We had a 35 year old harvest gold fiberglass tub and surround that now looks brand new. Patrick was on time, did the work exactly as planned and for the quoted price.
Everything worked out well. Patrick has a good feel for what he is doing when it comes to plumbing. He came to my home with the parts needed and went to work. He eliminated the amount of time that our water had to be shutdown and he was clean and neat during the installation. He also helped correct some other plumbing issues while he was at our home. His pricing was fare and I didn't feel like he tried to add on extra costs. Did an excellent job overall.
We had to call in a plumber for an emergency repair, this other plumber also quoted pipe replacement, but would have required an additional contractor for the finish work.
I searched Angies list and found some candidates for the total job including Madisons Plumbing(Plumber and Carpenter in One). Some further research on individual websites indicated that Patrick Madison would be a good fit.
At first he didn't want to quote because he didn't realize the extent of the remodel type of work and another contractor had already been involved for the emergency repair. I convinced him that this job was right up his alley. He set a date one or two days out and visited the site for quote. He replied the next day with an estimate of 17 man days and an attractive rate base on the extent of the work. I decided that he was the man for the job but he would need to add a man to expedite the completion of the job, as we would need to get our parents out of the house for the duration of the work.
Start and completion dates were set, he and his assistant arrived on time and made great progress every day.
I selected and supplied tiles and grout. (Just in time because the job progress was so fast)
Adders were: 1)Grab Bar in the shower. 2)Replacement Toilet. 3)Island style venting for the kitchen sink. 4)Power vent water heater, pvc vent pipe, electrical outlet for water heater.
He finished half a day early and essentially the only added cost was the purchase price of the water heater. There was enough in the original material estimate to cover the toilet and misc. hardware.
During the job the worksite was cleaned and maintained presentable. Plastic sheeting was used to control dust. Tarps were used to protect floors. Cleanup after the job was very good. Yes there was a very light dusting from the drywall work in much of the house and some light debris was overlooked in one room. Overall much better than I would have expected.
I told him about some of the things that I was doing after the job and he offered to do it for me, I declined and he offered suggestions and resource info.
I WILL call him again with more work in the future!!!!

"These guys were great to work for. The original call ... they had already had another company out there to fix the repair so ... yes ... I did declined because yes I had no idea it was that big of a job. They had 3 solid weeks (or 17 days) worth of work to do with one guy but for family reasons (reasons I will leave undefined) they needed back in there sooner than later. I pulled in another guy in and completed the job in 8 days right down to duplicating the textures on the ceiling. There was some dust that we did purposely left in the study area where the bulk of the drywall was done. It was a desk that was full of (neatly stacked) paperwork. We did not want to touch, adjust, move, or in otherwise disturb their important papers. I did clear this with Member on the completion day. This was a great job for us to do and just love to get into the middle of stuff like this. Thank you very much."

WOW! I'm absolutely thrilled with Patrick at Madison's Plumbing! I was able to contact him via both email and phone, which was very convenient for me. I work in Iowa City and live in Cedar Rapids, and he conveniently accommodated my work schedule when scheduling my appointment. He arrived on time, quickly evaluated the items he needed to do the job, retrieved them immediately, and had the whole project completed in no time at all! He was extremely polite and professional while he explained what needed to be done. His prices are very reasonable and are a bargain compared to what I have paid other plumbers. I live in a neighborhood that flooded in 2008, so I'm also very happy to be able to support a local business from my own neighborhood. I'm a single female homeowner and I felt totally comfortable with Patrick in my home. That has not always been the case with other contractors, but Patrick is definitely trustworthy.
I had already let a lot of water go down the drain while I had waited for a previous plumber to call me back after several unreturned calls, and I wish I had called Patrick first. I definitely will call him first (and only) from now on.
It went well. The toilet had to be removed because it was too close to the tub. This cost an additional $50. I'm glad I have another bathroom! I will have to put the toilet back in the bathroom this week-end since the room remains sealed and un-useable for at least 24 hours after the re-surfacing.
I received complete instructions for removing the plastic sheeting and tape used to seal the bathroom. I will need to caulk around the tub when the tape is removed (I was told about this when I set up the appointment).
One suggestion I have for this company is that they email a list of what to expect and how to prepare the room for the re-surfacing. Had I known the toilet needed to be removed, I could have done it myself. I was surprised the room needed to be "sealed" for at least 24 hours. I had no idea of the tasks necessary to return the bathroom to normal use.
The tub is beautiful!

Update: 6/14/2012 Removing the taped off areas around the tub wasn't difficult, but attention to detail using a razor blade with intense. Putting the toilet back was complicated by the fact that I needed to remove a bit of water from the tanks. I decided to replace the tank kit.... the directions provided on the box were not sufficient to do the job correctly. I went to www.onesmartgirl.com for complete and easy-to-understand directions. Now I need to caulk around the tub. Then the job will be complete. I am a do-it-yourselfer, and I don't consider this any easy completion for someone who isn't handy around the house.

"I agree that the estimate was higher than estimated...The cost to strip a tub is a hundred dollars. We didn't discuss with one another that the tub had been coated prior to arrival. The stripper costs around 40 dollars and adds an addition hour to hour and a half to the job...sorry for anything that was unclear. Thank you for the business... Patrick Madison the owner"

I had called several businesses to get quotes on installing a new water heater and the average cost was about $600.00 but when I talked with Patrick his quote was much lower. From the time he started the job until it was was finished he was very pleasant to work with. Job was performed very professionally and cleaned up after he finished the job. Final bill was what he quoted me. I would highly recommend him to family and friends and plan to use his services in the future!

Madison's is there when they say they will be. They do what they say they are going to do. They clean up each day when finished. The price did not change - there were no 'surprises'!

I called Madison's for an estimate to fix the dent in our tub. I talked with him on the phone a couple of times and explained how the dent got there, were it was, the approximate size, and that we had removed shower doors and there were small holes in the surround from the screws. He asked the age of the unit and we talked about touch up paint verse spraying the hole unit. In the end he quoted me a price just over $300 for the repairs by phone. He was going to fix the to the dent, fill all the screw holes, and spray the whole unit so the tub would look brand new when he was done. All I needed to do was prepare the unit by scrubbing it with steel wool and dish soap, which I did. In doing that though I discovered three more small cracks by the drain. I left him a note indicating were the cracks were because I was not going to be there on the day of the repair. When Madison's arrived my wife said they went right to work, drilling out the screw holes, the dent, and cracks preparing the unit for repair. He told my wife that it would be additional $100 to fix the cracks I had found. As one worker was prepping the unit the one I had spoke with on the phone presented my wife with a bill for $722.25. She shocked and refused to sign the bill. She called me at work to tell me the repair was more than double what we expected to pay. I had her hand the phone to him and I asked him why the repair price had changed. He told me there was no $300 repair job. He told me he could stop working, go do another job, and I could think about it and come back. As I sat on the phone with him weighing the cost of repair verses replacing the unit I asked him what was the guaranty that his company offered with this repair. He told me it would last another 15 years. I then asked him "so if I have any problems with the repair you would come out and repair it for free?" He then started rattling off a list of things that weren't covered and I told him that we would not be using his company. He then told me, that they would stop work and I can keep using the tub the way it is." He had a snide tone to his voice when he said that and when I got home I found out why. In doing the prep work on the tub, before presenting the bill they had removed the fiberglass surface from the dent area leaving a 2-3" opening in our tub. There is no way the tub could ever be used again with what they had done to it and he knew it. Before leaving he wrote on the bill job stopped by homeowner, the date, and the time and wanted my wife to sign it. She refused and told him the only way she would sign it was if he wrote there was no charge. He did and they left.
Response from Madison's Resurfacing LLC
"First of all, Madison's Resurfacing is the #1 resurfacinig company within a 125 miles of Cedar Rapids, Ia. We do on average 6 to 8 resurfaces a week. From cast iron Porcelain to fiberglass tub showers. Everyone who has ever had their tub done by Madison's know the name and know it well. When we arrive on a job, there is always a problem. That's why people call us. To take care of them, make sure things are correct and functioning properly. You can view our sites. We are also a licensed plumbing company. We are in and out of more that 500 plus homes a year. We know lots of people. Lots of people know us, and the type of professional environment we provide. To anyone reading this, they all know the price to coat a fiberglass tub shower unit is $575. Cut and dry, as long as it's clean when we arrive. We did NOT charge the member for cleaning, or for the work we performed. When we arrived at the member's house the tub was covered in soap scum. He didn't remember the lengthy conversation we had had about prepping the tub. After we scoured the areas we were going to repair before the resurface we were going to perform. Which is always $575. The repairs could have ran up to $300 dollars was the actual converstion. So $575 and $300 is $875 dollars. We noticed that the tub had fractures and spider web cracks all over it. These cannot be resurfaced, they will simply refracture in use if not repaired. It was one of the worst units I had seen in a long time. So after the initial conversation of $575 and $300 for repairs I only charged him $700 dollars. For a small dime size repair it costs $150 to $200 dollars on average. He had 10 plus repairs ranging from dollar bill size to dime size. That's why we were there, we didn't damage his tub. The member called us to solve his problems. The damage he had caused, no us. So I figured they would be happy by cutting down the price so they could get the best deal. But in reality there were over 10 repairs we were going to attempt to do for $150 dollars. Since I knew he had agreed to resurface the entire unit. If you don't resurface the entire unit, you need to color match all those repairs. The price could get out of hand and I don't conduct business that way. I like to take the most economical approach for a customer while still maintaining professionalism. If you resurface over top of a fracture and you step on the fracture it will refracture. Then who's to blame??? It would be me. We went directly in to the home after being invited. We layed drop cloths from the entry to the bathroom and commenced to do our job. I went out and made out the bill after seeing the tub in such disrepair. I was hoping for a smile and a thank you. Instead she seemed a little disturbed when we initially walked in. She called the member on the phone as he was yelling over her voice and then at me complaining of the price we agreed on. I simply said I can leave if this is stressfull for you guys and by that time my associate had done his job. He dremeled out the tub for repairs. So if you would like to see how and entire repair is completed please go to our website to take a look. One repair isn't the problem, when there are multiple repairs all over the unit it would have shiny spots all over the unit. It would look horrible. It appeared that the members had some communication problems between them. Marriage counceling isn't our business, I shouldn't have to referee when I go to work. So we left. The tub stayed the way it was and I heard no responce from then on. I asked him if there was anything I could do and he said basically get out of my house. I was limited to what his responce was and couldn't help this particular person. We do repairs every day. We talk to people from Illinois to Des Moines and this guy was one of the most disrespectful, agressive people I have met. I am so glad and appreciative to have been gifted with the customers I usually perform work for. Thank you very much."
