"Customer's issue was on a Saturday. I spoke with him over the phone to try and help, and ultimately adjusted my schedule to be there Monday morning. Checked in with rep to inquire if there was any possible warranty coverage. I arrived and started troubleshooting-keeping in touch with the rep. I explained to him that we had two choices - replace the existing assembly with new or maintenance and clean the existing assembly. The past I have had 85% success rate but either choice had no guarantee. He wanted to use new parts so I began searching for the assembly. I searched Missouri and Illinois via phone/laptop. The assembly was not available anywhere locally. The rep said he could order one directly from the manufacturer but it could take 1-2 weeks to receive. I relayed this info to the customer and he said they could not go without hot water for that length of time. I told him I would try to service the existing assembly because we didn't have a choice. I offered not to charge him for the service if it didn't work. It did, however, and they have been enjoying hot water ever since - 22 days. Even though my time exceeded it, I only charged them the $450 that I originally quoted him for the maintenance service. He was very pleased to have hot water again. It states on the invoice that he signed that parts would need to be ordered if the problem returned. I checked in with him the next day to see if the heater was still working. He responded that the heater was working fine and thanked me again. Apparently his wife did not approve of the way he handled the situation - 22 days later, even though everything was still working properly. She called three weeks later asking me what had transpired, because she wasn't there. I explained the course of events and told her I would be happy to send her the invoice where it clearly states what was done and parts may have to be ordered. Neither one will return my phone calls."
