I purchased a new hot water heater from Home Depot, and based off online reviews, I decided to forego HD's installers and use a local plumber for the installation. I contacted and engaged King George Plumbing as they are located in my town, and they appeared to have a good reputation, even though many people have previously told me that they are more expensive than their competitors.
Before or during the installation process (I am not exactly sure when it was determined), the King George rep informed me that the water pressure in our house was coming in too high (+100psi). Because of this, a new water pressure regulator was needed and it was going to cost me an additional $600+. As I reasoned that the water pressure was a safety issue, I consented to the installation of the new water pressure regulator, of which King George installed flawlessly.
After the installation was completed, the King George rep could not get the HWH to operate. The King George rep contacted Rheem's technical support, and based on this conversation, it was determined that new parts were needed (mind you, this is a brand new HWH). As I was relying on King George's expertise, I consented for the replacement parts and the King George rep informed me that they would return once the replacement parts were received.
A few days later, the replacement parts came in and King George sent another rep to install. The peculiar part of this new visit is, that even though King George charged me $675 for the installation of the HWH (on top of the $600+ for the new water pressure regulator), they were charging me an additional $180 for this visit, even though the HWH was not working after King George initially installed it.
The replacement parts were installed by the King George rep, but the HWH heater still did not work. The King George rep got back on the phone with Rheem technical support, and it was recommended that additional parts were needed. So, these additional parts were ordered and the rep told me that they would be back again once the additional parts were received.
The additional parts were received, King George came back out, installed the parts, and guess what...the HWH still did not work! At this point, it appeared that the King George rep gave up on the HWH (even though I had to pay an additional service call fee of $325), because in his write up of the service call, he included his recommendation that I purchase a new Bradford White HWH from King George for the total cost of $1500 (this included the installation).
The next day I called Gold Medal, as I had an inclination that it wasn't the HWH that was defective, but the service provided by King George. Lo and behold, within a half hour upon arrival, the Gold Medal rep had the HWH operational after a phone call to the Rheem technical support line. Moreover, I was told that the installation of the replacement parts was probably unnecessary, even though it was recommended by King George.
Apparently, what had happened, is that the HWH sensed natural gas fumes within the room, and it shut itself off (this is what it is supposed to do, and was one of the primary reasons I bought the HWH). When this happens, the machine needs to have a hard "reboot" (to borrow a computer term) so that it can come online and operate properly, going forward.
I contacted King George about this, and after relaying all this information to Brenda (whom I am presuming is King George's office manager), they made it sound like I was at fault for all of the troubles I received from the HWH installation. King George offered no apologies (the lack of hot water in our house prevented us from moving into it), no refunds (they kept charging me for additional visits, even though I had already paid for an installation and the HWH was non-operational after every visit), no nothing.
Moreover, King George did not even install a bonding wire, which is another item that is required on every HWH installation. I had to call them back and complain that the bonding wire was not installed, before they even mentioned it or affirmed that it is needed. (They did come out and install it, btw, but not after several rounds of phone calls and not after Brenda accused the Gold Medal rep of lying about the bonding wire).
Needless to say, I am currently waiting on my permit from King George, which I already anticipate I will not receive. The reason for this is because the gas valve (which is normally changed during a HWH installation) was not replaced by King George. However, this gas valve replacement is a permit issue; that is, if the city inspector sees the old, 30+ year gas valve that is currently installed, he will not pass the HWH installation as the old gas valve needs to be replaced. Again, King George is deflecting this responsibility and is adopting a wait-and-see approach before they replace the gas valve (even though a gas valve replacement is a standard service in any HWH installation AND as mentioned already, is a permit determinative issue).
In the end, and in light of all the charges I racked up with all of the King George visits, I ended up purchasing a yearlong membership from Gold Medal. It was worth every penny...
As such, it will go without saying, I will never use King George's services again nor will I ever recommend them to friends or family. The incompetence and expense is just too much!
