Several doors of the cabinets are lopsided because furniture maker over cut the holes for where the hinges hang. Also over cut opening for electrical outlet; was not careful in overall workmanship. Unfortunate that workmanship was hasty. I can not recommend this furniture maker.
Response from JOHN'S FURNITURE & CABINETS
"Hmmmm, this is an interesting review. This job was bult and completed in 2012 not 2016. Unfortunately, the home owner hired people to do the electrical, sheet rocking etc that were not licensed with the State of California. Because the home owner tried to cut corners the ceiling and floor were out of level. We installed the cabinetry square, level and true. As we were doing the installation, I called the home owner in and explained and showed her how out of square the kitchen was. I explained to her and showed her with a level that the cabinetry was level and square. There was a significant taper to the ceiling and floor. Because of that the crown molding couldn't be scribed to the ceiling. The kick reveal had the same problem. I suggested along with my helper who is a general contractor that the floor could be and should have been leveled out before installation. Nathan my helper explained how that could be done and the same with the ceiling. Nathan also pointed out that the new wiring that had been done that ran from the panel to the kitchen was not at code. Also, the person doing the wire had drilled large holes in the ceiling rafters thus weakening them significantly and that by doing so the wiring in the ceiling/rafter area was not at code. Regarding the doors be lopsided because I over cut the holes is incorrect. It is not possible to over cut the holes for Euro Style Blum hinges. The holes are drilled using a 32 mm bit. The holes are drilled 3mm to 5mm from the edge of the door depending on the hinges used. I use the most expensive hinges available. They are Blum inserta hinges and hinge plates that have a 3 way adjustment. I explained this to her when I was giving her a quote and then when the cabinetry was installed showed her the hinges and how to adjust them if they ever got out of square. The same thing occurred with the drawer slides. I showed her how to take the drawers out and how to reinstall them. Also adjusting if there was ever a need. We did over cut one electrical out let above the stove in the hood cabinet. This occurred before I realized that the ceiling and floor where so out of level and square. I should have check first. We purchased and left an oversize cover plate to cover the hole. We showed her how it worked and that it did cover the oversize cut. She was satisfied with the explanation and the purchase of the cover plate. After we completed the installation I spoke with the home owner and we went over the cabinetry inside and out. She had a few questions which I answered. The home owner was satisfied with the cabinetry and installation and she paid me the balance in full which was several thousands of dollars. When I left she was satisfied. This is the first time I have heard from her in 4 years. My email and phone number have been the same for over 15 years and there was absolutely no attempt by the home owner to contact me, my bond company, insurance company or the State of California Contractors Lic. Board. I find it quite odd that there was no attempt to contact me or anyone else and that the review was written four years after the fact. My helper who is a lic. general contractor can also be contacted and verify the above statement. I have 25 other reviews that are all A reviews."

I had commissioned work from John before so I knew the high quality of his work. He helped me design the pieces - he has a good eye for proportion and detail. All the pieces are beautiful as well as very functional. <br />

<p>I saw examples of John's Custom Furniture and Cabinets at the 2014 Sonoma County Home and Garden Show. My husband and I were immediately struck by the quality of John's work. John is a true craftsman and a perfectionist in every detail! In addition to his exceptional craftsmanship, John is a great listener. He "gets the picture" even when parts of the project were crudely sketched by yours truly on a cocktail napkin! He is very willing to spend as much time with his clients as needed . Finding such an artisan with this level of expertise who honors the budget and conducts himself with such high integrity is rare these days. We highly recommend John Shannon of John's Furniture and Cabinets!<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> </p>

This was one of the best contractor experiences I've ever had. John is a <br /> very experienced and talented woodworker and is a very likable person. <br /> We set an appointment for our first meeting/quote and about a week <br /> before, we received a call inviting us to a local home show to meet <br /> John, see his work and discuss our project. Unfortunately, we weren't <br /> able to attend, but the thought was very nice. <br /> When the day came for our first meeting, John asked pertinent questions to <br /> understand what we were looking for. We needed a number of functional, <br /> attractive units at a good price and as we walked around the house <br /> describing our needs, John made suggestions as to what would fit best. A <br /> number of times making money saving suggestions and options <br /> when we weren't certain what we wanted. <br /> Within days of our meeting he provided detailed drawings, a specific payment <br /> schedule and an anticipated delivery date. Throughout the entire <br /> process, he stayed in communication, which was very much appreciated. <br /> When John came to deliver and install our shelves, he and his crew were very <br /> professional. The shelves themselves are lovely and functional. The <br /> craftsmanship is evident and the units look like they've always been here. <br /> I couldn't recommend John more highly and couldn't be happier with the shelves he made for us. The quality of his work, his <br /> customer service and his ease of style are all exceptional.

I couldn't have asked for a better experience. John was incredibly responsive from the very beginning. He is a great communicator and very easy to work with. I had a laundry list of what I was looking for (and what I wasn't) and pointed out several challenges with the task at hand that needed to be addressed. He was very receptive to the information I provided and in return, asked a number of questions that gave me confidence he understood what I had in mind. He sent someone to measure the closet (Rick - also a great guy) and from there, he sent a sketch of what he had in mind, which was perfect. <br /> When it came time to install the doors, they were meticulous and spend extra time making sure everything was perfect. (We live in San Francisco so everything in our house is a little crooked which required some extra effort to address.) The closet doors are perfect! My husband and I couldn't be happier with the final product. The process from start to finish was easy and seamless. I am already planning on working with John again on another project - a custom kitchen table! <br /> I highly recommend John's Furniture & Cabinets!

All in all it has gone extremely well. Like any major remodel, there were always a few hiccups, but John always agreed to a fair and economic solution. I can't say enough good things about John's integrity and professionalism. He's a master craftsman, the 11 ply Baltic Plywood construction is of the highest quality, finish and construction. John provides custom quality cabinets at prices that are equal or less than Big and small box store competition. His installation costs are also usually well below his competitors.. John can build fine furniture, not just kitchen cabinets, he's an excellent craftsman.

We hired John to construct and install a built-in media center for our living room. From the first meeting, we clearly knew we had the right craftsman for the job. He listened to our wants and offered his professional advice as to what would work for our project. He was very timely with submitting a detailed design and cost plan. Once we approved it, he immediately got to work, giving us regular updates on his progress - initially intending to have it completed and installed in 4 weeks. Unfortunately, he was sidelined for a bit due to personal reasons and a delay with another client, resulting in about a month's delay in the completion. So, although somewhat later than we had originally hoped, our custom furnishing was finally to be realized. And, needless to say, we were not disappointed. The attached picture will clearly show the quality of John's work - every detail addressed as we had originally discussed, and even added features that we ourselves had not thought of. He is a good, honest man who offers his services at a reasonable price. We are very pleased with the finished product and would definitely look to John for future project needs.

John was very professional and friendly. He responded promptly and came to measure and discuss our project with us right away. He built the units as modules in his workshop so installation only took a day. The finished products are outstanding quality both in terms of materials and workmanship. He even made special cutouts to maximize the storage space while still allowing power strips on the pull out shelves. The maple top of the desk/counter unit is gorgeous. I highly recommend this supplier.

We couldn't be happier with John's work. John's attention to detail is total, and the finished results look fantastic and function perfectly. Fit and finish is top-notch and the shelving unit in particular, has transformed the room in which is was built. Our painted cabinetry has a super-smooth piano gloss finish, only possible with repeated coats of spraying and sanding. All John's work is built very durably - almost overbuilt - and we fully expect it to last a lifetime. <br /> John is a master at combining and contrasting different woods into unique designs. Our family room combines maple cabinetry with bamboo countertops and chestnut accents. The results look original, sleek and coordinated. John handmade chestnut drawer pulls, when he couldn't locate ready made versions which matched our design ideas. <br /> Heartily and highly recommended.

John Shannon built a beautiful cherry wood media center for us. His workmanship is exquisite. I thought his price was very reasonable. He was also very easy to work with and responsive to any questions that I had.

I'd sent out a few quotes to build a customized pantry and kitchen island that matched our current cabinets. John was prompt in his response and was very clear and concise with his recommendations. His pricing was competitive with other quotes I received and I really liked the fact that he would be making the cabinet himself, not sourcing it out to another country to be shipped to us like some other vendors I spoke with. He also said that he'd provide us with a lifetime warranty as he was very confident in his workmanship and customer service which won me over. <br /> He also made time to tag on a visit to our condo which added to his customer service as I didn't have to bring him an example of the cabinets we had, he came to us! He was very friendly and made a good first impression. <br /> We decided to move forward with just the kitchen island for now and he delivered it last week and it's great! The drawers are reinforced and were hand-made to the best quality. Very detailed measurements and it matches our current cabinets almost exactly! I'm very happy with my investment and decision to work with John. <br />

The experience was good. <br /> As expected, kitchen remodels cause inconveniences and interruptions to normal routines. The work started on time, care was taken to protect the wood floors and island not being removed, the areas was always left clean at the end of the day and trashed hauled off as-soon-as demolition was completed. Nathan, John's recommended contractor was excellent. Nathan kept us informed of progress, was low keyed, and worked with John seamlessly. <br />

My wife and I recently had John build and install a custom made bookcase in our living room. It is about 8'x16' covering most of a wall. John had many great suggestions regarding the design and composition of the bookcase, delivered it on time and installed it. John gave us various detailed price options depending on the type and quantity of the wood used, and some other custom features we wanted. It is truly magnificent. We were kind of in a rush--we wanted it installed by Thanksgiving because we were having a dinner party at our house and John delivered beautifully. The bookcase was the hit of the party. My wife and I have numerous books which are large and heavy (my wife is a university lecturer) and our old house is not straight or level at all. Everything came together perfectly. The bookcase stands up to the weight of the books and is straight and level and the wood, mostly cherry, just looks wonderful. <br /> <br /> This is actually our second major order from John. About 6-8 years ago, we had John design, build and install a cabinet/pantry off our kitchen which had a very limited space and other configuration issues. It came out perfect. My wife says every time she looks at it she is as happy as the day it was installed. That was an outside-the-box job because of some strange ways our house was built but John delivered a perfect, beautiful product that makes maximum use of a very limited space. My wife is an expert cook who loves gadgets and stocking up on food items on sale, and we really needed extra space in our kitchen. We love showing it to first time visitors because everyone is amazed at the beauty, quality and usefulness. <br /> <br /> John makes furniture, too. Ask to see pictures of some of his work. He designed and built a stand-alone storage cabinet for our living room, which we love.

From the day John came by to give us a quote we found him to be extremely professional and personable. There were multiple samples to choose from and he was great about answering any questions we had. We had already had new granite installed and then decided we wanted to change the kitchen cabinetry so he was faced with quite a challenge on how to get the job done without damage to the counters. He more than met that challenge. John was here when he said he would be, he was extremely neat, patiently answered our questions, and did a fantastic job in both the kitchen and the laundry room. The job was completed on schedule and we couldn't be happier with the results. John is most definitely a true craftsman who loves and takes pride in what he does. We would not hesitate to recommend John's Furniture and Cabinets.

We were very pleased with John's ability to listen closely and respond to our desired outcomes for our kitchen. Moreover, he helped develop and refine many of those ideas and, in fact, was able in at least a couple of instances to make very valuable suggestions to our contractor about related lighting issues. John was timely, cooperative, efficient, and consistently friendly. Woods were very clearly selected with care, wood finishes were of the highest quality, and John willingly returned to the job when we asked him to address a couple of minor glitches. Hardware used in the cabinetry was heavy duty (as the contractor volunteered with admiration). We felt we received a product not only of the highest quality, but a product of the highest value. We continue to receive many admiring comments about the cabinetry- and the custom-built table- from our neighbors and guests.

John's work is amazing! We hired him recently to build a window seat into the bay windows in our living room. He was a joy to work with, he was fabulously easy to communicate with, and the end product was much better then we imagined. He also looked around our home at the moldings, and designed it in such a way that the face echoes other design features. His work is really top quality - I would recommend him to anyone.

Found John through his web site and asked him to provide me a quote. Though he lives/works 4 hrs away, works frequently in the Marin area and stopped by to take a look and provide a quote. I was a bit leery because his quote was much lower than others I had received locally. After looking at samples of his work and speaking with his references we decided to work with John. We couldn't have asked for a much more pleasant experience. John was very accommodating during the whole process. Prior to ever signing a contract, he probably put in 3-4 hours of his time between meeting with us, changing design/drawings, etc; not once pressuring us to commit. After we had signed a contract, and prior to his beginning the work, we wound up moving from that house. John had no problem working with us to apply our down payment to cabinetry in the new house. Again, after many more meetings and design changes we finally settled on the work we had done. When the cabinets were finally ready for install, John and his co-worker Eric were very professional. We had a newborn in the house and they were very sensitive to avoid problems with both dust and noise. My floor is far from level, and they did a great job keeping the cabinets level while fooling the eye with creative solutions so that the room slant wasn't too apparent. There was a slight fit problem with the countertop of one of the base cabinets, but John promised and delivered a new top within a week, all on his own dime. Considering he was coming from 4 hrs away, I found that to be tremendous customer service. A number of months after the installation, John stopped by when he was in the area to tell me that there's been a small detail in the way he scribed the cabinets to the wall (to accommodate the non-level wall) that's been bugging him and would we mind if he replaced the piece. Just another example of his dedication to his work and his desire to make sure his customers are completely satisfied. We definitely plan on working with John again in the future.

Our kitchen remodel was for a business located in a high rise building in downtown San Francisco. It was important to have the kitchen cabinets installed over a weekend so staff could have their kitchen up and running Monday morning. John came out to our office twice. Once to measure the kitchen and the second time to meet with the plumber, electrician & painter so that all the work could be coordinated and cabinets installed in the allotted time, which was 3 days. He delivered the cabinets on a Friday evening, demolished the old cabinets and installed the new cabinets and was finished ahead of schedule on Saturday afternoon. We are very pleased with our kitchen. The quality and workmanship is excellent and his price was very fair. I find him to be very conscientious and easy to work with. During the whole process John always communicated with us and returned phones calls promptly.

We are extremely happy with the finished work and in fact, John is doing some additional projects for us. John was very helpful in the design process, although I had a general idea of what I wanted there were lots of details to be decided. John visited our home once prior to installation to take measurements and after that we worked very easily via email and fax. The installation process was really rather remarkable. John (and a colleague) arrived with the pieces to be installed and all the equipment needed for the installation. He set up "shop" in a portion of my garage and the installation proceeded without a hitch.

Dec 2006
John's work proceeded without a hitch from start to finish; a welcome development given the problems that developed elsewhere in our full kitchen remodel. He offered design choices specific to our home and interior decoration schemes. He provided a good deal of guidance in those areas about which we were uncertain, often asking questions which led us to more satisfactory resolutions. He responded quickly and productively to any concerns we had about any aspects of the work, always providing as much feedback as we requested. Woods and the finish were of the highest quality, and took into account specific characteristics of the woods. Phone and e-mails were answered promptly and completely. John took pride in attending to all details of his work, wanted it to be special. Work was done on time, and the job site was always left very clean. In sum, John took responsibility for ensuring that we were completely satisfied and enormously delighted, with all aspects of his work.
