Mission contacted us after we submitted a request via Angi for backyard landscaping work. After a few days of phone tag, we were able to talk to them and the owner, James Johnson, came out to our property on 6/24/21 and walked us through what work he would to improve the yard drainage and make the backyard space more useable. We agreed to have the work done and James provided an estimate amounting to $3,811.00. He required a 50% deposit which we paid through Venmo at his request. Mission was scheduled to come and complete the work, estimated by them to take one day, on 7/2/21 at 10:00AM but they texted us the morning of 7/2/21 to say they would need to reschedule for 7/6/21 due to rain. On Monday, 7/5/21, a woman from Mission named Leanna Marciano contacted us and asked us to pay the other 50% of the project cost as well. She said she was asking for the rest of the money because, "we are having issues with fraudulent activity with our bank and have to lock our account. This has put us in a tough position, as we use deposits to fund materials and equipment for each project. Due to this banking issue, we are requesting, if you're able, to pay the remaining balance on your project so that we can ensure that we can complete your job tomorrow, while we wait for the issues to be resolved" We told them we would not do that and they replied that was no problem and they would see us the following day. The following day, 7/6/21, they did not show up and texted us, "A client had an irrigation pipe burst and it's flooding their yard. We are stopping by there to get the water cut off and then we will be out your way." The vendor finally showed up at 1:55 PM with four workers and started to clear some remaining grass from the backyard. They then dug a shallow four foot long trench along the back fence line and removed a small amount of dirt along one of side of the fence line. This crew left a little after 6:00PM, and we texted the company asking what was going on as very little of the agreed upon work was done. They replied that they would be "wrapping up tomorrow. I don't have a time but it will be complete by the end of the day." The following day, 7/7/21 no one came to back and we texted the vendor to ask what was going on. We received no reply until 7/7/21 from the woman at Mission texted us to tell us they needed to get pea gravel which would not be ready until the following Wednesday and that they would return then to finish the work. I texted the owner on the evening of 7/13/21 to confirm what time he was coming on 7/14/21, and he replied that he would be out to our house at 10:00AM. On 7/14/21, Mission did not return and did not respond to texts or phone calls. At one point, their phone mailbox became full and not voicemail messages could be left for them. Later in the day, I texted the owner James Johnson that I wanted a refund. He replied "refund processed" but there was no refund issued to me via Venmo or any other means. I informed him that I did not get the refund, to which he replied, "please be patient, you will get an email soon with a transaction number." No such email ever came. I texted James again on Thursday stating I was going to file a complaint with the Virginia Attorney General's Office. He replied, "Refund takes 7 to 10 business days..." He also stated, "Also, your refund will be $975.50 Materials and time plus labor..." I replied that he did not do $930 worth of work and there were not materials that we received, and that I would require a breakdown of those costs. I have not heard from Mission since then and they do not respond to text messages or phone calls.
