We started on April 2nd with the splash done on our crawl space. A few days later two-thirds of our roof was removed in 2 days and a new floor added during a 6 day dry spell in April. We were lucky. The framers did a great job and often worked to dark in order to complete our open arena. I thought the framers ( Steve and Kevin ) the dynamic duo did a terrific job. We were without gutters for a few months and had a lot of rain. This caused water in our cement crawl space due to the negatively pitched old patio. After the new roof, shingles and gutters all was well. Its a good thing we decided to have the kitchen completely remodeled because half of the kitchen ceiling was removed due to the new plumbing above. The new kitchen took about 6 weeks to complete. Brian( Home Installation owner) made sure we had a stove top so my wife could cook. The Ultra Craft cherry wood cabinets from Boston Kitchens were beautiful and a good value. We thought the workmanship of the framers, hardwood floor installer, trimmers, and tile were first rate. We were satisfied with all the other crews. Brian's communication was good before, during and after construction. He made good on all the conditions of the contract. My wife and I were extremely happy with all the quality and workmanship displayed during construction. We were always on a first name basis with all the workers. We went with our gut feeling of Home Installation- Angie's list had a few recent negative reports on Home Installation which did not go along with the majority of the home owner's. I am glad we placed our trust in Brian because he reallly showed his true face.

We filed complaints with both the Better Business Bureau and the Illinois State Attorney General?s Office. Both complaints were eventually resolved, but not to our complete satisfaction. If you choose to use this contractor, or any contractor, please educate yourself using the Illinois State Attorney General?s office web page. Here?s a link: http://www.ag.state.il.us/consumers/homerepair_construction.html Make sure your contract includes a detailed list of all materials, including product, color, model, size, and brand name. Be sure you include doors, windows, flooring, countertops, roofing, siding, paint, drywall- every item should be listed in as much detail as possible. Make sure when reviewing the contract that ?to match? is spelled out, to match what, how, with what materials? Make sure your contract includes the total cost for work performed, including charges for estimates and additional labor, get an actual figure, ?at cost? or ?cost plus labor? is not sufficient. Procedures for extra labor should be written into the contract. Any extra work done by subcontractors should be itemized with expenses for materials and labor BEFORE the work is agreed upon. It should be written and signed by all parties. Get ALL oral promises in writing; this should include any ?free? upgrades or work ?given? to you. Who will repair or pay for the repair of any upgrade items installed improperly? Check your local village or town hall to verify a contractor?s licensing. Do not use a contractor who has not been licensed to work in your town. Request lien wavers from every sub-contractor who works on your home and a final waiver from the contractor. Insist that this is done; it protects your home from any potential liens should the contractor fail to pay the sub-contractors or suppliers, even if you have paid the contractor in full. Verbal verification from sub-contractors is not enough. Make sure there is a sufficient amount left to pay at the end of the contract AFTER the punch list to use as leverage in the event you should have a dispute over any work. $1000 is not enough to ensure the completion of the punch list. We would recommend at least 20%. Use a third party escrow company to hold your payments until you approve the work done. If a contractor does not agree to this, find another one. We understand that Home Installation Professionals is now using this model as a business practice, and we are happy to hear that. Finally, insist the work is done to your standards. It is ok to be as picky as you need to be to make sure sloppy or incorrect work is corrected. Do not allow a contractor to make you feel as if you are being unreasonable. If you have paid your money and held up your end of the contract, then they need to make sure the work is expertly done, and done to YOUR satisfaction, not the contractor?s satisfaction, especially if that contractor repeatedly claims that customers can expect 200% satisfaction.

Brian Weinstock was hired to remodel two properties Sep 2007. House #1 was a kitchen, breezeway and master bedroom renovation to be completed 11/20/07. House #2 was a second story master bedroom suite, family room/kitchen/basement addition with a full deck and garage to be completed 12/30/07. On Oct 1, $68,333 was paid as a down payment on a total project cost of $205,000. A breezeway was framed in on house #1 and work was halted by the building inspector as there was no building permit and the breezeway could not be built without footings. House #1 was not completed until March 2008 3 ? months after planned completion. On 11/26/07 Weinstock said due to the economy an early payment of $35,000 was required or work could not continue. Even though our payments were well ahead of the work that had been completed, because house #2 was already in complete demolition and we already had sunk a lot of money into the project, we couldn?t afford to have work stopped so we gave Weinstock another $35,000. Only three weeks later on 12/16/07 Weinstock required yet another early payment of $35,000 or, as his Email says, ?we will have issues?. Having sunk even more money in the project, we made another early payment. 1/21/08 we were told that HVAC ductwork in the entire house would have to be replaced which Weinstock failed to anticipate?an additional $5,700. A garage was built and although a driveway was included on the building permit Weinstock said the garage was included in the contract but connecting it to the existing driveway was not included. 5/14/08, 4 ? months after the project was to be completed we had no insulation or drywall, only bare studs, windows and siding. Since there was no projected end date, we informed Weinstock via Email that he was no longer welcome on our property and we would be consulting our attorney. 5/27/08 Weinstock wanted to buy out of the contract and because of the emotional and financial toll this man was taking on our lives we agreed. 6/12/08 we and our attorney met with Weinstock and his attorney and came to a verbal approval on a buyout agreement. 7/9/08 Weinstock did not show up for the plumbing and electric rough inspection ? both failed. 7/29/08 Email Weinstock wrote ?Do your deck yourself's (sic). You will probably like the result better any way- I would buy the absolute cheapest stuff to build it.? 6 weeks after the meeting with the attorneys Weinstock decided not to sign the buyout agreement and he and his attorney wrote a new buyout agreement. We agreed to sign the new agreement as it had been 10 months and we still had an unfinished house. 8/7/08 as arranged by his attorney we signed the new agreement. 8/8/08 the 1st return payment to us was due-it was not until 8/12/08 we finally received payment and Weinstock?s signature. 8/29/08 the 2nd payment to us was due-we didn?t receive it until 9/19/08. 8/29/08 the Lien waivers and Contractor?s Sworn Statement were due-we did not receive them until 9/10/08.

After living in an aging home for years I finally decided to take the plunge and build a new bedroom suite over my existing living room. Brian and Home Install Professionals were very helpful from day one, giving me a sense of the upcoming budget and process etc.. I was really impressed with the whole design system he has in place. I always felt that he was keeping an eye on my final budget so I could make selection that worked in my price range. The addition took about 4 months to complete and it was stressful to have my home under construction for that long! But it was really worth it, the finished product is exactly how I imagined it. Brian was able to complete all my punch list items on time and we ended up only slightly over our initial budget.

It was evident as time passed that Brian was under increasing pressure from his other jobs and his cash flow issues. He would rarely come by the site and would become animated when I called him to ask questions, vacillating between hostility and amiability. During one call he began shouting and cursing so I hung up.He called back shortly thereafter and apologized and was more civil. This sort of on/off behavior continued through my interactions with him. In early November 2008, I noted to Brian that my total cash outlay was getting close to the total agreed contract price and we wanted confirmation that he would resume covering the costs. Per Brian, because of his financial strains, he could not fund the project to completion until perhaps the spring or summer. He claimed that his company would be filing for bankruptcy. I asked that he account for the $142k I had paid him directly. Over the next few weeks he provided receipts showing payments of materials and costs that amounted to nearly $100,000. When I asked about the remaining $45k+ Brian responded that he was ?entitled? to profit on the project. Brian then insisted that if he was to continue as the general contractor, we would have to pay him a ?draw? of $2,000 per week (which he later lowered to $1,000 per week). Needless to say, we did not take him up on his offer. I will not recount here the many, many failings of Brian on the project. However, it is apparent that they key mistake he made is that he never secured bids from subcontractors so that he did not know the total cost of the project. In my opinion, it is now clear that from the start there were going to be significant overages. If he had, then his cash flow issues would never have impacted the project because we were making the payments. On the plus side, Brian had good and creative ideas for the project that have worked out well. And within his means, he made initial good faith attempts to correct the inevitable errors. I am of the opinion that Brian is not a ?bad? man but was caught between his failure to cost the project properly and his lack of access to credit to fund the overages that resulted. If he was in a similar position on his many other projects, it is not surprising that the strain took its toll. As it stands now, we are near to completing phase 1 of our project and just beginning phase 2. We have had no contact from Brian in more than a month (other than an invoice which we will not pay). My best estimate is that we will end up with a final cost nearly $100,000 over the contract price for the work that was covered in the contract (not counting our changes). We will be commencing action against Brian and his company to recover the overages. In my opinion, potential customers should be very wary of doing business with Brian and his companies. Brian blames his troubles on the financial crisis. Given that we were providing the funding, this should have had no impact if he had proper staffing. Just a quick note that Mr. Weinstock's response is replete with false statements, e.g., that we were unreasonable, asked for work outside the contract scope, and that "his" subs are finishing the work - they are under contract to us and most have no desire to work with or for him. He owes money to many of them as well. Our dissatisfaction is with Mr. Weinstock, not his subs. As the project nears completion, the cost to us is estimated to exceed the contract price by more than $180,000 even though we have reduced the scope of work. Clearly Mr. Weinstock grossly underestimated the costs of delivering the contract. We have never asked for anything more than was in the contract (not withstanding Weinstock's false claims to the contrary). We have been contacted by several other former customers of Mr. Weinstock who had similar experiences, though none involving as much money as ours.

The shower pan in our very small master bath developed a leak. The room was last remodeled over 20 years ago so an update was in order. From the demo through the finished work Brian and his team were a pleasure to work with. My phone calls to Brian were either answered personally by Brian or if I had to leave a message my call was returned quickly, usually within minutes. His team was always courteous, hard working, and cleaned up after themselves. The finished result is excellent and the attention to detail shows. We could have had the room done for less but wanted quality products and workmanship. An estimate by another company offering this level of quality came in higher than Brian's.

Brian gave a very competitive quote. The workers finished the work in a little more than a week and were very courteous, clean and professional. Originally they did not install shelves that extended the width of the closet, but they cam back to put in new shelving that did with proper support underneath. They did a very good job of matching the outside molding with the existing 80+ year old molding. It looks like the closet had always been there which is what we wanted to achieve.

Overall, I would have to say the project went well. But with any home improvement there are unexpected things that come up and changes that happen. At times those things were difficult to work through with Brian but in the end he delivered what we had imagined and are very happy with the end result. Brian works with a great group of tradesmen from rough carpentry, electricians, HVAC, plumbers and finish wood workers that were outstanding and did a great job throughout the project. The project was estimated to be about 10-14 weeks in length and it was completely finished at about the 29th week. This definitely took considerably longer than expected and due to that fact Brian wrote off the balance that we owed him at the end of the project. We appreciated that but in the end what really matters is that we love the basement and are thrilled to have this beautiful space for our family to enjoy!

"BY FAR THEIR BASEMENT INCLUDED MUCH HIGHER LEVEL OF FURNITURE GRADE FINISH DETAIL THAT WE NORMALLY ENCOUNTER. MUCH OF THIS DETAIL WAS A WORK IN PROGRESS AND TOTALLY CUSTOM DESIGNED, MADE AND INSTALLED AS WE WENT. EVEN THOUGH WE DESIGNED THE BASEMENT SPACE AND HAD FULL ARCHITECTURAL GRADE 3D DRAWING FOR IT PRIOR TO START WE DID NOT HAVE A FORMAL DESIGN FOR ANY OF THE MILLWORK PRIOR TO STARTING THIS PROJECT, JUST A PICTURE OUT OF A BOOK THE HOMEOWNER LIKED. TROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR WE EVOLVED FINE FINISHED DETAIL AND FURNITURE GRADE PRODUCTS THAT WE COMPLETELY DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED OURSELVES IN OUR OWN SHOPS THAT EVERYONE LOVED. BECAUSE OF THE ON SITE DESIGN PROCESS, STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING DELAYS AND A DELAY BY THE VILLAGE THIS PROJECT TOOK LONGER THAN WE ANTICIPATED BUT AS YOU CAN SEE THE WAIT WAS WORTH IT AND THE HOMEOWNERS LOVE THEIR BASEMENT. AS FAR AS VALUE, I AM SURE THEY WILL TELL YOU OURS WAS BY FAR THEIR LOWEST AND BEST QUOTE THEY RECEIVED FOR THIS PROJECT. WE NOW HAVE INSTALLED AND IMPLEMENTED A COMPREHENSIVE ARCHITECTURAL GRADE CAD 3D MILLWORK DESIGN PROGRAM THAT WILL EASIER ADDRESS DESIGN CHALLENGES AND DRAMATICALLY EXPEDITE THE MILLWORK PROCESS. THEY ARE AWESOME PEOPLE AND WE ARE PROUD TO HAVE FINISHED A BASEMENT SPACE THEY LOVE."

Originally, we just needed to fix our foundation problem and we knew we wanted to expand our house to accommodate our family's needs. You and your architect took our ideas and offered suggestions. The results are perfect. The flow of our home is very conducive to our needs and the work is beautiful. We appreciated your TEAM of professionals. Everyone who entered our door was cognizant that they were in our home. I know having our family of four children around everyday while the men were working was a challenge. But each trade was respectful of our presence and our property. They always cleaned up at the end of the day and kept the work environment safe. In addition, your staff arrived promptly and worked efficiently. In addition, each trade was very talented in their respective specialty. Each offered real time on-sight solutions when necessary. They were friendly and trustworthy. Each trade seemed to know the other and they all have a good working relationship with each other. Selecting a contractor is a very important decision. It's not only about the total cost of the job or the timing of the job. It's about choosing to be in a close relationship while making some big decisions. We feel grateful to our neighbor who recommended you to us. You are trustworthy, on time, knowledgeable, experienced, well known, and reputable. You are a good adviser and are always available. Most of all, we really felt like a team working with you and we truly feel you care about not only our home, but us as well. Since this addition, we have continued to call Brian for other improvements, though much smaller in scope, his professionalism and quality have been a constant. Without a doubt, Home Installation Professionals is an excellent contracting company.

I shopped around with many different contractors. The quotes I received were much too high, and the ones that came in too low wanted me to go out and purchase all the supplies and have it delivered here for them. Then came Brian, he was very professional, knew the business and knew exactly what my basement needed to make it stand out. His quote was affordable and the work was top notch. Brian s crew were all very professional, skilled and on time. I would definitely recommend and reuse Home Installation Professionals.

In a nutshell, we got a new house. Brian & his crew totally remodeled & expanded the interior & exterior of our 4 bedroom home while we lived in it. This required them to coordinate their work with us, always maintaining living space for us - a kitchen & a bedroom & bath - throughout the project. We found his crews to be very considerate of our situation. While the result is basically the plan we had asked for, Brian took our request & suggested many details and enhancements we had not considered & that added to the livability of the final result. We wanted to open up the house, an early 70's design that had many separated rooms & limited views of the outside. The final product was this & more. Though the work was completed over a year ago, not a day goes by that we don't take a minute to admire the finished project, thankful that we had a conscientious contractor handling the work from start to finish! We found Brian to be truly intent on giving us the results (if not more than) we had asked for. In the ratings below, note that the final cost came in higher than the original estimate because we chose to add features & to make upgrades to the design that we hadn't specified in the contract.

I couldn't believe how great an experience this remodeling project was. I have been through other remodeling projects in the past, so I was reluctant to start this process over again. From the very beginning, Brian was always available to answer any questions I had. He would continually follow up to make sure that we were satisfied with the days progress and if I had any concerns. What I am most impressed with is the professional staff that has been with the company for years. They take pride in their work and it shows. Their knowledge in their particular field is obvious by looking at the small details that make the basement "custom".

With Brian's design, the old rooms and new rooms blend so nicely. Brian handled the project exceptionally well! The work was on time, in budget, and the guys worked hard to minimize the inconvenience. The quality of the work is exceptional, the products they used are of excellent quality, Brian and his team are very professional (and they clean up after their work everyday!), and the communication from Brian was wonderful. Brian stayed within my budget, stayed on schedule, and he strove to make sure I was happy with the results, which, as a homeowner, was exactly what I wanted. Because we've done plenty of renovating to this old house, we know the pitfalls. We interviewed and researched 7 companies before going with Home Installation Professionals. While conventional wisdom says go with the middle bid, we ignored this advice and hired Brian, whose bid came in tens of thousands of dollars less than even the lowest of his competitors and included substantial work they did not even factor into their pricing. In particular, the other estimates included either a crawl space or foundation with "underpinnings", rather than the full basement Brian included. We also were delighted with how courteous and respectful the workers were and how they always left the work site orderly and tidy. Equally impressive was the quality of materials consistently used. For example, the contract specified vinyl siding, but Brian said cement board was superior. He also ordered the transom windows we desired and agreed to replace sliding glass doors with French doors.

Brian and his crew are the finest construction professionals I have ever encountered. Someone was at our house working every single day - progress was always being made. Brian always returned our calls within 5 minutes. Any concern we had was addressed on the spot, always to our satisfaction. His crew was very sensitive to the fact that a baby was coming, and the more they finished before the arrival, the better it would be for everyone. Brian had at least one other job bigger that ours going on at the same time. I never felt like our project suffered because of Brian's other commitments. He managed his resources actively and well. Throughout the project, Brian came to us with ideas for improving our project (cement board siding instead of vinyl, granite counter tops for bathroom, solid oak doors and trim, etc). We agreed whenever we could afford it, and our house is much nicer because of it. I truly believe our happiness was Brian's goal. We are lucky to have found him.

I first noticed Home Installation Professionals as I drove past a job sight where they were working on Golf road. Since I past the place every day I was able to see the progression of the job. It was always neat and clean at the job sight at the end of the day and the work (an addition )was done fairly quickly. I contacted Brian Weinstock and had him come and look at the job I needed done (water damage to the kitchen). The quote for a kitchen remodel was reasonable (about what I expected) and work was started. I have been very pleased with the work that was done. The workers are all extremely nice, professional and respectful. The work was basically completed in 6 weeks. Any questions that I had were answered and whatever I wanted done was completed as specified. Brian made helpful suggestions that come from experience and also made sure that everything was done correctly. Everything looks beautiful, the work was done professionally and I would not hesitate to use the company again.
