Paul Johnson made a positive first impression by returning our initial Friday PM voicemail by calling us the following day, Saturday. He showed up on time to examine our system and then provided an estimate with several options. Ultimately, we requested a specific brand and Paul was very accommodating in getting us exactly what we wanted at a very fair price. We had some additional questions before making a final decision and scheduled an appointment for late on a Friday afternoon. He called shortly before he was due to arrive to let us know he was tied up on a service call and apologized that he would be later than expected. Although the repair was at a location more than 40 miles away from our home, he said he would come as soon as he was finished or, as an alternative, he could come see us on Saturday. Preferring to see him that evening, he happily drove up to meet with us that night.

Paul and his staff are seasoned technicians who take pride in their work. Their professionalism was further evidenced when we had a HERS test done on the HVAC system. This test is performed by a licensed independent third party to verify that the Installation meets very specific California Energy Efficiency Standards. Our installation not only met, but far exceeded, those standards. When I told the inspector the installation was done by Johnson Air, he said he wasn't surprised we had such excellent test results.

We highly recommend Johnson Air Mechanical and they will be the only HVAC team we will call on in the future!
I received bids from four contractors before discovering Johnson Air. Johnson Air was recommended to me by a well-respected plumbing/heating company that didn't serve this far into North County (North Escondido).
The owner, Paul, arrived at the appointed time and investigated our existing two systems and related ductwork. Our home is about 3400 sq.ft. We needed the ductwork to be completely redone. He delivered his estimate according to when he promised. We found the pricing to be competitive.
One unique thing Paul offered was access to "slimline" units made by Carrier that occupy the same footprint as our old units. We had looked at Trane and Lennox as well, but did not want the "missile silo" effect in the highly visible spots the units would occupy in our yard.
Contract was signed after Paul did some additional calculations for me based on various options. Job was quickly scheduled. Due to the extensive nature of the work, I asked to have one unit installed one week and the second the following week, which they kindly accommodated.
We really appreciated the efforts and work-ethic of our two installers Hector and Eric. (Amazing guys!) They worked with us on making some minor modifications (my husband always comes up with something mid-project!). Eric worked like a bull-dog over several days in unbelievable attic heat getting all our ductwork in place. Hector focused on installing the hardware and wiring.
We also were well looked after by the folks in the front office. They answered any number of questions I threw at them.
Job was completed on-time. And they left us confident that if anything popped up, they'd get back to us quickly. Paul patiently answered several follow-up phone calls I made.
Bottom line for us is that we will look to Johnson Air for our future needs. They earned our business and then earned our respect.

Another AC provider told me that I needed to replace my AC. I got a quote from a few contractors. Johnson Air was my choice to replace my system. They had the best price and were absolutely the most transparent with their quote. I had a mix up and had to delay my install. In the meantime, I had Paul look into my system and he was able to repair it for $500. He saved me thousands and thousands of dollars. I found them to be honest, quick to communicate and flexible. I recommend you stop looking at all the reviews and give them a call. These are the people you want to call.
Johnson Air is amazing. I have family in the construction business and am hard to impress. This company is superb from their responsiveness on the phone, bidding, workman, efficiency, and thoroughness. Every representative of the company was polite and went the extra mile on every aspect of the job. The installation team was incredible. They worked quietly and efficiently, and were exceptionally courteous. They arrived on time, and thoroughly cleaned and secured the work area at the end of each work day.
For this job, I obtained 4 bids. The companies I chose were vetted by the general contractor in the family. Johnson's Air's pricing was actually the lowest of the 4. The job was complex and Johnson Air designed the best system to address the unique needs of the installation.
I highly recommend Johnson Air Mechanical.
They were very good. I called some other people but they had the lowest price. They were busy and they could not come until the following week. They kept their word and they came when they said they would in the morning. I would recommend them.

Our thermostat suddenly stopped working recently. My husband is handy and evaluated all the normal things, but couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. I wanted to call a company close to my home in Encinitas, and found Johnson Air Mechanical on Angie's List. The office staff was helpful and scheduled a time that was convenient for us for Paul to look at the thermostat/HVAC system. He came to our house at the arranged time and was friendly and professional, and he was quickly able to diagnose the problem. I will recommend him to friends and we will call him the next time we need anything related to HVAC. Thank you, Paul!
Had a problem with the blower not shutting off after the furnace hit the desired temp. Johnson was able to diagnose the problem immediately and went out of his way to pick up the part and install it the next day. Previous HVAC personnel could not fix it after two visits. Strongly recommend Johnson.

I have been putting off this major expense because I was uncertain what would be the correct new system for my home. I had four different heating and air conditioning companies come to my home, access my current equipment, make recommendations, and provide estimates for new equipment.
Now I'm not in the habit of writing reviews, after all I type six words a minute. As I researched my options to change my furnace and air conditioning equipment I found a diverse set of perspectives from the contractors who visited my home, from a recommendation from one contractor to "do nothing and when you sell the house give the next owner an accommodation for the furnace and air conditioner not working". Pass on that idea. To suggestions to relocate the condenser to a different location and to dig up my yard which would have cost 2X what I was charged buy Johnson Air.
Paul provided a comprehensive written proposal for work within 24 hours of visiting our home. Once we accepted the proposal, Paul's office scheduled a date for the work to be initiated which was less than a week out, and this was during a heat wave, so a week sounded very responsive. I was not sure how long I'd have his crew at our home, removing the old eqipment and installing the new gear but my expectation was a couple of days. Not so ! Johnson Air came promptly at 8:00 AM worked through the day and left before 5:00PM.
During the installation they were professional, put down the necessary protection to care for our floors, explained each step of the work to me as it was done as I wanted to be sure I understood what they were doing, and any discuss any issues that arose. They fixed issues/problems that were discoverd during installation, and made suggestions to maximize our new investments.
I am thrilled with the outcome provided by Johnson Air, they left the work area totally cleaned up picking up every little paper and scrap that was created during installation. My new equipment works better than my old gear did even on its best day, and Paul has some ideas on ways we can further improve on the air conditioning for our home. I recommend Johnson Air to anyone who is in need of an honest, high quality heating and air conditioning service for your home needs.
Kind regards
Gary Arnold
The initial installation was on Sept 12th and it required an entire day. My tenant was not available for the first part of the day, so I met owner Paul Johnson at the location at 9:00 am. Paul Johnson was the person to receive the Rheem A/C unit from the manufacturer, first thing that morning. Shortly thereafter, two additional Johnson Air employees arrived. The approximate 200 lb. unit needed to be placed on a second floor patio. Instead of doing that with a "hijack," the three employees muscled it up a narrow flight of stairs, damaging the walls along the way. Paul repaired the walls with putty and paint, but I would have preferred to not have it damaged in the first place. That should have been my first clue about the kind of work I should expect. I left the property about five hours later, after my tenant arrived home from work. This was on a Thursday. The following day, Friday evening, I received a call from Paul's wife, Dianne Johnson. She said the manufacturer, Rheem, delivered the wrong A/C unit and that that unit would have to be disconnected and a replacement unit would need to be installed on the upcoming Monday (Sept 16th). This would require an additional day of either my time or my tenant's time. My tenant was able to sit through another day for the A/C unit switch out. This was on Monday the 16th. On Tuesday morning, I received an alarming email from my tenant, stating that there was a leak under the bathroom sink at the rate of about "a gallon in less than an hour." I immediately called Johnson Air, and I left not one, not two, but three messages for Dianne Johnson. I finally made contact with her on the fourth call, but instead of calling me back she emailed me. She was already aware of the problem and quickly blamed the builder. This is when I became inpatient and upset. Instead of listening to me, Dianne was intent on blaming the builder for the problem. So, I am the customer and I am now listening to the owner #1) blame the manufacturer for delivering the wrong unit, and #2) blame the builder for not connecting the condensate drain. I asked her in a straight forward manner, so tell me Dianne, when does Johnson Air take some responsibility here? She screamed at me over the phone, talking "over" me and "at" me, never once taking any responsibility for this debacle. To add insult to injury, I received a self-righteous, holier-than-thou email from Paul Johnson, stating that they have done all they can do to satisfy me and that my "commitment to perfection" was something they were not going to be able to achieve. He also had the nerve to state that I treated his wife badly and he blocked my email address, so that I could no longer communicate with them by email. Both Paul and Dianne have emailed me to "keep the money" for the job and stated that "they don't want it." I sent Paul an email (from a different email address) this morning advising him of the fact that, regardless of whether or not they choose to receive payment from me, that I am entitled to the following information: 1) has the a/c problem been corrected, 2) will the a/c operate without damaging my property, 3) has he taken care of the permit requirement, and 4) where is the paperwork for the manufacturer warranty. Paul emailed back to me that the problem has been corrected and there is no damage to my property. He emailed a copy of the warranty and said he would be taking care of pulling the permit and meeting the inspector. This was and is the first and last recommendation I will use from Angie's List. If this is the kind of company I can expect to do business with, I would be better off going to the yellow pages and using eeney-meeney-miney-mo. In summary, I have the following questions about this company's experience and knowledge. 1) Why was a walk through necessary before the installation if they were not checking to see what kind of unit the existing equipment would be compatible with. Paul stated that my existing equipment was not compatible with the first unit they installed. If that is true, then are they not experienced enough to know that BEFORE they install it? 2) Why would they not check to see if the condensate drain was connected before they leave the job site? They said the builder did not connect the drain. If that is true, than to a layman like myself, I would think there are thousands of builders. Not each and every one will leave an unused drain like they describe, connected. If this is not within their scope of final inspection, it certainly should be. After all is said and done, I am going to hire an independent a/c company (one that I trust) to inspect the work done by Johnson Air. Needless to say, I am not impressed, and I am certainly not satisfied.
Response from Johnson Air Mechanical Inc
"We have been affiliated with Angie’s List for several years and have always seemed to attract wonderful and grateful consumers who appreciate a hard working honest contractor. In this case (Member name removed) was an exception, a person we failed to please and for that we apologize.(Member name removed) is correct in the fact that we initially installed the incorrect unit into her investment condo. The wrong tonnage of unit was delivered, and we installed this delivery. We apologized profusely and concurred we could have done a more in depth inspection of the unit upon its arrival to avoid this from happening. 14 years in business and we have never had a delivery mix up like this, so we took it for granted that it was correct and followed through with installation. I explained this to (Member name removed) over the phone and apologized again and let her know that due to this experience we have incorporated and trained our staff on a new process to inspect/verify equipment upon delivery to insure this doesn’t happen again. We returned and installed the correct size unit – yes there was an issue with her existing plumbing and we repaired that for her as well at no charge and even replaced her old thermostat with a brand new one. (Member name removed) has received a brand new Rheem Air Conditioning unit with a matching coil that is honored by factory warranty that works perfectly, and has passed city inspection. A job totally over $3,500.00 for FREE and she is still unhappy and dissatisfied. I don’t know how many times we can apologize for an honest mistake and how we can compensate better than FREE of charge in an attempt to make (Member name removed) happy. I honestly wish (Member name removed) peace, harmony, & happiness Dianne Johnson Johnson Air"

Johnson Air Mechanical is by far the best, most honest, most professional heating and air conditioning company certainly in San Diego and maybe in all of California. We have had the pleasure of working with Paul Johnson twice. The first time was a year ago when I called him because my parent's (who are in their 90's) central air conditioning did not work. Paul came out several separate times, at my parent's request, to assess their situation and give them estimates. He was eternally kind and patient with them and ultimately installed a new central air conditioning system in their home for half the cost of all the other estimates. He then had to return several more times to help them to understand how to manage the thermostat, even once leaving his family at the beach on a Sunday to come to help my parents, always with a smile and within a very short time after they called.
Our second time was today. The central heating system in our home just stopped working. We called Paul and he immediately made an appointment with us, showed up right on time and "fixed" our heating system with a paper clip. The thermostat had frozen and he reset it. Then he examined the heater itself, replaced the filter with a new washable one and when we asked for the bill, he said there was no cost. Mind you, he came to our home (a service call), he inspected the heating system, he replaced the filter (with one of his own), he reset the thermostat and he explained and programmed it.
Paul's dedication to honest work and personal service is so unusual today. I very rarely recommend a contractor with the 100% certainty with which I recommend Paul Johnson. You will be thrilled with the high quality of his work and knowledge, his honesty, his professionalism and his price.
Paul was very professional. He came to my home and subsequently sent me a quote along with references and copies of license and insurance. He had the best price so I scheduled the installation. He arrived on the scheduled day and time. The installation went smoothly. Paul always responded to my e mails and phone calls promptly and answered all my questions. He will return this summer to make sure the system is working well.
Late one cold December night, an electrical burning odor wafted through the house as our gas furnace shut itself down. We called Johnson Air Mechanical the next morning and spoke with Dianne, who juggled the day's schedule to squeeze in a service call to our house. Paul Johnson showed up early that afternoon, and (after running a few tests) diagnosed the problem as a "shorted or open" run capacitor. He quickly replaced the malfunctioning capacitor and tested the furnace again to confirm that the problem had been solved.

Excellent. Not only is Paul knowledgeable, he is a really great guy. Many times these two qualities don't go hand in hand. Highly recommended.
Our Situation: We bought a house a couple of years ago and inherited a 15-20 yr old HVAC system. System itself works fine, no complaints. Except our flex duct work in the attic was quite old and in several spots, the plastic wrap around the insulation was literally shredding and peeling off the tubing. This impacted air delivery temps from room to room. There were also some crushed ducts from stepping on them (tight attic.)There were also some big unsealed gaps in the plenum which results in attic air being pushed into the living space.
Initial Meeting: I called Paul for a consultation (actually emailed Dianne :)). He showed up on time and was very courteous. We had briefly discussed some of the issues we were having based on my amateur observations. He took a look up there and spend a good amount of time.He had pointed out the issues as well as some others like our aging gas line which was not up to (today's) code.I knew after our discussion that he was the right guy for the job. He listened to not only our budget needs but also was someone that made sure when he did the work it was done right (sealing all the ducts etc.)He sent the proposal and all of his credentials within days of our meeting.
The work done: Per the quote, all work was done and done well (albeit during one of the hottest weeks of the year.) Both he and Hector did an outstanding job. How do I know? The results speak for themselves. The airflow going in and out of the system is strong and when I go into the attic, I dont hear any air leaks like I did before.Probably the nicest addition besides everything else, were the balancing dampers. There are some rooms which we rarely spend time in and others which are a bit bigger that we do (eg. living room.) Once I got up there and balanced the system to our needs, the comfort level is like night and day now between the old and new ductwork.
Other items of note: - I had to take care of some pop up business which ran right into our scheduled appts and he was totally accommodating. - Very professional and clean. Drop clothes were used where he was treading.- NEVER got the dreaded hard sales pitch about NEEDING a new system (which I got before from another proposal.) I am aware that due to the age of the system, at some point it may need replacing, but as for right now and our current needs, its just not a top priority (we live in San Diego after all.) When I relayed to Paul our actual usage and needs he agreed.
It could not have gone better. Paul and Hector were here when they said they would be, worked hard all day, came back the next day and worked until after 7pm. Paul came back today to replace the old registers and make sure the unit worked. Paul and Hector were pleasure to work with, did not complain, were polite and completely professional, and although the job was difficult, they did it successfully. I could not be happier. Paul is honest, personable, polite, respectful, and very responsive to any questions or concerns I had. I would use Johnson Air again (although I hope I won't need to), as I feel the quality of the work was extremely high, and he was such a pleasure to work with.
