First thing: Angie's List currently has Lucas Special Services as a licensed contractor. They are not licensed. I'm currently selling my house, and I had some repairs to do at the behest of the buyer, who required me to use a licensed contractor, as is fairly typical. I asked Earl up front if he was licensed, and he told me he was. I have attached a picture of the text exchange where I ask him if he is indeed licensed, and he responds that he is. After some negotiating, he went to work. He did the following things on the first day: Used a different thickness board around the framing of a window on the outside. Didn't caulk around certain windows because, as best as I could figure, he had white caulk and didn't want to match the gray caulk that was on the windows and couldn't paint it to look correct. Forgot to replace the exhaust vent. Couldn't install the garage door spring safety cables. He initially indicated that these were already installed, but after some pushback, he admitted that he was not comfortable installing them. This is fair, as I wouldn't want him to do something he wasn't comfortable doing. After inspecting the work, he came back the next day. He replaced the window frame properly. I haven o problem with this. He still didn't seem to want to match the caulk, but he painted the caulk with siding color, which was not ideal, but was fine. He couldn't fit the vent he had brought onto the siding as it was adjacent to a bumpout, so he crammed it in at an angle and tried to fill the gap with caulk. I attached an image of this. I was fairly upset about the vent, so I had him come back again the next day. He got a new exhaust vent and still couldn't git it onto the siding, so he again crammed it in at an angle and filled the gap with caulk. At this point I hired somebody else to do the exhaust vent, who did it properly. Earl gave me some money back at this point. I then just asked him for the invoice with his contractor license number to show to the buyers that I used a licensed contractor. After some back and forth, he revealed to me that he doesn't have a license, "he doesn't need a license to be a handyman," and that repair requests "just ask for somebody who's been in the business for a while." He indicated that he had told me that he was not licensed, but was insured when I asked him earlier. I have attached a text conversation with him that indicates otherwise. So now I'm in a messed up situation where I have repairs done to the house against the contract I've signed, and I'm currently trying to see what the buyers say. Regardless, I genuinely cannot fathom how this guy gets good reviews. This has been literally the worst contractor experience I've ever had.
