My home is an English tudor duplex built completion before 1933. It was my Great Grandmother’s home, passed down to my mother, Phyllis Levine, 80 yrs. old, that also grew up in the house. I have lived there since 1975. I have lived in both units but most of my life I have lived upstairs. I am now 53 years old. There was a spark in the outlet in the kitchen. In a pinch, I look up angi.com and submitted the problem. Within an hour or some time to come over and look at it. Paula from OC Handy Bro’s Pro’s called, saying it sounded serious. On Dec. 28, 2022, Randy and Paula and Nester, the electrician, came to assess the spark in the kitchen outlet. The wiring is original in most places, so they said they need to rewire the whole duplex. Paula kept saying this was a “911 situation & the electrical needed to be up to code”. Within 3 days, Paula had convinced me to pack for 2 weeks worth of clothes because I would be out of the house for at least a month. I was to have my rotator cuff replaced on Jan. 12th, so I postponed the surgery. Randy and Paula met with my mom, the landlord, and myself to go over the paperwork for the job the next day. She explained the estimate and my mom signed off on the electrical to be done. I wasn’t quite comfortable with the fact that she called us sweetheart and thought my mom was cute (at 80) but she convinced my mom & I that they had quality packers and movers to pack up my home and move it into storage and back after completion. Some of the furniture would be moved to the middle of the rooms and covered with plastic for protection from the dust, etc. They would begin work starting Jan. 2, 2023. I asked that we, Paula, the representative, my mom and myself communicate together, to be on the same page. On Dec. 29th I started the text chain between the 3 of us. On Jan. 2nd, they came in, noting the water damage from the outside window sills on the south side living room and dining room windows. There were a few wood panels that had warped and needed replacing – also noting the need to tent the house due to termites. Paula said she could replace the panels but they probably would not be a perfect match but she had a guy that does wood floors. She also pointed out the exterior window sills were rotting, which meant water coming into the walls. Also the need for re-stuccoing which is another job in itself. On Jan. 3rd they opened up the wall under my dining room window and found a wet beam. They would have to wait till it dried to finish the electric, which was complicated by the rain. On Jan. 5th, I came by the house to see what had been done. I noticed that there was scraps in the linoleum kitchen floor. I texted the picture and Paula said she would take care of it. At this point, I’m house sitting for a friend in Lawndale near my work. There were a lot of phone conversations about what was going on, the paint colors and things I could choose for interior light fixtures. These conversations were not the three of us together but a back and forth more between my mom and Paula. Then I sent a text that I was concerned because I hadn’t heard from her on 1/12. She replied the next morning saying they were completing everything in my apartment that day and were starting on the apartment downstairs. The pictures she sent were from the home depot website of the fixtures she’d purchased (not installed). She was so convincing that she would work with me on the only home I’ve known. It was during this interaction she mentioned having to replacing all the windows – which I was not included in the conversation between Paula and my mom. I was shocked they had picked the fixtures out without my approval or even a concern about my input that I didn’t realize she had stated ALL THE WINDOWS. We didn’t speak about the timeline, the cost, the type of windows, what the options were, etc. The front windows are especially unique, leaded (yes, lead) diamond shapes French windows that are original to the house. At some point, she had upsold my mom to let them replace 26 windows without me. There were 28, they missed two closet windows that I addressed on Feb. 20th, which Paula said to make sure the area was clear up to 5ft from the window. By Feb. 26th I was asking when they would be completed with the inside so I could at least move back in but they were delated cause of weather. She did not answer the question. On March 3, she sent us pictures of the upstairs windows installed from the interior. I arrived on March 6th to the noticeably NOT Finished front upstairs window. We meet Paula & Randy to go through what they had done. I had tears in my eyes the whole time knowing I would be looking through the windows everyday I had no choice in choosing. Paula told me she understood, cornered me into trying to get me to hug her. I told her I didn’t want the hug that this was a lot, almost to much for many reasons – not wanting to lash out. I felt that was very inappropriate for her to do, especially how things ended. I just wanted to know when the cleaners were coming so I could start moving back in. On March 8th, Paula texted about setting up my bedroom, which was not discussed. She just assumed, to which she set things up to hide the huge scratches they made to my original wooden floors. She texted pictures that the house was clean. My mom told me Paula had been cleaning everything. I was under the impression there were professional cleaners coming in to clean all the dust particles, especially all the furniture that didn’t get covered. I asked her to please stop until I could get down there to see what needs to be done, especially cleaning wise since I am asthmatic. On March 11th, walking around the house, it was clear the windows were not reframed professionally let alone completed. There were drops of weathering foam on the interior walls, baseboards, floor. The exterior exposer of the windows is terrible and the workers heard me expressing my disappointment. There was dust everywhere in my apartment. My clothes were filthy from sitting on the bed. I texted and asked when the professional cleaning service was coming to clean the debris, when the closet window they missed would be installed, and missed outlets covered? She noticed the referred closet window from my prior address on 2/20 stating she didn’t know about it. I was also trying to coordinate the movers but the rain created a problem for that next week. I asked again for her to send the window paperwork, which she promised again she’d send. That Monday, March 13th, Paula stated that her father was passing and would be back during the week. She also made comment about the workers being concerned about me (because I was upset at what I saw). I replied that evening with a list of undone items from my “layman’s eye”. I also stated, I did not know what needed to be addressed downstairs. March 14th she replied with a competition list and plan to clean my apartment. I replied asking for the punchlist and again the paperwork. On March 15th, after pleading for the paperwork, she emailed it to me at 8pm that night. After looking at everything on March 18th, the next day I texted Paula to ask to go over everything that they had done and a complete set of paperwork. I texted her the next day, March 20 stating I was under the impression the job was complete inside and out by the March 18th text but my mom thinks the exterior will be complete when the weather clears up. The next morning she said she is currently dealing with funeral services and gave Randy’s number. She stated only rotted wood was replaced and that all work was complete. She gave us Randy's number, which I texted asking to go over the work. He stated he was busy for the next 3 weeks. Since then, we have not heard a peep. On the last days they were on site, the downstairs neighbor heard Randy speaking very disrespectfully about both my mom and me. I paid $250.00 to have the 2 bedroom apartment cleaned, after a girlfriend and I cleaned for a weekend. My furniture is still in storage, which I will have to pay for to move back. I have also found out that Randy Pennington is NO
