The old sidewalk along the north side of our building was pooling rain water along the edge of the neighbor's property alongside her window well. During downpours water would invade the window well and swamp the drain, causing well to fill above window frame and into basement---causing damage. Our condo building was built 1929, and the neighbor's house in 2006. The neighbor wanted us to redo our sidewalk, whereas we felt we were there first, and she should replace the wedge brick sides of her window well. Nevertheless, there was no doubt that her window well was flooding because of excess rain water from our property. The neighbor offered to pay half the replacement of our entire back/rear sidewalk complex, and we would pay the other half. We accepted. THIS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF COOPERATION BETWEEN NEIGHBORS TO AVOID FRICTION.
The neighbor supplied one bid, and we supplied two others (including KAT CONSTRUCTION). The neighbor had the final say as to which option to pick. KAT was the only company to recommend the use of a French drain, and the neighbor, who already had such a drain on the other side of her property, liked the idea.
EXPLANATION $ RESULTS: The 4-inch COREX drainage pipe is flexible, with slits cut in it around the circumference. During downpours, water no longer builds up or pools along the edge of our sidewalk. Instead, it drains into the ditch and is drawn by the pipe toward the catch basin at the rear of our main building. The neighbor has reported no flooding since construction, and our own building's exterior drains under the stairs are no longer overwhelmed either. We had a rather dry winter and spring/summer, without any downpours until recently. That is why we waited to file our report until now, after we have had sufficient storms to test the system. An excellent solution!! We strongly recommend both this option and this contractor.

Kevin was pretty quick to get back to me when I first asked him to give me a quote. He showed up soon after our first phone conversation and gave me a quote instantly on what it would cost for the project. His quote was very reasonable, compared to two others I had received. I awarded Kevin the job and he thought he could get to the job w/in 6 weeks, due to other jobs ahead of us. We agreed to wait, as we weren't in a huge hurry. 6 weeks later, Kevin came out to start the job as promised.

Unfortunately the weather was brutally hot, so the job he figured would take him one day, took him two, due to the intense heat. Very understandable and in the end, the new concrete stairs were poured correctly. The only problem I had was that in our small parking lot, they had mixed concrete and spilled quite a bit on the blacktop. To our surprise, they left the mess and never cleaned it up. Plus they gave one of my neighbors, who I left the Condo Association's check with, a hard time concerning how much we were giving him. On Angie's List, Kevin had a coupon that was good for 5% off, for work done by 10/15/2012. We took the 5% off of the quote and gave him a check for the balance. He was upset, as he claimed that the quote factored in the 5% discount already.

No where on the quote did it say anything about a discount in the quote, so we feel that we gave him all that was due to him. Although he argued with one of our unit owners about this, he ultimately took the check, despite still being upset. I would recommend to Kevin that next time he does a quote, where he awards an Angie's List discount, I would make sure that the discounted portion of the bill is clearly identified, to eliminate any possible confusion.

Overall, we were happy w/ the job Kevin and his helper did. Just not pleased with his poor clean-up and argument over the check we gave him. I would still use him again, considering the great job he did, for a reasonable price.

The initial job was done when promised, but the replacement sidewalk has yet to be completed. I cannot recommend KAT Construction at this time. The irony is that, as a woman, I relied on Angie's list to help me pick a contractor and to some extent, I am disappointed with Angie's List.

Update 9/21/11:
In June 2010 KAT Construction poured a sidewalk in our front yard/gangway. We noticed pudlling and uneveness which they repaired with floor cement patch. Over the course of the fall/winter we noticed peeling of the repaired areas. By the time the weather cleared in March 2011 all the repairs were crumbled. It looked awful!I contacted the owner, Kevin Tooher, explaining the problem. He said he would come out when the "weather breaks". I called periodically through the spring and finally got a response when I informed him I would seek a partial refund from my credit card company(the cost was split between my and my husband's credit cards). They came out after Memorial Day this year and broke up the entire sidewalk/gangway, leaving large chunks of debris for our tenants and older neighbor to walk on. We complained about this and only got a response when we again threatened with the credit card company, citing liability concerns. After more back and forth the large chunks of debris were removed and forms set on July 1st, with the promise the job would be completed July 5th. July 5th came and went with no cement repoured. On July 6th Mr. Tooher informed me a client bounced a large check written out to him, leaving him with a financial problem. He gave us 2 options: He would have another guy finish the repour, paid out of our pocket and Mr. Tooher would reimburse us(approx cost $1,00.00-$1,200.00) or he would finish the job in 2-3 weeks. We opted for the latter, because we couldn't afford any more up front costs. Finally contacted Angie's List with my dilemma. Mr. Tooher promised me and Angie's List the job would be finished by September 1st. That did not happen. Mr. Tooher then promised Angie's List job would be done by September 10th. THAT didn't happen. Angie's List asked if I would be willing to extend it till September 26th, per Mr. Tooher's response to them. I declined, having enough of excuses all summer. I came to realize that Mr. Tooher doesn't want to pay for the materials/labor out of his pocket, based on comments he made to me and Angie's List. This was a disappointing and frustrating experience and I will NEVER recommend KAT Construction to anybody. I intend to seek a partial refund from them for incomplete work and will have to hire someone else to finish what they refused to do.
I contacted Kat construction in June but as you know the weather was lousy and we have to move the date back about three times. They kept me informed about when they thought they would get to my project and they did not take a deposit from me because they were not sure when the project would be completed.
When they started work, it went smoothly and quickly. Kat Construction cleaned up after themselves and I am satisfied with the work performed.

Kevin was a little difficult to get in touch with initially, but once contact was made things got rolling fairly quickly and the work was completed within two days from start to finish. Things I liked: 1. The price was fair for work done. 2. Kevin (the owner) was pleasant and honest and easy to work with. 3. Kevin was right there on the job with his men at all times. 4.When informed of a problem area Kevin himself came out to try to rectify the situation. Things I was not thrilled about: 1. One of the steps held water as it was not leveled correctly. (This has been fixed with a patch, which I hope will hold.) 2. There was no back filling done, I had to buy and haul in my own top soil to fill in along sidewalk. 3. I had to rake up quite a bit of gravel, cement and numerous cigarette butts.

Upon contacting Kevin at KAT, he didn't arrive for the first appointment in which he was supposed to provide an estimate. A little annoyed, we continued to pursue him as we liked his demeanor on the phone (he's an Irishman with a great brogue). He provided a very reasonable quote for the work we wanted done (redo the front concrete steps, install a fence and gate in the front yard). He began work early the next week. He arrived with a few helpers, all of whom were friendly and very entertaining. They absolutely did all of the work we asked them to do, and we are very happy with the results. They had to work a day or so more than they planned, but we were in no rush to get the work done, so that was fine.

The crew arrived promptly, was given an overview and immediately went to work. Everyone knew their job and proceeded to start. At the end of the day everything was secured and they cleaned up afterwards. They arrived promptly the next day to complete the work and again, everyone knew what to do and got right to work. They had a couple setbacks ( no fault of their own, but a lack of communication with tenants co-operating ) but did not let that deter them. They immediately resolved the issues and proceeded to do what they were hired to do. All the while the entire crew was professional, courteous, efficient. I was more upset than they were. Every obstacle they encountered ( again no fault of theirs ) they quickly took care of it and moved right along. I was amazed how fast things were done, especially since the days they worked the heat index was at least 100 degrees. They never wavered from the task at hand. I was just sorry I only had water to offer. When they finished everything was once again cleaned up. I was also really impressed because they also followed up to make sure we were satisfied with the work. We will absolutely call them to come back for additional work at a later date.

I was very dissatisfied with them. A lot of the tiles are crooked and he took an incredibly long time. There were several days when he did not show up and he had a lot of excuses for not showing up. Then when he finally did finish up the job, I had to have him come back and fix some tiles that were sticking out. Then the grout cracked and the shower door when he reinstalled it, it leaked. I was very unhappy with him.
Response from Kat Construction
"Ventilation & humidity was the problem. Set up fans and requested door to be left open, was not applied. Tiles took five days to dry, normal 24 hours. Grout did not dry right due to ventilation & humid conditions. Once again asked for fans & doors not to be touched or moved, had second washroom. REQUEST DENIED. Went back re-grouted shower, member happy & thanked me for fast response. Last contact with member."

The services from Kat Construction were fantastic. The work was done well and they were always on time. I had received 3 quotes for the work. $5000, $4500, and $3400 were the estimates. Kat Construction came in at the $3400 price. Kevin's crew showed up at exactly 8am the first day as he said they would. He also called me a day before to confirm the date and time. The work was done promptly and well. I have nice new front steps and a wall.

The company was very responsive and punctual from the begining to the end of the job. They provided a written estimate and finished the work within the timeframe discussed. The work was well done and the owner was both knowledgeable and curteous throughout the project. I would definitely recommend this company and have used them again myself for a second smaller job with the same quality results.

Kevin is courteous, honest, gets his work done and is very reasonable with his price. If you asking for free estimate, make sure you include him, because he is very reasonable with his price and gets the work done, too. I usually call Kevin back to do other jobs, as I know I can depend on him. He is not a middle man, because he and his crew actually does the work.
