Work with smoothly, even with weather not always cooperating and a few staffing changes throughout the duration of the project. Jason and his crew kept us up to date with progress, rough estimates on % done and remaining, and any delays with material or labor. We also expanded scope and did slight design tweaks through the process, which Jason was accommodating of and provided revised estimates ahead of starting any new work. Provided pictures are one year out after beds have been expanded and planted in.

This company did a very poor job, overcharged, and treated me disrespectfully. Don't hire!

I am a female senior citizen, near retirement but still working, self-employed in a financial consulting business for over 30 years. This summer I had major abdominal surgery, and while I was at home recovering I witnessed the following problems. My husband witnessed some of it as well, when he was at home taking care of me. All of this is documented in emails to and from Nagas.

Issue #1, smoking around gasoline: I observed an employee of Nagas smoking a cigarette while filling a mower from a gas can. This could have resulted in a fire or explosion. It also exposed Nagas to serious legal liability. I reported to Nagas. Jason replied they had a policy of no smoking near the equipment, and he would tell the crew supervisor (Kyle) to deal with it. The next week the same employee, in full view of Kyle, leaned on the truck bed in which there were gas cans, smoking again. He smoked an entire cigarette there before he went to work. I reported it again, and asked that this employee not be sent to our property anymore because I feared he would cause a fire or explosion. Jason says they fired him after I reported the second smoking incident.

Issue #2, property damage: They ignored several requests to stop blowing grass clippings and gravel onto our house and barn. These are both wooden structures. Damp grass build-up on ledges causes rot. Flying gravel mars the windows and the paint. First we made the request by phone to Jason, asking that they aim the mowers' discharge chute away from the buildings when they mowed up close. They did not comply. A second request by email was also ignored. So we then asked that they clean the mess off the buildings when they were done. They did comply with that request, using leaf blowers to blow the debris off the buildings. They could have avoided this extra work by simply pointing the mower's chute away from the buildings in the first place.

We had new screens installed on our porch in 2014. The porch has a shelf around the outer edge, inside the screen, on which we place potted flowers, small items of décor and a temperature sensor. Nagas blew these items off the shelf repeatedly with their leaf blowers, damaging them. I repotted the plants several times, and bought a new temperature sensor system to replace the damaged one. Also, they made small tears in the screens by swinging the blowers around recklessly while blowing the grass off the outside of the porch. We actually witnessed them hitting the screen with the blower.

In May when only 2 screens had been damaged. Jason offered to pay to replace them. At that time I was having a serious health crisis and told Jason we were too overwhelmed to deal with the screens. However, Nagas continued to cause even more damage to the screens throughout the summer despite my frequent requests that they desist. In the end, they had damaged 7 screens.

Finally I asked them to stop blowing around the porch because of the damage they were doing. I said we'd clean up their grass clippings ourselves so nothing else would get damaged. But they did not comply with that request either - we observed them blowing around the porch on two occasions after that. They also blew debris toward my car.

Issue #3, no references provided for hardscaping project: Early in the season we got an estimate from Jason for building a retaining wall and some landscaping work. We asked for references from other customers. The only reference Jason gave was our (cranky) neighbor, whose wall was built by another landscaping company, not by Nagas. One of Jason's employees formerly worked for the company and helped build that wall. We were aware that the wall was faulty and had to be repaired shortly after it was built. We asked Jason for references for work that was actually done by Nagas, but he did not respond.

Issue #4, attitude: Jason chastised me via email on more than one occasion. The first time, Kyle told me there would be a discount if we would mow a large area of our property ourselves instead of having them do it. I mentioned this discount to the Jason. He said it wasn't the Kyle's place to talk about discounts, and that I should not be talking to him about it. Since then we've put all communication in emails to Jason instead of talking to Kyle.

In mid-September when the grass growth rate was slowing down, I asked if we could reduce the mowing frequency to every other week. Jason replied by saying he was "sorry" but they "do not provide every-other-week mowing". The previous year, they reduced mowing frequency in the fall without being asked.

In that same email, I asked (for the second time, since the first request was ignored) that they stop using the blowers around the porch because they were doing too much damage. He replied that I complain too much. He also said that our mowing schedule was too hard to for him manage. It seemed that he was resigning from working for us, since he also suggested that we might be happy with some other company. When I asked him to clarify whether or not he was actually resigning, his wife Lori took over for him and things went more smoothly. They mowed every other week as requested until October 2nd.

Jason heard from us often from us because the problems were never corrected. Had he remedied the problems, the "complaining" would have stopped. There were 2 reports about 2 smoking incidents, 3 requests that they stop blowing grass and gravel on the buildings, 2 complaints about property damage, and 2 requests that they stop using the blowers near the screens due to the repeated damages. These are reasonable concerns that any property owner would have.

I asked Jason to rescind our final bill in lieu of his paying for new screens. I told him I had composed a draft review for Angie's List and explained that if he would make good on his offer to compensate us for the damage we would be sure to give him credit for that in the review. In response he accused me of blackmail. He vowed to contact our previous mowing company to find out if I complained to them as well. I inferred from this that he meant to either frighten me off or to label me as a chronic complainer in his response. He also sent emails to my husband, complaining about what a complainer I was! If you look at other recent reviews, you will see that he accused another dissatisfied customer of slander. Professionalism is seriously lacking here. The professional response would be to solve the problems instead of hurling accusations at the unhappy customer. Slanderer. Blackmailer. Complainer.

Outcome: Jason's final invoice to us totaled $405. Our contractor's written estimate for replacing the damaged screens totaled $525. We sent the estimate to Jason and proposed calling it even, although we will lose $120 when the screens are repaired. At first Jason refused our offer. Then on 10/29/15 he said he would send Kyle (the supervisor who actually did some of the damage himself) to repair our screens for free. We said no, because Nagas is not a construction company and because, as we explained to Jason, we prefer to deal with contractors we can trust.

I cannot, unfortunately, join in the rave reviews this company gets. Let me explain in detail.

Last fall I moved into a new home, and the builder did a crappy job with the lawn. In the spring, I paid Nagas $4,000 for what was supposed to be a fresh start with lots of topsoil, plus grass seed and straw. The topsoil cost was double the initial informal estimate Jason provided in person (which he later said was based on last year's prices). To be fair, the $800/load price was reflected on the written estimate I agreed to. But the point is, this lawn was a substantial investment. (And Nagas can be a bit aggressive about seeking quick payment.)
I received no instructions whatsoever on caring for the new lawn, weed control, fertilizing, when to mow, how much to water, or what to expect as far as progress during the first season. I also got the impression that Jason and his company were perhaps stretched too thin.
Five weeks later, my yard looked like an abandoned lot. The new grass was, at best, patchy. The front yard was choked with all sorts of exotic looking weeds, much of which I now know was hard-to-eradicate nutsedge. There were all sorts of bare spots. I brought my concerns to Jason, who claimed the new grass was progressing as well as possible given the hot weather in early spring. Jason's people came out (at no charge) to spray and overseed. The grass finally seemed to pick up in quantity, but it doesn't look anything close to thriving. It's still thin, pale, and rather patchy, and often has a yellow/brown cast despite a wet summer and regular watering.
Since then, I have used Nagas for biweekly mowing at a rate of $50 per visit. Several times the mowing crews cut landscape lighting wires (this stopped after I brought it to their attention) and left big muddy ruts (which are now bare patches) from their large mowing equipment.
On June 28, I alerted Jason that there was a serious weed problem that needed to be addressed. A few days later he informed me that he had sprayed but "may need to spray again." He also mentioned he would seed again in the fall. If this spraying indeed happened (I wasn't billed), it had no effect whatsoever. Nutsedge, I've come to learn through the research I've had to do on my own, just laughs at ordinary herbicides. Jason's emails referred to spraying for "broadleaf." So I now assume he didn't understand the problem he was dealing with.
It's now August, and I've become alarmed that the front yard is being overtaken with nutsedge, a weed that's ugly and very difficult to eradicate. Today, I wrote Jason about this. His advice was to wash his hands of the matter and suggest I call Scott's or Trugreen. I have all the emails documenting the above-described interactions.
I consider this unsatisfactory for an A-rated professional landscaping company. I had assumed that, being a small local business where you deal with the owner himself, Nagas sought to form ongoing client relationships. To my mind, that involves customer education, monitoring, and followup when they've done an expensive installation and I've brought problems to their attention. By referring to future spraying and seeding, Jason led me to believe that my lawn was under his ongoing care and concern, not just a one-off job. His crew is here every other week. Jason is supposed to be the lawn care expert, not me. Up until now, Jason has responded quickly when I've expressed concerns. But the point is that those actions have been completely ineffective, and he obviously wasn't monitoring the problem as I believe he should have once it was brought to his attention in late June, to try to assure a successful resolution (i.e., healthy, weedless grass). As a result, I am left with an anemic lawn, an ugly mess of nutsedge, and a threat to my $4000 grass investment.
Jason's response today -- "My guys that mow have no formal training except for mowing.... I do not just drive around and look at yards unless I have been asked to check on something. I think using one of the larger companies that specialize in lawn weeds is your best bet." -- shows he is washing his hands of the problem.
If Nagas is not going to provide customer education and ongoing maintenance and support, then they should not be in the lawn-installation business to begin with, or it should made clear at the outset that once the seed is in the ground, the customer is on his own and needs to hire Scott's pronto. In my case, the expectations and responsibilities were left ambiguous. I accept some responsibility for this. But on all these facts -- especially the ineffective response to specific problems and lack of follow through to see that the problem was resolved, i.e. that the weeds were under control -- an "A" rating and "super service award" certainly cannot be justified.

"Your review says it all. Giving us a bad review because we did everything that we could and when we couldn't referred you to someone that could. People that have read your review have commented on how they would be grateful if a contractor admitted they did not know how to do something instead of wasting their money. You were happy with everything we did until we weren't qualified to treat a certain weed in your yard. I am surprised as a law professor that you would post so many slandering lies about us. One example is when you were going out of town for the weekend and I told you about irrigation timers that you could hook to your hose while out of town. I am sorry you are unhappy with the work we did and I am sorry I couldn't offer any more free services to prevent this review. Ironically almost all of our new clients that have read your review have said that it didn't make sense to them that you would be upset because I wasn't qualified to treat your yard and that you would expect this. The other comments we get are about the fact that I didn't check your yard all the time. If I charged you for all the free services we did to try and keep you happy we would have to add on another $860."

I had another landscaper out to grade my back lot so that I could plant a lawn. The other guy left a giant hole and big ruts in the yard and left with all my money. Nagas came out to fix what the other guy did and finish the job. They removed several large root balls leftover from fallen trees, dug out some grape vines and ivy, and graded the whole lot to make it ready for grass seed. They ended up doing it in two sessions because of ground moisture and when the regular skid steer wouldn't work because of moisture Jason arranged to have a track loader finish the job. I didn't pay for any of the job until it was all complete. I am now ready for grass seed in time for planting season. I am very happy with the work they did and the cost!
Nagas service is completely dependable. They arrive as expected and do an excellent job. Our front yard has an oddly placed bit of grass separate from the rest of the lawn that is easy to miss. When I contacted Nagas to say that it had been missed, the mowers were quickly back the same day, and it has not been missed again. We have used Nagas also for snow removal, fall and spring cleaning of our yard, gutter cleaning, tree trimming, stump removal, mulching, and weed treatment. All jobs were done when expected and as expected. It is such a relief to have a company that is so professional and reliable.

I'm very pleased with Nagas; each time that I have had a complaint/concern such as the cutting was uneven or the weed eating was too short, they have been responsive. I plan to hire them to mulch my flower beds later this summer and will add to my review after that.

I have not used a mowing service before so do not know what others charge, but the price seems reasonable to me.

We inherited a LOT of landscaping from the previous owners of our house. While it is beautiful, it has gotten very overgrown and was in need of some major TLC. Jason came and walked through our property with us and discussed ideas for cleaning it up and getting it back in shape. He is really knowledgeable about the plants and what works and doesn't work in the area. This round of work was for the clean up effort, and we plan to have them maintain the landscaping for us in the future. They also will be coming back in about a month to work on some drainage problems we have in our backyard. We have been very pleased with the work done so far, and have already recommended them to friends in need of landscaping services.
Jason McCord, Nagas business owner, had his crew here on time on agreed morning and prepped the areas for replacement trees while he was at the nursery picking up the new trees. By the time he arrived, the men had everything ready for the trees to be planted. In no time it seemed the four trees were in the ground and the rest of the planting of other smaller plants could be done. We had a couple of 30 foot birch trees we wanted removed and after lunch that began. No problem with those and once they were down, all of the trunk and branches were loaded and gone. When the cleanup was done we now have a beautiful landscape once again. Our gratitude to a job well done
"Hello [Member name removed], I wanted to thank you for bringing your dissatisfaction with our mowing services to my attention via the review process on Angie's List. Now that I know there is a problem, I can do my best to fix it. Please let me know what items my crew is not moving during their visits. While moving items in the yard is not a service we normally include in mowing, going above and beyond the expected is what has made Nagas able to enjoy 5+ seasons of business in Bloomington and my goal is for every customer to experience that type of service. I hope to hear from your soon regarding the items and what we can do better. And please always feel free to contact me or Jason via telephone or email whenever there is an issue. We always try to be prompt in addressing things of this nature with our crew. Best regards, Lori McCord Nagas Landscape Design, LLC 3649 N. We use Jason Mccord from Nagas. Its just normal pricing. They just did a good job, that's all I know. They knew what they were going and were polite. They were dressed nice, I know that sound stupid but they didn't look like bums like how some look. They were very well neat, clean people. When you're living in a neighborhood and its a nice neighborhood, you'd want the to look nice too. We checked out a lot of different places and I know they were in a normal range but we just went ahead and went with them because we've seen their work. Its beautiful and I would absolutely use them again.

They submitted a plan. I had no clue what I wanted or needed in my spot and relied on them to make the professional decisions. The weather put their arrival date back to get to me. When they did come, the owners that I met with came initially but left the job to a crew. I came to the crew a couple of times to talk initially and ask about landscape fabric, etc and then to offer drinks. And when they finished, they left without a good bye, this is what you do (when to water, how much, this is your *___* and how to care for it...nothing. So I was a bit disappointed in that. Also, I specifically said I needed dwarf material close to the house so I hope I get that as the years go on. The product did not have a good fall-leaves started falling off early and nothing ever bloomed. Was told it was due to the late installation, mid summer.
"Sorry you weren't happy with our work. I was there for the entire day except when I went to purchase the mulch for your job which took almost an hour and a half because of where you live. All of the plants we installed bloom from spring to mid summer because of the shaded bed which we discussed in an email. If you would have called me I would have been happy to walk you through proper watering of new plant material. I hope you enjoy all the wonderful blooms this spring and summer also if its not raining please water."
