The job was to install new shower walls in place of old ones which were not sealed correctly and were coming away from the wall. Also to install glass doors for the shower. This is a single bathroom home. I both items had been previously purchased for this job. The guy that does the estimates and I guess is the "foreman" does not do any of the work. He sent one guy to the do the work. The foreman had said two days for the job. The employee said 4 days. They had been working on the job for 5 days before we determined it would be better if they did not return. . The employee that arrived openly stated this was the first time he had done a job like this. Even though the foreman said he had been working for the company for 7yrs or 11yrs. we couldn't get a straight answer on that. He was supposed to arrive by 8:30 am. He would show up anywhere from 9:30 to 10:15 am each morning. He would stay between 4 to 5:30 each night. Each day he was here he would take a break about every hour it seemed as well. We had called twice to complain over the course of the job about this employee but the company refused to send anyone to help him or to send any other individual. Also, the foreman admitted that they had complaints on the employee in the past. The employee did a lot to inconvenience us in our home and also did a lot of damage. First, he took over the entire carport without asking. He shuffled out door furniture around and left his stuff in the carport so no one could park or enjoy the outdoor seating area. Additionally he was messy. He did not make an effort to clean up after himself. We had to do all the clean up. Also, there was not a day he did not leave some of his tools behind. The employee had chipped a brick in the car port when he was setting up his saw horses. He used and damaged a wicker table used in the seating area outside. He walked through the house with an open marker and marked on the door coming into the house as well as on the door frame in the bathroom. He damaged the shower fixture so it is no longer able to change from shower to tub when running water. He chipped to the metal the porcelain tub a hole about the size of a dime. He got plaster on the shower fixtures. He cracked the window frame when he had to remove it to take down the preexisting shower wall. He did not clean before he put caulking around the tub when the shower wall was put up. He scratched the laminated flooring dragging stuff in and out of the bathroom. He also damaged a hallway rug to the point where it may not be able to be repaired. Also, the shower doors were hung incorrectly. When the various pieces of damage were shown to the "foreman" He stated he didn't believe that his employee had done the damage. He refused to make some things right such as fixing the tub that had been chipped or the brick in the carport. In the end the job was left unfinished by the company. They did not try to fix what their employee had done, and we are left with trying to complete the repairs ourselves and hire other professionals to fix what they had screwed up.

They were courteous and respectful of my mother who had just gotten out of the hospital. They made suggestions for grab bars. They always showed up on time and they were neat! Big deal when you have a sick person in the house! I'd hire them again.

"There are so many complaints about the job this company did that I can't even list them all. I paid 11 grand and when they were "done" I had to hire another company to come in and do it correctly.
Response from Highland Home Improvement
"Reading this review is the first time we heard this customer was unhappy. The review comes a few months after the work was completed and payment was received. She was contacted after job completion because she stated sheet rock dust was all over the house. We paid to have someone come in and dust the metal beams exposed in the vaulted ceiling, wiped all the walls down and cleaned the floors with the cleaner customer provided. At that time she did not tell us that she had any problems with the work we had done in her home. Our owner/ estimator spoke with her a couple of weeks after completion and she said she was happy with the work. She was the only person we worked with on her job. She left this review after her husband came back into the picture. He was not involved in the quote or work at all. We contacted her after reading her review and she told us there were three small cracks. We told her we guaranteed our work and that we would be happy to come in and repair the cracks. She would not discuss it with us and referred us to her husband. He is not willing to allow us to come back and fix the cracks. She did not contact us to come back and take care of these cracks before she left this review. At the time of job completion and full payment, she was satisfied with our work."

I couldn't have asked for a better experience with Highland Home Improvement. Neil was sent to do the work for me. He and his wife were great communicators, they worked with my crazy schedule and the quality of their work was top notch. I will definitely use them again!! They may be more expensive than others, however I felt it was worth it for my peace of mind. I couldn't be happier!
The project started on time and took as long as projected by the contractor. Everything went smoothly and we love the way our deck looks now with the roof extension. After the work was completed there was one small little item I wasn't 100% happy with. Robert personally came out and took care of it himself to my satisfaction. We would certainly use Highland Home Improvement in the future.
The contractors were polite, professional and considerate. My mother was very ill and they always wanted to know if their noise was disturbing her. When she napped, they worked on things like removing wallpaper and installing light fixtures. When she was up, they did demo. They were awesome! The job was done well and they made suggestions to improve the design. They ROCKED!
Wonderful Experience. This is a very professional competent company. They were prompt. Always on time and the work looks outstanding. I am so glad we went with them. I have had bad experiences with other companies over-promising but not delivering and/or not really having the skill to do the job. Robert Toline and his crew are very skilled and delivered as promised. I will use them everytime on my future projects.

Had a leak on the roof around one of the vent boots. Replaced the boot. Also, had a couple of extra wall plugs installed in the garage by the work bench and step from garage into house cut down so storage cabinet could be opened. Additionally had some repairs done to pantry shelves.

I had used this company before and even though the price was high I was pleased with the work and follow thru they did when the painter who was originally doing the job had a very bad accident and couldn't finish the job. A new person was sent out to finish the job and I was pleased. That is why I hired them again.

The work on the deck was done but much slower than it should have been. The stain ordered was the wrong color and it had to be ordered again and put over the area where the first stain was put. There was only one man on the job and he had to carry off all the furniture and when the job was done, had to put it back on all by himself. He was the man who had the bad accident years ago and I felt bad for him. But I couldn't help as I had knee surgery. Unfortunately, some of the furniture had to be dragged back on because of it being so heavy and that left dark marks on the deck. The owner came out several times to look at it and decided that it was mud and that I had to wash it off. So it was left that way and after buying TSP, I slowly did scrub off the dark marks, bad knee and all. I wasn't pleased with that as two people should have been on the job.

I would use them again only if the job that needed to be done had the right number of people assigned to do it.

The work increased the value of our house by more than $40,000.00. The work was excellent and all of the workers were very professional. I am more than pleased and recommend him without any reservation.
I wrote a previous review on this job which is posted on 6/28/2014. In that review I stated that the supplier did exactly what he said he would do but the results turned out less than desirable, as you could still see black stains thru the paint. I blamed that on my not being very specific in my functional specifications on what I wanted to see when the job was finished.

After seeing that review the owner of the company called me and wanted to come by and look at the completed job. After looking at the work he offered me a deal, that was more than fair, for him sending a person out to apply a sealer and another coat of paint. That work was completed today and looks excellent.

This speaks well for the company and it's owner as they were certainly not obligated to come back and re paint.

Proposal was developed after a review of the job in the field. Committed to do the work in a short period of time. This involved scaffolding to the second floor. Exterior of gutters were cleaned, shutters removed/repainted/remounted, porch re-grouted in the worst places and reattached missing bricks. Cleaned sidewalk. Repaired area in eave that the porr squirrels had chewed up when they got hungry. Surface prepped all areas to be painted, including metal vent housings. Replaced roof rubber seals around all sewer vents poking thru the roof of the 1st and 2nd floors. Did throrough cheanup after job completion. Re-worked leaking gutter on back of house over the deck.
This job was manned up adequately so work got completed within 3 weeks. In other words, the workers showed up and the the work done without dragging out the job or asking for change orders. Communications was great between us and the contractor thourhout the job process.
Really liked working with Robert Toling. No hidden ball tricks here. Just a good professional that does everything he writes down. He really does a great job communicating between everyone to be sure the job goes well.
The original contract was signed 4/21/14. Work began around 7/01/14. I had to call them to ask when they were starting the job.
Bathroom: I designed a large shower, 6 feet wide. The main ceramic tiles are 22" x 22" and resemble light granite. There is a vertical mural on the back wall of (3) 20" x 20" tiles that look like dark highly grained stone. A 4" border of multicolor dark/light mosiac surrounds the mural and ties the light stone to the dark mural. The original border created a major problem. The sample glass tile was on a brown background, but after installation, some tiles were blue and did not match the other tile. The border was removed, another border was chosen and installed. After some unexpected delays, the end result is exactly what I had envisioned and looks fabulous. It really has a Wow factor. The plumbing fixtures are brushed nickel with a shower head and hand shower. Mike, the installer is very good at his job and easy to work with. Mike also removed the popcorn ceiling from the bathroom. What a messy job that was! He did an excellent job on the completed ceiling. I chose two vanity lights for over the sinks that had slate backs that matched the mural shower tile. Two large mirrors were installed. Mike did an outstanding job.
Deck: Initially the deck (10' x 30') was to be power washed and stained. After power washing, (deck is 19 years old) an old sap problem surfaced again. Something else had to be done. Only staining the deck would not work. I did some research and found a beautiful deck tile of cumaru exotic hardwood from www.advantagelumber.com. The product is beautiful and much better quality than some of the composite decking. AND less expensive. Advantage Lumber was great to deal with. A pallet of cumaru deck tiles was ordered and shipped. Don and Toby were the men working on that project. The old deck boards were removed and additional joists were installed to accommodate the tile connectors. Don was called to another job and Toby finished the deck. Toby did an outstanding job of cutting and fitting the tiles around the posts. The steps and landing were done in solid Cumaru boards. After installation, Toby rolled on IPE oil. This brought out the true beauty of the wood. The end result is a remarkably beautiful deck surface.
I am extremely pleased with the workmanship and materials used. The total cost was about $24,000, with the bathroom work costing around $16,000 and the deck about $8,000. The total included $6,500 in materials I purchased outside the contract.
The workmen were respectful and easily adjusted to working with a woman. They asked my opinion at each step and took in stride the changes in plans.
I can't help but wonder if the overpriced service wound have been cheaper else where. The provider came and gave an estimate for the services. Basically, they are a middleman between the provider of the actual service and the consumer. Highland was very prompt and everyone came to my house at the stated time. The service provided was decent and quick; however, a few days later my husband noticed some issues. The hinges on the closet door were installed backwards; still work but awkward. The door is slightly too big to close easily. The service provider was very nice, on time, worked quickly, and cleaned up after himself.
Work was performed in a timely manner exactly as agreed. The driveway patch did not work the first time and they promptly returned to try another method for repairing cracks. It seems to be working. I would not hesitate to contract with Robert in the future. They are not cheap, but they are very good and they will do the job properly.
During a period of high use (there were many other homes with the same problem) the contractor was very responsive, going out of his way to accommodate the repairs. Repairs were needed to two walls and most of the ceiling in a three car garage. New pipes were installed, covered by sheet rock and painted. New insulation was added to the entire ceiling. Some upgrades were added without any problems.
