Jon never did the work, did not show up on the scheduled day and did not respond to my phone calls, though I had already paid him $425. This was especially unexpected because Jon had done work for me before so I felt there was a professional relationship there and some trust. I felt he was an honorable guy. But he nevertheless essentially robbed me.
Response from JP Carpentry & Handyman Services
"I apologize for the unintentional oversight. we were incredibly busy last summer , but I have found your address and have mailed out a refund check for $450. I apologize and Hope you will try my services again someday."

For starters, John replied to my messages within an hour throughout our interactions, and there were quite a few more than normal due to my mistake. He was so responsive that I got to checking for a reply within 10 minutes of sending it and there it was! Some of the other 4-5 handymen I reached out to replied after a day and some didn’t at all. Anyway he came the first time and we screwed up so he had wasted his time for this visit as we gave a wrong phone number and didn’t hear the doorbell. John was completely understanding and we re-scheduled for the next day! He took care of the job without any problem and was actually pleasant to have over as our guest during the time! He’s a very understanding, patient, kind and competent guy. So thankful!

John responded quickly and is very decently priced. His work on both projects was excellent, quick turnaround, and he is very professional. We will definitely be hiring him again for future projects.

I purchased a “deal” from Angie’s List but I cannot get this handyman company to schedule an appointment despite many emails and calls. And Angie’s List is refusing to refund my purchase. On top of that, Angie’s List keeps emailing me asking me to review this company. So here’s my review of both JP Carpentry and Angie’s List’s “deals”: they are terrible and I will never buy another one again. I will continue to pursue getting this appointment scheduled because otherwise I lose the $170 they have pocketed.

"Dear Angies list members, I do my very best for you all. I love what I do and do it well I'm passionate about providing top notch services for your home or business. Please understand that I am but one man I have no office with receptionist or other carpenters in the field, my responsiveness, punctuality, price etc should not be compared to the standard of a large corporation or company. It Maybe very hard to reach me at times, I may have to reschedule last-minute, please flexible and understanding if requesting my services. I understand that writing this may lose my business I'm OK with that I enjoy working for kind people. If you're looking for quick cheap fixes I may not be your guy. I believe in good honest work and it has done very well for me. I am a humble, kind old soul a true craftsmen looking to better the world one job at a time. Thank you Ms. [Member Name Removed] for your wonderful review."

John arrived a few minutes later than his appointment, but was otherwise top notch. He was professional, brought a helper along, and did beautiful trim work. He also cleaned up after himself which was greatly appreciated. I was hesitant to hire him based on some previous reviews on responsiveness, but John promptly called me to schedule my appointment, and was a pleasure to work with.

He over tightened the nut that connects the water hose to the back of the tank of the toilet he was hired to install. I woke up to a flood. There was an inch of water on my hardwood living and dining room/hall floors. I had to replace the entire floor. He was not responsive in giving me a receipt for the parts that he used, so my insurance company could not go forward with any claim. This caused me to get cancelled from my insurance after paying a $500 deductible. I had to sign up with a new insurance company because of the size of the claim, which costs me $600 more a year.
Response from JP Carpentry & Handyman Services
"This happened three years ago . I am so so so sorry I came same morning. It s unfortunate you have to pay more for insurance. I did every thing I could do to track down parts and paperwork. I worked very closely with your prior insurance company. They found me at no fault. Heres a copy of their email me to me John, Per our conversation this morning, we wish to advise you our investigation has indicated that the supply line failure is more directly attributed to the design of Fluidmaster line than the installation. As such we will be more directly pursuing the manufacturer at this time. David Trevvett, AINS Examiner II NYCM Insurance 1899 Central Plaza East Edmeston, NY 13335 Phone: (607) 965-2691. Since then I've only purchase toilet bowl lines that are engineered to stop any flood from ever occurring there a little bit more expensive but they're so much more worth itit's so unfortunate that sometimes these accidents happen and I'm happy that your insurance company was quick to cover all the repairs. I've been in business for over 12 years just have never happened to me and it was a dark day here in JP carpentry and handyman services. You were a good client we've done several jobs for you before the toilet accident. Really not much more to say super unfortunate and I really do appreciate your review and your patronage"

John installed a new kitchen sink an faucet on 10/31/15. I am a first time home owner and had bought the house the month before. I supplied the sink and the faucet. John had an associate come take pictures to determine what other parts he would need to pick up. John said he would have to get a drain pipe to attach to the underside of the sink. He said the original P-Trap pipe was still in good condition. On 3/2/16 I was washing dishes after work and suddenly there was a flood on the floor in front of the sink. I turned off the water and saw the P Trap pipe was no longer attached to the drain pipe under the sink. I called my son-in-law to help me. He thought the washer nut which attaches the drain pipe into the P Trap pipe must have come off. We pulled the towels up I had put down to dry up the water but there were no pieces that had come off. He said a washer and nut should have been installed to keep the pipes attached to each other but it appeared the drain pipe had been inserted into the end of the P Trap without anything to secure them together. I had just finished cooking a pot of pasta and needed to strain the water. My son-in-law reinserted the drain pipe back into the P Trap so I could strain the water from the pot. As soon as I slowly started pouring water into the colander in the sink, the P Trap popped off the drain pipe again. He put it back on and held it in place until I finished straining. Then he turned the water supply off under the sink. I called Angie's List and they told me I would need to fill out an online form to put in a claim on the quality guarantee. I went online the next morning to fill it our as I also had taken pictures to upload to the form. I read that I was required to contact the contractor first then wait 2 business days before submitting the form (this was Thursday).I called John at 9 am and left him a message. I didn't accuse him of anything, just said it appeared there was neither a nut or bracket installed to hold the pipes together. I told him I would text him pictures, which I did then I also followed up with a message along with pictures on Angie's List. By the afternoon I called and left another message saying I realize he's probably on another job, but would he at least call or text to let me know he got the message. I reminded him I'm without the use of the kitchen sink but I was holding off on following up with Angie's List until I heard from him. Still no response. Before I got home from work my son-in-law and his father went to see if they could temporarily fix the pipe connection until John corrected it. They had seen that the original washer and nut had never been replaced on the P-Trap end and that the drain pipe had just been forced into it with the old washer and nut still attached. They also found that there was no sealant used where he attached the new drain pipe to the underside of the sink and there was a very small amount of water leaking and also there was no sealant used under the drain rim that screws into the top of the drain in the basin. I had notice that the rim wasn't completely flush and food particles fall into the edges and I need to keep cleaning them out. John called me back on Friday morning. He sounded a bit annoyed and said he got my message and asked what happened. I told him then he said he would need me to send him pictures and text him my address. I told him I did text him pictures after I left my first message. He said he never got a text. I told him I also messaged him through Angie's List and attached the pictures to that message as well. He didn't say anything to that. I then told him that my son-in-law had tried fixing it temporarily and found that sealant hadn't been used to attach the drain pipe under the sink, nor where the drain rim is screwed into the bottom of the basin. He then said that now he saw he got the text and said he'd have to look at the pictures and call me back. After realizing John had made so many short cuts on this job and didn't bother to get back to me for a full day, or even offer an apology for the wait, I don't feel comfortable letting him do anymore work on my home. I had read through the handful of poor reviews he had gotten from other customers and many of them mention he either failed to show up when scheduled without any notice or failed to return messages and he would usually reply on your website to these reviews that he was ill. I can understand someone gets I'll, but he's running a business and the least he can do is call or send a text to let his customers know.I called Angie's List again and I told a representative I don't feel comfortable with working with John again. She told me once the 2 business day period passed, I could submit the form on Saturday (today) and indicate how I would like to see this resolved, either a refund or have another contractor correct the job. John called me back about an hour later and asked me if I was at home. I told him no, that I was at work. I then told him I spoke with Angie's List and I've decided to go through their guarantee and have another contractor correct the work. After submitting the Quality Guarantee request, I then was told the program started 2 days after I purchased this service, so Angie's List forwarded my concern to Complaint Resolution. In the meantime, I hired a licensed plumber through Angie's List (Dolphin Plumbing and Heating). They found that not only was the drain tail pipe had been shoved into the old P-trap, but there was also no washer installed and the drain in the basin was not installed correctly. Dolphin replaced the drain and installed all new piping from the P-trap all the way to the wall and they charged me less than JP did. On March 18th I heard back from Complaint Resolution that JP has refused to resolve my complaint. So, I will be filing complaints with the BBB and the State Attorney General, as well, I will pursue reimbursement through small claims court. I learned my lesson, stay away from Handymen and just work with licensed professionals.

"I apologized, no harm was done to your property. I'm sore for the inconvenience, my track record shows I am a highly skilled professional but sometimes even professionals make mistakes. Please keep in mind that since this I have watched several training videos and spoke to many license plumbers and I feel that much more confident to provide quality service. Thank you fro choosing Jp Carpentry and Handyman Services I'm sure"

John is punctual and listens carefully to the client, making sure that the job is handled to his or her's specifications. He handled these jobs with the same attention that he has given to the larger projects he has worked on for me. Everything came out fine and I intend on hiring him for any additional handyman projects I might have in the future.

Everything was done very nicely, up to code, the railing was especially beautiful, and his prices overall are very fair. I am a single female with a budget, I own my home in Beacon so it was refreshing that he has been real about what needs to be done and what doesn't. I like how he also gave me a few options so I can decide which fits in my budget. I will keep him as my go to handyman and I highly recommend his services.

It went poorly on so many levels.
John had some delays due to an injury and he also had a bigger project going on at the same time as our small project. We had already paid our 50 percent deposit.
His estimator mis-measured and the gutter was 2 feet short and it took my husband's insistence that he finish it.
Two of the four storm doors he installed he did OK, but kind of on the sloppy side. He didn't measure properly. The handles are off. On the front door, it's not centered and on the side door, the handle is high. He said that it needed to be that high to clear the inside knob. But it was still higher than it needed to be.
The other 2 doors, he actually hung in the wrong doorways. My husband told him clearly and he said he understood. They were 2 very different doors, both in expense and in style. We reluctantly paid him. They need to get changed out but now the hinges and swing are wrong. He also said that he put them where he did because he thought our dog might damage the door. We never asked him to consider our dog's play style. It didn't even come up in conversation.
He said that he would able to do the work in mid-January and we've not heard from him and have been waiting a month.
Upon further reflection, he is so inattentive and lax in his professionalism that we don't trust him to finish.
Response from JP Carpentry & Handyman Services
"Yes, I did have an injury but no I had no other job I am as I do most of my work by myself. I work on 1 job at a time which allows me to give members all of my attention to provide the best service I can. It's what makes me different from a "Contractor". Even with an injury you said you could not wait an insisted on me working due to your deposit, so I obliged because I honestly try very hard to please each customer and provide the best service I can. The Gutter was Shy around 3 inches, Your husband did insist on adding 3 more inches. So the next day I brought a piece of gutter to extend it, no problems I sincerely apologize if you felt like i was trying to get over on you Please forgive me. As far as the storm doors your husband laid out the storm doors for me next to the doors they went to. I installed them. you paid me, I left. You called me up the next day and requested I switch 2 of the doors with one another I said I can do it for a small fee, Unfortunately we couldn't agree on fee you promised me "tons" of more work if I did it for free.I am a very small business, just 1 man trying to make a living I almost always go above and beyond the service I was paid for. I love what I do and will continue doing it, Probably the reason why I continue to be awarded "Angie's List Super Service Award" for exceptional service for my handyman Category and service area. I appreciate your business and your review. You said you would give me a bad review and you did. I am sorry you didn't think I was entitled to compensation for a half days work due to your husband's oversight. when I left you paid me you were happy with the service you received I believe I am more than fair and would of been happy to resolve any problems within reason. My offer still stands. no hard feelings Thank you again for your Business and your review."
