It did not take long to schedule the work. I think it was only about a week. The cost was just the $199 Big Deal. They were very professional. The owner actually showed up to survey it before sending someone. They were very straightforward with me about what it included and what they would do. Actually, his brother came and did the work. They were very professional and polite the whole time. I would use them again in the future.

They did a good job the first time, and then I was very pleased with what they did the second time. I I gave them two deposits totaling $14000, and they never came back and did anything. I never got the money back. I called the AG, District attorney, and they said they couldn't do anything. He did the same to a bunch of other people too.

We closed on 31Oct13 and the renovation clock started. According to agreement with bank, work was to start within 30 days and complete within 6 months. In mid-Nov we were informed that we needed architectural drawings, were provided a name of someone they use, and were told that the drawings were not part of their bid. Also during this time it became evident that the old walls were not thick enough for standard insulation, etc. Demolition started on 02Dec13. Don told us there dump truck was broken down and asked if I could temporarily cover the cost of a dumpster to keep the project progressing. He explained that their salesman had been selling jobs out from under them and they had a serious capital issue. Having an A rating on Angie's List and being as foolishly trusting as I am, I agreed to cover the dumpster - first one load, then two, then three. By 06Dec13 they had demolished over 50% of everything in our two story duplex. The drawings took about three weeks, so by then it was end of Dec. In Jan they tried to pull the permit but changes were needed to the drawings. We spent the month of Jan going back and forth between Hardy Boys, the architect, and the county. During the month of Jan, no work was done. On 30Jan14, Don sent the building permit to me and the bank, and the first bank draw was submitted for the work done previously. Then the bank noticed that Hardy Boys' contractor licenses had expired, so it took until mid-Feb to get their licenses renewed and submitted.
On 21Feb14 new hope was given. Don's brother, Jeff, was assigned to the job as project manager. We reviewed the drawings and job with him. Work began again but it was only Jeff and occasionally a second guy. For a couple of weeks they worked to demo the remainder of the duplex, leaving only the brick shell, rafters/roof, 2nd floor, and cement slab first floor. I believe that Jeff was the first person to honestly look at the requirements and put costs to them. I had assumed that the budget was under control until we started talking about the details. Then Jeff started sharing his concern that the job was severely underbid. But at this point the place was fully demo'ed; there was no turning back. He said that he had no money to hire a crew and would be doing much of the work himself to keep it in budget. In early Mar we needed some changes to the drawing. When Jeff took the updated drawing to the county for approval, they wanted an engineer's stamp. Again from our pocket, we paid to have an engineer review the drawings. He added LVL's where we wanted open concept, which are pricey. Again, no turning back. Jeff got the stairs built (missing boards, nail heads sticking up, gouges of wood missing in places), dug up the slab for plumbing, laid sewer in the slab, and put in a new water line out to the street. Draw 2 was in early May; work ceased for three weeks. Jeff ordered windows in late May and installed them in the old jambs, planning to add extensions rather than just replacing them. Jeff installed the doors, put the subfloors down, and studded the walls. We were talking flooring, bathroom details, working with HD/Lowes on cabinet designs. Jeff told us he could wrap it all up in six weeks time. On 23Jun14, Draw 3 was sent to the bank. Once Hardy Boys had the check, two weeks went by without a word. Then Jeff called me to tell me that they would not be able to complete the job - the budget was too small. At the advisement of the bank, we fired Hardy Boys. The draws were set up so that they had only been paid for work that had been done.
Over the months they had agreed to store hardwood flooring and a vanity we had purchased. The bank had a 10% reserve that they said was due to Hardy Boys, so we exchanged it for our flooring and vanity on 05Sep14. We tried to reclaim our money for the dumpsters; however, if we wanted our materials, they needed the money. Don said he had not been able to pay Jeff for any of the work that he had done and that they had a generator and tools stolen one night at the property. Very unfortunate, but honestly not my problem. We complied because the money was far less than the materials we were having returned.
At first glance, we lost no money - we would have paid for the drawings on the dumpsters in the loan if we had not paid for them upfront. However, it has been a year now, our property is only 30% complete, we have been paying a double mortgage for our current home and the new home, and we have lost six months of rental income if the duplex had been completed. All totaled, we have lost over $15,000 and counting. We cannot find a contractor who can do the work for the money, and the bank says there is no more equity in the property to increase the mortgage. This is the position that Hardy Boys put us in by significantly underbidding the project in the beginning.
We are very pleased with the work that Don and his team did on our home. They installed a new roof. We live in a 1,300 square foot historic row home (1860’s) in West Chester borough. I got six estimates. Most were within a range of about $10,000 - $11,500, Don’s included. I know it sounds high for a house that small, but we had to have them take off cedar shingle covered tin roof and our property is very difficult to access. There is big tree out front and we don’t own the parking spots out back of our home, which are five feet or so higher than the yard (retaining wall), so there is no way to get a dumpster up to the house. The only way to get materials in or out is to carry them by hand or wheelbarrow. Going out the back, you also have to go up steps. Almost every contractor, except Don, expressed hesitation. One gave me an estimate of over $17,000. It was clear to me that the job was a difficult one and not one that many of the contractors wanted to do. Don also acknowledged that it was a challenge, but was enthusiastic about the possibility of having us as clients. Jeff and Ernie did almost all the work. They were friendly, focused, knowledgeable and hard working. If there was a question, Jeff could not answer, we took it to Don who was quick to respond. Our roof was leaking terribly by the time I started to call for quotes. It was very rainy that month and it was clear that all the contractors with whom I spoke were busy. Don did his very best to start the job asap. He even sent his guys out to tarp my roof until they could get to the job which prevented further leakage into my attic and damage to my ceilings. We now have the best looking roof on the block… by far. I’m a very “type A” personality who does her homework and has high expectations. Both my husband and I were extremely pleased with the work Don and his team completed for us. It will be a VERY long time before this house needs another roof. Thank you, Hardy Boys! (Sorry it took me so long to post my review!)

Excellent .....Donald Hardy made sure everything was done exactly the way I requested and the end result was beautiful and was much better than I had even visualized it would be? Hardy Boys Construction did a first-class job and Donald Hardy and his men were courteous and very professional . I would definitely hire them again.
I hesitated providing a review for this service, as I wanted to view the effort in as positive light as possible and also wanted see the results of the work over a few months. The man that performed the service was extremely nice; although, he took much longer than we expected to do with what we considered to be disappointing results. The caulk is now separated, cracked, and mildewed. We will now have to hire someone else to do the work that we originally requested.
The quality of the work was fine, it just took them a very long time to complete it (we did have a wet spring). I was dissapointed that I had to take 2 days off of work when I could have taken 1 off as they were unclear that the first day they came out they were simply going to gather a list (for themselves, the cost of materials was already included in the initial quote) for the materials that they needed. The work was completed 58 days after I had contracted with them. I might use them again for interior work, but I would hesitate to use for exterior work. I'm hesitant to use a company that would not sign a 60 day completion contract which I feel is a reasonable time frame (it was 1 days worth of work). *The phone number for the Hardy Boys is wrong in the yellow pages online by the way.

I just told you! by the way, they put up a sign on my fron t yard...big no no, if i am addvertising, i want a discount and a h*** of a lot better service, would not recommend this company to my worst enemy!

Response from Hardy Boys Construction
"[member name removed], I hope no one attempts to come and finish the work at your home. You have cursed my men, cursed on my phone and ranted about ridiculous things that you have no idea what you're talking about. The only reason we returned to finish the job is because your wife was a nice lady. We were warned you were a drunk. I wish we listened and never took the job. In the future please be advised hat spell check is a powerful tool. Next time you start posting to Angies List please dont give straight F's while you have my guys there actually installing your floors."

Hardy Boys Construction did a top-notch job for us. Don, the owner, came out personally to see what we wanted done and offer his ideas. Next, the same day, Bill, the business manager got a contract to us with the estimate. Bill answered all my questions and corrected any errors in the contract in a timely manner. Jeff Hardy came out to care of the Package Deals, repairing the roof leak too. The new driveway looks great, and the piping under the end of the drive, to channel rainwater, seems to be working. One thing I like about this company is I know everybody's name. All were quick to get back to me when I called with a question or concern. There is great attention to detail, and making sure the job is done right. I am hopeful the drainage pipe will work well, and I have a couple other jobs lined up for them, so I will update this posting in the future.

It is a year later and our driveway is cracking and crumbling. We had a company who specializes in asphalt driveways inspect ours and were told there is less than 1 inch of asphalt in a lot of areas. This is reason for the cracks, potholes and wrinkling in our new driveway. When we hired Hardy Boys, they had an A in Angie's List and BBB. I tried to call them to fix this and find out they are down graded in both and out of business. Now I have to spend another $6800.00 to fix their mistake. I am very disappointed that I did not get a heads up from Angie's List.

The company was very responsive and contacted me shortly after I bought the "big deal". However, my experience with scheduling the actual work was less than impressive. The initial evaluator called me at about 11 a.m. on a Sunday to tell me that he just received the work schedule and apologized about being late for the 10 a.m. appointment. Fortunately, the appointment was actually for Monday. He showed up on time on Monday, but spent only about 10 min. doing a cursory look at my roof from the ground and then spent another 40 min. talking about unrelated stuff. He left the scheduling of the actual work to someone else. I received a proposed date for the work on my home answering machine. The message was a little hard to hear and the caller didn't leave a direct phone number to call. I called the office number and had to leave a message on their machine to say that the proposed date wasn't good and suggested an alternative date. In response, I received a message similar to the first (hard to hear and no phone number) that basically ignored the date I proposed but offered another unacceptable date. It took about four of these cycles before finally settling on a date that actually worked.
I trust that the work was done well, although I wasn't on the roof to check it. In the end, I don't think I got much of a bargain for the work that was actually done and while everyone I dealt with was friendly, the business dealings didn't seem very professional.
After I purchased the property, I discovered that the master bathroom floor was rotted and leaking through the cieling. Hardy Boys were tasked with completely ripping out everything, and rebuilding a more modern and effecient bathroom, including a custom walk in shower.
Though originally the project was scheduled several months out, they were able to fit me in way ahead of schedule. From start to finish, their crew was effecient, friendly, knowledgeable, and an overall pleasure to have in my home. They cleaned up each day, went out of their way to ensure the work impacted my day to day routine as little as possible, and worked with me every step of the way ensuring we remained on the same page.
The only real problem that came about, was when a plumbing valve was discovered to have been damaged at some point in the construction. Their plumer went well above and beyond in attempting to repair, and assisting in aquiring and replacing the damaged part as quick as possible.
Overall, between the quality of the work, and their expertise in placement and layout, my outdated bathroom was transformed from a leaky throw-back to the 70's, into a beautiful and relaxing environment that I am sure will be enjoyed for many years to come.

It was reasonable, he was very efficient and very professional. I'd say try them up, I can't say anything more about that cause I haven't had them do the work yet. The guy who came out got sick and could not respond but the company should have responded regardless. Punctuality with exception to that was good, they arrived on time and processed things quickly.

We originally had Don at the house in February to give us an estimate on finishing our basement. I was impressed with him at that time and found that he was responsive, immediatly available and flexible for purposes of scheudling the estimate. We wound up using another contractor who gave us an unbeatable price, but Don's estimate was very reasonable and mid-range of all of those we received. Hardy Boys was our second choice but we went with the lower estimate. In June, we needed to have one of our bedrooms refinished quickly before the arrival of a new baby. I contacted Don based upon my prior good experience with him and though he was not scheduling work until July - we couldn't wait that long - he managed to free up one of his workers to squeeze us in and got the work done asap. They did a great job on the room and the costs were just as estimated.

There was a missing piece of siding on the corner of our house. I gave them a call and they showed up quick, and in a day or two they had come out and replaced the piece of siding. They even called to say they could not match the style/color exactly, and if I would prefer to have the same color in a different style, or the same style in a different color. I chose the same color/slightly different style. Really I didn't care as long as we had a piece of siding on there --- and it is 8 feet up so you can't even notice the different style.
I'd use Hardy Boys again --- Thanks guys!
I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!.
I purchased a coupon for $199.00 on 4/14/13 which was supposed to be worth $499.00 in services. These services were to include:
- The exterior caulking around of up to 10 windows and 4 exterior doors.
- The re-attachment of up to 5 pieces of vinyl siding.
- The re-attachment of up to 20 feet of rake or fascia metal and the re-nailing of gutter spikes for up to 40 feet of gutters.
- A roof and chimney inspection.
- A summary report will be provided to each homeowner and if needed a professional plan of action will be provided.
After the purchase I was contacted within several days to set up an appointment but I was not ready at that time so I contacted the Hardy Boys in early May and an appointment was made for someone to review the work.
The representative arrived on 5/24 at which time I told him that my main interest was in getting all of my windows caulked because the caulking was old and I had some noticeable moisture coming in two of them. He didn't have a ladder with him so the roof and chimney were not looked at. He said I would be contacted to arrange a time for when the repairman would be on site.
I was contacted and the repairman arrived as scheduled but without letting me know. When I realized that he was there and went out to speak to him and tell him about the two windows that were leaking he said that he had already done them. I could only see one of those two windows but I could clearly see that he had not applied caulk in the very corner of the window that was leaking. He corrected that and then went back to look at the other leaking window and had to add additional caulking in that one as well. When my son stopped by I asked him to look at the other windows (I am disabled and don't get around well), his impression was that most of my windows were not recently caulked!
So, my complaints are as follows: I didn't get my 10 windows or any doors caulked... I didn't get a roof or chimney inspection and... I didn't get a homeowner summary report!! I bought a discounted (?) coupon for $199.00 that was supposed to be worth $499.00 and received work that I could have had a local painter do for $75.00!
This coupon sold by Angie's List was a rip off!!

One of the internal walls was leaning and Hardy Boys Construction did not correct that, and the floor was a bit uneven. They just put tiles on what was there: they did not fix the wall or level the floor. I think the owner knows what he is doing, but I think the guy that he hired was not a professional.

I don?t know where to begin expressing our complete satisfaction with
Hardy Boys Construction. We normally request estimates from three (3)
companies before beginning any big project, but when we met Don Hardy my
husband and I both had a good feeling and knew that Don was the one we
wanted to do business with. We were impressed with his warm, friendly
yet professional manner.
When we came to an agreement, everything we discussed was put in a
contract for both my husband and Don to sign. We were concerned about
additional charges once the job started, since we knew in advance that
we had water damage. Don gave his word that all prices would be
discussed before doing the work. When we needed to have plywood
replaced, Don gave us a price for the additional materials. When the
job was completed the additional charges were actually less than he
originally quoted! How often does that happen?
From our very first appointment with Don he would call ahead to let us
know when he was 10 minutes away. He was never late, it was just a
courtesy call. His workers were always here first thing in the morning.
They were here in the cold, the wind and even if it was drizzling. There
were never any excuses. They worked in weather that I certainly
wouldn?t work in.
The Hardy Boys crew (Eric, Jason, Jeff, and Charles) were the best.
Eric was very reliable and knowledgeable leading the team as Project
Manager. They were polite, professional and went above and beyond to
make sure we were pleased with their work. At the end of each day,
Don would check with us to be sure everything was exactly as we expected.
It always was.
Don suggested stucco for the front of the house and Hardie Plank for the
sides and back. We had never considered changing the wood front to
stucco but thanks to Don we did. When our neighbors walk by they comment
on the completely new style of our home. It is truly lovely.
We will definitely call Hardy Boys Construction for any additional work that we
need to have done.
I cannot say enough about the wonderful experience we have had with Hardy Boys construction. We recently purchased a 100 year old house that was in need of considerable repairs. Don was wiling to come out while we were still finishing the short sale process to give us estimates on the repairs. He itemized everything so that we could figure out how to use our limited resources efficiently. Once we settled on the contract, his crew started work exactly as he had outlined. When we uncovered additional problems, he was quick to provide advice, estimates, and ultimately, high quality repairs. It was a huge relief to feel completely comfortable leaving his workers in our home working, without us supervising. They also took the time to explain different techniques for the repairs so that my husband and I could increase our home improvement skills repertoire through the process. Ultimately, they came in UNDER budget and on time. We are currently hoping that they will be able to help us with several other repairs. I would highly recommend Hardy Boys for high quality work, on time and under budget.
Hardy Boys Construction is an A#1 construction company. I had a leak in my ceiling after Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Don Hardy responded to my phone call immediately. Don was thorough and efficient. He didn't want to fix the damage with a quick fix; he wanted to search out the reason why the damage happened. He was professional, knowledgeable and proficient. He talked to the insurance company and handled the paperwork quickly. Hardy Boys Construction is an honest and skilled construction company and is an asset to our community.
