We chose Number One because of their reviews and because they had the best price and we are glad we did! We had them remove old laminate floors in our Master Bedroom and Guest Bedroom and install Tigerwood pre-finished engineered floors. One room was nailed and one room floated and both are perfect. The workers were punctual, professional, courteous and, best of all, they cleaned up after the job was done. We would definitely use them again.
We also want to give kudos to the saleman. Not only was he helpful and very responsive, but he took the time to get us actual samples prior to the job starting so we could match some other woodwork we were having done to the floor.
Number One is definitely #1 with us.
Some of the experience was pleasant and the results are mixed. I am content with the way the floors look, but I also think the company cuts corners, reneges on its promises, and provides a job that is just adequate for the price. Tai did accommodate my wishes twice: I added an additional section of floor, which delayed their completion, and he acceded to my demand that the new section have a second coat of polyurethane added. But the contract and the conversations with him promised three coats of Bona product, which was not used. He later amended his statement, saying he meant one coat of stain and two coats of varnish. In the late added section, they did only one coat of polyurethane. The difference between that section and the other floors was palpable and visible. And when he redid the section, he failed to move the refrigerator, so the kitchen floor is not evenly finished. Further, he did not put back the stove they moved out, claiming they don't move furniture. Finally, and worst of all, they did NOTclean up; they left open doors and windows to rooms not being refinished, so that the dust and dirt spread everywhere.
Response from Number One Hardwood Floors
"[Member Name Removed] We are very sorry that you had an unpleasant experience with Number One Hardwood Floors. We do not cut corners . Our normal process consists of one coat of stain and 2 coats of Bona Polyurethane Satin finish. As you explained in your review the job changed when an additional floor was added and we did everything that we could to accomplish your requests. The statement “we do not move furniture” is because our insurance does not cover it. We do everything that we can to work with our customer and are sorry for any misunderstanding there may have been."

I am happy with my new floors! They showed up on time, did a great job of cleaning up at the end of each day and my floors are beautiful. They taped up plastic over all of the areas that were exposed to dust and vacuumed before leavings. I highly recommend this company.
Overall the experience is good. They are very prompt and responsive. Tai is helpful, brief and straight forward. He is not a person who would nickel and dime over small things that I see some other contractors do.
He would recommend you to do a right way, even though that will cost his workers extra efforts. There are corner parts of the spiral stairs need lots of custom cuts. I was thinking about using vinyl, but he talked me out of that decision since it's a cheap choice for Brazilian hardwood floor. He let his main man finish that entirely with hardwood without extra charge.
Again, Tai is brief. He doesn't do the normal sales-talk explaining procedures, details when estimate unless you give questions. If you are a person who don't know anything about flooring, you might feel uncertain when you first talk to him. My suggestions is keep giving questions. That should help.
We bought a home that had original hardwood floors under the carpeting. We pulled up the carpeting on our own to reveal quite a few dark stains from pets. Tai came and gave us a bid that was almost half of what other companies bid, and was able to start work earlier than the other bids as well. It took about a week- and the smell was very strong (inside) for a few days afterwards, but was completely gone by the time we were ready to move in. My 60 year old floors look brand new! I couldn't be happier- and I would easily recommend this company to anyone.
Number One floors had amazing service and the floors now look brand new! I am so impressed. Tai gave a quick estimate and showed up promptly for all appointments. He even helped out with a few extras like putting in siding on one room and sanding down a wood counter. I'd highly recommend their service.
Have to agree with the recent D reviewer. Went with them becuase they were the cheapest - floors look good but still rough to the touch so called them and hopefully they'll fix it and put another coat of sealant on. At least they were responsive without giving me a hard time. The smell is pretty awful, something I hadn't thought about, and thankfully we won't be moving in for another 2 weeks but it could be a major issue for someone who still lives in the house. Would go with a more expensive vendor next time.

UPDATE: I wrote a review last week and gave them a C because the floors were still rough and the smell was quite powerful. When I called, they were very responsive and came out and resealed the floors and now they look great and the smell is almost gone. I was impressed at how responsive they were. I would use them again after they came out and fixed the problem.

They did a really nice job. The price was good and they were on-time, courteous, cleaned up well after themselves and we would use their services again. Their professionalism was really good and they gave us a really good estimate. They completed the work in the time frame they indicated they would and we were comfortable having them in our home.

The best thing I can say about Number One Hardwood Floors is that you may more or less get what you pay for. Compared to other hardwood floor refinishers they are fairly cheap, and their professionalism and the quality of the work is commensurate with that. Some of their work was excellent quality - other parts of it were absolutely terrible. These guys were recommended to us by our real estate agent, who has used them to refinish hardwood floors for houses she is selling. They were certainly fast, which I'm sure RE folks appreciate and so would I if I were selling my house.
The worst thing I can say about them is that they were terrible communicators and horribly unprofessional, cut major corners and failed to fulfill their scope of work without significant pushing on our part. I've worked with a few contractors in my personal life and many in my professional life and these guys were among the worst in these categories. Language issues with our contact at the company made communication difficult, especially when they tried to get away with not doing some of the work they agreed to do. We defnitely had they feeling that they were telling us what they thought we wanted to hear whenever we asked a question or raised an issue. At one point in the process I actually hired another hardwood floor refinisher to come over for a consult, and I'm glad I did as he caught some major issues with the work which we really struggled to get them to remedy.
More details below:
- They didn't cover the vents in the floors when sanding. Let me repeat this - THEY DIDN'T COVER THE VENTS WHEN SANDING! As a result our ducts are filled with sawdust which we are now paying a company to come and vaccum out.
- They used oil-based eurethane, which is cheaper and easier to apply than water-based. This was a huge mistake for us, as I have allergies and am still suffering months later as the floors continue to outgas. This not just an allergy issue, for about a month after the refinishing no one could stand to be in the house for more than a few minutes without getting a headache. At no point did they review our sealant options or what the cost implications might be (we would have gladly paid more for something that didn't outgas so much). Sadly we didn't know any better (we do now!).
- Rather than sanding, staining/filling and then sealing these guys used a one-step stain/finishing product. Quick, but environmentally dirty and low-quality. Even the cheaper hardwood floor refinishers will do a three-step process with staining and water-based eurethane to reduce outgassing. Again, we didn't know any better.
- They applied only one coat of finish to the floors. Their scope called for two coats. When they called me to tell me the floors were done I went over to inspect them and found that the floors were still rough to the touch. It was obvious that they hadn't fully sealed them and the wood would begin to wear as soon as we moved in. The hardwood floor consult that I paid for confimed this.
- They failed to coordinate with our General Contractor as agreed, and pushed forward with the work even when they had been told to slow down and do the requested coordination. Generally they were extremely pushy and obviously in a rush to get our job done and more on to the next one.
- Their sanding was actually excellent. Very smooth, no ripples or other defects. Their wood patching was also excellent. The parts of the sanding and wood patching they actually completed were quite good - the problems were with finishing and their overall professionalism.
- Their finishing was terrible. Tons of shiny nail heads, nonmatching wood filler in other nail heads, huge chunks of filler packed into holes and gaps in the wood where they should have just replaced the wood. We have numerous ugly globs of filler in the floors and have many divets and cracks where the filler has settled since the work was completed.
- They failed to fulfill their scope of work and rather than replacing some rotting wood boards just finished over them (I guess they hoped we wouldn't notice since they were in the corner of a closet)?
Everything was fine. They did a great job with what I asked them to do and I had no problems. Their people were also professional.

I had a short window of time to refinish my floors and made several calls to floor specialists. From a scheduling standpoint just getting someone to my home seemed to be a challenge. I talked with Tai for my initial inquiry call. The outlook he gave me regarding time to complete my job was so positive I immediately set up an estimate at my residence. By far Number One Hardwood Floors exceeded at all levels for this job from start to finish. I could go on and on. Bottom line: they finished early and my hardwood floors looked spectacular. I really lucked out calling them.

Tai returned my call right away and came out quickly to give me an estimate. His estimate was right in the area of the other bids and then he took the 15% off for Angie's List customers which made him even more affordable. We were gone the week he did the work so I left a key for him and he came and went as he needed. When we got home from vacation, our floors were all finished and beautiful looking! I am so pleased with the work he did. Our dog has already dribbled water on the floor and the water beads up with the finish Tai put on the floors. I would recommend Tai to work in your house. He his honest and trustworthy and the finished product is beautiful.
Tai called right away, gave a pretty reasonable estimate among the ones we received. Was flexible in arranging a start date. Finished ahead of schedule! Made our 105 year old floors look like new - I am not kidding!! Did an amazing job. Would definitely work with him again.
These guys are great. Very responsive and punctual and for the money they really do excellent work. We hired them to remove some nasty old flooring that had been laid down in the 70's in our kitchen. There were about three layers of things on top of the original T&G douglass fir softboards. They removed all the old stuff and patched in the damaged and missing boards where needed. Then they diligently sanded and refinished the floors, taking care to make them look as good as possible. They also provided transitions from the two rooms leading into our refinished area. Our floors are beautiful and we're very happy with their work. The price these guys offered couldn't be beat.
Number One Hardwood Floors was among six companies we received estimates from. We only used top-rated contractors for all the work on our (100y.o.) new home. They were the most professional, responsive, reliable, and informative flooring company we interviewed. They also gave us the most reasonable estimate for the work proposed.
We get compliments on the floors and their work frequently! The color of the floor is beautiful and the satin sheen finish is exactly as expected.
The work was done in an incredibly timely manner. Tai was always very flexible in scheduling with our general contractor to ensure that no one was in anyone else's way; everything was expedited beautifully.
This company is, hands-down, excellent. They have gone over-and-above what I ever expected in making sure that we are happy with the outcome of their work. For example, after our moving company scratched the floors in two of our bedrooms and our living room, Tai (one of the owners) came out, assessed the damage, and offered to refinish those areas at no charge.
We would recommend them without a moment's reservation.
A1 came immediately, gave us a reasonable quote right away. they were able to do the work within a week of giving us our quote. they came, replaced damaged floorboards, sanded the entire floor and refinished within 3 days. They were very careful and clean. our floors look fabulous.
(we had our living room, dining room, powder room, stairway and entry way refinished.)
My experience with them was probably about average. They did nice work, they were fast and fairly clean but there was quite a lot of more dust left over than what I was expecting. They did take a little bit of cleaning but I guess that is to be expected with the type of work they did. They were fast and they did what they said they were going to do on time and on budget.
