About us

Montgomery Shade and Awning is a family owned and operated local business with over 40 years of industry experience in shades and awnings. We opened Montgomery Shade and Awning because there was a need in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC suburbs for a local ‘shade’ purveyor. We are proud to have been the first company to offer ‘European Retractable Awnings’ to this market and we continue to offer these and the more traditional tailored awnings to our customers. We have always enjoyed helping customers solve their sun and weather protection problems with attractive awning solutions using the best quality materials with skilled installation and follow up services. We take pride in providing our customers with finished products that include colorful storefronts and attractive outdoor living spaces that our customers enjoy. We believe that we set ourselves apart from our competitors because we only offer the premium products that provide better quality and durability. We are a small company that takes pride in craftsmanship, appealing and functional end results and happy, long term and repeat customers. As members of the Professional Awning Manufacturer's Association (since 1986) we strive to meet a code of ethics keeping the customer's needs first, with high quality products and excellent service. Offering retractable awning systems originating in Switzerland, Germany and the US with premium outdoor fabrics gives us the edge on state of the art design and quality. Our in-house installation staff have solved the most challenging mounting problems and are paid hourly, not by the job. We take the time to do it right the first time. Montgomery Shade and awning were wonderful. They made multiple visits and spent time with us to ensure we got the products we needed and the colors we wanted. They had to design and build a custom awning to go over our basement stairwell - results are great. Installation of both the fixed awning and the retractable over our deck was well-done. We couldn't be more pleased - highly recommended.

Rob Montgomery came to the house for the initial estimate and brought samples for the awning we were looking to purchase. He was very knowledgeable about the different manufacturers and their track records for quality and service. We sent him a photo of the patio before he came and he brought samples to provide some excellent color and style options. He also gave us honest feedback on some of the options, including lighting and wind sensors. The installation was professionally done by Ron Montgomery and we are extremely pleased with the look and functionality of the final product, which covered a large part of our concrete patio that is exposed to direct sunlight about 10 hours a day in the summer. The shade provided by the awning makes the patio much more usable and is very attractive. The whole process for the custom awning was about 3 1/2 weeks from estimate to installation.

We put our work out for competitive bid among three companies. We liked Montgomery best as they were the most responsive. Fortunately, their bid was also the most reasonable. The work was done beautifully, we were kept informed, and every employee representing the company was very professional. I would hire this company again. Mr. Rob Montgomery returned my initial call within a day. He set up an appointment quickly and was very prompt and professional. He explained all of the options available and patiently answered all of my questions. I like dealing with companies that install and service their products, and this family run company does that. Approximately three weeks later the awning was installed, by Mr. Montgomery's son, which went great. I really love it! <br />

In 2003, Montgomery Shade and Awning installed a retractable awning on our townhouse. In 2014, after 11 years of use, we needed to replace the fabric on the awning to shade a planned patio. The original awning frame and mechanism are still in great shape, and looks brand new with the updated fabric. Both times, we had a great experience with this company. <br />

We had a pretty challenging situation.  We built this gorgeous covered deck and got all this trip added to the columns. One thing we did not foresee was that in the afternoons, the sun would still come and bathe the entire deck in sunlight and thus <strong><em>heat</em></strong>, rendering our very expensive roof useless!   <br /> We wanted something that did not block our view, did not interfere with the trim on the columns, did not have cables for our puppy and kids to mess with, and above all <strong><em>cut</em></strong> <strong>down the heat </strong>and the blinding sun.   <br /> Montgomery Awnings came with the perfect solution.  We had this very large shade made that runs on side tracks (instead of cables). It basically turns our deck into a screened in porch (at least on one side).  It was a lot more than I wanted to pay, but SO WORTH IT! <br /> Rob the owner was VERY professional, knowlegeble, and responsive.  The folks installing it were awesome.  They took so much care and time to make sure that our trim did not get damaged.  They did an awesome job! <br /> I am very very happy with my new shade. <br />

I had some growing issues with my heretofore long-standing awning company and decided it was time to find another company to put up (Spring) and take down (Fall) my patio awning each year.  I check Angie's list and decided to try Montgomery Shade and Awning.  Mr. Montgomery answered the phone directly and in short order scheduled an appointment for his internal crew to install my awning for the coming season.  His son, Brian, and another gentleman arrived right on time and install my awning for the season, clearly knowing exactly what they were doing.  Our condo association is doing balcony repair and maintenance, which will require temporary removal of our awning frames.  I mentioned this to Brian and he indicated that when the time comes this will pose no problem for Montgomery Shade and Awning to do the necessary removal and reinstall of the awning framework.  This was a very efficient, informative, and pleasant experience.  I believe I have found my new awning company. <br />

I worked with Rob Montgomery directly for everything regarding the <br /> awning project.  He initially gave us a very detailed estimate which <br /> included a picture of the suggested awning superimposed over an actual <br /> picture of the back of our house.  That picture was actually the selling <br /> point for us, because my family is located overseas and we needed to <br /> put up an awning over the back door of our house in Sterling because of <br /> flooding issues.  I was able to email the picture of the awning to our <br /> HOA which helped smooth the way to getting it approved.  We were <br /> supposed to match the color of the new awning to our front door and Rob <br /> took the trouble to go back to our house and compare a swatch of the <br /> awning we had in mind to the door to ensure that it matched. <br /> Every <br /> interaction we had with Rob Montgomery was professional and pleasant.  <br /> His estimate was a bit higher than the two other companies that we got <br /> quotes from, but the difference was negligible combined with the Angies <br /> List coupon. <br /> I would definitely recommend this company. <br />

 The work took longer than expected mainly because to try to save us money they were trying to find the replacement piece for the broken awning but after three tries which they did not charge us for the trips we ended up ordering a new one. They were very courteous and knowledgeable.

We were needing some shade for our back patio. We called them up to have an awning attached. They showed us different samples that match our house. A two year installation warranty and a 10 year lifetime warranty came along with the purchase of the awning.

Rob Montgomery has been a pleasure to work with. He was extremely knowledgeable in helping us through the process of repairing our awning and frame after it was damaged in a storm. He returns calls quickly, is very reliable, and has helped us keep our awning looking good. Their annual cleaning and service fee isn't cheap, but they do a great job.
