Threshold started peeling off in 4 months or so. I was told there will be a warranty of one year. I have emailed him several times and keep on getting excuses.

They didn’t complete anything. Promises made, not kept. Workers were okay.

On October 19, 2015 John Farmer and I met, he looked over the work that needed to be done, and we signed a contract. I paid him 50% down. This was $130. The work was: replacing and painting a garage door flap, reinstalling a baseboard, pressure washing a deck, and touching up the deck (which he stained for us in 2014). He said he would start the work right away. On November 13 I contacted John to confirm that he hadn't forgotten about us, understanding that we'd had weather issues so there might be a delay. He said he'd contact me the following Monday to schedule. I heard nothing. I reached out again on December 4, and he said the weather was killing him but that he'd be over the following Tuesday to clean the deck and we'd go from there. He did not come. I reached out again on January 4 with a stern email where he apologized and again blamed the weather. On January 7 he came out to replace the garage door seal only. We were not home so he couldn't do the one interior piece of work (baseboard) but said he'd be out the next morning to power wash if it wasn't raining. It ended up raining so he didn't come out that morning, but then continued not to show up until I reached out again via email on January 29, not understanding why it was taking so long to complete an inside job (baseboard) when weather was not an issue. He replied on the 31st and said that the job was priced as a package so he was waiting until he could do the deck to do it all on one trip. He said he'd take care of it on Monday February 1, and then come back on the 5th to stain and do inside work. He didn't power wash, again because of the weather, but did come on the 5th to put my baseboard back in. I understand that we were in the coldest time of the year for powerwashing and deck staining (minimum of 50 degrees), so I stopped pestering him until my next email on March 18 when it had gotten warmer again. On March 21 he said it would be finished that week. On April 4 I wrote to him again because the work still wasn't finished. I told him the only reason I wasn't livid about his lack of job completion was the fact that I was having a problem with a groundhog and didn't want him tracking his muddy feet on a newly washed deck, so I asked John to consider the project on hold until the groundhog was caught. He said great, just let him know when and he'd get it done. It took a while to catch the groundhog but on June 3 I wrote to him again and said that he'd been caught and I was ready to resume work. John said that we're now in his busiest time but he'd work us in the week of June 13. I said that was fine. Then he said he come by on Father's Day the 19th and I said that was fine, but he still didn't show. I followed up with him and he said that there was another deck he was pressure washing on June 22 or 23 so he committed to doing ours afterwards. After following up with him again he said he was finishing the other deck on the 26th and would head our direction after that. He followed up with me after finishing the other deck and said that he was hot and dehydrated and he needed to go home to rest but that he'd be at my house at 8:00 on the 27th (power washer was still on the truck) to finish. I got home from work on the 27th and the work was not done. I sent him an email that evening asking what I needed to do in order to get him to finish this job. It has not rained here in weeks so he can no longer blame the weather. He said he slept most of the day because of the dehydration. Said he would do it Tuesday June 28. I emailed him on June 30 because it still wasn't done. Said he would do it in the next three days. I said I hoped he would. He sent me a very heated email asking if I cared that he didn't have a day off, and he told me that we were even with what I had paid, and I could find someone else to finish if I wanted to. I wrote back and said that we were not at all even, and he needed to finish the job, especially because the deck touch-ups were part of the warranty from the original deck staining that he did (a $4000 job in late 2014) and I was sick and tired of him telling me that he'd come out and then not showing up. I told him he could scroll back through all of our email correspondence and see how many times (as I've recounted here) he said he'd show and then did not. I asked him to finish the work within the week and told him that I didn't want to have to contact the BBB. That email exchange was over a month ago, and despite a claim filed with the BBB (to which he never responded so they closed the claim), nothing has been done.

On 1/2/2016 I paid John Farmer half the contracted price to begin work on a deck. He stated this was a good time for him to do the deck before his work started picking up again. He also said this was a "two weekend" job.

Before the work began I expressed concern regarding the quality of the wood at the big box store he uses. He assured me that he selects each piece of wood to insure quality and he uses only grade A wood. This job began with the setting of four 6x6 posts in cement. When I checked on the work for the day the first thing I saw was a 6x6 post with a hole through the middle and a split down the side. John insisted he would fill the hole and guarantee the post in writing. I should have had him dig up the post and the cement he set it in. By the way, I never got that guarantee in writing.

After the posts were set and a little framing was completed work came to a halt. Then a few boards were put down on the deck and the work halted again. The excuses started -- it's too wet, it's too cold, it's supposed to rain, my stepson got called in to work, I don't work on Mondays, I'm changing the oil in my truck. One time he texted that he couldn't show up as he had promised because he didn't have anyone to "watch his fire". It was winter so we didn't always have 75 degree weather with gentle winds blowing but I was able to get outside and do work so I would think the man who thought it was a good time to build a deck in January would have been able to come outside. After MANY weeks of my having to keep asking when the work would be complete, being told he would be there the next day and then not showing up, the deck build was finally completed. The "two weekend" deck has now taken 6 weeks and we haven't gotten to staining.

On February 28th John finally stained the deck. I wasn't there when he stained it and when I got home I was appalled. There were drips, brush smears, roller marks (see pics). In one text he said, "It will rain on it and by late this week it will look completely different." Needless to say neither, rain, sun nor time improved the appearance of a sloppy job of staining. He was very offended that I said that the application appeared sloppy to me. John has excuses for everything because nothing is his responsibility. In one text he said it was my fault for wanting semi-transparent stain because he likes to use solid stain. Finally he decided to call BEHR because he wanted them to pay him to redo the stain. Who knows what he said to them but supposedly they gave him $200 for the product to strip and redo the poor stain job.

During this time I noticed that the benches on the deck were very loose and they were not even being used. John seemed to think that was normal but he said he would put a bolt through one of the 2x4's that made up the legs of the bench. When I pointed out that the design of the bench legs appeared to be the problem he told me he was a "master carpenter" and he knew what to do. He put a carriage bolt in the bottom of one leg on each bench. Of course they still wobble just as much as ever. He then told me if I wanted anything else done to them I could do it myself because he was finished. He also refused to stand behind some work he had done at my other house. The re-staining of the deck improved the appearance - this is because he finally followed the directions on the can as to how to apply this stain. If he had taken the time to do it right the first time he could have saved us all a lot of trouble. On May 9th he quit the job. I can't say it was finished since I still have benches on the deck that will need to be redone by someone qualified to do the work. The two weekend deck - still needing work 5 months later.

I would STRONGLY recommend that you NOT use John Farmer. He can talk a pretty good game but he cannot live up to his promises. He keeps wanting money advanced to him and then doesn't show up to do the work. He has more excuses than anyone I have ever met. If you challenge or question him on anything he thinks he is being disrespected. He also kept telling me how he was doing me such a favor because he knocked off $1000. I never asked him to knock off anything nor did he ever say he had done so. I asked for his price and then agreed to pay it. No dickering happened. He never said he was doing me any favors with the price until I had issues with his work. The "I gave you a good deal" is his way of trying to rationalize his poor work and poor work ethic.

If you decide to use John Farmer - just remember you were warned.

Work started 11 months ago and never completed. Made numerous promises that were never met. Left a mess in back yard. Paint on windows never scraped. Numerous requests for draws and adders. Limited regular crew unable to meet contract scope. Did not return gallons of unused paint I provided. I am now searching for a contractor to finish the work.

Violent winds lifted a long section of ridge vent. Unnoticed until Friday evening and with heavy rain arriving Sunday evening I left messages with several roofing companies to come reattach the ridge vent immediately.

John was the only one to return my call that night. He said that he would try to come by Saturday but assured me that the vent would be reattached before the rain. John called Saturday afternoon to reschedule saying he’d be here by 8:00 AM.

Sunday morning about 7:30 we heard someone working on the roof. John reattached the ridge vent and walked the roof looking for other problem spots with the vent.

Response from John's Workshop LLC
"This customer was a wife and seperated husband which had very diffrent instructions for the projects. One would expect one thing and the husband would come by and change the instructions. She stopped the paint job before we could get started good. I let her out of that contract even thought I really didnt have to. Even given that they still owe me over $230 for completed work they never paid. I don't do work for deadbeats."

John did an excellent job! Very happy with the results. He replaced 6 rotting fascia or soffit boards where they connected to various areas of our upper roof. He offered advice and made repairs on a window in an dormer that we were sure we would have to replace. Looks like new and bought us a few more years without replacement. John gave us a price for 7 areas . He was honest enough to tell us one of the areas did not need repair. What appeared from the ground to be a hole was roof flashing. We weren't there when he was making the repairs and would have never known had he not told us. We added extra work after the quote (dormer window & gable vent) which took our total from $650 to $815. He checked with us prior to the work to make sure the additional cost was approved.
John gave us the best price and told us it would be 3 weeks before he could do the job and that could change depending on the weather. It was 7 weeks before he could get to us. It took 3 separate trips...a Thurs, Sat, and Sun. That said, we understood when we hired John that our job was a small and an inconvenient type of job. We have a two story house with an extremely steep roof. We KNEW that our job would not be large enough to meet a week's payroll and EXPECTED it to be worked in between larger jobs. The wait was worth it to us to get the quality of work done at such a reasonable price. The damage he repaired had been there for over a year, what's a few more weeks?
The only thing I would suggest to John is that he be a bit more proactive in keeping his customers apprised of his schedule. However, he always returned my text or call promptly.
We would definitely hire John again!

I renovate homes in charlotte and recently started work in Greenville.

Being new in town, I didn't have a network of go to contractors, but use angies list all the time so found John here and looked like the right fit. Im glad I did.

He has performed a wide variety of tasks, but went above and beyond on the floor install. I was planning on doing this part myself but got backed up and would have slowed down the overall project. John flexed his schedule and agreed to put the floors in.

Very high quality work and extremely reasonable price.

Over the years I've found there are two types of contractors. Ones that only care about the money in their pocket and the ones that care about their work and their customers as they know over the long term good customer relationships are key.

John is clearly in the latter. He does outstanding work, knows everything about everything re: home renovations/construction and doesn't gouge you when little unexpected details pop up that weren't covered in contract.

He also helped me source the materials which I bought myself which saved me money. Always looks for ways to get things done the right way but most cost effective method as well. (example. got quotes for $7.000+ to replace windows. When I told him I was replacing the windows, he helped me source the best window myself and he did the install. Saved me about $3,000 over the leading window installers in town)

I'd strongly recommend giving John a call for your project. You wont be disappointed

Pressure washing went well. Staining process was okay but much touch/up work was needed. The contractor never returned to finish, even after two phone calls. I had to do the touch-up work myself!

I would not use this contractor again nor would I recommend this company.

I am now hesitant to use Angie's List again!
Came on time, was careful inspected areas needing work. Main reason I choose John's Workshop was that he is the only contractor that came to the house and noticed missing piece of flashing that was causing water damage. Also helped decide which route to fix things with out being pushy like other contractors were. I would recommend to anyone else, positive reviews also carry as much weight as negative ones and you can trust John.
Called John to estabish a date and time to do the job. He arrived upon the agreed time and promptly proceeded to install the new faucet on to the new sink. He then removed the old sink and support plumbing fixtures. The installation of the new sink went smoothly except I had purchased inappropriate water supply lines that go from the shutoff valves to the faucets. John took it upon himself to go out to the hardware store and secure the proper supply lines. Once they were connected he tighten the sink down onto the counter top and finished the job.
in the faucet we later found a drip from the faucet. It apparently took some time to fill the faucet line before the leak showed. Called John who advised he would return the following morning. Again arrived as stated and quickly found the source which he quickly fixed. Job complete, wive happy!!!
We have used John's Workshop in the past. I am very particular regarding quality of work and cost. John has always met my needs and I have recommended him to many neighbors who have gone on and used his skilled service.
I was thankful I hired John. He diuscovered previous owner had installed a new bathroom floor over the old floor but had not raised the height of the toile flange so every time the toilet flushed some water leaked and rotted the sub-flooring. If I had gone with a licensed plumber and carpenter the bill would have easily been doubled or more.
