Major Home Repair (General Contractor)
I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience with Home Equity Contractors LLC demands a warning to other homeowners. After the project wrapped up, I received a final invoice that included line items for work that was never performed. When I calmly pointed out the discrepancies with documentation in hand, instead of acknowledging the error or offering to review the charges, the response from the project manager turned hostile and threatening. Rather than resolving a straightforward billing professionally, I was met with intimidation tactics that were completely unacceptable. This is not how a legitimate contractor operates. Billing a customer for services not rendered is bad enough ? threatening them when they have the audacity to question it is something else entirely. If you are considering hiring Home Equity Contractors LLC, I strongly urge you to get ev
Response from Home Equity Contractors
"I rarely respond to negative reviews, but there are times that you have to stand up for yourself and defend your company. The work was completed in March of this year with this customer and there were no issues with the work. I reached out to the customer yesterday regarding his outstanding invoice that was over 60 days late to find out when he was going to be making a payment. I had already given him a break on the pricing for the additional work and he wanted more of a discount."

If you want to work with someone condescending, rude, confrontational, unprofessional, and whose contractors workmanship is probably the worst I have ever encountered in my 30 years of working with contractors, THIS IS YOUR GUY. I can ramble on about the false promises, the horrible workmanship, the constant delays, the lack of communication, the rude and confrontational text messages. I guarantee Mr. Shank will in fact respond to this review and try to flip the script and blame it all on me somehow. He talks very poorly about all his customers well at least the ones he doesn't like. Not sure what that is based on although I do have some idea what is based on. But he never made anything explicit, so I can't make accusations that he is a racist. So I am definitely not saying he is a racist because he didn't do anything racist. But if he was a racist it would explain why he didn't give two poops about doing good work for multiple projects I provided him. I also have multiple properties and was hoping to make Mr. Shank a lifelong contractor. In a nutshell, he has done 2 projects for me at 2 properties. One was installing a threshold for a glass enclosed shower stall. His crappy sub contractor (they are not employees) despite him saying they are employees, did not install any grouting on the threshold. Fast forward 1 year, and mold is popping up all around the threshold. Rather than dealing with this individual, I hired another contractor to fix up his mess. Second job, and my second mistake, I hired him for a full scale home renovation for around 50K. That project was an absolute disaster. He took 3 months to do what he promised to me verbally would be a 3 week job. I don't really want to spend 1 hour writing down all the crap he did wrong. I'll try so sum up the highlights. Ripped out old flooring, promised to make new flooring level after installing new concrete by using lasers. New flooring is totally not level and as bumpy as walking on your local trail. The shoe moldings around the flooring look like a child installed them. I had to argue with him to get him to regrout the bathroom which was in his contract in the first place. I can go on and on. For sure if you are someone that Mr. Shank likes and match his criteria of what he likes, whatever that could be I have no idea definitely not race related. He may do a great job for you and that may explain the great reviews. I myself had a horrible experience with Mr. Shank and his group of sub contractors who just plain do terrible work. Ignore my review or take it seriously, frankly this guy will keep getting business cause he's a great salesman. Even has a LinkedIN profile to show how professional he is. Epic scammer and fraud. Stay away.

I cannot recommend Brett and his crew highly enough. Our tub kept arriving from Home Depot damaged, but they kept coming back, working with us to get it installed - until we ordered from Wayfair! They did the removal of the old tub, install new, fixed the tile, installed fan boxes, fixed a squeaky floor, and sorted garage ceiling. They were wonderful and will definitely be our go to in the future! Thank you so much!

Getting a quote and scheduling was a breeze. And Ivan and Alex were on time, careful and pleasant to be around. They answered our questions and made good suggestions. And their workmanship was exceptional. Our herringbone backsplash was not easy to do, but it’s been done perfectly. They left everything sparkling clean, too. Can’t say enough good to recommend these folks.

Fantastic experience with Brett and his crew. Arrived on time, covered all the floors and countertops before starting, discussed a few design details, then got the job done in 2 days. Absolute professional installation of my large kitchen backsplash (approx 100 sq ft), every tile set perfect, even the difficult cuts. Cleaned up every area after job completed. Great value for what I paid. Will definitely consider hiring again for other projects around the house.

Excellent! They did interior, exterior painting and basement update with painting, dry wall and carpeting. Bathroom remodel for three bathrooms and put on a new roof. The house looked amazing once it was finished and sold for $50K more than it would have without the remodeling. So nice to have one person taking care of all the projects, and Brett Shankle was so responsive! All the crews were professional and their work was great. I highly recommend Home Equity Contractors and have referred them to many friends. Their work is amazing and a great value!

Please find a different contractor! We hired Brett’s company to replace flooring in our basement that was water damaged. The original quote included installing flooring and drywall repair. We had to stop the install and start over two times due to issues. The first issue was the way the flooring was being laid. Standard wood/laminate flooring should be laid out in a scattered/various pattern using planks cut in multiple lengths, however the install guy was cutting the wood in only 2 sizes and laying it down in a repetitive pattern. It looked horrible. We asked Brett to come out to the job and see for himself because we were concerned with the quality of the work, but he never came out. When the install guy started over, we realized he had not put down underlayment which was clearly included in the contract. They were placing luxury vinyl plank directly on the concrete slab with only a moisture barrier. Again, we had to have them stop the job and start over to do it properly. Brett still did not come out to the job site. We did not end up getting the drywall repair completed and asked him to remove that cost from our invoice, but he said we would still need to pay the full price because if he reworked the contract it would go up to account for starting the job over. Even though both times the job had to start over were as a result of his guys negligence. I’ve attached a picture that shows the first problem with the install. We’ve had flooring replaced and installed several times in previous homes and have never experienced someone attempting to install it in the way his guy was. There was no quality control on Bretts part. The install was done incorrectly multiple times and it could have been avoided if Brett had taken the time to make sure the job was being done properly. To make matters worse, we were penalized for his crews mistake and it left us feeling stressed out and ripped off. Please save yourselves the stress and find someone else to do your floors.
Response from Home Equity Contractors
"As a contractor, we strive to make every customer happy and to do a quality job on every job. We typically do not respond to reviews but sometimes you do have to stand up for the work that was completed and tell the other side of the story. The flooring had to be removed the first time because the homeowner said they did not like the flooring color that they chose. We removed the flooring at no additional charge. The homeowner ordered new flooring that was delivered the next day and we came back to install the following day. The flooring they ordered did not require an underlayment and in fact voided the manufacturer's warranty if it was installed with an additional underlayment.. The flooring was purchased from Floor & Decor. We called the store and they confirmed the information that the flooring was not supposed to be installed with an underlayment and Voided the warranty. We informed the homeowner who also called the store and was given the same information. The homeowner decided they still wanted the underlayment and we uninstalled the flooring again, installed underlayment, and re-installed the flooring again at no additional charge. So we uninstalled and installed different flooring 3 times at no additional charge. The drywall was not removed and replaced as it showed no signs of moisture or damage and there was no need to cause damage to the wall, baseboard, and shoe molding. Instead of reducing the fee, I told them we would call it even with the removal of the flooring that we did not charge for. We also repainted the customers baseboards and shoe moldings which were not on the estimate and we did not charge any additional money for it. I believe at the end of the day, we went above and beyond for the customer to make sure that they were happy and had a quality flooring installed. We have the before and after photos of the job along with all of the email communications from the customer. Unfortunately we cannot upload the finished photos here."

As a realtor, I engaged with Home Equity Contractors on behalf of my sellers to complete work to prepare their property for sale. From the first meeting to the completion of the property updates and repairs, Jimmy and his crew were top notch professionals! Their business model of "No up front costs and paying at closing" served my client’s needs and financial constraints so the sellers could leverage the equity in their home for a faster sale and higher profit. Jimmy worked collaboratively with me and the sellers to set a realistic and affordable budget as well as offer cost saving ideas without compromising quality. Communication was timely and the crews were professional and courteous, always cleaning up after each phase of work. The project consisted of new flooring, painting, a kitchen refresh, new lighting, landscaping and various plumbing, electrical and general property repairs. Jimmy was proactive in keeping me apprised of the work and he kept to the timeline which gave my sellers peace of mind. The finished project was beautiful and made the home market ready to sell and the property was under contract in less than 2 weeks! Home Equity Contractors were fantastic to work with and they delivered exactly what they promised. My sellers were extremely pleased with the process and the end product. I give Home Equity Contractors the highest rating and recommendation …A+
