It was not a great experience. He is an independent carpenter who wasn't really prepared. He came in and had a lot of comments and big ideas. We went into contract in July and he didn't get the job done until February next year and it was just a floor to ceiling bookshelf and that was going to be an $8000 job. He had a lot of issues in between. He didn't have insurance to work and our building required that he have insurance and he wanted me to take pay for the insurance and I told him that was his responsibility. So we had to go back and forth on that. Then he wanted half of the payment up front to buy material and whatever. Then he would go off and I wouldn't hear from him in awhile and I would have to chase him down for like weeks at a time. It was going to be a two week job and it turned into six month. The bookshelf wasn't symmetrical once it was done.

On Sept.2014, we signed our contract, Mr Jamal James of OJs Woodwork, took the measurements and the deposit of $3,000.00: he also advised us that the work will be completed in approximately 1 month. Let me add now, No Other Work Was Done For This Job! This Work Was NOT Completed! As we attempted to contact Mr. James, his voice mailbox was always full, so we began to follow-up by texts. When we were finally able to leave a voice message, it took 5 times before he returned our calls. On 11/29/14, we spoke and Mr. James said, he would call us 12/1/14, to arrange an appointment, so we can see the rough draft, to make any necessary revisions. Although, Mr. James didn't call on 12/1, we did speak and make an appointment within the first two weeks of December. Mr. James was a No Call/ No Show. On 12/11, we spoke again, but this time Mr. James said he was in transit and would call us when he returned to his office. Once again, Mr. James didn't honor his word; he didn't respond to our numerous messages until his text to us, on 02/08/15. The text mentioned- Mr. James has a new shop location and he was going to stop by and take us to the new shop. Again, we didn't receive any additional communication until 02/23/15. On 02/23, Mr. James answered our call and informed us, he would be in traction for the next 3 days but he would call us as soon as the therapy was completed. This call was the last time Mr. James responded to our calls and texts. Despite the fact that on 03/31/15, his voice mailbox was full @11am and @8:30pm, we called again and left a voice message but still No Response to this date! Mr. Jamal James of OJs Woodwork, Failed to honor our contract and his verbal word. It's unfortunate that his actions prove to be those of a scam artist! He took measurements and the $3,000.00 deposit and didn't do anymore work in the past seven months!

The guys were very nice. However they took longer than they said they would despite me saying there was a hard deadline. The work itself was pretty good although it seems like they had to rush once they got behind and in those areas the quality wasn't as good.
On 11/25 after he was contacted by Angie?s List he came to work after an absence of 4 weeks. The project is not completed after one week of work. Since then he has not shown up and does not answer by calls. Currently Work needed to be done:

1. Install window
2. Install wash basin
3. Redo cabinet door he made to fit
4. Repair sheet rock used closed
5. Washer has no power
Please contact him and have him call me.
On 11/15/13 Jamal James & his partner came to assess what needed to be done to complete the job after they were contacted by Angie?s List & after I called them and said they have one week in which to complete the job or I will be forced to make a complaint. The project began 10/7/13. They were her for an hour & a half, removed the closet door to be cut down to size. I was told the window they ordered was not as I wanted, which was supposed to be frosted glass & push out. The washer & drier were placed in an ?L? patter with a counter over them, which did not fit right so the gas connection that was placed on another wall to high up & requires to be redone lower.

On 11/19 Mr. James showed up without calling me around 10:00 AM brought a new counter, supplies & tools and told me his partner is coming later to do the work and left. He never showed up. I called Jemmal Ryan to see when he would be here, He knew nothing of it. No work has been done yet. Additional work they need to do is:

1. Put a stone slab at entrance to room & repair molding ? done
2. Cut out wall & install window
3. Make exhaust for drier doneInstal laundry basin
4. Install closet door done 11/24
6. Connect machines to gas line & water done
7. Finish closing up the back wall in the garage
8. Touch up pain in kitchen which was damaged. Done
9. Install handles on cabinet done
10. COVER UP PIPE UNDER CELING GOING ACROSS ONE WALL. done 11/23

Work on this project was started on 10/7/13. Is now a month that no work has been done whatsoever and I have already paid $10,000 out of the $11,000.

Everything they did on the upside of the room they have to redo to adjust. They are unprofessional & always late and even put in a full days work.
Response from OJs Woodwork
"its my desire to resolve this issue suronding Ms.[MEMBER NAME REMOVED] project .We put in writing all the details as to how each appliance going to position in the room, after frame the room and have the plumer install the pipe and drain Ms.[MEMBER NAME REMOVED] have him remove the pipes stated she don't want it installed that way so he did it the way she want it I asked her to allow us to do the work and leave the guys to do his job when it did not work out the way she want it she says he should now better not to listen to her so we had to re-do it all over again . We had similar issue with the electrical persionel and he refuse to go back. I patently work with her take my loss and finally we only have the window and a sink leave to installed . I buy them and she insisted that is not what she want I had to return them."

He is good. His price is reasonable. His work is quality but he isn't timely. He told us the job would take 3 days and it ended up to be 2 weeks. I can't complain about the quality. I would use him again but not in a time crunch.

The bathroom on the second floor of our home was gutted so that we could level the very badly sloping floor due to damage to the floor joists. OJ arrived to give a quote within thirty minutes of contacting him, and returned an hour later to complete the work in about two hours total. We reviewed his job together on completion and it was as good as I expected it to be (that is, it was perfectly level, at least in the spots we checked together).
The work was required in order to meet the requirements of the the NYC Dept. of Buildings. OJ figured out how to meet the requirements without damaging the brownstone doors which are over 100 years old. He did an excellent job and even came back on a Saturday evening to do more work on one of the doors.
OJ Woodworking was hired to do what I described above in a rental unit. Mr. James, OJ Woodworking arrived and immediately got to work. The job ran over (as all jobs do, not my first at the rodeo) but he stayed way into the evening until the job was finished.
The new tenant, "LOVESSSSSS" his apartment, and if he is happy I am delighted, thanks to Mr. James.
This company lives up to their rating.
OJ came to my home a few hours after my somewhat frantic initial call. We had three solid wood bookcases/storage units sitting in our backyard which we had taken out of storage to put in our basement. Turns out they were too tall by a several inches and we faced with either having to get rid of them or finding someone who could cut them down to the necessary height.
OJ took a look at them as well as the space they were going into and gave us a fair price (which we based on what we would pay to replace the units). He then proceeded to load them into his van in order to take them to his shop where he explained he had all the necessary saws and tools needed. He brought them back as promised, a few days later after which put them together and installed/secured the units in our basement for us.
He was very professional throughout the process and very punctual.
We are very happy with the work and his responsiveness.
Thank you OJ!
This guy is an artist.
The stairs and banister are beautiful.
He is a true craftsman.
As with any job there were complication, mishaps and human error, but at the end of the day I have a magnificent set of stairs in a fairly short period of time.
I would hire him again, give him flexibility with the timing and would have someone on-site to monitor to avoid mishaps. The quality of his work is well worth it.
I have worked with OJs Woodwork on several occasions. Jamal, who is the owner, is professional, polite, punctual, returns calls and his prices are competitive. His workers are also very professional, working quickly and efficiently. They were also quiet, respectful of being in my home among my family and cleaned up at the end of every work session.
The first job was to put up an interior wall dividing 1 long room. They framed, drywalled, plastered and painted the wall. The second job was to paint the master bedroom and hallway. For the third project, a mirror was stripped of its original varnish and Jamal refinished with an oil stain. Jamal is a carpenter and did an amazing job. It took a couple of days. The following 2 jobs were smaller where OJs had to open up several holes in certain walls for a plumbing inspection. Despite being busy at that time, Jamal graciously took on the job, returning a week later to patch up after the inspection.
I have only positive things to say about OJs Woodwork and highly recommend them for jobs big or small. They are true professionals and are exceptionally pleasant to work with!

Jamal came over three months prior to me hiring him for the job and gave me an estimate. I found him to be very professional, he was pleasent and knowledgable in his craft. Once I decided to hire him, he was extremely accommodating to my schedule and although I felt he spread himself a little thin between his time with clients, he was still very present and attentive when doing the job. It took two days to finish the job, two weekends, an all day process. I was adamant about getting this job done before a trip I am taking in a couple of days and he worked with me and got the job done. Above all, he is pleasant and I enjoyed his and his worker's conversation when here. BUT, my favorite, favorite part of this entire process, with the exception of my doors, is that they cleaned up, thoroughly, after they were done, each time they were here. When they left, it looked as if nothing had ever happened in my apt, considering how esque it was while they were working. Overall, I am very happy with the services provided and would use Jamal again for future projects.
I contacted OJ's Woodwork Friday Morning 12/21/12 and he returned my telephone call right away. I informed him of my problem. I told him that if possible I would like my crown molding put up before the Holidays. I explainded to him that the carpenter who installed the cabinets was booked and he did know when he would be able to install it. I had contacted other carpenters who told me this was considered a small job and it would be very hard to get someone to do it and don't forget this is the last Friday before the Holidays.
This is not what I heard from OJ's Woodwork. He asked me what time I would be home from work that evening and he would come by and take a look at the job and provide me with an estimate. He also said that if the job is as small as you say it is I can do it for you this evening. "WORDS TO MY EARS".
I called him when I arrived from work that evening and he said I'm on my way to you (I was so happy). He came, took a look at the job and gave me an estimate. I said can you do it this evening? He said let me go get my tools. The job took about 3 hours to complete. He explained everything to me before he started the job and when he was finished he called me into the kitchen and asked me was I OK with it.
I can't rate him high enough in professionalism, quality, punctuality, responsiveness and price. He made feel very confortable and I felt as if I knew him for years. His work is REMARKABLE and YES I will use him again. As a matter of fact I put his cell phone number in my home and cell phone. I have told family, friends and as many people about him as possible.
THANKS OJ's Woodwork.
