Nick come to give a bid for sheet-rocking. When I told him that we are in the process of putting flooring down, he said he could do it all, so while we had him there, he inspected the vinyl flooring that we had purchased for installation in our sun-room. He said he could do this for us, gave us details about the project and told us how best to move forward. We gave him a $2,000 deposit to start the work. We gave him the details for where we had purchased the product and the contact information for Mohawk Flooring. He called before the work started and asked for clarification on whether to use the premium or standard underlayment - we went with the premium, $200 more, because we wanted this to be done correctly and to last. He agreed and suggested that we should go forward and use the premium. His fiance helped him bring stuff up the first day and the next he brought in a crew-worker, Janice, who said she'd been laying floor with him for years. They worked a few days and then we got hit with the snow storm and I told him he could hold off a few days; we did not want anyone getting hurt on the drive. The next time he came, I was 10 minutes late and he came unglued. It was some major scary stuff. He started yelling that this is why he wanted a key to our home. I apologized profusely, even offered him a $100 bonus for waiting, but we do not give out keys to our home. He got upset again because I would not give him a key and because he had to wait in the cold even though he had a truck. He said if I do not give him a key, he will not do the job. Again I explained I do not give out keys as I will be home during the job. I gave him the $100 and he said that was insulting, that it's not about the money, starts to walk off the job, and said he is calling my husband. My husband, who came home and tried to smooth things over. They eventually went upstairs and started doing the job again and he began acting normal, which was almost as bazaar as him flying off the handle in the first place. The next day, Janice was on the steps and I asked her if he was ADHD - she said no, he's bipolar and hes's been that way since he was 8 years old. That's when I found out this was his step-mother, not an employee. My husband and I tried to tread lightly, not make any waves. The only thing I requested was that they put the darker pieces in the middle of the room and lighter pieces to the outside because those would be covered with furniture. My husband walks in and starts getting upset, saying that the floor should not behave like this. He could feel that the floor was separating. Then, after Nick had finished part of the baseboards, we saw had used a light stain, not the dark stain we requested and confirmed with him, on the baseboards. He then took the baseboards and threw them off the sun-room porch onto the ground below. My husband tried to appease him, asking him to make them a bronze color that would 'match enough.' I was miserable about it. I didn't want BRONZE baseboards. The next day, he comes back and said he could paint it a solid color, rather than the metallic bronze, and offered to come back with samples I could choose from. I hugged him, I was so excited. After Nick left my husband and I went back upstairs to inspect the floor and found where he had put multiple layers of underlayment trying to balance the floor. The flooring was installed but no baseboards or tiles around the spa and after all these problems, we called in 2 separate firms to inspect the work and give us a feedback. Both, unconnected to each other, said that it should NOT have underlayment - it voids the warranty, the floor was not laid correctly - should be in an H pattern, he should have put a compound on the sub-flooring, and the floor was not leveled. Also, Nick had quoted us for 1,000 square feet - both companies measured us at 750 square feet, total. One even called Mohawk and had them talk to me and tell me directly that you NEVER put an underlayment with their product. After this my husband spoke with Nick and asked for a portion of our money back and informed him of the problems with the flooring. He told us the total was $4177, a balance due of $2177 or he was taking us to court. We are having to repay more to get the job done correctly.
