Quick version: This company lacks any real professionalism or customer-centered view and are out to wring high margin profits out of unsuspecting customers.
Full version: I was notified that a multi-point inspection special was on offer from this company through Angie's List. I thought that it would be useful to pay for the inspection in my new home. I paid for the inspection visit and awaited an appointment from the company. Within a few days they contacted me and arranged a date and two-hour window. They assured me that I would be contacted as the technician was heading to my home so that I could make the short journey from work and meet them.
On the day, I was alerted at the top of the hour by a national call center that the technician was at my home. They knew nothing about the arrangement agreed whereby I would be given a ten minute window. I ran home to find .... no one. After twenty additional minutes (thirty into the two hour window for the appointment) I contacted the national service center. They dropped my call, but phoned back to tell me that the technician was on their way. Fifteen minutes later the technician arrived.
The technician was friendly, courteous, and set about inspecting the furnace. After some twenty minutes, the inspection was complete and the technician asked to share their findings.
Three issues had been identified. Part of the 2006 furnace itself needed to be insulated, at an estimate of $358.00. The blower drum needed to be cleaned, amazingly enough, also at a cost of $358.00. The capacitor for the blower motor was at 9.46 and needed to be replaced. When I asked for more information on this capacitor I was told the following: It should be 10, the technician didn't know what units the readings were in, and that when it reached 9.4 the furnace would cease working. To fix was $153.00 for a new capacitor. I hesitated and the technician told me that the capacitor was the one item he deemed critical, but that I could wait for the furnace to fail and he would return to fix it afterwards, I would only be out of heat for the period to arrange a return.
I asked about the warranty on the new capacitor to understand what my investment of $153.00 would get me in order to keep my furnace working. He responded that if the capacitor failed sometime in the next year, he would return and replace it for free. Nothing in writing.
Despite my misgivings, I proceeded to authorize the replacement. He finished the job in under ten minutes. I asked him to leave the old capacitor and he hesitated, but upon my insistence he left it. I paid him a total of $193.00 for the replacement of the capacitor, parts and labor (< ten minutes). I immediately went to the internet to look up this part. Here is a link to the part on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/97F9002-Volt-Oval-Capacitor-Upgrade/dp/B00EUGJ7FO It costs $11.52 at the time of this review. The company charged me some 12x the cost of the part on amazon. They charged my $40 for labor for the replacement. Here is the youtube video showing how to do it yourself < two minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPIZEFzalgI
I phoned the company within twenty minutes of the technician leaving to express my alarm and regret. I was pushed between multiple staff at the national call center, who told me that they were unable to reach anyone at the local office to deal with my complaint. Nonetheless, they would make certain that management at the local office would reach me within the next 24 hours to deal with my "understandable concerns".
24 hours later, I have had no contact. So, I just phoned the company again and this time got the local office. I asked them to look up my account. They did so. I asked if they had anything to say to me. They told me that they knew that my furnace had just been inspected and my capacitor replaced. I asked about a note for management to call me. Nothing. I asked to speak to management. They resisted for a bit but relented and put me on hold. Three minutes later they returned and told me that unfortunately there was no management available. I queried that. I was told that management all left the local office at 4:00 p.m. It was now 4:45 p.m.
I am disgusted with this company. They scammed me, straight and simple. They gouged me with a 12x margin on an easily accessible part and charged my a high rate for a job that was a fraction of the job that they had already been paid to complete. They misdirected me when I complained, promised me followup but didn't act upon any of it, and put me into a hold pattern when I persisted, avoiding any accountability. Avoid this company. Avoid One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning. Use anyone else, it will be a better result for you.
