Marshall Construction from Conway, SC was the worst experience I have ever had. I have filed a law suit against Marshall Construction for Breach of Contract. James Marshall Flom was rude, unprofessional, unreliable, and never completed the job that I paid for. I paid him over $20,000.00 and he refused to complete the work. I have his signed estimates and contract and all receipts showing that I paid him exactly what he asked for (with a remaining balance of $250.00 that was to be paid upon completion). I gave him $1,000.00 one day and the next day he asked for more. When I asked what happened to the $1,000.00 I just gave him he said he had to use in on another job with another client. He would not return any of my calls, then finally called me screaming and using abusive language. He screamed that he went over budget with me and stated "I am done". He obviously does not know how to estimate his jobs then stops when he feels he has spent enough with you. I am the second report that has experienced this with Marshall Construction. He was NEVER on time, not once. He would say he would be here on a certain day then he may or may not show up. He was extremely rude, unreliable, and unprofessional. I paid him for a custom wood front door to be built and installed that I never received, steps for my back porch that he never built, a bathroom floor he supposedly repaired from water damage that is still damaged and a danger to walk on, for duct work under my house that was to be blocked off and it was never done. I must now pay another contractor to do all of this when I already paid Marshall Construction. PLUS I have to pay an attorney. He threatens that his family is "full of attorneys" (retired lawyer and retired judge) and that he will take everyone to court. Since this has happened he has sent me several text messages on my phone threatening me and telling me I was "white trash" and that he has signed an arrest warrent on me for Felony Extortion. There were other nasty messages I chose not to repeat due to the obscenity of the messages. I would NOT recommend Marshall Construction to anyone. UPDATE: 3-7-2011 In my posession I have the signed contract from Marshall Construction, on his letter head, the signed estimates, and copies of all payments made by myself to Marshall Construction. I also have a Certificate of Completion, on Marshall Construction letter head, signed and dated by James Flom, stating "Since the signing of this contract more improvements and job change orders have occurred. These total charges have accumulated to $ 20,242.57. This document as well as the accompanying hand written Marshall Construction invoice and your own personal bank information is your absolute and definitive proof that you have paid these sums of monies totaling $ 20,242.57". Written and signed by James Flom of Marshall Construction. Proof I have paid all monies requested by Marshall Construction. I can and will supply this document upon request. I don't think there is a need to say much more. I have not signed this document, as the job is not completed. Please search "Hardwood floors" on Angies List and read the updated report on Marshall Construction right after mine, on pg 2. It is quite similar to mine. I have faxed Angie's List a copy of the police report I have filed on James Flom (Marshall Construction) at their request.
Response from Marshall Construction
"This client was a prime example of what is wrong with sites like Angie's list. This woman took advantage of the service to extort my company for free and unpaid work. She threatened a bad report unless we did what she wanted, for the price she wanted. Marshall Construction does not work for free and we will not pander to threats. We are currently pressing criminal charges against her for Extortion as well as Forgery. She has typed her own contract for garage work that is not even on my company letterhead and did not come from my office. We are also suing her for slander due to her false Angie's list reports. She was completely rude to myself, my employees and threw regular temper tantrums demanding more than what was outlined in my company's contract. Every bit of work done for her was inspected and passed by the Georgetown County's building department. As to the text messages where she said I threatened her; as a business owner it is my right and legal duty to let her know of her pending criminal charges as well as the law suite for slander. I have a smart phone which has saved all 143 text messages she sent me over the course of six months. It was she who was out of line. These text messages have been transcribed and will be turned into the courts in preparation for the slander suit. Between the two criminal charges ,extortion and forgery, as well as the civil slander suit, I am confident of assured legal victory. I have also been assured by Angie's List upon winning this suite her bogus report as well as this response will be removed. I hope she amends her report again for each time she does its another count of slander for which she has to pay $7,500.00. So far she has racked up two counts and I have no problem taking her money. She did not pay for the majority of the work my company performed, so at least this way I can recoup some of my losses. Everything I have written is true, and has to be, as it will now be at the scrutiny of the courts."

The counter top had a scratch it in which needed to be repaired. He got a kit, which looked like bondo. The repair was not professionally done. He filled the scratch and everything around it with rust colored bondo. Counter top is gold. There is also a chip on the edge of the counter top. Said he charges $30 a pair to hang shutters. One pair he measured for was the wrong size and had to re-order another. Price for 2 shutters, one of which I can't use $110.00 Cost to take the one pair down and put the other pair up $100.00. Cabinet door is out of alignment with the opposite door. Have a laminate board that is not seated into the one next to it. I asked him about a senior discount and he said I do not do anything with Angie's List anymore.
Response from Marshall Construction
"This member made a mistake in ordering her shutters which had to be replaced. When she was billed for the repair she did not want to pay. This is a common occurance with Angie's list members. Marshall Construction will no longer do anymore work for Angie's list members. They do not have money and most are ignorant fools."

James was very polite and professional when I talked to him about going out and taking a look at the property. He called me back very quickly for a quote and description of the repairs that were to be done. He was there within 3 days to do the work and finished that day. The price was very reasonable and he did not try haggle me into repairing the entire roof, which prior to me calling him, two other roofers told me the entire roof must be replaced. I knew the entire roof did not need to be replaced at the time. James is a very professional and trusworthy contractor that I would recommend to anyone.

I?m not a visual guy but the things he is doing are absolutely gorgeous. He built the wall unit from scratch it is all handmade. He is taking the kitchen cabinets out and rebuilding them from scratch. My wife is doing the supervising but he is really good to work with. People I have talked to all say the same thing which is that he follows through. He?s an ex-Ranger so he has the Ranger mentality which is really good. My wife interviewed eight contractors before picking him. The quality is hard to calculate because everything isn?t quite finished yet. We are planning on using him to put in a swimming pool in about five years. Update: 10/1/10 Nothing has been finished. The four season room hasn't been finished. The floors haven't been finished. The kitchen is a disaster area. I sent him an email and have called and left voicemails asking when the rest of the work was going to be finalized, and I haven't heard anything back from him. Last month he told me he had injured his hand and wouldn't be able to complete the work. He told me he was going to send over one of his crew with the cabinet doors he had completed, and they never showed up.
Response from Marshall Construction
"In response to this member’s comment, I would like all Angie’s List members to keep in mind that this is one negative rating out of many more positive and almost perfect ratings. I made every effort to complete all work contracted for this job. It should be noted that the clients made constant extra work requests, consulted with my subcontractors without my knowledge, and generally made this job more prolonged, difficult, and expensive than was originally contracted. It should also be noted that they never paid for any extra work performed. I had to inform them that due to all of these issues, and lack of payment for any extra work demanded, that I was resigning from there job. This job was left completed, save for cabinet doors in there kitchen, which I was working on when I did indeed suffer a severe injury to 3 fingers on my right hand. When the member was made aware of this, he demanded the cabinet doors installed immediately. This was yet another reason for resignation. I hope that this report does not wrongly persuade potential clients. I am almost fully healed and Marshall Construction is still going strong."

We had gotten about 5 estimates from different contractors. Although James was not the cheapest, we were so impressed with his manner, his professionalism, and his desire to work with us that we went ahead and hired his company. We could not have made a better choice! These gentlemen work as if they were working on their own projects! They arrived on time, went right to work, and were very pleasant and accomodating to my wife and our 2 small dogs while I was at work. After seeing how hard they worked and how professional they were (not to mention the outstanding quality of their work), we asked them to do some other general contractor things around the house such as changing a large light in the kitchen, installing some crown moldings, and painting a hallway. They were thrilled to help and jumped right in...We will recommend Marshall Construction to anyone asking and I carry one of their business cards in my wallet so that I can pass it on to people! As a matter of fact, they are coming back to do some concrete work for us next month!

We couldn't be happier with the final results. James and his crew did an outstanding job and was always in contact with us and worked hard to complete the job in a timely manner. He certainly can be trusted and we will most definitely contact him again for any home improvements we may want to do in the future.

Very nice and friendly , but a little bit unprofessional. They made a big mess, which is kind of understandable, the new hardwood floor got terrible scratched. But the worst thing is, that a whole year later: the job is not finished, after several calls to remind him. There is still a problem with the insulation of the fireplace insert (hot air coming in in summer, cold air coming in in winter), there are bubbles and scratches and cracks in the wall surrounding the fireplace. The fireplace mantle still has only the base coat of paint, and, and, and.......He promised a couple of times to come back and finish the job, but that didn't happen until now. That is why we are updating our statement here.

This was the best experience we've had with a contractor. James was very professional, knowledgeable, and pleasant to work with. He promised a price and when he would be out to do the job, called to say he was on his way, and completed the job. He is very meticulous about his work and stands back to inspect. If one thing needs tweaking, he's back on the ladder to make it perfect. We will be contacting him again to put a roof/screen room on our back patio. We will definitely refer him to our friends and neighbors.

His crew took off the old shingles and put on the new roof in a day. There were no stray shingles in the garden or nails in the driveway. They cleaned up very well. We were pleased with the color and style match he made with the existing roof.

James has also installed my hardwood floors and a tile bathroom floor and again both were done very well. I am very pleased with his work and the professional manner in which he does business. I will never have anyone else do work in my home!

Excellent - James was on time, had good workers, and cleaned up after himself. The one day he couldn't come as planned he called and told us and returned the very next day. It was a pleasure to work with him. The quality of the work is outstanding and we would even be willing to send pictures or let a prospect see his work.Since then he has done some roof repair and he's going to rebuild our brick walkway. I tust him enough I didn't get a quote on the walkway.
