<p><strong>In a nutshell:</strong></p> <p><strong>Carpentry: Excellent</strong></p> <p><strong>Communications skills: Abysmal</strong>.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /></p> <p>I joined Angie's list due to work this man had performed at a new neighbor's home a block from us. She did warn me of "difficulty" in communicating with him due to a hearing or other issue and all was via e-mail with exception of recent text messages.</p> <p>First contact was a year ago. He had several personal health and family issues over this year which led to his beginning the job yesterday. He was to have been here on Monday but ran into an issue of inspector timing on another job so began yesterday morning after he apologized and then said he would be here all day until totally finished on Tuesday. </p> <p>He arrived at about 9:30am--all seemed great, things were progressing well. My husband had already had to do some work which was necessary due to recent rain and the inability of Mr. Andrews to come when originally hoped (he was ill) Mr. Andrews seemed pleased with what had been done and with the materials we had there although my husband had apparently gotten the wrong insulation. Mr. Andrews spoke to my husband on the phone and I took photos of the opening to more fully explain to my husband what was happening/why the insulation he bought was the wrong kind. Mr. Andrews did leave for a short while yesterday to get some shims. I went outside at about 3 pm--curious to see the progress. About half of the work was done, the work area was still set up but he and his son were not there. I came around to the front of the house to see Mr. Andrews and his son begin driving away. I walked up to front of yard near the street where they pulled over to the curb. It was very hot and muggy, Mr. Andrews told me he couldn't work any more that day--was not up to it health wise since he was just very ill for a couple of weeks. I am an RN and fully understood and told him his health came first. They said they would be back in the morning. I did think it was odd that they did not make any effort to tell me or text me before they were driving away. It was a total coincidence that I happened to come out when I did. It ended up raining about 15 min. later so no harm done. Chalk another one up to poor communication skills.</p> <p>I had to work today. My husband had to stay and work from home due to the wood work schedule change. My husband is a professional engineer. He is also a very kind gentleman and offered to get some ply wood for Mr. Andrews to stand on in the pachysandra next to the last board to be fixed rather than get his feet stuck in the plants. Mr.. Andrews COMPLETELY and erroneously accused my husband of not liking him walking in our plants as well as criticizing his work. I know my husband. He is NOT AT ALL that kind of person. I have actually been told in the past that he is actually pretty easy to work with for an engineer. He asks questions because he likes to know the details of how it all works--especially from an expert carpenter. Mr.. Andrews dropped the board, told my husband he was done and wasn't going to finish the job, he couldn't work with us since my husband didn't like him walking in the plants and he believed my husband was criticizing his work. My husband tried to tell the man this was not at all the case. Mr. Andrew's sons were both there and apparently understood the truth that COMPLETELY was misinterpreted by Mr. Andrews. </p> <p>There were other communications issues along the way that caused head scratching. We thought Mr. Andrews was going to give us a list of needed materials for us to order. He did not. He did tell us he was a labor only carpenter. We did, however originally think after the initial contact that Mr. Andrews would at least let us know what materials he required. We thought we would get a written estimate. We did not receive anything in writing except what was in our Angie's List e-mails. We chalked that up to our own inexperience and possible misinterpretation of what was said in our in-person original contact with him so very long ago. We trusted him.</p> <p>Given the rain of the last 3 weeks, Mr. Andrew's recent illness and the gaping hole in the side of the house-my husband did much more work on this project than he wanted or ever expected to . This included all measurements and figuring out what and where to find the materials needed (the clap board is an unusual width) My husband had to put up sheathing and fix the roof line to protect from the rain. It took hours he doesn't have to spare. The bulk of the clap board wood work was left for Mr. Andrews who had said all was great when he got here yesterday. If we had not seen Mr. Andrew's work and also had had a deadline of any kind, we would not have had him work for us in the beginning. I feel we gave him a LOT of slack/understanding given the issues he had and how much time we waited. </p> <p>Today, was totally mind boggling! The man just packed up and left. He apparently can not handle any questions or curiosity He did come back telling my husband his sons told him to take whatever we decided his work was worth. The original labor proposal was for $750.00. We furnished/paid for all materials. Mr. Andrews told my husband the work last board would be about $50.00.. The final payment was $700. </p> <p>Again, we will not have him for anything ever again--given his bizarre reaction to my husband, we are sure he would not come back. The work he did finish was good. His communications skills are very poor.</p>

"Sadly, I expected this review to be worse than it is. But I am happy he grade the work accurately. This angieslist member hired me because of a job I did for their neighbor ( another angieslist member ). I spent more than a month working on the exterior siding of their neighbor. That was 2 years ago. They not only praised that work, but they also join angieslist because of the work I did. They even wrote a review of that work (please see their review listed right here on my review list). He bought the siding I needed and I installed it to the best of my ability. He also bought all kinds of things that I could not use and were inappropriate for the job. This is the source of the bad communication. All the rest of the review is just a series of silly exaggerations that I think speak for themselves. It did reach a point when I let him know that I could not work for him anymore because he was distracting the work by his constant unnecessary comments and critics. I finished the job (but not the additional work he wanted me to do) And I asked him to pay me whatever he felt was fair…………. but before he paid me anything, he needed to understand I would never work for him again. In 30 years of contracting, I have never told a customer I would never work for them again."

Jim was very accommodating to our needs and budget. He kept us informed of each step of the project, fit us in quickly and had the railing finished within a couple days. We're very happy with the results and will be calling Jim in the future! <br />

The staircase in our home had separated from the wall and the support under the stairs had been compromised. Jim was able to not only provide updated support to the staircase, he was also able to reposition the stairs to their original position. The stairs are now even more secure, while still looking completely original to the house. In addition, he repaired a broken railing. <br /> All this work, which included having to go through a plaster wall, was cleaned up perfectly. I was extremley happy with the results and will definitely be using Jim again in the future. <br />

I hired Jim to install 2 security storm doors. Right at the onset he responded promptly in all of our communications, he was very courteous and polite. Initially we had a miscommunication because of bugs in this app ( we are limited in our ability to send a full message through the app) be that as it may, we figured it out and was back on course in no time. Jim showed up on time as he said he would. He completed the work within several days of starting the job. I am very please with the work he and his son did.

He has been very easy to work with and had no problem with rescheduling 2 of my jobs as the materials did not make it in on time. <br /> He has was here on time, cleaned up each day, and kept my in the loop on the progress. Very happy with the completed work and would definitely rocommend. <br />

Even thought we planned this out together some of my ideas just could not be done. Jim was very aware of how I wished this to look so when glitches came up...he stopped the work and discussed everything with me before proceeding. I am very impressed with that because I have worked with others who really did not care,and completed the work not to my satisfaction. He just left my home and I am very happy with what he has done and would definitely work with him again. He is very kind and professional. <br />

Jim came out and inspected the cracked joists. He gave me two options for fixing the issue. He was honest and detailed with his price quotes. I chose to have him jack up the joists and install steel supports for now. Jim did need to reschedule once but was very flexible about rescheduling, coming out after 5:00pm to accommodate my schedule. He did the work quickly and neatly. I am very satisfied with the work he did and will call him again in the future. <br />

Jim responded to my email almost immediately and we were able to set up a time to look at work that needed to be done. he then fit me into his busy schedule within a few days, and he and his son came and completed the work mentioned above in a timely and very satisfactory fashion. I was so impressed with Jim and his son and their professionalism and straight forward explanations. and their prices seem more than fair. I always have maintenance around my old home and will absolutely contact Jim again for help. <br />

Jim was awesome. So easy t o talk to and work with. did the job exactly as I described. We were so happy with the quality of the work when he finsihed the intial job that we hired him for which was to rebuild the driveway gate, that I hired him for 3-4 other projects. He was on time - completed the work very timley and with quality craftsmanship. I will be looking for Jim for any of my other carpentry needs - he was fantastic! <br />

Jim was very detailed in the proposal he presented, arrived on time. His work was detailed and meticulous. He was extremely neat and tidy, cleaned up perfectly. Very professional and knowledgeable. He finished easily within the time set forth in the proposal. As a homeowner for 12 years I have found it very difficult to find a competent person to want to complete these small tasks. First off, Jim quickly responds to emails. We set up an appt. to look at the things we needed done and went over them so he'd understand exactly what we wanted. He sent us an estimate very quickly, helped give us an idea of costs on the materials as well. He bought the materials for us, unless we needed to pick them out (ie: the blinds), saving us from buying the wrong things and carting them home. He and his son worked together. They couldn't have been any nicer. When the job went over the expected time, they just came an extra day, but didn't charge more. <br /> In a word, they were terrific. And trustworthy. And kind. <br />

"I'm not sure why this report is on my record in a negative light? The work was a labor only project (the customer bought and provided all the materials). I was paid "FAR" less than the exaggerated sum of $1,000 claimed. That alone is a distortion of reality. It took less than 8 hours total working time to complete. Also, I am not a plumber nor did I charge her for plumbing. She hired a plumber I recommended because she needed one.The writer of this report could not find anyone in her town to do the work. When first contacted, I refused the project because of the distance from my home. Month's later, I agreed to help because of her persistence. This project was never about time or money. I lost both. In view of this report (some 2 month's after it was complete) There is NO complaint about the quality of the work because the job was done well. It seems I took to long to do quality work?"

We've hired Jim before to build built-in shelves in our home and attach our fireplace mantel. He always does a great job. I watched him build the stairs, and he put more than adequate support underneath. Our home is older, and he takes that into account - a perfectly straight-on porch stair would look "off" when the 130-year-old-house is a bit crooked, so he custom-cut everything so it would sit well with the house. <br /> Jim is always professional, friendly, hard-working, and does quality work at a reasonable price. He listens to what you want, but also pulls in his expertise to make great suggestions. He suggested using composite decking material for the stairs so it would be no-maintenance. He also suggested using white boards for the risers and cedar on the treads - something I hadn't considered, but it looks fantastic. We're totally happy with the stairs and will definitely use Jim for our home projects in the future. <br />

If there is a loser or shyster in the crowd, I'm usually the first to beg them to take my money and rip me off. Jim Andrews has finally changed my luck. An outstanding experience! I had attempted to replace the floor myself and botched the job. Jim was polite and efficient. He did an absolutely beautiful job of fixing my mess and giving me a great bathroom floor. He also discovered and slow leak in the toilet while removing it to put the tiles down. He immediately went to the hardware store to get parts to fix that leak so that we would not have problems down the road. We are THRILLED with the job and will ask him to come back for other jobs in the future. I have already started making my list! <br />

To start off, Jim was very helpful in making suggestions as to what entry and storm door types and sizes I should select from. I then purchased both doors from a big box store and Jim picked them up. He installed the entry door and did a fantastic job. He couldn't install the storm door on the same day as it came from the big box store in a damaged state. So, Jim graciously returned it and picked up a new storm door. He installed it a few days later and also did a very good job. I am very satisfied with his work as he is very easy to communicate with and his work is top notch!

Jim and Chad picked up my door at Lowes and dropped it off on the day we agreed. It was cold and rainy on the day they installed the door. They went right to work and didn't stop until it was installed. The work they did was absolutely outstanding. The door looks beautiful and I feel very secure and safe in my home now. Jim made sure that I could lock and unlock the door. (It was a little tricky.) When they finished, they cleaned up and even took both my door and storm door to the curb to be picked up by the garbage men the next day. I had asked Jim if he could take a look at my sister's storm door. She lives on the same street as I do. The hinges were not holding the glass in place. They went over and tightened the hinges on the door. I can't say enough about Jim and Chad. I have a lot of work to be done at my house and I will be using them again. They have a great work ethic, are professional and are very personable. <br />
