Chuck Hipp and his employee, Antonio, did a phenomenal job! The brick fireplace was sinking and the bricks were separating from the wall. After investigation Chuck determined that there were no footers under the fireplace. He installed new footers, supported the brick wall and reattached all the bricks and suggested the fireplace be covered with stucco and tiles to match the Spanish style of the house. The fireplace turned out beautifully and became the true focal point of the living room. The house was listed for sale and I know the beautiful stucco fireplace helped to sell the home quickly. We moved to our new 1948 house and discovered that the chimney needed to be rebuilt. I received a bid from A Step in Time chimney sweeps which was astronomical. I then consulted a structural engineer who confirmed the bid was outrageously high. He recommended a good brickmason be consulted. I found Chuck Hipp and Hipp Masonry Works on Angies List. Chuck investigated the problem and determined that the chimney needed to be torn down and rebuilt at the roof line and he was able utilize new bricks with old bricks to match the new chimney addition to the existing home and bottom half of the chimney. He asked me to drive around and take photos of chimneys I liked and he would duplicate it. I found a chimney on a beautiful older home and Chuck was able to duplicate it to suit my brick, Tudor home. It is gorgeous and best of all the fireplace can now be used for a beautiful wood fire. He then removed and replaced all the broken, damaged bricks throughout the exterior of the house using mainly old bricks salvaged room the chimney rebuild. Chuck and Antonio did incredible work and at half the price of the previous bid. Before they left they brought in topsoil to fill in any holes in our lawn due to the work and they used soil to regrade the back of the house which had been the cause of damage to lower bricks. They also repointed the front steps and remortered the boxes for the exterior porch lights which were hanging loose from the brick exterior. I will only call the HippMasonry Works for any brick work.

Chuck and his entire crew were very polite, professional, and respectful throughout the repair process and they displayed a top-notch work ethic. Almost a year has passed now since the repair work was completed on our home. We have been through one or two wicked nor'easters, and there has been zero leaking. Chuck and his team did a fantastic job. We would hire them again without hesitation. It is true that Chuck is not the easiest to reach on the phone, but if you want a situation with your house fixed correctly, once and for all, then the persistence is well worth it.

My wife and I have dealt with many contractors over the last 30 years and Mr. Hipp is, by far, the absolute best of the best. If you need any masonry worked performed, call Chuck Hipp or you are making a huge mistake! My wife and I are perfectionists and difficult to please and Mr. Hipp greatly exceeded our expectations. His work is nothing short of perfection, a rating of A++. We had issues with a brick veneer wall that arose from faulty construction. It was so badly damaged that Nationwide, our insurance company of 25 + years, refused to renew our homeowner’s insurance unless the wall was repaired with very short notice. My sister had masonry work performed by Mr. Hipp and we admired his superb craftsmanship. I contacted Mr. Hipp, explained our situation, and he came out late the same day on Saturday to assess the situation and provide us with his recommendation. We were very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism and we hired him. Due to the urgency of our situation, Mr. Hipp reprioritized his schedule and began work within a couple days, without a signed contract or any deposit! I contacted an engineer that works for Nationwide and shared with him Mr. Hipp’s proposal. The engineer informed me he was well aware of Mr. Hipp’s reputation and stated that whatever he did would greatly exceed the requirements of Nationwide. The new wall and surrounding area is absolute perfection. It blends in so well with the rest of the masonry work that you cannot tell a repair was performed. Mr. Hipp also repaired some sloppy masonry work performed by another local firm whom I won’t mention here which now looks exceptional, build us a beautiful new brick mailbox, and repaired our brick walkways and chimney. The flashing on our roof had to be repaired after the wall was built. I called a reputable roofing company who stated they were backed up 3-4 weeks. I informed Mr. Hipp and he called the same company and they repaired the roof the next day as a favor to him! Chuck Hipp is a man of integrity and the absolute best in his craft. He’s also a wonderful, caring person that you can trust explicitly. We have never met anyone quite like him.

I started by calling a couple of the foundation companies, but they tried to make me think my house was sinking to its ruin and wanted me to spend over $20,000 to make rock solid repairs! Fortunately I have common sense, and started calling brick masons instead. I found Hipp on Angie's List and called for an estimate. He came out, looked at the area where I had issues, and then walked around the house looking at other smaller problems. He suggested digging to the footer on the front corner, installing jacks, and trying to raise the foundation to its proper level. He also recommended re-pointing some of the other smaller areas and replacing my slooping front porch concrete. I opted for the foundation and all the brick work, leaving the porch for later. When they first attempted to lift the foundation, some cracks started to re-open around the windows on the inside, so I asked them to stop and just stabilize at that point. The replacement windows had been installed about 15 years ago and were aligned to the slope, and worked perfectly. They did an excellent job, and I am extremely pleased with the work!! Chuck even dabbed some paint on some bricks that had been damaged by a power washer, so that they would match the other bricks. He left me the paint so that I can later "dab" around bricks stained from the wash down of my aluminum siding. This is a small company (just three of them I think), and I had to call several times to get set up. And it took a while for them to get to my job. This is why the C for responsiveness. But once they started, they were prompt and professional, well worth the wait! I opted to wait on the porch work, but will hire them to do that soon. Note: I have found that the best contractors are the small, hands-on companies. They are all hard to reach, and take a while to schedule, but they tend to be fair, and do the best work!

Chuck did an excellent job. There were settlement issues with the chimney, causing the surface where the stone was to be installed to be out of plumb. Chuck was meticulous about examining the situation and working to install the new stone so that it was structurally sound; the structural problems are virtually unnoticeable after completion. Additionally, he installed a heavy, rough-sawn mantle that we had special ordered, and which required unique installation in order to support the weight. From the beginning Chuck was very helpful in informing us about options that we were unaware of. This allowed us to get the exact look that we wanted. We highly recommend him and would absolutely work with him again.
Mr Chuck Hipp was very professional and accommodating. He and his crew showed up when they said they would, and they were polite and diligent. When they were done, the steps looked like they were brand new, rather than 25 years old and they cleaned up the work area so you couldn't even tell they had been there. Chuck answered all of our (many) questions and gave helpful advice that saved us money. He even had his crew level our AC pad at no additional charge. I would not hesitate to call on Hipp Masonry Works for any future masonry needs and we recommend him without reservation.
The brick foundation had settled at a corner of my house causing mortar to break and a few bricks were broken. The crack was about 3/4 inch wide. Five holes were dug about 2 feet deep and jacks were installed to jack the brick siding back in place. Once the brick siding was in place cement was injected to hold the brick in place. The broken bricks were replaced. The lintel over the garage door, door and window were replaced. The mortar that was damaged on the house was removed and re-pointed. The Hipp Masonry crew were polite. They did excellent work. The crew cleaned up at the end of each day and after the job was completed.
I found Hipp Masonry on Angie's list along with 2 other vendors that were rated about the same. All 3 were rated good. I called all 3 and Chuck (owner) called me back within a couple of hours. 1 other vendor called me back several days later, never heard from the last one. Chuck said he was available to come over and look at the job the same afternoon so that was great. He came over and we looked at the outside of the fireplace and the chimney and we discussed some options. Chuck is a very nice gentlemen and it was clear he was very knowledgeable about his business. He also looked at our front porch that needs some work. He got back to me in a couple of days, gave us a price on both the fireplace and the porch, told me if i did the porch work he would do the fireplace for free. That sounded like a pretty good deal but we did think the porch price was a little high and with the holiday's coming we decided to hold off on the porch and get the fireplace done. Here is the deal. The fireplace was very poorly designed as in the opening of the fireplace was way to large for the size of the flue and the height of the chimney. Smoke would come out the front of the fireplace because there was too much air and not enough draft. Our fireplace company suggested we raise the bottom of the firebox to decrease the opening and bring the fire grate closer to the flue. We tested this before hand by putting bricks under the grate to raise it up and it worked but the fire required too much attention because the coals were too far a from the logs. What Hipp Masonry did was install a new layer of fire brick on the bottom and then install a row of bricks cut in half in front of the new layer of fire brick that matched the brick on the exterior of the fireplace. It is actually a 10 foot wall of brick with the fireplace at one end.The match is not perfect, but it close and it looks great. The gentlemen that the performed work, did a terrific job and it was clear he knew what he was doing as well. He answered all my questions and was meticulous about the craftsmanship. We are extremely pleased with how it turned out. We can't wait for it to dry and cure so we can use it. We will be calling Hipp Masonry back to do our porch work in the spring. Based on the job they did on the fireplace, I am sure the porch will turn out great as well. Highly recommend this company.
Excellent service. Chuck Hipp kept us fully informed of everything that was happening and consulted with us on all details to ensure the work would be to our satisfaction.
He and his crew were extremely courteous, hard-working, yet seemed to enjoy each other and have a lot of fun while they were working. It was very pleasant having them work at our home. They went out of their way to ensure we weren't inconveniences in any way. When finished, they powerwashed the brick 2 separate days, and even mowed the lawn underneath where their scaffolding had been built. They left no trash, no unfinished work, and a wonderful new wall.
I contacted Mr. Hipp via Angie's List after reading the reviews about his company and the work they have completed for other customers. He was very prompt in responding to my initial request -- stated he would go by my home and look at the brick steps to my home that had been terribly "repaired" by a contractor. After several days (he told me he couldn't get out to my house for a few days due to his schedule), he went by and then gave me a quote for the work. We agreed on the final price and he began and completed the work in two days. I was really impressed with the communication --- his son coming by after the first day of the work and explaining what work had been done and what would happen the next day. Mr. Hipp came by this morning to meet with me and to ensure that I was completely happy with the work done. YES -- the steps look great!!!! I must say that my front steps and stoop are large and the price may seem high but is reasonable for the size of the project. I highly recommend Hipp Masonry and will use them in the spring when I have some other work that needs to be done on my home.
I've been battling a leak around our bump-out roof for five years in Port Warwick. Our roofers did the best they could, but it turned out that the problem was not our roof but the construction behind our brick siding and the seals and lintels around our windows. Every year during storm season we would have a leaky roof. Our insurance company was (is) frustrated. Hipp Masonry came out and in two days had completely replaced the brick siding, lintels, sealing, etc around our windows. They took pictures of the areas behind the brick where shoddy construction had been the cause of the leaks. I was furious with the builder (Wayne Harbin) and asked Hipp to document what they saw. Hipp did so and gave us a document and a CD with all of the photos on it. They also (at no cost) tried to improve our brick patio that had been defaced by a cement solution incorrectly applied by another contractor. From start to finish, Hipp Masonry did a great job and did their best to fix our problems. They worked with our roofer as well, and coordinated the repairs with them. So far, no leaks!!
I am truly pleased with the brick masonry job performed by Hipp Masonry Works and very proud of my two new brick walls, one of which fits into a surface channel in the house siding. Two old 30 year 8 ft high walls had to be demolished and replaced since they were were not repairable after being damaged. Demolition and debris removal was fast and efficient and took only one day. The two new slightly lower brick walls measuring 20 ft long x 6 ft high and 8 ft long by 6 ft high also went up fast (less than 4 days). Work was led by the obviously highly experienced and talented company owner, and the walls were definitely built to last starting with a solid base, including reinforcing metal bars and grills, and finished off with good looking "pointing." And they are straight and level like they should be! The colors of the new brick and mortar closely match and blend with the old house foundation. Clean up after the job was also excellent. I was also pleased and impressed by the positive, supportive and friendly attitude displayed by the owner, as well as his small team, throughout the entire process. My neighbors have been very complimentary about the appearance of the new walls. I highly recommend Hipp Masonry to anyone needing excellent masonry work at a very fair and reasonable price.
Having owned my 95 year old classic Craftsman house for 15 years, I have learned that there is no such thing as a small project! My 30 foot tall chimney and fireplace showed it's age with cracked mortar and bricks as well as water leakage and some indications of structural problems. I was extremely please to find Chuck Hipp on Angie's list and particularly to note his long experience starting with working for his father, a brick mason, from his early teens, to his background with restoration projects. I would come to know him much better over the following month. Our relationship was a good one from the start. I noted from the first contact that Mr. Hipp was very contentious about keeping me informed. His first examination of the project was thorough and professional. He pointed out the structural problems that indicated metal having been used inside the chimney. He informed me from the start that we wouldn't really know the scope of the project until we took a look inside. He gave me a quote that was very reasonable based on the outwardly visible work but made sure to let me know that it was based on the minimum of unexpected work. He shared his daily rate for his crew that would be charged for additional work if necessary.
On the day they started I was amazed at the speed with which they began work. I work from home so I was able to observe how they worked throughout the project. They are a well oiled machine! The work very hard and clearly know what they are doing. They are very friendly and respectful and never minded me looking over their shoulder or asking questions. Chuck was careful to show me as they discovered problems. We discussed the possible solutions at each stage and then proceeded. At the end of each day, they cleaned and secured the area.
The diagnosis was not good. There was indeed metal, steel angle iron supports inside the had to be removed. They were almost rusted through. The facad of the fireplace was only one brick thick and there was no throat. The original builder was a great concrete man but not a brick mason! He had filled the entire area around the firebox and flue tiles with rubble and mortar. Code requires at least 1" clearance all around. There was no throat. Just a large rectangular area above the firebox. In addition, the foundation below the firebox was a hollow box with angle iron supports that were rusted and in danger of collapsing.
Working through a small hole, they were able to fill the hollow foundation with cinderblock and remove the angle iron supports. The work was tricky because a small area had to be removed and then built up with supporting bricks and the mortar had to harden before another small section could be worked. They finally got the foundation right and began on the firebox. The back of the original had a 1" gap and we agreed that the best thing was to remove it and build a new one. Once that was completed they built a proper throat tapered to the remaining original flue.
Then the repair of the external bricks on the chimney began. Over 95 years, the mortar had become very hard. they use a diamond saw followed by an impact hammer to chisel out the bad bricks and replace them. Chuck did an amazing job matching the new bricks to the old. It is almost impossible to tell the new from the old. The top third of the chimney work was on the roof and Chuck great pains to insure that they did no damage to the roof. My roof is tiled with special tiles that are easy to damage. They covered the whole work area with plywood. Finally they repaired the crown on the chimneys and installed stainless steel caps.
Through out the job, Chuck kept me apprised of the changes in the work and the expected costs. We settled up each week and he presented all of his hours of work and receipts for materials for me to inspect. I am extremely impressed with his integrity and his efforts to maintain good communications.
In the end I have a reconditioned and beautiful fireplace and chimney that I can be confident is safe and will last another 100 years!
I can recommend, without reservation, Chuck Hipp and his team as honest, expert and professional masons that will do a good job no matter how challenging the project.

Wow, just wow. I found Mr. HIpp here on Angies List and wanted to have him give me an estimate on some chimney repairs as well as repairs on our front steps. Not only was this to get an estimate done for this home but as a vetting process for work on another home we just bought that is large, all brick, older, lots of brick terraces, etc. I immediately saw that I would need to find a good mason to help maintain that home. We'd been in touch a number of times but our schedules hadn't yet meshed. Then he called me, was in town, they couldn't work on their current job and wanted to stop by and take a look at what needed repairs. He gave me a great price and did a ton of work. His team started work that day and worked HARD. And they were able to do a great match to our old crazy bricks that are almost impossible to match. His guys were nice, polite, and unbelievably hard working. There is no doubt in my mind who I will use for brick work on our next house. Can NOT recommend Hipp Masonry highly enough. All the reviews on here singing their praises are spot on. Chuck Hipp and his team are really that good.
I contacted Mr Hipp at Hipp Masonry for an estimate to repair lintels on approximately 30 windows on a two story brick condo building. He was quick to meet me for the inspection; showing up in the rain. His estimate came a couple days later. Hipp Masonry was one of 5 companies contacted for an estimate. One company (JES) was more expensive. Another felt the job too big for his company and didn't provide a quote. One company did not return any calls; another (Tidewater Masonry) called with a promise to return a call later, never called back or return my follow up calls.
Mr Hipp was willing to do the work in sections but offered a discount if we were to do the entire job. He was asked to attend the condo association meeting to discuss the repairs with the owners and did an excellent job explaining the work and representing his company. He was willing to stretch the payments out over three months so we could start the work early and not have to wait to collect all the funds before starting. During the work, he identified to us several additional repair areas that were needed, but he did not pressure us to get the work done by his crew. He also recommended colleagues with other expertise his crew did not have and that he was willing to work with to get the work accomplished. All his quotes were reasonable. We did include an additional $2400 worth of work and deferred two other repairs.
Mr Hipp started work on time as agreed and took about six weeks to complete repairs to 30 window lintels and rebuild an entire corner of the building. His team cleaned up and left the surrounding area with scant evidence that he'd been there. He accurately alerted us to the dust that was generated during the work so we could inform our neighbors and owners. Mr Hipp was true to his word and did everything he promised, including pointing repairs that were more extensive than first estimated. I personally observed his team on site, and they were diligent workers and pleasant to be around. I would hire his company again and recommend him to others.
I believe the above description pretty much tells the story. We will be having Chuck perform a lot of additional masonary work on our house in the spring when we add a sunroom.
Chuck also recommended a couple of other local businesses that he works with (sort of a Business Network) which so far are working out fine. One mortgage company for the refi of our son's home and a contractor for our sunroom project.
Chuck's estimate was competitive and his anaylsis of the work that needed to be done agreed with other masons from angies list. (3) He did an excellent job of matching the brick and motar as one would be challenged to know where the repair was. He and his workman were here for approximately 5 work days. The work included scafoldimg. His workman kept the site clean and neat, and were very competent. Aa little thing, but pleased my wife, he dropped off a portable potty for his folks to use. I found working with him easy and he was responsive to my phone calls; before, during, and following the completion of work. Would use him again and the system did work to bring me a positive outcome via angies list. It was my first experience and extremely positive. I would recommend him and use his services again if needed.
