***ALERT: Ignored and Refused to Refund My Deposit for Work Never Started*** It is Unfortunate that I have to write this Review---I have known Derek, the Owner of Oddjobsri.com for years. He knew my late husband. I had hired him for many jobs, some more extensive than others--including installation of brand new windows And gutting the FL rm. (outdoor rm.) to make a new, additional living space. He has been friendly and knowledgeable. I have been very happy with his work, And appreciate that No Job is too small. He will do it! ***In all fairness---He has done quality work. When he shows up!!!! More often than not, he would cancel on me last minute. Several months ago, I hired him to install One Anderson Replacement Window for my bedroom---the only window not new. Generally, he asks for 1/3 Deposit, but in his Invoice Notes to me, this time he asked for more, citing "additional materials needed." I trusted him, and didn't think twice. Additionally, I have provided funds in the past Prior to the work being started, when asked. I never thought of myself as gullible, but apparently I didn't think this one through. The last time I heard from Derek was via text a few months ago when I was expecting him to come up, the morning of, to begin the job---finally after a number of cancellations and rescheduling attempts. The morning of, he texted me---"I Can't Come Today." No Explanation. No Apology. Initially, I tried to reschedule, Yet Again... But soon after having Not heard back from him, I attempted to reach out to him via text, first, to ask Only for my $500 Full Refund (which included the Window--paid but Not Received). I owed him an additional $200 when the job was completed. IT WAS NEVER STARTED---and I simply was requesting that my money be returned to me (and/or minus the Window), which was also never received. He said (Home Depot?) couldn't find it when I asked. Over the past several months, I have tried to text him Many Times, (unsuccessfully), left a VM, and then finally mailed him a letter, which stated that due to his obvious, and continued, NON COMPLIANCE, I felt that he had left me no choice but to pursue legal services' (or Small Claim's Court). I gave him EVERY opportunity to do the right thing--continuing to give him the benefit of the doubt. No Response. So, here we are mid- Nov. No Refund ($500). No one deserves to be treated this way. It is unprofessional, and demonstrates his lack of integrity. Since word-of-mouth is particularly helpful in this business, I feel it is Important to Warn people that might be contemplating hiring him----That he will inevitably cancel the appt. last minute, not follow-up with rescheduling...And perhaps SCAM You out of your money Or ask for additional funds upfront. This may not happen to you right away, but if this is evidence of his true character---time will tell. I DON'T WANT to have to go the SMALL CLAIMS ROUTE, And with the holidays right around the corner, but his NON-COMPLIANCE seems to be an indication of what direction this must take. ----Again, this is Not what I wanted Derek, but you left me no choice. Why, Because You Can? TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF, DISAPPOINTED, SCAMMED....PERPLEXED. Janice L. *** Update *** Just wanted to add: I initiated wanting to do this job, in May of 2019, But due to his schedule, and coordinating our schedules, it was dragged out OVER SEVERAL MONTHS---before we started to discuss in earnest when to START the job. I was asked to provide More than the usual 1/3 Deposit---which in this case was a (Total of $500---more needed, he said to cover materials) for a $700 job (ESTIMATE PROVIDED) that was NEVER STARTED, Because I have used his services many times over the past five years, I trusted him, and really didn't think anything of it---But from my reading, this is one of the Number One ways Contractors/Handymen SCAM people! I Also wanted to add that IF I were to have rated him for past jobs, I would have given him an A-. His work was always quality. The only problem I had with him in the past was that he would OFTEN either NOT show up, or Cancel last minute---usually with little or not apology or explanation. This is why I am so dumbfounded as to why he has made the decision to do this to me--to IGNORE my request for a FULL REFUND of $500 for services that were NEVER PERFORMED (Including a Window--Paid For--But Never Received). ****I Just Want Derek to know that I feel BETRAYED---And that his decision to ignore me speaks to his lack of character. I gave him EVERY Opportunity to do the right thing---including ample time--particularly with the holidays approaching---BUT HE CHOSE Not to handle this amicably, and as a professional---as I would have preferred. I also Really didn't want to have to pursue the Small Claim's Court Route b/c I thought Derek would inevitably do the honorable thing. ---It has been suggested to me that I might want to contact the Attorney General's Office.
