I discovered how dry and hard the wood was for cutting. However, I was able to cut them to size and build a support around the pipes under the cabinet. After cutting the floor boards to the correct width, I discovered the floor was not level but I managed to correct that quickly. The big problem was the first floor board had to clear around the pipes. It was impossible to measure. I had to use the touch and feel method to cut away wood so that the opening around the pipes would be minimal. At this time he said this is taking a lot of time. I pointed out to him that this couldn't be helped. I was going as fast as I could and was marking where to blindly. - "and I was not trying to milk the job". (It was not said by me in a nasty way but now I think he did) His reply was he understood. I trimmed the floors to fit & be leveled. I drilled pilot holes for the screws (which in his review said I I should), it's always necessary. Sometimes you can't start a screw because it can't be reached easily due to the tight working space. That;s when I discovered some of the wood he furnished was slightly warped. When screwed into the floor supports, a couple of screws split the wood very slightly in 2 places (of course he didn't call me, I would have come back and repair those 2 places.) When I was paid and left, I got the feeling he was bothered by the cost. I inherited 1 problem. I was able to handle the piping and cutting of the critical floor board around the old lumber, however I didn't discover it until starting to reassemble the floor. I would also like to point out that I did the same exact repair on August 23, 2013. It had the same toe kick problems (2 X 6's that had to be trimmed and floor boards screwed into the 2 X6's and the floor boards trimmed.) This customer also furnished all the materials, however, this customer bought all "new" lumber."

He did a good job, and worked with the tenants, and he went and got the parts, and then sent me a bill by email after he had finished the work. That was really nice, because I had never met him. I would definitely use him again. I asked him for some more work, which he wasn't able to do. He did what I had asked him to do. The tenants were happy with him.

Great! Bill arrived 15 minutes early, worked for 10 hours straight, and cleaned up after he was done.
He even gave a discount because we helped him with hanging the cabinets, but all we did was
hold them on the wall for him while he put in the screws.
Bill has helped us before and we will continue to call him for help in the future. He arrives on time, cleans up and can solve any problem. On this visit Bill solved the problem of two stuck doors, a sparking light switch and replaced a ceiling fixture.
We used the special coupon, $79 for 2 hours of service, figuring it would take far less than that to do this quick fix. But what was great about Bill was he not only agreed to do the basest of repairs (grading the bottom of the gate), but he recommended some fixes that would keep the gate strong with years of use. He suggested adding an extra hinge and boosting the area where it closes, so it's stronger. He even suggested putting up an extra piece of 2x4 wood to strengthen it. I know it sounds like he was trying to upsell me, but it wasn't like that. He diagnosed the problem and offered ideas to make it even better. He didn't push at all. He came back the next day with all the supplies he needed and only charged me the cost of the supplies he purchased, in addition to honoring the coupon. He even used some of his varnish to match the wood. The gate continues to work great--no more stress on the fence and it opens smoothly every time.
