During the wrap up of the project, here were numerous delays caused by their employee problems as they finished the hallway bath, but my biggest concern was the placement of the tiles. The tile work was not very good and I had to ask a few times to have them redo certain areas. They we not happy, and the result is still not very nice and it looks unprofessional. This company is stretched way too thin. At times, Mike the President had to come to do the work because be did not have anyone to send me. He also had the tile person doing some minor plumbing when his plumber could, not come out. It made us uncomfortable. At one point, the tile person drilled a hole into a pipe and caused small amounts of water to leak. There was very little onsite supervision. At the end of the day, we lost our home because of their negligence and lack of supervision. They let an unsupervised apprentice break protocol and did things that were not safe. This resulted in the total loss of our home. We lived in our home 30 years and have things that can never be replaced. We have three children and they are devastated that they lost their home and can't understand how this could happen. Thank goodness no one was hurt and we have insurance that will pay for some of this. What is the most baffling is MPOs behavior right after this loss. They are not allowed back in due to the water remediation and clean-up. They quickly got a lawyer and denied any wrong doing. We understand that accidents can happen...but you should apologize, take responsibility and do what its right. They have refused to do this and it is disheartening. We do not trust them and could not for, that reason allow them back into our home as it is being rebuilt to finish their work on the hallway bath. The hallway bath is still not finished and we had to hire another company to complete the work and redo the sub par work that MPO did. MPO is mad and is demanding the remainder $1,800 that would have completed their work (out of ove $6,000). However, since their negligence destroyed our home and our trust in their company is also destroyed, we fired them and they are not allowed near our property. Under no circumstances could we let them back on our property, we feel it would be too great a risk considering what they have done and the work that they did do was not very good and parts have to be redone too. Please think twice before hiring MPO. They have a lot to learn about project management, quality of work, customer service and resource allocation. In addition, they need more onsite supervision and junior apprentices need to be supervised and watched carefully while they are working. We are working hard to rebuild our home and our lives and want to prevent this happening to anyone else. We have documented this experience through pictures and video and can share with anyone our experience with MPO. I feel bad that we have to post a review like this. Overall, my experience with vendors from Angie's List have been outstanding. However, this has been a nightmare for our family and resulted in a devastating loss for us. I understand that MPO may continue to deny they did anything wrong and not take responsibility. However, it does not take a lot to do the right thing. Any reasonable homeowner would not let this company back on their property after this type of loss. It is heartbreaking for us to have to write this and be in this situation. But the point of Angie's List is to inform people about vendors and services out there. Understaning that accidents do happen, the right thing to do and the moral thing to do would be to take responsibility. That has not happened as of yet, but we are hopeful that Mike will do the right thing.
"While we are sympathetic to the member, MPO Builders is not responsible for the damage the member described. We were hired by the member to remodel the hallway bathroom on the second floor of the property. After completing the demolition of the bathroom, we discovered a small amount of mold/water damaged coming from a plumbing failure in the master bathroom. Upon discovery of the mold we advised the member to have a mold remediation company come out and assess and remedy the issue. The member independently hired a mold remediation company who demolished the master bathroom and the living room ceiling on the first floor of the property and remediated the mold. That company also sealed off the master bathroom and the affected area in the living room. At no point during our remodel of the hallway bathroom did we do any work in either the master bathroom or the living room. On the day we were to complete our contracted work (install shower head and vanity) we arrived at the property, where the member was waiting, and saw the water damage and that the water had been turned off from the main. The member indicated that she believed a pipe that we installed had broken. We asked the member to turn on the water main so we could inspect our plumbing work and determine the source of the leak. The member obliged and when the water main was turned on it was evident that the water was coming from a faucet in the master bathroom that had been shut off by the mold remediation company. The member immediately accused us of turning the water on and we reminded the member that we did not perform any work in the master bathroom. The member made a claim through our insurance company and their investigation determined we were not liable for the water damage. We are deeply sympathetic to the member for the damage that occurred to their property but we cannot accept responsibility for something that we did not do. We are simply seeking payment for the contracted work that was completed in the hallway bathroom which was not damaged by the flooding. MPO Builders, Inc."

It's been over a year since they did the work and about five months since I tried to get them to come back and correct their work.
My original quote (actually the offer details) included an hour long review of projects/required materials in my home - Mike never did that (despite multiple requests). When I pointed out that he wouldn't come prepared to get started, he said they wouldn't bill for the extra time to get materials/prep on the first day.
He sent his sub-contractor on day one, Timely and a nice guy, seemed capable and efficient, but minor language barrier for me (which wouldn't have been a problem had the pre-work meeting happened and been communicated) and clearly not a GC/proj manager. So as he started and got through the next day or two, it was claer that he wasn't very organized.
Mike showed up in the middle of day 1 - no warning which is fine in theory, but I was on a conference call for work. By the time I got off, he was gone. Two days to return my call. The sub said he'd shown up the next day, but I wasn't able to work from home. No call on Tuesday. We did talk on Wednesday, but by Wednesday a five day deal is pretty far gone...
At the end of the week, the only project that was fully completed was the leak in my utility sink. Mike said he'd have to charge me for additional days- but would give me the rate tied to the deal. Once we walked through the poor organization and his lack of ability to engage/fix it, he agreed to send the guy back at no cost to me on Monday - he tried to say the following Thursday, but I pushed back.
Over the weekend, I sanded and mudded a 2nd coat or sanded and painted in all three wall repairs, so some of the work was pushed further along than it had been left on Friday so everything was done by end of week.
I was pretty happy with the work completed, but then it took another week for them to clear the debris - Mike had said yes, but his sub said no on removing the debris. I actually withheld payment of materials until he'd removed it.
I was actually pretty ok with them at the end of the next week (well the following week since that's when the debris was finally gone). I wouldn't ' have used them again, but felt like he'd made an effort to make it right.
However the next winter -approx Jan of 2015 and about 9 months after the repair, the same pipe burst again (according to the plumber who came, in the exact same spot). Their repair job hadn't even made it a year. I tried calling the day of the leak - no answer or call back. Luckily my neighbors had a plumber coming the next day and they were willing to do a quick fix for me. Continued to call MPO every couple of days. No call back for at least a week, by which time the pipe repair had been done.
I finally got a call back over a week later - from someone else at the company. They did offer to come look at it, but I pointed out that I couldn't wait over a week with pipe repairs and had someone else come in. I did suggest they come repair the dry wall since that hadn't been done by the plumbing company.
He said he'd talk to Mike and get back to me. I never heard back. Might have called one more time to try, but then gave up .

What I liked: his quoted prices, reviews on Angie's lists. He adjusted through some difficulties I had with the interior designer's measurements. What I didn't like: took all summer to finish the garage deck, I did ask for special order material but after checking with Home Depot how long it'd take to be delivered it is 2 weeks. Mike took all summer after I gave him the money for it. I also had to make my own arrangements with the sub contractor to get it finished because they didn't order enough material and nobody wanted to own up to it, And I needed the garage finished. The prices for labor add ons or work needed to finish the project were outrageously high. I paid them in order to move the project forward and it's tough to find contractors to finish 1/2 done work. Details left 'til the end were not completed even though he said it would be done. Had to try VERY hard to get a hold of him and convince him that the garage was leaking from the deck and forming puddles. And last but not least, the paint he charged a pretty penny for needs to be redone since the tape from the ceilings seems to have been painted over vs fixed and now it's going to have to get redone for the entire 2nd floor of the house. I did not continue work with him for the rest of the house since another contractor gave me 30% cheaper prices and I think Michael thought I'd automatically continue with the rest since I started with him. The first quote was just a hook. Price noted below is for labor only, does not include any materials etc. or other misc items I may have missed.

Mike and his crew redid both of our bathrooms with heated floors and all the works. The project was a little bit challenging in that we did one wall with pebbles which was very labor intensive. Still, they did a great job. My wife now says we have a better bathroom than the spas / hotels.
These guys are first-rate. I've worked with four of them now, including the company president Michael O'Brien, and they are each exceptional in quality, attention to detail, and courteous service. I had two sets of closet doors delivered to a store near one of their homes, and he picked up and delivered the doors both times for me. This is just one of several examples in which they worked in making things as easy as possible for me. The initial week-long visit and a second occasion when I hired them again meant huge leaps forward for my home, and I have come to trust that they will show up and get the job done. The Angie's List special was a steal; it was sobering to hire them for a single day and have a higher price. But MPO is worth it, especially as part of this last visit consisted of setting right work I'd had done by others before I found these guys: they are my answer to home repair and construction jobs!
They were good and friendly. They did the work. They were qucik with the work. They did a couple of small things. There were some additional fees for materials. It was not spectacular work but it was okay. They came everyday and did their work.

Bathroom remodel nightmare.
Before hiring MPO builders I had asked about the owners experience and workers qualifications. Once the project was underway I realized the construction workers had limited to no experience doing certain jobs. The owner Mike wasn't around to supervise at any time during the week leaving the task up to me. In the end these guys needed more supervision then I could give them. Mike did stop by one day at my request but ultimately that angered the workers instead of making them more conscientious.

The plumber (14 years? experience) and his brother were the two construction workers on the project.

Day one the workers showed up and asked what they needed to do.

Plumbing

Plumbing- A one day job turned into three days of work

On day two the plumber expressed concern multiple times over the difficulty of basic plumbing work.

He didn?t have the necessary tools to complete the job which meant I had to rent them for him.

Before the project began additional plumbing work was agreed on but was never started. After

seeing the plumber?s lack of experience I asked that this work not be done.
Construction

Additional support for the shower base was not secured to the existing joists

Exposed electrical wiring was discovered under the floor and If I hadn't noticed he wouldn't have said anything. He didn't see

this as an issue because ?it would be covered up? Electrical work was not included in the project and I didn't expect him to fix it but he should have notified me of the hazard.

Floor is not level. Up to one inch off around toilet

Wall sconce boxes were not at same height

Needed to remind the guys to insulate the exterior wall

Exterior wall insulation consisted of chunks of styrofoam being loosely placed in one cavity

Floor tile is white and it was to have grey grout. The tile is uneven and spacing is so off that some tiles are touching

each other. This resulted in the grout having to be changed to white so the
imperfections could be hidden.

While grouting a 12 x 12 sheet of tiles came up in one piece with no thinset stuck to the back of it. This raises a concern

over the remainder of the floor and how secure are those tiles

The main construction guy said this was his first job for MPO builders and I was kept busy keeping him from cutting corners

and slacking at the end of each day

Discovered while glass shower door was being measured for. Walls were up to one inch out of plumb and shower base edge

tilted out instead of in for water drainage.
When the garbage was removed, 14 iron posts forming a fence were pulled out of the ground and taken.
I told the guys about this but they didn't have them brought back.
I?m sure are there are many things I?m not aware of that will come up in years to come since I wasn't able to watch their every move.
Lastly, if contractors are going to speak about the client in another language, they should make sure the client doesn't understand the language they are speaking in.
Bottom line, I think most of the issues could have been avoided if proper supervision was provided and MPO or the guys would have been up front about what they were skilled at. I would have been happy to work with MPO Builders to ensure quality work was done.
After the project was complete Mike was apologetic for the work and asked what could be done but that concern doesn?t help after everything is done.
"Member, Thank you for your review. We apologize that you were left dissatisfied with the work that was performed. In this case, you purchased a 40 hour Big Deal and asked our remodelers to perform extensive plumbing work in your bathroom. We recommended that we refer the work to our plumber. You declined, as it would not have been covered by the Big Deal you purchased. We performed the plumbing work per your specifications and the work was inspected by our management. We stand that work, as we do all of our work, and offer you the same guarantee on labor and materials that we offer to all of our clients. In regards to the items you claim were not completed, you purchased a deal for 40 hours. A full gut bathroom remodel can not be completed within 40 hours of labor. We completed as many items as possible for you. Once you expressed your dissatisfaciton with the work, we offered to redo or perform any additional work at your request which you also declined. We are sincerely sorry that you were not happy with the work we performed. We take great pride in our work and our goal is to leave our customers 100% satisfied. If there is anything we can do to rectify the situation, please call our office at (773) 414-3864. Sincerely, MPO Builders, Inc."

The painter sent to perform the work was punctual, pleasant, communicative, prepared, and knowledgeable in his trade. He discussed with me what could be performed in the allotted time and her performed the work diligently. The ceilings turned out well. At one point, he needed to step out for a tool and did not count that against the time I paid for. Great job.
We bought this deal for some extra help on our renovatio. Could not provide a licensed in harwood heights IL electrican as we were initially promised, which was the main reason for buying this deal. Owner is hard to get a hold of and get an answer out of, the project manager was easier to work with. The guys who came to do the work were great no issues there that is only reason we would work with them again.
