DO NOT HIRE. In March 2021 Kirt agreed to, and provided a contract for, building a utility shed on my property. He requested 50% of the cost of the contract as a deposit for materials. Over the course of the next several months he repeatedly told me that the materials had been ordered and we were waiting or delivery. Finally when pressed for more details, the materials had never been ordered. After much back and forth, I sued for the return of my deposit and was awarded judgement when he failed to appear in court. To date, my money has not been returned to me. Check his ratings at the Better Business Bureau and you will see a similar pattern.

We hired Kirt Johnson for remodel of our basement on 9/18/2020 and gave him a 50% deposit totaling $6685 for him to purchase materials that included framing, drywall, electrical, drop ceiling tiles, and lifeproof vinyl flooring. We were told by Kirt that the basement remodel would be starting the next week, as he had guys ready to work. We also gave Kirt a deposit totaling $10340 on 10/25/2020 for replacement of siding for our entire home (insurance money from Liberty Mutual for tornado damage). There has been delay after delay and always an excuse from Kirt regarding why the work isn't being done. We have been asking for receipts or invoices to prove materials have been purchased for over one month and he has been unable to provide these, stating he has so many receipts he is unable to keep track of them all. As of today, 12/1/2020 no work has been started on the siding or basement and no materials have ever arrived to our residence. He told us that he purchased siding from 2 separate Menards, however, we called every Menards and Home Depot in our area to check on the order status, and found no orders purchased under his name or our name/phone numbers (including materials for flooring, framing materials, or drywall). Every day he states that there has been a delay in the delivery, promising it will arrive the next day which it never does. We believe that he took over $17,000 dollars of our money and we have nothing to show for it. Despite repeatedly asking where materials were purchased, for any receipts, invoices, or order numbers we have not received any of these. We also asked for the name of the electrician that was supposed to begin work week after week, always with a delay/excuse, but he is unable to also provide this. We also offered to pay for materials already purchased if receipts were provided, but they have not been. We have no idea where this money has gone and have repeatedly asked for our money to be returned which he has not provided. This business is fraudulent. DO NOT HIRE!!!

I signed a contract in April for building a pergola and paid $1400 for materials. There were delays in supply chain due to Covid, at the beginning, but by end of summer, materials were available and supposedly had been ordered on April 20, 2020. After 3 promised dates to build the pergola and a letter to either build the pergola or send me a refund by the end of September, I have neither.

Mr. Johnson and his crew worked quickly and efficiently. Despite very cold weather, they completed the job in more than an appropriate time window.

The project went very well. Kirt said they could start in 2 days and would be done in 3-4 day. Kirt and his partner started early in the morning and finished the deck project in 3 days. They had to work around some rainy moments, but came back to the project as soon as the rain stopped. Kirt asked us what we wanted in a deck and followed through with all of our requests. We even made a change early into the project and Kirt was more than happy to listen to my wife and I and make the changes. He quoted us a price before the project started and that is the price we paid in the end. We got other estimates for this deck project and Kirt Johnson came in the as one of the lowest. He did not sacrifice quality with this project. We are looking to have more projects done around the house in the near future and will call Kirt Johnson to complete the projects.
It started out great! We signed the contract Aug 30, 2014. Mr. Johnson said it would be no problem to have everything done by Thanksgiving. He installed the French doors first. Beautiful work! His sub-contractors (plumber, drywall installer, and electrician) all completed their work by around mid-October.
By that time, a couple things had happened that bothered me. One was that Mr. Johnson texted my husband at work one night, asking if we could have placement of the new sink and toilet finalized and marked, because he wanted the plumber to come out in the morning. In order for that to happen, my husband had to first tear out the old toilet. Then he had to bring in (from the detached garage) the new toilet and the very heavy and bulky granite-topped vanity, by himself. He is in his upper sixties. He started at 11:00pm, fifteen minutes after he got home, and finished at 1:30am.
The second thing was that, sometime between the initial proposal and the final contract, installation of the (owner provided) flooring quietly went away, without mention and without any reduction in cost. Yes, we should have noticed that, and Mr. Johnson shouldn't have done that.
After mid-October, we just could not get Mr. Johnson to come out and finish his part of the job. All that was left was some trim work, and the space above the shower. After Thanksgiving came and went, we let it go til after New Years, then would call him every few weeks. He would say he could come out the next week, but repeatedly blow it off. He finally finished the job 8 1/2 months after he started.
Mr. Johnson had already been paid in full months before, because he asked. Yes, we both know better, but Mr. Johnson knew which one to approach for that favor.
I wasn't sure how to grade his professionalism. He was always pleasant in person. Just couldn't get him to show up.
In the end, we do have a lovely bathroom, but I can tell you that getting there became an aggravation that I would not want to repeat.
I called Kirt and he said he was busy but he still scheduled me for a few weeks out. He showed up gave me an estimate and even though I had to change some if my needs due to a structural problem, Kirt was willing to work with me. He was very professional and showed up when he said he would, got the job done and I was very happy. He worked in my hot attic and did not complain not once. I would recommend him to anyone. His price was right in line with other contractors and I know if I ever need anything else done he would be there to do it.

Kirt did a great job. He figured out how to straighten out the kitchen floor. Can't tell there was ever a hump there. Kirt and his partner showed up every day on time. Started the job when he said he would and kept the cost to the estimate. I was kept informed of what they were doing and how they were going to do it the entire way. They ran a couple days over the estimated time but they stayed here til it was finished. I love the job they did. My kitchen and bath look great
Kirt was very responsive in coming out to give a quote. We had already purchased all of the materials so we just needed labor to finish the job. At first I thought the quote may have been a little high but in speaking to Kirt during the quote he seemed very knowledgeable and professional. I had one other contractor come out to give me a quote and although they never actually submitted a quote, I had already decided that I wanted to use Kirt.
Kirt was prompt in showing up for the job. There was one tweak we made to the railing positioning on one side of the deck and he was welcome to discussing the adjustment and made the change to our satisfaction. We used decking material that he had not worked with before and it proved to be a bit more laborious to work with than Kirt expected so it took an extra day to finish. However, Kirt did not charge more than his quote so while it initially seemed a little high, I think in the end it was a fair quote.
Overall, we are very pleased with the work that Kirt did and will definitely call him again for future projects.

We were skeptical going into this project because his quote was 1/2 of the amount quoted by three other contractors. But since he was our front runner prior to hearing the price we went with our gut and we were not disappointed. Kirt and Shawn were incredible to work with from beginning to end. He was prompt in responding to any and all questions, made me feel safe even though there were strangers in my home, and really considered how to best execute our project to maximize the space that we had. He stated upfront that we would not have any surprise fees, that what we saw in the quote is what we would get. He was true to his word. He used great subcontractors and there were no surprises. He even built my daughter a vanity drawer and didn't charge us entra. Our basement is beautiful and we can't thank him enough. I wish we could give an A++++++
This is the second project we've worked with Kirt and Shawn on. They are extremely easy to work with and their pride of workmanship and attention to detail shows in their work. The farmhouse, being 100 years old, has lots of uneven walls and floors and Kirt knew just how to fix things. There were several curve balls but he handled every one and the house now looks amazing. We are not planning on buying any more properties in the near future, but if we did we'd call Kirt first.

I was very pleased with the way the kitchen project progressed. The painters came first and painted walls and cabinets, then Kirt and Sean started their work. They installed a new wood floor with such attention to detail it was as though they were creating a work of art.
We had several unusual requests such as removing an oven from a stone wall and then changing the remaining hole into a built in bookshelf and designing a building 5 open shelves with decorative corbels and repurposing an unused closet into a pantry.
We were thrilled with the results, and the thing we appreciated most is they both kept telling us that the job was not over until we were perfectly satisfied with every detail; and they were true to their word!
.Their prices were very reasonable and they were a delight to work with. Both Kirt and Sean were friendly, helpful and intent on pleasing. They were very punctual and reliable and at they end of the day everything was left neat and orderly.
I truly can't think of one negative experience we had with them.
I thank Angie's List, because it was there that we got Kirt's name. I would definitely recommend him and use him any time the need for his services should arise.

I need an A++++++ button to describe working with Kurt and Shawn. We are from out of town and relied on Angie's List to find a contractor that would handle everything for us, and that we trusted because we wouldn't be there day to day to oversee the projects. We more than found that with Kurt.
From the beginning Kurt was extremely professional and knowledgeable. Our project was quite extensive and he took care of everything. His bid was fair and when all was said and done he actually came in under his original bid, and worked with our insurance company to save us even more. The work he did was incredible and you can tell Kurt is a perfectionist and takes pride in his work.
We are hoping to hire Kurt and his team for our next project.
This was a wonderful experience for my husband and I. We expect "near" perfection when we hire a job done, and Kirt and Sean lived up to that. Besides their excellent craftsmanship, they were friendly, great at communicating with us, and the job was done in a timely manner. You will not be sorry to hire these 2 guys, because they take pride in their work and it shows!!
Kirt gave us an estimate that was much more reasonable than another we had gotten so we decided to have him do the work. We are very glad that we did! He and Shawn were great to work with and the subcontractors that he chose were very good also. The new front stoop was completed first and that is beautiful. Kirt and Shawn tore out the closet and built a new header wall in a few hours which really opened up our interior space. The front door and one of the windows presented some unexpected challenges but they were able to find solutions easily. Building the roof over the front door was more complicated of course, and that took about a week to complete, but they kept us in the loop the entire time - telling us what they were doing and why they were doing it and asking our opinion every step of the way. They pay a lot of attention to detail. It turned out great! We love our "new" house and we would definitely use Kirt Johnson Construction again.

He is a wonderful contractor and his work is awesome. He went to a local window maker and ordered the exact windows as I wanted. He watches out for sales so that he can make it less expensive for me. If he is not comfortable with what something costs he will try to get the better price for me. I would use him again in the future.

Once they were actually into the project, they found an architectural flaw which caused the problem. For a very modest additional fee, they corrected the flaw and provided a sound, dry and visually appealing result. They were very easy to work with and followed through as promised in regards to schedule, appointments and results!! Would definitely hire them again!!!
