<p>I interviewed 5 contractors before selecting Jim Hicks and his group. Jim came across as honest and forthright, I did not get a sales pitch. He listened to what I wanted and came back with a fair quote. It wasn't the least expensive, and it wasn't the highest. He took the time to meet with us twice before we could decide. </p> <p>After selecting him, he set us up with his general contractor, Justin. I felt comfortable working with Justin from the very start. He made himself accessible to me at all times, by phone, text or email. He constantly kept me in the loop on what was happening when, which team would be working, and worked harm to make sure we were inconvenienced as little as possible. He took time to explain what was being done, in what order, and why. His teams; the engineer, brick workers, framers, and drywall installers were all very professional. They all worked together, and showed respect for each other, Justin, and our home. One structural issue came up, and Justin halted work immediately until it could be addressed and resolved. We have a steel home, so attaching the roof presented some challenges. He continually worked hard to make sure I was getting what I wanted and worked with me on designing and deciding on details as they came up. Justin paid very close attention to details so that the finished project was correct, many of which I wouldn't have thought of, or known enough to ask. </p> <p>The project from start to finish took from April to October, came within a couple thousand of the original quote (because of some added features) and I am thrilled with the results. In order to save money, we requested to do the finishing work ourselves; trim work, tiling, door frames, painting, etc.. They were very flexible, working with our requests, and did everything they could to make our work easy and offered helpful suggestions along the way. </p> <p>The room is beautiful, exactly what I wanted. It works seamlessly with the rest of the home, and doesn't look like an addition. We will definitely use them again if another project comes up. </p> <br />

It went okay. A few times workers did not show when expected or showed up much later. The work done was good enough and the crew was very personable.

"I am very disapointed in the grade we received from this member, despite the fact that they said in their reveiew "they would hire us again." I guess this project proves the rule "no good deed goes unpunished". There is a saying among contractors "Don't go behind another contractor and fix their mess" which is what {removed member name} asked us to do after he had fired another contractor for the job he was doing on a new deck. Against our better judgement we not only agreed to fix the deck, the broken siding, trim and windows, but also agreed to a deadline time limit to complete the project. Despite working through snow and rainy days we completed the project on time. {removed member name} expressed that he was very please with our craftsmanship and then asked us to look at several other projects he needed on the home, to include kitchen and bathroom remodels. It was after the completion of the project when things started going sideways. When we asked for final payment, {removed member name} told us that our contract (all 6 pages of it) was so loosely worded he couldn't believe that we would work with such a document and proceeded to attempt to re-negotiate the final amount due. It took us TWO MONTHS after the project was complete to receive payment and even then there was a disputed amount. The good news is that the neighbors loved our work and the word of mouth referrals have led to multiple other projects in the Kingsmill, Williamsburg neighborhood. The price was great, we did purchase a lot of stuff ourselves <br /> (appliances, faucet etc) so the price was more for their labor and <br /> coordination between all the different folks that need to work on the <br /> house. We removed most of the plaster on the wall that was being <br /> removed, and painted ourselves. <br /> Jim and Justin turned our tiny one person kitchen into a space that many people can enjoy at one time. There were snags along the way, it is an old house, that caused some delays, like the ceiling coming down on the carpenters, but Justin did everything he possibly could to ensure the job stayed on track and as close to what we budgeted as possible. Their office coordinator Sharon made it easy to contact and set up appointments with the cabinet makers and flooring folks. <br /> The only thing we marked down was punctuality, and that was because some of the subcontractors weren't always on time. The project was slated to take 3-5 weeks, and it took a little over 3 months. This was also due to unexpected add ons, such a new ceiling had to go up and more plaster had to be removed from sections of wall.

This was the first time that I used a contractor for a large (large to me) project. Overall I was very pleased. I had planned to obtain several quotes on the roof but in the end Jim Hicks was the only contractor to quote the work. Jim showed up for the consultation with a drawing of the roof that detailed the roof?s pitch and size from aerial photographs available on the internet. Jim needed our time for the consultation to find out if we had any special concerns and to view our house from the ground. The use of technology by Jim Hicks as well as their qualification as a Certain Teed partner impressed me. The quote for the basic roof installation was in line with what one of my neighbor?s was quoted earlier by another contractor. <br /> <br /> I am very happy with the process and the results. There really wasn?t a lot of time between when the roof was started and completed. Jim Hicks was prompt in quoting the work and in starting and completing the job. I was especially happy that everyone maintained control on the job site and cleaned up after themselves. <br /> <br /> Justin Foreman stayed on top of our job kept me and my wife informed of the progress. I was very happy to have someone explaining how they can go ahead and get started on our work due to revised scheduling and that work is already finished. <br /> I plan to use Jim Hicks for future home improvement projects. <br />

Jim Hicks came out to the house and did a water test on our roof to determine the source of the leak. Previously we had another company come out and repair it with no luck. Jim found three leaks on the roof, all confirmed with a water test. Crew was scheduled quickly and they were very efficient. Best news is that the leaks are finally repaired and we can rest easy. <br />

Jim came and looked at the issue and determined what needed to be done. He gave me a fair estimate and we scheduled a date for the work to be completed. The gentlemen who came to repair the ceiling were on time, friendly and efficient. All the work was completed in one day. I did call them to come back and paint the ceiling into my living room so that there would not be a visible paint line where the rooms separated. They were very understanding about it and came back the very next day and finished painting.

The water hose test is the key. No wasted time doing repairs that "may" fix the problem as I had already tried. They found the problem, made the repairs promptly, and after the test of a good rain the other night, NO LEAKS!!! It turned out great. I thought the quality was excellent. I was impressed with how responsive Jim was to any questions we had. The project took longer than we thought but it was due to weather and unforseen things coming up. We had issues with squirrels in our attic so it was frustrating to ensure that all the squirrels were out and could not get back in before Jim could start the work. Their tools were always put away neatly and they cleaned up well before they left each day. I would recommend him to others. We have had lots of complaints from neighbors about how nice the house looks.

The quality of the work was excellent. This was the first time we used Jim services and they were great to work with. I would recommend him to anybody. They accommodated us to meet a deadline on a house we were trying to close on. They bent over backwards to make it happen for us. They had very fair pricing. Everyone was extremely professional in the way they handled it, they were friendly, and followed up when they said they would. I dealt with them solely over the phone and they were very reliable and responsive.

He did an excellent job. I was impressed with how he always got back to me, I never had to chase him to return my phone calls or answer questions. He originally came to just repair some places in the roof that were leaking. He found that everywhere under the roof was rotting and showed my husband that it needed to be replaced. We took Jim's advise and went ahead and replaced the whole roof. Jim was always in touch and very good about communicating. I have recommend him to others and I would use him in the future.

It's going great! Our room addition is all closed in and about ready for the inside work. Jim listened to me from the "get go" about what my vision for the room was and made great suggestions. They did the job in one day. A supervisor came out afterwards to check the job. The owner contacted me with an additional follow up after the first storm to see how the window turned out. This was my first time using their services and I was very impressed. I would recommend them to others and would use them in the future.

I am the property manager of this property. I am submitting this only because Angies list asked if we had ever used this company. My experience is as follows: <br /> I told Jim in early October, that there were two ceiling leaks at the property at two different locations of the house. He met me at the house was very friendly and determined the leaks could be stopped by applying Chimney saver to seal the bricks. I got the estimate on October 26 and submitted it to the owner who approved it on November 11...I sent the approval to the company the same day. I sent emails to Jim Hicks Home Improvement on the following days asking for someone to communicate with me about scheduling the job: 11/18/11, 12/13/11, 12/20/11& 12/27/11. All the while, the leaks are still leaking! I finally got a reply email from a Jim Hicks employee on January 10 stating that the rain the last couple of days was keeping them from waterproffing the brick. The same gentleman sent me an email on Feb. 3 stating that the work had finally been completed and asking if we needed an official invoice. I replied, Yes, we need an invoice. After a week, we still had not gotten an invoice so I had to email their company again. Finally, on February 17th someone from their office sent me an invoice for $425 which our bookkeeper paid promptly on February 21st. Three days later, I get another email stating that they had gotten our payment but the correct amount owed was for $475.00. I could not believe after all their delays, non-communications and then incorrect invoice that they would dare to even ask for an additional $50.00! <br /> On an up-note...we have not had any more leaks reported to date, so the sealent apparently worked. Good product, good application, bad everything else. I have over 150 houses to manage and I don't have time to babysit our suppliers. <br />

<br /> <br /> Within three days of requesting quote, I had a meeting, quote, and contract presented. Work was to begin within 3 to 5 days, however, I had to call to initiate and the work started on March 6th for the roof and the entire project including gutters was completed on March 14. <br /> The only problem was with the start date and the gutters took longer than expected because of incorrect measurements and the laborers had to return 2 days after beginning to install remainder. <br /> The roofer and the gutter installers were professional, cleaned up after work. Jim Hicks answered all my questions, explained what was to be done and my options. I felt very comfortable working with him and would call again and recommend to others.
