Lean'n Green Lawn Care

Lawn Care Maintenance and Mowing, Tree Service, Landscape Soil, Sand, Mulch and Rock Delivery,

About us

Lean ‘n Green was started back in 1978 by Paul Osborn who grew the company into what it was in 2006 when I, Noah Ruggieri, came on board with him. It was named Paul’s Lawn Service all the way up until 2010 when we changed the name to what it is now. When I started Paul began to realize retirement was close at hand so I apprenticed him for a year and then purchased the company in 2007. He still counsels me to this day if I ever have any questions. Lean ‘n Green started as a basic mowing service, but over the last several years we have been able to incorporate many complimentary services into the business to better serve our clients. Locally owned & operated lawn care business serving residential & commercial clients. No other employees. Rarely hires sub contractors. Charges by the job. No travel/trip charges.

The first experience was great: everything was done quickly and efficiently. When we tried to arrange the second half of the job, it took forever to get ahold of them, and a wheelbarrow was left in our yard for days.
Getting them to consistently show up has been a challenge. I've had to call to ask for them to show up every week because they would consistently miss our agreed upon mow-date, and it's now been 3 weeks since they've been to mow my lawn.
Punctual, professional. All I asked them to do was rake and they mowed for free.
It was okay but I wouldn't use them again. The digging out was pretty good. The kid who did the back weeds was a very nice kid but he didn't have any work ethic at all. He didn't know I was watching him but I was watching him from my back upstairs window. He would work well and then sit. When I'd come out or when he'd know that I was watching him, he'd pretend that he was busy. He did not accomplish very much, not even a third of the area in two hours. I wouldn't use them again. It was a vine that went deep into the ground and he didn't take time to take it out from the roots so it grew back quickly. The work that I expected to be completed within those two hours didn't get completed.

I live out of state and in August 2014 I hired this business to do weed removal and cleanup at my mother's house in Champaign. When I visited over the Christmas holiday I was finally able to see the result of the work performed and I do not feel it was a good value for the money. Initially purchased $85 for four hours yard clean up plus debris disposal on August 13. Contacted Noah and explained I wanted additional work done to clear the entire front yard of weeds and lay down mulch to slow down the weeds growing back. Estimate for materials (mulch and weed barrier) was given as $350 to cover main front yard and the smaller area between the street and sidewalk. Total estimated hours of work came to 10 hoursfor an additional $150 over the original $85. After this was agreed, my mother decided that she did not want the main part of the yard cleared of weeds and instead wanted some small trees at the side of the house removed and to just have the weeds cut down to 6 inches high in the main part of the yard.
The final work done included that the portion of the yard between sidewalk and street was cleared of weeds and covered with underlayment and mulch. I measured and it is about 430 square feet. This is less than 1/3 of the total front yard, yet the final bill had a materials charge of $350 which was the same as the original estimate of material to cover the entire front yard. This made no sense to me but I was told by Noah that the man who did the original estimate just didn't do a good job. So either they don't know how to do accurate estimates or they overcharge for material. I feel I got overcharged. At $50 a cubic yard for mulch, 4 cubic yards should have been enough to cover the 430 square feet to a depth of 3 inches and that would be $200 for the mulch, so the 430 quare feet of uderlayment comes in at $150. This seems very overpriced to me. The final invoice didn't say how many cubic yards of mulch they applied and in the end I get the sense they have no idea how much they actually used.
The main part of the yard was essentially untouched. Nothing at all was done to make it look neater. No downed limbs removed and the vegetation/weeds was about 5 feet high rather than six iches.
In addition to the weed removal and mulching described above, two dead tree limbs were removed ($25 each) and some amount of work was done to trim back some bushes which were growing out over the sidewalk. Trees at the side of the house were not removed as my mother had requested.
According to the invoice, all this work took 10 hours, exactly matching the original estimate. I wish I had been there to supervise because to me the end result did not look like 10 hours worth of work had been performed.
Finally, I did not feel very satisfied with my interactions with this business. After the original contact with Noah, almost all communication was with one of his employees, an older man who was rather difficult to talk with on the phone. He seemed to have a hard time understanding my description of the work I wanted done, and I in turn found his explanations to be unclear and hard to follow. In the end I feel it would have been better to have only been communicating with Noah, the owner. Also, the original contact was in August, but no work was even started until midway through October. Part of the delay was due to my mother's decision to change the nature of the work to be done, but even so for nothing to done for over 6 weeks seemed excessively slow. Various reasons were given: it rained, so we had to wait, the employee went on vacation so we had to wait until he got back, etc. In the end it's too bad I didn't just realize that things were not going well and just cancel the whole thing. For a total cost of $585 I do not feel I got good value for my money based on the end result.
On the plus side, at least the area covered with mulch was done OK. I suppose the work actually done was of decent enough quality, but the price point seems much too high.
It wasn't too bad. The work was decent. It was exactly $85 and I gave them a list of stuff to do within the 4 hour period. I didn't see them because I was at work when they came. The price was good.

I was contacted within 24 hours of purchasing the deal on Angie's List. I think some of the confusion was my fault because I was also thinking I could have them do some tree pruning but I would have to wait on estimate for that. Because of lateness of year,. decided to just go with aeration. I didn't need to be home, so I told them to just go ahead. I was getting anxious and emailed on 10/26 because it hadn't been done and I wanted to put down some fertilizer afterwards. I got home the next day and it was done, and what I really appreciated was that it seemed like they gave extra attention to the bare spots, roughed up the soil, so maximum contact for fertilizer.
I will definitely keep this number on hand for any future work.
Noah was very responsive via email and was able to work with my rather tight schedule surrounding the sale of my home. My initial appointment with him was for the trimming of hedges and the cutting back of them. I was pleased with the work, so I called Lean'n Green with the buyer insisted on having a tree removed and the stump ground down. If I were still in town, I would definitely call Noah the next time I needed landscaping work.
It was easy to schedule with them and they came out promptly as scheduled for the estimate. They told me something I didn't know which wa that the city needed to prune certain trees in the 'tree lawn" between the sidewalk and the street. They were friendly and informative. They agreed to schedule work the next week. When I didn't hear back I called tham and they arranged to have the guys out next day (it was apparently already scheduled but they hadn't called me.). They did the work very well. I have to hand it to them because they cut one tree in particular back further than I expected, but in the end they were right. All work was done professionally.
Noah was wonderful. I can't say enough good things about him. He and his crew were on time, worked hard, and did a great job. Noah was able to cut down the offending tree outgrowth that was causing the branches over the roof. He also hauled away some old sticks I had amassed. They were wonderful to work with and I recommend them to anyone needing good work at a fair price.
Also, Noah was able to work with me on a payment plan, allowing me to make payments rather than being forced to come up with the full amount all at once. It was a wonderful relief to be able to do that.
