Northwest Exteriors and Energy Conservation

Electrical for Home Addition or Remodel - Install, Electrical for Home Addition, Electrical Wiring or Panel Upgrade,

About us

I try to offer a quality service at better pricing. I have in the past and still currently do sub work for large companies that send out high pressure sales teams and charge almost unethical prices. These large companies have massive overhead such as warehouses, offices, staffing for warehouses and offices, etc. I am the salesman, project manager, secretary, and in many cases even the installer. I've been in business for over fifteen years and have no claims against my bond, no complaints to the BBB, and many satisfied customers.

No problems arose. I'm getting compliments from neighbors and another contractor that did kitchen work for me. Very easy to talk to and receptive to changes. I'll have to see over time how it holds up. I was a little concerned about how he shimmed up the base and what he used as footings. Decking could have used spacers between boards and end grains could have been rainbowed to prevent cupping but since I didn't get that picky and did not mention it, that is my fault. All in all it looks great and hopefully will weather well. I love the railing he picked out and enjoy the over all look.
The deck took 5 month to get completed from time I was contacted. It was ok for me to wait that long but was worried it wasn't going to be completed. Once the date was set it was built in one day and did very nice job
Rick came in to my house late last year to check on what needs to be done. Later, over the phone, he quoted $1,450 with Angie's List discount - for the above mentioned work - plus $650 for painting. His quote was the most expensive one but he seemed to be professional and had good reviews on Angie's List, hence I decided to hire him. We had to reschedule the work as weather did not permit or he was busy with other work. He showed up on time on the day of work. After he removed the old trims, he suggested not to install z-flashing to avoid new cuts on the siding. He subtracted $300 for the z-flashing with a new total of $1,150 for the job. He applied Grace Vycor Plus window flashing tape on the siding starting from the bottom, then sides, and then to the top of each window. Then, he added 1x3 primed cedar trims around the windows and applied caulk between siding and trim as well as between trim and window frame. He did not paint as he apparently subcontracts painting jobs. He guaranteed his work and said he would come back if any water intrusion issues are seen. He was very professional and pleasant to deal with. I would recommend his work.
They were very professional. They did the job correctly. It was two young men. They stayed on the job. It took them most of the day. They cleaned up their mess when they were done, it was like they were never even there. They did a good job. I thought the pricing was fair. They were right on time. I would recommend them to anybody.

Rick responded quickly to my request for a bid and even though I had just missed his special on Angie's list,,he offered me the same price. He came when he said he would and finished the job in two days as promised. He was also willing to explore options. For example, I asked if the current railing could be re-used instead of purchasing wood for a new one at a cost of nearly $400. He inspected the current railing and agreed it could be re-used. I now have a brand new deck. and his bid was several hundred dollars cheaper than another bid I had received.
The house next door to me had a fire which damaged the side of my house. I had old asbestos siding which couldn't be replaced so I had to look into a full re-siding of the whole house. I did some research of options on-line and decided on fiber cement siding. I'd checked AL for contractors and before talking to them, was leaning toward someone else who was very highly rated. That guy turned out to be a nice guy but sort of flaky, not getting things to me when he said he would, losing my email address etc. NW SIding was professional from beginning to end. Ken, the primary guy who came out to do the estimate and was the contact in the office for everything, was very helpful and informative. I sent A LOT of questions via email and he answered promptly and thoroughly. They subcontracted the insulation and painters but I had no problem with any of them. They came when they said they would and did a fantastic job. The house looks great (though I'm still adjusting to the new color which is my problem, not theirs!) and I would absolutely work with them again. They cleaned up after themselves around the yard too!

The job was completed on time and the deck looks fine. We did ask for a 45-degree corner on the deck to soften the edge and this was not done as specified. However, we still like the look of the deck. Since this was an Angie's Big Deal, the project was worth the value.
Everything went well. He had to dig rather deep for the footing and then hit our sprinkler pipe but he repaired it immediately and was concerned that the repair would hold. We now have a beautiful deck to complement our stream and pond.
Rick was exceptional at communicating what would happen and when. He called if there was any variance from the schedule. I've worked with many contractors and often communication and punctuality are the first things they let go once they get the job. Rick was a welcome exception to that.

The price was great and quality was great. He got it done in 1.5 days all by himself. He was open to discussing various options and seemed motivated to get me the end product I wanted rather than just a set way of doing it. He has obviously done a huge number of decks judging by how fast he knocked it out and how fast he sized up all the alternatives (size, ability to add onto in future, material types, waterproofing options for underneath, etc.). He didn't cut corners anywhere and used the proper materials, pier blocks, fasteners etc. there is no question that he is the one I would call if I did another deck. I'll be calling him to add stairs to the deck next year.

A note about materials: the tight knot cedar gives a blonde, knotty look. I stained with redwood color oil high quality oil stain which gave it a nice redwood color and helped hide some of the knots. I think next time I probably would upgrade to the clear cedar because the railings with this stain look amazing. However the tight knot fit the budget and looks very warm and nice after staining. I would not use thompsons or any other poly type product. Only a very high quality oil stain that soaks into the wood, not a protective film on top of the wood. Penofin, Sunfrog are two examples. I used Sunfrog which is made in west Lynn and it looks great. Soak up any excess after letting it soak into the wood. This is crucial for any oil stain to work properly. Don't let it dry on top of the wood. I'm typing this on my phone and il. Try to post pics if Angie's list lets me when I get to my computer.

I was able to get ahold of Rick Maddams easily and he got back to me in a timely manner with an initial quote. As we set up a start date and a few other details, there was a time delay of a few days in hearing back from him, but he said he was out of town or something similar. I was under a bit of a time crunch and he was willing to come out on the weekend outside of another job he is working to help me get the job done.
The deck on the front of my house is about 5' x 20' with three stairs, and it runs over an open area like the second story of a house rather than next to the ground. It also has electrical running underneath to a light in the front yard. The existing deck was old, cracked, and in need of repair. I had installed metal railings a couple years ago that are very heavy. Rick removed and hauled away all of the old deck and replaced it. The old deck had two goofy steps that Rick replaced with three up-to-code steps. The landing ground for the steps isn't level, but he constructed the steps and deck so they mesh well with the ground, are level, and look good. Rick replaced the deck with a bit stronger of beams than had been removed. The finished product looks great, it was done in two days, and came in at the price bid. Rick did a great job with clean up before leaving as well.
I had a couple of higher priced bids than Rick's and was a little afraid of going with the cheapest offer, but decided on him based on his good Angie's list reviews. I am very happy with the work done and feel I got a great deal. I paid for the work through Paypal to his email address, and it was super easy.
I'm extremely pleased. Rick Maddams didn't try to "upsell" me. He kept me closely informed when scheduling the work and did a great job, letting me know what needed replacing and what could simply be treated or caulked. He worked steadily and cleaned up thoroughly afterwards. The project took 12-15 work hours.

The project went very well. The quality of the materials was good and the craftsmanship was excellent. Rick arrived on time for appointments, worked hard, and built a beautiful deck that exceeded my expectations. I thought the cost was very reasonable for the end product that I received.

Rick Maddams, the ownere, is the consummate professional. His responses were timely. He politely nudged me into making a decision to go forward in the most professional manner. He showed up on time, was open to all of my questions about the process. And, he made minor changes and corrections along the way per my request. He cleaned up after himself, even announced when he would be taking a break so I wouldn't wonder where he'd gone. He personally sourced the materials and details I requested. He is the type of service provider you hope for. No guff, no attitude, just wants to do a good job and please the customer. I liked working with him very much and would not hesitate to recommend him for any siding job. I will likely hire him again in the future.

Owning a few rentals, I have gone through many contractors for repair work and services for my properties. Finding a reliable contractor can be very difficult. I ran across Northwest Exteriors and Energy Conservation and was very impressed. The owner, Rick Maddams, has been very knowledgeable about the products that are on the market. He has been able to keep within my budget using products that not only will stand the test of time but are cost-effective as well. Northwest Exteriors has been extremely professional and responsive. They show up on time, clean up after themselves, call back promptly, and have been flexible with their scheduling to work around my tenants schedules. I highly recommend them.
