I am very pleased They were friendly and professional, came when they said they would, and did the job as they said they would. The tree and debris were all removed, and at a reasonable cost. I would definitely hire them again.

The main purpose for was to open up the backyard to more sun and light; and in general to spruce up the yard and grounds. David's crew did a wonderful job accomplishing exactly what we had wanted them to do. Cleaned up everything and did no damage to the sod nor the asphalt. Considering the quality of the advice from David and the results -- the price was very reasonable.

Lusk Tree Service does a superior job. This is the second time I have used their services. The first time was several years ago when I had two dead trees removed. The old adage is trueand quot;you get what you pay forand quot;. Knowledgeable arborists and professional staff!! Highly recommended!!
I live in an area that has a lot of new construction. My house is about 2 1/2 years old and my neighbor's is even newer. I have a large tree that died within about two weeks this summer and was given Mr. Lusk's name as a arborist when I called the County Extension Office. When Mr. Lusk told me that my dead tree was the result of the grading of the land during construction, I thought it was a reasonable explanation. He also stated that possibly all of my ~10 mature trees in my back yard would likely die from the grading during construction. However, I felt his price for removal (of the one dead tree) was a bit high and got a second quote from a highly rated Angie's List tree service. When the other company arrived, the man said immediately that the tree had been hit by a borer beetle. As we walked to the tree he told me what we would see due to the borer invasion. It was exactly what he had stated and we even saw some of the dead larvae on the tree's bark. The price given for removal of the tree was less than half of Mr. Lusk's proposed estimate.
I e-signed a contract prior to Mr. Lusk's examination and tree assessment and am out the $90 I agreed to for the opinion of the professional arborist. I feel he was way and quot;off his gameand quot; the day he examined my tree and his proposed price for removal was ridicuoously high.
"November 11, 2013 Dear Ms. [Member name removed], I apologize for the delay is responding to your Angie's List negative review of my services. I was just notified by a dismayed client of your review. Enclosed is a refund for the $90.00 tree assessment. I am sorry for your disappointment. Although you question my ability to correctly diagnose tree problems, please note that I have spent the last 40 years studying and working with trees. I studied under the late Dr. Alex Shigo, one of the worlds leading tree scientists and now considered the "father" of modern Arboriculture. His endorsement of me, many years ago, played an integral part in my being accepted as a member of The American Society of Consulting Arborist- the highest ranking organization in the field of tree diagnostics. I am the only consulting arborist by way of qualifications in Winston-Salem. The website is ASCA-consultants.org. There you will find information about our duties and expertise. With all due respect, my assessment that your tree died due to loss of roots during the construction of your home, driveway and landscape/lawn installation is absolutely, albeit unfortunately, correct. Wood borers brought to your attention by the tree cutters are a secondary pathogen that seek out weakened trees. Dead and dying trees are host to many organisms. Many trees die on construction sites where preventative measures have not been laid out prior to construction. I have included references from leading texts that clearly point out that root damage predisposes trees to borer infestations and disease. Your tree removal expert was correct about insects in the damaged tree but his more than obvious discovery is of only a part of the story. His assessment addresses merely a symptom and not the cause of the tree's death. At no point did I say all your trees would die. I did, however, state that the root systems of your trees, as well as, others in the neighborhood have been compromised. Some trees will survive, others will not. My award winning company, Lusk Tree Care Services, Inc. is considered one of the premier tree services in North Carolina. We are often underbid by the local competition who cut significant corners in order to provide the lowest cost bids. For example: 1.) Falsely advertising full insurance coverage when in fact they do not carry workers compensation protect the workers on site. The cost for this coverage is exorbitant with tree services having one of the highest rates of any profession. 2.) Some companies do not provide liability insurance coverage in the event of property damage. 3.) Many local, well known, " highly rated" tree companies also hire and pay their workers cash "under the table" as a means of avoiding withholding taxes, social security taxes and all the while circumventing insurance protection in the event of personal injury. I know this because I have hired many people over the years who once worked for these companies. I have heard repeatedly that they were paid cash, no withholdings, (no paper trail). Some were told that if they got injured, they were on their own. Angie's List does not do background checks to confirm insurance or other legal requirements in any profession. I applaud Angie's List for allowing me to set the record straight. The properties we work on and our references are without equal. We do not cut corners or operate illegally. Our methods are safe and efficient. (Our cost for the equipment that would have been used to remove your tree would have exceeded $300,000.) I am sorry our price was higher. I wish I had known before now of your complaints and I could have possibly renegotiated or reevaluated the cost while providing certificates of insurance and a highly skilled staff of uniformed, professional, fully insured tree workers utilizing the most modern equipment and methods. I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have. My direct number is 336-399-4800. Sincerely, David Lusk"

The Lusk people are wonderful in every way, even though they are expensive. We received an accurate estimate before the process began. Workers arrived early on the correct date, and in a timely fashion (on time), work was continuous (no loafing ,cell phone calls or smoking). They did stop for lunch and then worked until late afternoon. All logs from the downed tree were hauled away, and limbs and branches were ground up by a giant machine. The saw dust from the machine was hauled to a specific place so that my husband could us it as mulch. Clean-up was excellent. They answered all questions as the work progressed. Lusk is the only tree service we will use in the future.
Great service from start to finish. I called on Thursday; David was here first thing Friday morning to give a quote. The team was here on time the following week. The foreman was very polite, courteous, accommodating, and friendly with my kids. All workers were very professional and wearing all the right safety gear and were clearly skilled in their trade.
I called 4 tree companies to request estimates and this company was the first to respond and show up to do the estimate. Of the four, this company had the second lowest price. It took a few weeks for them to come do the work but due to recent storms I though the wait was reasonable. They also accommodated the timeframe I requested. The workers showed up on time and were very polite. Most of the work was done very well and the trees look great. However, one tree in the backyard looked unfinished/uneven. I don't know very much about tree trimming so I called to ask about the work that was done to that particular tree. I thought there was probably a reason it was trimmed differently from the others and I was curious about it. I spoke with the owner of the company and he was extremely rude during this phone call. Before I even finished my question he was yelling at me, asking what I wanted him to do. I don't know why but he seemed very angry and kept interrupting me. It was such an uncomfortable conversation that I declined his offer to come back out and finish the tree in question. Had the tree been in the front yard I might have asked him to come back but quite frankly, his attitude was so appalling, i didnt want him back at my house and figured I could live with the unfinished tree since it was in the back yard and wasn't as visible. (All other conversations with him and his staff were great prior to this.) The crew that did the work did an excellent job of cleaning up the yard before they left.

Everything went fine except for the fact that when they came, they didn't let us know the day before. We came home that day and found they had been there and done all their work. There was one thing that they didn't do that we would have told them to do if we had been here. That's the only complaint I have about them. We have used them before. They are very careful tree people. Every few years we tend to call them up and have them do something to the trees. We don't have that many trees, but they are large. There is one we have that is really big so we worry about it falling over our house every once in a while. I am not sure about the price. They came out to give estimates and they did the work in a reasonable amount of time. It was just the lack of telling us that they were coming that day, coming without having us know. They really didn't give us enough heads up.

Lusk Tree Service exceeded our expectations in every way. We recently moved to a new home, and the trees needed some care and maintenance. David Lusk quickly responded to my call and came out to give an estimate that same day as I recall. He was able to identify every tree in the yard and put together a plan of care. I had great confidence that David not only knew trees, but genuinely loved them too and was very knowledgeable about their care.

On the scheduled day of service, rain caused a delay, but Lusk Tree was in excellent communication with us so that I knew exactly when to expect them. Every worker I met was extremely professional, honest, knowledgeable and well-trained. I again had great confidence they would do the work well. And they did, even down to the little things like blowing debris off our driveway and rearranging the pine straw so that you couldn't even tell work had been done. The weather forced them to come back on subsequent days to finish up the work, but every experience was as good as the first day.

They are probably not the cheapest in town, but this is one area where you get what you pay for!! And they are very reasonable when you consider the quality of the work done. They were also able to work with me to give me options for keeping the cost down. These people are professionals in every way and will do an excellent job taking care of your trees. [As a side note, they also carry workers' compensation and liability insurance. Many cheaper outfits do not, and you do not want an accident to happen on your property if the contractor does not cover their employees - in some cases you could be held liable for their injuries.]

Overall, this is one of the best experiences I've had with any contractor of any type. I whole-heartedly recommend Lusk Tree Service and will definitely call them again if I need further help.

"Thank you for your thoughtful review of our services. Our goal at Lusk Tree is to provide the most qualified, ethical and best service possible from the first phone call to the completion of the project. Thank you too for advising and cautioning others that cheap tree services, more often than not, indicate that corners are being cut somewhere. For example, not providing worker's compensation insurance for all personnel on the work site, low limits of property liability, use of less qualified temporary workers and/or uninsured sub-contractors posing as employees with an emphasis on getting the job done as quickly as possible, rather than safely and conscientiously. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to write the report and your awareness that even with trees "you get what you pay for". David Lusk -President, Lusk Tree Care, Inc."

David Lusk, the owner, stopped by and assessed/discussed what needed to be done. He then e-mailed a quote. The crew arrived two days later and did the work as prescribed - including removing a small, dead tree at no extra charge.

Fine, the business is located just a couple miles from our house and they were out within a couple days and did the work with no problem.
Response from Lusk Tree Care Services, Inc
"As the owner of the company I find any grade less than an A to be not acceptable. I would like to respectfully submit more specifics with regard to the project. There was a 2 man crew on site from 8:30 till10:45. There was a log truck (50,000 dollars) and a skid steer (25,000 dollars) required to haul away a broken pine top, a pine log and removal of 2 uprooted stumps. The debris was hauled to a dumpsite which was an hour turn around time for truck and driver. The landfill fee was 50.00 dollars. I do believe that the uprooted stumps complicated the estimated time given that it is often difficult to gauge just how much digging is required to remove them. Some can be dug more easily than others and often we don't know until we try. Still, we are required to provide for an agreed upon amount. I have never increased an agreed upon amount, however, I have re-negotiated lower costs if it were deemed fair and appropriate. I am glad that Angie's List provides contractors the ability to provide comments. Thank you. David Lusk"

We found out that we were going to have to replace our septic system, and after getting the final plans and recommendations from the health department, started calling around for estimates. Because several trees were identified as being a possible issue we called several businesses for tree removal services. The first estimate required that we move the biggest trees on the property (2 large) for a flat rate of $3200, not many options were given. Then I called Lusk. They came out the next morning to review the plans and property. We discussed the different trees and they determined that only 1 of the larger trees and a somewhat smaller tree would have to be removed, saving one of the oldest and largest on the lot. Also, we were able to discuss the different areas (stump removal, wood removal, etc) and he made recommendations where we might be able to cut costs. Because of the amount of rain we'd had the tree removal would have to be postponed to allow equipment to get in without getting stuck or destroying the property. The estimate to complete the the work was 2-3 weeks and the written estimate/contract was itemized to cover every detail so we could see where the costs could be shaved if necessary. Upon request we received proof of insurance. Expecting not to have the work done for 2 weeks I was pleasantly surprised when they called within a week to start work. The first day of work the crew and 4-5 trucks showed up. The foreman introduced himself, gave me his card, and gave me the timeline/work schedules for the crew so I'd know what to expect. They kept their word. Everyone was prompt, professional, worked all day on the job, and didn't hesitate to answer any questions or concerns. Most of all they worked safely to prevent any mishaps to themselves, our property, or neighboring property. The job took 2.5 days and after each work day, the property was cleaned of all debris and looking clean. I can't rave enough about the level of professionalism and how pleased we are with their work every step of the way.

They did a good job with the clean up. They are maybe a little on the pricey side however the job was done very quickly for the size of the trees we had. I would gladly recommend them.
