<p>We wanted to remodel our newly purchased condo but didn't think we'd be able to afford all the projects we had in mind because of the limitations of our budget. A couple of local contractors in Gulf Shores had estimated a minimum cost of $40,000. We contacted Help-Around-the-House based on favorable Angie's List reviews and found that they more than live up to their great reputation. Dan Parks and his team worked closely with us from start to finish, not only helping us to stay within our budget but also coming up with ideas that were better than what we originally had in mind. All of the work was of high quality, yet it was done amazing fast.  We couldn't be more satisfied with the final result.  We definitely recommend Dan Parks and the Help-Around-the-House team to anyone who wants high quality work done at a fair price.</p> <br />

"These folks were great to work with. We were able to advise on how to make their dreams into reality and knowing the products and materials we use as well as the best value-added type work, we strived to produce a finished workproduct of which they could be proud. All our worker's expressed very high regards for the quality of these fine folks. Their supportiveness was most appreciated. We are glad to have met them and welcome them as neighbors."

Fantastic. Mr Dan Parks is the best contractor I have ever hired. He is hands on and does the work himself with his trusted skilled workers. We had a basic 3 foot cube for a shower. He built a complete new 6 foot long double shower with a bench seat. All new floor to ceiling porcelain tile, with rain forest spray. New Granite counter top, back splash and shower bench seat. Beautiful job! Clean, quick, organized and far under bid competitors. Dan Parks is a great guy and a former major and minor league baseball player. He does it all and I won't use anyone else!

<p>I took advantage of a coupon offered by the contractor to have a new ceiling fan installed for $74.00 which was a good value, since price quotes I had received for the job from other contractors ranged from $100.00 to $200.00. </p> <p>I received a email from the owner, Sam Shorrosh, within hours of purchasing the coupon.  He was professional and articulate and scheduled a appointment within 48 hours; not for lack of work but because he was willing to come after hours on a weekend to complete the job as soon as possible if I was agreeable,</p> <p>Sam Shorrosh, called prior to the appointment to confirm and arrived on time.  He wore a shirt clearly identifying the name of his company, "Help Around The House", and was clean, neat, and professional.</p> <p>Before removing the existing fan Sam, after a quick inspection, ask if I would prefer the existing fan to be repaired if possible or just replaced with the new fan I already had on hand?  Since the fan was relatively new, just out of warranty, I opted for the repair.  Within thirty minutes he had made the necessary repairs to the fan saving me $180.00, the cost of the new fan.</p> <p>Since I purchased a coupon to have a fan installed I did not take note of the name of his business until he actually arrived, assuming he must be an electrician.  I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he and his contractors are much more than electricians, as the business name suggest "Help Around The House", they can complete most any job a homeowner would need to accomplish around the house.</p> <p>I have already ask Sam to give me quotes on a few odds and ends I need completed around the house and would certainly recommend him to family and friends.<br /> <br /></p> <br />

"Exceptional customer. Had thought out what he wanted in advance. He waited till I was done with the main project I came to do, and then we discussed other projects I could do for him. Emotionally mature and balance individual who understood what it means to work. He will no doubt become a friend."

It went well. Very hard workers - personable but professional. They were willing to work very closely with us to get the most bang for our buck. As its an old house that hadn't been kept up, a lot of serious problems were discovered when walls were torn out, floors ripped up, etc., so adding new electrical systems, plumbing/sewer systems, etc to make things safe and up-to-code, added time and unexpected expense. We weren't able to do all we'd have liked to do because our budget was limited. We will update the main bathroom, restore our patio and redo our old hardwood floors as our income allows, and we'd certainly go back to them for that work. Dan's the man!!! :-). He can do anything, it seems!!! <br />

"The [member name removed] are a real addition to our community and we were glad to work with them, their budget, and their plans to improve and update their new home. Patient and understanding concerning building code requirements. My team leader, Dan Parks, ran the show as we all got involved. Really great people whom we would always be pleased to serve in the future."

It was great and it went well. A guy from the company came in and did what I asked him to do. I used the big deal right away after purchasing it and I only spent for the price of the big deal. He was on time and everything went well.

"Member was gracious and kind, accurately describing the issue such that we needed no additional materials after actually seeing the problem. Our technician was in and out in a short amount of time. Would be a pleasure to work with this property owner in the future."

They showed up when they said they would and gave me an estimate.  I'm not happy because he had told me he would be done in one day and that was 2+ weeks ago.  I would use him again only because I can't get anyone else to show up.
Response from Help-Around-The-House
"We said it would take 24 hours. Freezing cold weather, rain and other projects already in process meant spreading the job out. I communicated the changing situations clearly throughout the project and he seemed fine. As he said, he couldn't even get anyone else to help him and yet we did everything he asked, and a little more, despite the weather delays. I worked sick one of the times, and had to leave. I don't normally do this type work personally as I have great people; but I had four people out sick. Don't understand people that are so rigid with everyone else's schedule but God forbid if it were the other way around. You can't please everyone. So, when he dangled a complete bathroom build for his attic and a half-dozen other jobs, we had learned our lesson and turned him down. Why? Because...well you know! I only have to get bitten once to learn from my mistakes and not every customer is the customer I am looking for. Moving forward."

Replaced two exterior doors and touch up work was not completed.  Patched water stains in ceiling in bath and painted the walls. That part was fine. Patched water stains in hall and painted and that part was fine.  Guest bathroom was to use joint compound to smooth ceiling and around walls and ceiling and paint. Three attempts to complete the work.  Remove wall paper in both baths and that went fine. Was told the work could be completed in two days with three men but that was not done. The next work day one man showed up to do a six hour task and after two and a half hours he left.  Work was to start on Nov. 20 and was not completed until Dec. 1st.
Response from Help-Around-The-House
"Thank you for the review. I am not sure what touch up work was referred to as I asked if there was anything else we could do before we cleaned up the last day. As for shortage of personnel, and delays, we experienced an usual number of family and weather emergencies. Not one, but two vehicles broke down and the project leader had to leave town to handle a family medical emergency. As for weather, a passing storm generated winds in excess of 90 mph that destroyed our cabinet-building shop, exposing our equipment , building materials and in-progress projects to the weather. We had to cancel all projects to protect and evacuate everything to an alternate site. We then had to address damage to our own homes. Point: We never gave up but kept going back until the project was completed. The customer and his wife were very patient with us during this time, as we dealt with genuine emergencies. I am grateful for the honest review and promise we will work hard to improve our emergency response procedures, so the customer doesn't feel what impacts us as a small business. Regards, Sam Shorrosh, Owner, Help Around The House"

<p>Sam and Dan have been an absolute godsend ! I contacted them because we discovered water damage in a closet and on the ceiling in a bedroom. We had received another estimate for the roof but Sam and Dan got down on their hands and knees and discovered water damage and wood rot not only in the front eaves but in the back eaves as well. Their attention to detail was impressive, both have backgrounds as insurance adjusters. They gave us fair, accurate and complete estimates. Yes, you can get a cheaper estimate but you won't get a more quality job completed . They use only the best materials and don't skip steps. Sam and Dan are perfectionist, and they are truly hands-on guys. These guys are top of the line! </p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <p>  <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /></p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <br />

"Member had a clear idea of what she wanted to accomplish. We were glad she had done so much homework before contracting us to start the work. This allowed us to reduce/eliminate in-progress change orders that would have added cost to the project. We are always appreciative when the homeowner takes the time to do their research and already has a solid idea of what they want. The member was gracious, provided great input, and was prepared for the time and disruptions, which we did our best to mitigate. Lovely couple that we were pleased to assist in making their home a showplace."

In our move to Foley the bases on two of my porcelain lamps were broken.  It was very difficult to find someone in this area who repaired lamps.  Mathes Lighting (which is one of the worst lighting stores I have ever seen-they are totally commercial-no wiring, don't sell shades, etc.) said that knew no one in the area.  Also called a decorator thinking they might have a name but to no avail. I persevered and finally found Sam and his company Help Around The House.  He was listed under handyman/restoration work but it did list lamp repair.  I called and he said he certainly did.  (I called Mathes and the decorator back and gave them Sam's number.  He has now had numerous calls about repairing lamps.)  At any rate he was working close by so I took the lamps to him along with the one with the broken socket.  It took him  a while to fix the bases because he had a hard time finding the decorative bases for the lamps that didn't have a huge price tag.  But, he too, persevered and found the perfect bases at an excellent price.  He delivered the lamps to my house and I am very pleased with them. <br /> He charges $25 a lamp plus materials.  I think that is very reasonable. <br /> He apparently can do any kind of renovation work, build cabinets, etc. but I only used him for lamps so that is all I can comment on. <br /> I would highly recommend him for fixing lamps-both the decorative part and rewiring. <br />

"This member was a pleasure to assist. Not only did she ask great, insightful questions, but clearly understood that rare and one-of-a-kind lamps take time and perseverance to restore and/or find original equipment parts. Our subsidiary business, Light Keepers: Lamp Repair, started out as a hobby, and as the member noted, grew into a second line of business. We repair and restore literally hundreds of lamps per year and our chandelier service is growing. A special bonus is that this business opens the opportunity to build relationships that lead to major projects. One more than just a few occasions, repairing a lamp or two has developed into building a large addition to a home, a complete structure remodel, gutting a fire damaged home and rebuilding it, building a three car garage, building a mother-in-law suite onto a house, remodeling 9 separate kitchens, building a dozen decks, adding an enclosed sunroom and patio, remodeling dozens of bathrooms, remodeling two churches, and building a new home on the river. Lamp repairs are an opportunity to interact with history as each one has a story to tell. As we develop relationships with our customers, they come to trust us with their dreams, which we turn into realities. Allow us to repair your keepsake, rare, one-of-a-kind, whimsical, antique, collectible lamp or chandelier. Our low fee plus parts arrangement can't be beat. 90% of our parts are bought from American companies. Keep in mind, we also enjoy converting oil jars and lamps into electric, and turning your object-d'-art into a custom lamp. We've turned bronzed boots, golf clubs, cannon shells, driftwood, sugar containers, even washtubs, into lamps for both indoors or outdoors. My business partner Dan, is a master craftsman/carpenter. Do you have a set of chairs that just say they belong in your home? Dan can build the perfect dining room table, cabinets, armoire, buffet or china cabinet to match. Need to refinish your cabinets to look like driftwood? We can refurbish or refinish even custom build whatever design that complies with the laws of physics and the space allowed. And, you should see what we can do with a poured-concrete deck. Our staining process can make the concrete look like almost anything, from cola stain to a leather look. But don't stop there, let us build you a deck with a custom Pergola cover that will be elegant, functional and distinctive, then have us landscape the yard to match. Our range of abilities is broad but your budget doesn't have to be. Give us a call."

Being new to the area I had no idea who to call for help.  Screws on my dryer had fussed to the metal and we had stripped them trying to remove them. I called Help-Around-The-House and was told the owner would call me right back which he did .  Sam the owner said he would come by within 30 minutes and take care of the problem.   While here they checked out my roof which had a small leak and said they would call and come by to fix it ASAP .  They did not want it to rain on it anymore and took care of it in a couple of days. <br /> i will definitely use Sam again,  I feel they are very honest and care about people's problems.  I have never had such fast response to any service call I have ever made. <br />

My wife and I are  landlords for a modest home which needed several repairs including replacing a backporch screen door. We originally had hired a neighborhood handyman and had even sent  money for him to purchase the initial supplies, only for him to become ill (truly) before he could do the work. Via Angie's List, we located Sam at Help-Around-the-House, a perfect name for handyman services if there ever was one, but I digress. Frankly, I was very leery using some one who isn't a referral from a friend or family, as I am out of state and thus can be more readily taken advantage of. But my tenants rightfully so could wait no longer for the repairs, so I hired Sam based on his "phone presence." We're so glad we did. He went out there that very day and gave us a quote, which we felt very reasonable. He then proceeded to do the work in a prompt and efficient matter, coming back to finish the job the first day after some inclement weather. Our tenants verified the quality of his work as well as confirmed his good character (always a bonus!)  Handymen tend to have the reputation of being "flakes." Not the case with Sam. We sensed this is some one you can rely on and trust. We definitely plan to use him again in the future. <br />

Granger Construction was referred by RJ's Seamless Gutters, who by the way I got from Angie's List.  By the way, I couldn't by more pleased with his gutters .  Back to Granger Construction ... He came to look over the work I wanted done so he could make an estimate.  I was very impressed by his professional appearance and presentation.  He returned in two days with a written, detailed bid.  I thought the bid was fair and accepted it.  I had planned to get another bid but didn't as I was impressed with Granger Const.  He did not disappoint me. Granger Construction is a licensed home builder and remodeler.  He was always prompt, courteous and went out of his way to make sure I was pleased.  I would recommend him to a friend or anyone needing remodeling done. <br />
