JMS Masonry & Restoration

Had a great initial experience but the repair on the stairs cracked again only a couple months after the repair. Despite a promised 3-year warranty, we can't get him to come back and fix them. He won't respond to texts or calls. Very disappointed after the initial positive experience and won't be calling him again to quote on more brick repair work that's needed.

They were great. I initially asked for a quote in the fall for some masonry pointing work on our foundation, but had delayed the work until the spring since it was a shared area of our townhouse. When we were finally ready to go, they contacted me right away and got right to work on a good weather day coming out of the winter. Great work, very professional and the cost was very reasonable. I’d use them again for sure!

Very well, John did a GREAT job on the masonry -- the stairs are gorgeous. He was very responsive to phone calls -- flexible and very pleasant to work with. There were a few bumps -- as in any project -- but we worked everything out with good cheer. I would highly recommend them for masonry work

Considering the scope and cost of this project, I spoke to four different masons to get their opinions and bids. In the end, John Screen stood out the best fit for the job, by far. He and his team were extremely experienced, professional, and punctual -- and they did an incredible job. They identified each of the headers and sills that needed replacing and carefully removed them, and poured and installed brand-new ones. They then tackled the front portico, which was a big concern for me -- the portico has some beautiful detail work, but one corner of it had completely fallen away. Frankly, I didn't think anyone could repair it in a way that wouldn't *look* like a repair. Yet, John rebuilt the missing corner, carving the matching detail by hand, and it looks as good as new with no signs of its past damage. Finally, the team painted all of the headers and sills (both new and old), the portico, and the decorative concrete "chair rail" that runs across the building with a special paint to protect the concrete and give the building a very cohesive look. They also took the time to repaint the wooden overhang at the very top of the building. What's more, even though this was not in their scope of work, they made some small repairs to brickwork on the back of the building where we had some contractors building a new porch, and spent a few days shoring-up some structural issues they noticed in the back, as well. The whole time, John was always in communication about what was going on and how the job was proceeding. If I had any questions, he was always a call or text away. In the end, the job looks fantastic and they stayed right within budget and right on schedule. With any luck, we won't need much masonry work for a while, but if we do, I will absolutely be calling John.

John and Kevin were extremely professional, capable, trustworthy and fair. It is clear that they take care in their work and have the proper training to make sure the job is done appropriately and thoroughly, a rare yet highly appreciated quality. They worked efficiently, and performed quality control inspections throughout the job and upon completion, including a full walkthrough to go over all of the details with me. I found communication very easy and flexible using both email and text to go through job specs. The estimate and completion of the job were in alignment and were not met with any surprises. I am a tough customer and they surpassed my expectations. I will use them for all our applicable repair needs in the future and would highly recommend their services.

I had reached out to JMS (formerly J&MA) in July about doing some masonry repairs to the foundation in the back of my house (old fieldstone piling were the masonry was crumbling between the stones in spots). I had held off on the work because of some unrelated issues and after the winter weather this season I knew I needed to address the issue. I reached back out to JMS and they called me back the same day and took another look at the issues and were able to do the work the very next day during an unseasonably warm break in temperature. I couldn't have been happier with the quality of the work and the response time/scheduling was more than I could have ever hoped for. I'd highly recommend them to anyone who needs masonry work done!

John and Kevin were great on price and did everything on time. Very good work and took the time to explain all the details.

After getting quotes from three different contractors, we chose John based his level of knowledge and communication as well as a very strong personal recommendation. The work was done quickly and with care and the end result was everything I could have hoped for. After he was done on the outside, we asked him to take a look as the inside of the basement (stone and mortar) which was also suffering from years of neglect. The HOA didn't have the money to re-point the lower/inner foundation immediately but John assured us that it would be fine for a couple years. He even came back the next week to quickly fill a few of the more major cracks free of charge just to make sure it wouldn't move before we could schedule the rest of the work. Throughout the process, John was easy to get in touch with and was excellent at communicating what was going to happen and when. We will definitely be calling him again to finish the basement and I wouldn't hesitate to give him my full recommendation.

JMS was very responsive when we reached out. The workers completed the work a lot faster than I thought and did an excellent job. I have already referred them to clients and family.

John and his team surpassed all expectations. They arrived everyday on time and if weather was an issue they contacted us to make sure we knew the situation. They finished the work faster than expected and took time to show me and the other condo owners what had been done and why. John held our hand and helped us formulate a plan to make sure our building stays in good order. John allowed us to stay within budget by explaining what needed to be done first and why. We will be working with John again the next time we have a need. Most importantly John did exactly what he said he would. True Class Act!

Our experience with John and his crew was excellent. He responded quickly to my request for quote inspecting the job site, quickly turning around a competitive quote. He worked with me to schedule a job start date and executed the job quickly and efficiently working around significant Spring rain days. His site crew was responsive and professional. Some added job scope was bid quickly and at a very reasonable cost and was seamlessly tacked onto the original scope. Job site cleanup was excellent and my fellow unit owners and I are pleased with the entire effort and have recommended John's company to multiple friends and neighbors.

John was extremely responsive throughout the process. He worked around my schedule to give a proper quote and after the job was done to walk through everything. He provided multiple quotes for different levels of work which was really helpful as well. The work was on the interior of the basement so I told him cosmetics were not paramount, but him and the team made it look great anyway. We are considering more masonry work for our association and will definitely be including J&M as an option.

I would like to thank John and his crew for the amazing job they done building our exposed kitchen brick wall and the laying of balcony patio. I was so happy the job was completed before the scheduled time. It allowed us to prepare for my partners college graduation party and use the patio to the full extent.

Had great initial experience but a measument for stair blue stone was installed incorrectly. Can't get them to come back out and fix. Won't return calls.

Exceptional.Martin and his assistant did an incredible job on my steps. They look brand new now. This was a Great experience dealing with Martin. Very professional/Did the work when promised and the price was extremely reasonable. I will hire Martin for all future masonry jobs.Thank You.

John was amazing! He educated us on the work that needed to be done, worked out an itemized proposal with the breakdown of each expense and did the work before the proposed deadline. John was very communicative with updates on the progress. The price was very competitive, compared to the other quotes we received. We are VERY happy with the work done and will be calling John again for any work needed. In addition, we'll be recommending him to friends.

John and his team were so fantastic. I had work done to my outside steps and the restoration quality was flawless. John was courteous, informative, punctual, and responsive every step of the way. I have already recommended John to family and friends and wouldn't hesitate to hire again if needed. True quality craftsmanship.

I was getting pretty nervous about the wall caving in with the construction of a new building that was about to go up next door. John was very responsive, and came out quickly. He immediately put heavy beams up to secure the building before he started the masonry part of the job. This gave us peace of mind. During the course of the job, John was great with giving me updates and sending me pictures on what was going on. I couldn't be on site very much but he kept me in the loop on everything that was happening. These guys were great to deal with, John obviously has been doing this for a very long time and takes pride in his work. The finished product came out great and I will be hiring J&M again for jobs going forward.

The work took longer than expected due to the weather not cooperating. The posted pictures are from the company, and it highlighted the constant weather issues while the work was ongoing. Several of the steps were rebuilt completely, and many of the bricks were replaced due to cracks. The finished brickwork looks great, and I expect the stairs to hold up very well during the winter. In addition to the repointing and the stair rebuild, the holes where the railings meet the stairs were filled in with a water sealing material and the inlaid stone landings were re-cemented. I would hire them again for other work, as they were professional, cleaned up after themselves and made the steps weather ready.

John Screen was a great pleasure to work with. He was quick to respond to calls, to provide an estimate and to keep us informed of progress and schedule. No surprises. He has associates in other trades such as painting and carpentry whom we expect to contact in hopes that they are as effective and great to work with as John

<p>If I had to use one word to describe Sean and Martin, it would be "craftsmen".  Unlike other people who have bid for my masonry business, they are not supervisors who hire semi-skilled individuals to do the manual work and then give them instructions as to how to proceed.  They are young and energetic, they do the work themselves, and they know what they are doing.  </p> <p><br /></p> <p>Sean and Martin are craftsmen who do the work themselves.  My home is over 70 years old.  Its brick cannot be replaced with an exact match.  I can see a number of patches with the wrong brick on my neighbor's house.  Mismatched brick shows.  My job was not simple - replacing the brick under a window that had buckled out due to corroded metal under them.  Every other vendor, when asked, said either "we don't do that" or cautioned that they might break some of the bricks in removing them, and that, if bricks were broken they would match the bricks "as best they could".  From experience, I knew the bricks could not be matched since that type of brick is no longer made.  Sean's reaction was straightforward:  No problem, we won't break any bricks.  And he didn't.  His work is careful and professional.  He knows his craft.  The cement he used to put the bricks back was colored to match the cement used on the old bricks.  Not a minor point.  At my neighbor's house, workmen were less careful.  Repairs stand out because even if the brick was a close match, the cement was not.  </p> <p><br /></p> <p>Sean learned the craft of masonry at his father's knee, so to speak, and he knows what he is doing.  He and his team work clean and to date have always been entirely reliable.  </p> <p><br /></p> <p>Because they do the work themselves, and do it right the first time, their prices have been reasonable.  They certainly don't give away their services, but there aren't two layers of people to pay - the "boss" who prices the work and the workers who actually do the job.  Of course, that doesn't mean that jobs don't need to be bod with more than one vendor.  Any vendor can give an "off" bid for a particular job.  </p> <p><br /></p> <p>Thus far, I have used J M A Masonry on three jobs and have been pleased each time.  An older house is in constant need of updating, and I plan to use them again in the future.     </p>

It went really well. We had a deadline we had to meet and all the work got done on time. The job was performed very professionally and John and his crew couldn't have been nicer. Everyone involved was extremely satisfied.
