They did a horrible job. I had to stop the progress of the work because of big nails popping out. The floor was not stained correctly as well. I had to find another company to finish the work. Very unprofessional. They damaged my garage moving materials.
Response from MecTec Inc
"The wood supplied by customer chose was low grade. The stain customer chose and we applied. He did not like the color, we then redid and let him choose a different stain. Customer only paid deposit even after we redid to a different stain he chose. He never paid for full job only half and wood and stain were supplied or chosen by customer."

The company did not provide sufficient guidance on the amount of material needed, when to order fixtures etc.. This led to delays in time to complete the project and over spend for us in terms of expedited shipping cost and excess materials purchased. GC refused to fix a problem that rendered the job incomplete. However the owner was very responsive and had the problem corrected.
If it had not been for the aforementioned problems I would have given them a better grade.
I waited this long to give the review because I wanted to see how the job held up. It's been over a year and so far so good, except for some of the grout coming out at the floor seams every thing is working fine.

Initially the crew showed up nearly every day for the first month, and did the demo work and some of the wood work, and the bathroom floor tile, installed the header, and the electrical and plumbing. We noticed problems and had difficulty getting a representative to come and see that we were seeing needed to be re-done. I was told by Shelly they don't usually do that. Hard to believe. They wanted us to pay the 90% at that point and we did but only if they agreed the work was nowhere near 90% done, and that many things they had done were done improperly and needed to be remedied, and that they would finish promptly. I insisted that Marcello, who I think may be the only other employee of the company, and who had done the estimate, come and see for himself the problems, which he did and agreed needed to be re-done. Some of the work that we pointed out at that time that needed to be done included re-doing the window sills--they had installed them too high so that you couldn't get your fingers under the window lip to open the windows. The bathroom floor tile was uneven --some tiles higher than others and the grout lines were very uneven. They used Romex for the electrical which is against code and ignored our emails about it, and never replaced them. They covered over electrical outlets with sheetrock and left them live hidden in the wall. They never did the three stage skim coating of the walls. All throughout I sent Shelly pictures of the problems, and countless emails--all I got was a run around. I have all the documentation to prove it--I am so glad I mainly used email. I have hundreds of pictures. I asked to speak with the owner several times--I got no response. Typical emails with Shelly would go like this: Shelly says the walls are finished and ready for paint. I then say my husband was at the apartment and there are circled areas on the walls. Shelly then replies, that's because these are areas not finished...
After that payment they didn't come back, and finally after a month we gave them a deadline to finish what they could, which was everything but installing the cabinets, and the shower tile (which couldn't be done until they repaired the poor installation of the floor tile). Even with the deadline they only worked about a day and a half more--and that work included using the wrong grout in the kitchen, which they first said was because we didn't supply the grout, and then when we showed them photos of the grout in the apartment, they said they didn't use that type of grout. They also finally installed the closet doors, but cut them so unevenly they looked ridiculous, and left big gaps between them. At some point in that last week Shelly said they hadn't come back because we didn't have the materials they needed--and I pointed out as I had previously many times the long list of things they should have completed and that we were only missing the kitchen cabinets and the shower tile, and that what we had been asking them to finish were the long list of other items.
There was never any apology about the poor work done, which was the least they should have done. I have countless emails and never was there any acknowledgment. We finally terminated the contract and had the apartment inspected--literally everything they did had to be re-done. The waterproof membrane under the shower tiles had cuts in it so it would have leaked. All the plumbing had to re-done--there weren't proper shut-off valves, none of the pipes were attached to the wall, and so much more. The kitchen floor tiles weren't installed with any mortar on them--they popped right off the floor and the backs of them were as clean as when we bought them. Not one single window or door casing or the closets were installed level and plumb. Everything was crooked and uneven. The header they installed to support a ten foot section of wall that was removed was constructed to look like a support but was only made of 2 x 3s to nail the sheetrock to so it looked like a header. We are lucky the roof didn't collapse. Frankly, we are lucky we found out all the problems before someone was hurt or damages to our neighbors were incurred.
Update: Addressing MecTec's responses: "portion of contract paid was for the work completed"--we paid them a little over $27,000 and had a balance of a little over $2700. The work not done:
3-stage skim coating, baseboard and shoe moldings, installation of outlet, installation of bathroom saddle, installation of bathroom fixtures (e.g. toilet, vanity, medicine cabinet, shower body), installation of closet shelves, preparing all wood trim for painting, installing door trim on inside of bathroom door, installation of kitchen cabinets, appliances and backsplash, installation of shower wall tile and grouting, installation of shower window surround, niche, and curb. Certainly more than a few hours work. According to MecTec's response, all of that work would have cost only around $2700! As far as our asking for changes during the initial negotiation and subsequently--yes we did--on a total renovation of around 30k, you would expect that. But the number of changes/additions was under 10 things--not much for such a big project. Meetings? We were at the apartment 2-3 times a week. "MecTec never said no to return and fix issues..." And never said yes, but more importantly never came back to fix the problems! We gave them almost one month to make repairs and finish the work, and they did virtually nothing--leaving us no choice but to terminate the contract.

Response from MecTec Inc
"Portion of contract paid was for the work completed. There is still a balance that we will not pursue even though they decided to end contract while we were onsite working on the repairs. Throughout the initial negotiations of work and the job customer changed requests of scope of work constantly and all requests were with workers and not office as requested by contract. The first time they contacted office for issues was after the skim coating and majority of work was done and they said they had been talking to the workers the whole time with their requests. A meeting was scheduled to start to see what needed to be resolved - they still had to have materials ordered so Mectec wanted to come in all at once to resume work and they would not come in while we were on site but after which caused delays and issues with scheduling. Mectec never said no to return and fix issues or go over issues - at times we were on site and requested them present and they would not be or did not see the need. We requested materials that were not delivered while we were working. We tried to emphasize that we could not go in for a few hours at a time and needed to work contentiously. Some of the issues they complained about we done as Mectec saw fit - skim coating was done multiple time and as needed for each wall. Durock is waterproof sheetrock/cement board and is what is used for wet wall areas not green board. For the sills there was 2 that was agreed to replace and we started prepping for paint. At the end they decided to terminate contract while we were repairing issues as requested. They decided to go with other company and once someone else comes in we cannot come in for repairs or warranty."

There was a lot of responsiveness initially. Roberto was the foreman on the job. There were 2-3 guys working on the basement level apartment in our house M-F for about 6-8 weeks. We had tenants moving in and mec tec was always aware of our deadline. In fact, Roberto stated they would complete the job well before the deadline. Their contracted stated the same. However toward the end when the job wasn't completed the workers just stopped showing up. We were getting a lot of lies and run around rom Roberto that someone was coming "tomorrow" etc and no one would show up. Then finally someone we've never seen before would come and do something shotty like put finish on a door without erasing the pencil marks first... It was clear that Roberto and his main crew moved on to another job without finishing the details on our place. Overall the finishing is not good. One of the main issues was in the bathroom where the light, medicine cabinet, sink faucet and sink are all asymmetrical. The set up in this bathroom required very detailed calculating because the faucet couldn't move from its original position. Everything should have been aligned with it which they failed to do. The medicine cabinet also ended up being extremely difficult to set in. For this mec tec charged us $600 more. Ok fine. We had all the materials for a very long time so there was no reason for them to not line these things up correctly. If you ask me, it's pretty awful attention to detail. The tiling in the bathroom was also done very poorly and to this day the tiles are cracking and mortar getting moisture in. Too bad. It was a very expensive and extensive job. I would not recommend this company.
The repairs in the interiors of the apartments were ok. The ones in the hallways were terrible. Huge marks where they had replastered over cracks or sheetrock tape. They painted over it, and it wasn't flat. The paint made it look worse. The paint color they found to match was pretty close, but they only painted the repaired areas rather than the whole part of the wall as agreed in the contract (not large walls!). They didn't clean up well at all and left paint dollops on the floors and on the front stoop. Took our Super 30 minutes to scrape it off. When I complained, they did come back to repair again. It looks better but not perfect. Marcello was good to work with but I don't know who did the actual work. The workers did a terrible job the first time. Beware.
Response from MecTec Inc
"When the walkthrough and quote were done customer was onsite. Customer was to supply paint but their super could not match and repainted a few times. They agreed to the match we did we explained NO GUARANTEE we could paint all walls and not just the repairs as in quote but the did not want to spend the money. NO ONE onsite to check in onnly when done then we came back for touch ups, they still did not want to pay for complete painting and after we finished touch ups did NOT PAY BALANCE DUE"

They were pretty responsive with the best price quote at first. That is why I chose them. Once the work began, however, their work quickly became substandard. I spoke with the general on this and noting ever got resolved. The end product was totally unacceptable. I now have to find another company to come in and undo their job and do it right.
Response from MecTec Inc
"We were hired by the member's husband who wanted to rent out 2 apt's and do an inexpensive touch up. Which is what we quoted for hence the cheapest price. After we started they wanted a 10,000 job for what was agreed a fast repair/uplift. We returned a few times to accommodate them with various requests. If the scope of work changes you need to pay for additional work but they did not want to. He was trying to make a profit on us and future tenants and get money from insurance."

I went with MecTec for my home renovation based on price and reviews on Angie's List. They were the cheapest quote that I got and although people often suggest not to go for the cheapest, I thought the project manager was very professional and shared the same vision as I did, so I ended up picking them.
Pros:
- Excellent customer service - they rework things until you're happy with them
- Very resourceful and have good solutions to work around existing limitations in the space
- Very reasonable cost
Cons:
- Depending on the worker, the attention to detail can sometimes be lacking. But they are willing to fix things to my satisfaction. It does require some micromanaging on your end
- Towards the end of the project it was a little hard to schedule time
Overall I had a good experience, though not stress-free. The new bath and new kitchen look great, and I'm pretty happy with the end product. Note that they are more of an execution contractor, as in you tell them what you want to do and they will make it work in the apartment. I did the designing and picked out all the cosmetic materials. I had to pay attention to a lot of the details and have some things redone or re-touched up. In my experience they're not full service, but also much cheaper than a real full-service one, and are just right for my needs. If you are willing to put in some time and effort to work with them on the planning and design, or you have a designer to supervise the project, then they are great.
t hot water. The water is never really hot and it usually calls for boiling water to do the dishes or pp. I was flooded out via Hurricane Sandy and needed my basement kitchen redone. The room was stripped to the studs and walls, ceiling and floors needed replacing. All appliances were gone. Mectec had a Super-deal. 13,999. for a 10 foot kitchen, cabinets, backsplash, granite countertop, tile floors, electrical and plumbing, in place. I bought the deal and work began in January 2013, Overall the work was done in a timely manner, some glitches were waiting for the appliances and the countertop. I had pot lights put in and switches added at my expense. We had a few plumbing issues and one still persist to this day. The kitchen faucet takes a looooong time to put out hot water and even then the water is barely warm. Never hot enough to clean grease; this means boiling water or putting them in the dishwasher. A total nuisance, have called to have it redone- no response.
Aside from the above cited issue all other aspects of the job went well and I am generally satisfied with the work.

The estimate was fair and listed exactly what was discussed and the amount of time it would take, and that timing was precise. Although we weren't informed about what time to expect them, they came at a reasonable time (around 9:00 a.m.) and finished within three hours on both days. The work is very neat and very professional; they work quickly, cleaned up behind themselves and did a great job. I would definitely use this company again and I highly recommend them.

It went okay. It was a four-hour deal and they allowed me to break it up into two hours for two days. That was helpful to me. I wasn't having big stuff done. There was nothing extraordinary about them. They were okay. They didn't charge me more than the big deal purchase. The guys that they sent I felt were new guys on the job. Though they did a good job, the guys were really wanting to please and made sure that they did everything right. They're not as quite as knowledgeable.
