We received a call for a review request from Angie's List on 6/23 and had to cut the call short. We think this abbreviated call may have left some questions unanswered and therefore reduced the overall score Hardscapes received - which wouldn't be fair at all! We have not regretted working w/ them one time and highly recommend the work and wanted to add an additional review to share that (because we find other reviews on Angie's List so helpful when we're making a service professional choice/decision!).

It's been good. I use them about twice a month. We have an agreement and they come every other Monday. It's like $100 a month.

Quick estimate and fast work. Was very professional from start to finish. High quality work at an affordable price. Highly recommend Philip. This was a mess I dealt with for years and had contacted numerous folks for help. People don't show up, get overwhelmed and don't call back with an estimate or try to rip off a single female. Philip was amazing and I'm so thankful to have found him. Update: Most of the work was done as per the contract minus a few little things that I questioned but decided to let go....such as the top of the retaining wall having a thick layer of dirt so plant things....and it was mulched instead. The mulch was thin and a few inches of digging you run into the concrete blocks and aren't able to plant much at all. I've had about half of the plants die that we tried to plant. I began having issues with the work soon thereafter it was completed. Water was still a major issue and his solutions did not work. I contacted him several times asking for repairs to be made on pipes that are coming out of the ground that were supposed to be buried. He has made two unannounced trips to my house which has a locked privacy fence so he couldn't properly evaluate or fix anything. He tried to get the Metro Parks to fix some issues he found which I had previous stated the Parks were not willing to fix and knew about. I thanked him for visiting but asked for help from HIM on his part. He stated that he was still thinking about how to fix the problem. It's been over a year and nothing has been fixed. He has never scheduled a time to come look at the yard or do work. I continue to have a messy muddy backyard. He has a two year warranty on his work but it's not being held up. He made a few emails and phone calls to apologize. I asked him to please give me some money back if he didn't know how to fix this like he thought he could and he has not replied. I think over a year is unreasonable and I have been more than patient. Some of the work is still fine, the gutters and drain spouts are good. The retaining wall itself is well made. The beginning to the end of the project was fine. It's just getting him to do the work on the 2 year warranty for things that aren't working or are coming apart. I believe he may have more than he can handle or perhaps doesn't know how to fix it but isn't willing to give any money back to find someone to fix it.

Phillip and his crew were the utmost in professionalism. We had gotten a rough estimate of what would be entailed along with a time estimate in June. Because he was tied up with other projects, he explained that he would not start until the middle to end of July. We really appreciated the fact that he did not start the job and keep it lingering as we have heard some other contractors do.

When the crew showed up in mid July, they got right to work and each day they were there, we could see progress made. Philip is a bit of a perfectionist and that is so great because he is also an artist and wants the work to be great and to last a long time.

The crew was neat and cleaned up the job site as the work was progressing. Because we had a few periods of rain, we had a bit of a delay in getting the gator grout laid on the paths, but he communicated when we could expect he and his team by phone and/or email so that we could plan accordingly.

When the work was done, we were so pleased to come home to find that our driveway and deck had been pressure washed! (That was a bonus for my husband who was able to seal them both over the weekend.)

The work is top notch. I no longer have a mud pit on the side of the house for our dogs to dig in and drag to our tile; the 3 dogs actually love having a new "ramp" for running and chasing in the rest of the yard.

The larger path is level with our deck and has actually expanded our area for entertaining and relaxing outdoors.

They will be back in a week or two to lay the final sealant and we expect that we will be able to enjoy this in our backyard for a long time. We highly recommend Phillip and his team. We have shared this with our neighbors, who have said how beautiful the work is.

I chose Hardscapes by the Yard after obtaining quotes from only one other company. That violates my resolution to compare at least three quotes from separate providers but Philip Byard made such a positive first impression that I felt comfortable moving ahead with the project right then. He freely offered advice and made practical suggestions while the first company had offered suggestions in the form of a computerized diagram of the area for $100 (applicable to the finished job). Hardscape's estimate was considerably more economical as well. Once the job was started Philip and his crew consistently showed up when expected and kept me informed of the progress and any problems, including some drainage issues. They also filled in the bed with soil, topped with mulch and pruned a damaged crape myrtle. They were extremely professional and a pleasure to work with. I would definitely hire them again.
We are extremely pleased with the work that Philip and his team did for us. This was a fairly big budget project for us. It is always hard to know what you're getting into with a contractor or landscaper that you haven't worked with before. I'm glad to report that this project went smoothly and was done well.
The initial phase of the project was the approval from the Homeowner's Association. Philip was great to work with during this phase. Our home was new construction, so it was somewhat of a blank slate to begin with. We had to think through several aspects of the total scope and determine what on our "wish list" would fit into our budget. He made a few trips to our site discussing different options and pricing those out for us. He had great suggestions and definitely helped us hone in on the best design ideas.
The great experience continued during the project itself. He and his team showed up on time, worked hard, and were careful to leave the site in the best possible condition at the end of each day. Like any project, there were a few things that popped up unexpectedly as the work progressed. They went the extra mile to take care of all the small details.
We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. It looks great and we think that it will really help with the erosion issues. I would highly recommend their team for similar work and wouldn't hesitate to have more work done if needed.
The job was looks great and was completed on time and on budget. No negative surprises at all, but a certainly a few positive ones. They took care of a couple of things that we hadn't thought about on the front end. We could not have asked for more.
I think it is worth sharing a comment on the financial arrangement as well. I think they do it in a fair and professional way. Our project took a few weeks. He asked us for a deposit up front and a weekly draw. I think this is a reasonable process for a small business who is doing custom work. We kept the running totals and squared that up a couple of times along the way. In the end, the total was exactly what we had agreed to up front.
If you have work to be done, I'd definitely recommend that you consider Hardscapes by the Yard.
Hardscapes by the yard, referred by a friend, performed the services superbly. First, the owner, Mr Philip Byard, provided a thoughtful and insightful consultation about ways to improve the look of our backyard. He suggested a price-friendly way to replace the unsightly concrete cinder blocks that formed the wall with landscaping bricks, regional plants that conformed to the climate and sunlight of our backyard, and a new way of placing paving stones for paths. Finally, he provided a sketch of how earth could be "sculpted" to make the contours and topology of the backyard more attractive. Overall, I was very impressed with the care and creativity that Mr Byard put into our job. Then, with this plan and a reasonable price, he initiated the work a week later. It was completed within 5 days and involved the labor of 2-3 men. We were not at home most of the time, but overall, their presence was unobtrusive and they were unfailingly polite. As specified, they replaced the retaining wall, laid down new paving stones to improve the access to the backyard, and put in ~ 20 new plants. The yard has yet to "grow in" since it is autumn, but I anticipate it will look fabulous. Overall, we were very pleased with the work of Hardscapes by the Yard, and anticipate using them for routine yard maintenance in the future. In fact, they are removing leaves from our front yard now as I write this, and charge a very reasonable fee for this service. We like Mr Byard very much -- he is a polite and friendly gentleman -- and appreciate the care he has brought to our home. I recommend his business highly.
