Ty Salazar is a nice guy, very knowledgeable, and a great kitchen designer. The work that eventually got done was of high quality, and his people were very responsive to our requests. The problem was in the scheduling and timing. Essentially, Ty seemed to lose touch with the project about halfway through, and that's where it all went south. We had timed everything so that the work would get done over the summer and we'd have a functional (if not 100% complete) kitchen by Labor Day, after which the kids would be back in school and we needed a working kitchen. I asked about this repeatedly and was repeatedly told that this would happen. I pushed hard to get all of the materials and appliances ordered so that they would be delivered on time. Well, we went away for 2 weeks before Labor Day, and when we got back, the work was nowhere near complete -- yet I was invoiced for the completion of the project. Several times I asked for a project schedule, not once was I given one. I gather that part of the problem was that we had to have permits for plumbing and electrical work and the "prima donna" behavior of the licensed plumber and electrician, who didn't show up when they were supposed to, left jobs uncompleted, etc. At any rate, we didn't have a working kitchen until late September, and the finishing cosmetic work took another few weeks to finish up. The final piece of the puzzle, a shelf that had to be custom made for a corner base cabinet, wasn't ready until January, and I got so tired of waiting for it to be delivered that I went out to Forest Hills myself to pick it up. No question about it, we love the new kitchen. But I was really not happy with the timeliness or the lack of communication over the scheduling.

The job started well but it wasn't finished with the level of detail or professionalism I would have expected, especially given some of the stellar reviews on here. I hired them because I believed they would be meticulous. They take on a lot of work and the subcontractor was on the job most of the time (in fact there were many days where there was just a sub-sub contractor here). They only came by about once a week which meant that when mistakes were made, I was almost always the one responsible for catching them. They also were not the most punctual, so I often waited hours for them to come by on the day they did plan to stop by. I could tell when things went wrong aesthetically (like when they used two different colors of grout on my back splash) but I wouldn't have known if the construction was faulty (they hung our medicine cabinet without sinking them so it fell off the wall a few months after the job was done). There are things I am only just now discovering, like wired were just taped together instead of being soldered. I expected more regular supervision which would have saved them from making and then repairing a lot of things. It also would have made me feel more confident in their work. They didn't use silicon to seal the joint between our counters and back splash which is industry standard. Eventually they sent someone back to fix it at my insistence, but they used the wrong color silicon and they just put it over the existing grout. Consequently it has already started peeling off. They also did not use painter's tape when adding the silicon so we have a thick line of silicon that covers part of our backsplash and looks very "DIY." Every time they sent someone back to fix it, it seemed to get worse but neither the owner nor the VP came to oversee the work. We also paid $1000 for "custom" under-cabinet lights, which had to be installed 3 times and were nothing more than a $70 strip of lights from Home Depot (I know because I saw the handyman they sent walk in with a bag from home depot and I saw the receipt). To install these lights, they drilled huge holes in our cabinets, chipped our backsplash and taped lights to the back of our cabinets, so you can see the glow coming from within the cabinetry when they are on. They also taped the wires together, which I have since been told could cause the light to short and is not a good idea. There were several other more polished and professional ways these lights could have been handled and for $1000, I expect something much better than what we got. Towards the end, I got the impression they wanted to finish our job and didn't want to invest the time or money into finishing the job properly. Lastly, one of our cabinets came missing a shelf and instead of ordering a new one for us, they cut a cheap one out of plywood. I emailed requesting the shelf we paid for multiple times, only to be told it wasn't supposed to come with that size cabinet (even though every single other one of our cabinets of the same size have that number of shelves). I have called, texted, emailed and even stopped in multiple times since the job was finish to request they fix these details. Every time I have been told they will look for a design solution or schedule a time to fix the work but they never follow through. At this point, I have to pay even more money to hire someone else to come in and make the fixes. It is unfortunate that they couldn't have handled the details with more care because we would have been happy with the job had they not completely stopped caring towards the end.

We hired On The Level based on reviews in AngiesList. Ty Salazar is a nice guy and a great kitchen designer, but the fact that he was over an hour late to our initial meeting with him should have tipped us off. The quality of the work was excellent, and his people were always responsive to our requests and questions. It's the scheduling and timing that I had big problems with. We had timed the project so that it would get done over the summer and that we'd have a functionally working kitchen by Labor Day, after which the kids would be back in school. I worked very hard to ensure that all of the materials were ordered and delivered before they were needed. But Ty seemed to loose touch with the project around the middle of the summer, and that's when things went south. We went away for two weeks at the end of the summer, expecting to have a functional kitchen when we got back. When we returned, the kitchen was definitely not done. Not not only that but Ty invoiced me for the final payment, apparently without understanding that it wasn't finished. We did not have a working kitchen until late September, and the final cosmetics took a few weeks after that. The last piece was a shelf for a corner base cabinet, which took until the following January to be done correctly (after two failed attempts). I think part of the problem was that we had to get permits for the electrical and plumbing work, and the licensed electrician and plumber were both "prima donnas" who didn't come when they were supposed to, left the site without finishing the job, etc. Yet at several points in the project I asked for a schedule and was never given one, instead merely repeatedly assured that the project would be done on schedule (which it wasn't). We do seriously love the kitchen. Again, quality was never less than excellent. But the schedule problems went far beyond the usual 1-2 weeks late that you expect for projects like this.

The install a new central AC system and Johan was great. 7. Ty designed a custom closet system for my wife and had it installed, well thoughout use of the space!! Listen, these guys were Dynamite!!!! The are responsible !!! And if they cant make it work they let you know Ty was available at all times of the days even on Sundays which i was surprised, I was skeptical with any contractor but Ty is so personable and friendly you cant help but love his attitude. Im hiring him now to do my bathroom renovation and install a new entry door in my home. Ty gets it done period. Id like to give a shout out to his men they were great oh by the way my bed got delivered when i was on vacation, Ty got in his van drove to my house and put it in his van since they delivered to the front door and left it there.

They did a lousy job from beginning to end. No contact for weeks to come back with drawings and did so only after reminders. Then, additional delays to get permits and approvals that they, as the experts with experience, didn’t tell me about. Then during demolition a sewage pipe developed a slit-shaped hole (about the size of the blade of a hydraulic hammer blade) that they insisted was there before demolition occurred. Anything that causes changes to the contract is immediately due in full—so out-of -pocket costs can be considerable with no forewarning. Demolition, by the way, shook the building so much that the upstairs co-op owner suffered damage to his bathroom. We had to go to the contractor’s insurance company to get the damage paid for. The wrong wall tile delivery further delayed the process and when all was finally complete they had used the wrong cap on the tile. Finally with the right tile being used the job was supposedly complete. The light fixture over the mirror was off center and the contractor insisted that structurally they couldn’t mount it in the correct place. At my insistence, they investigated and found that putting it in the right location was easily accomplished. More importantly, the wall tiles weren’t flat and floor tiles were sloppily placed. The contractor insisted that the uneven wall tile placement was due to underlying walls being uneven even though the walls had been replaced by them as part of the remodeling process. Even if this explanation were true, it would not explain how tiles right next to each other would stick up. The floors tiles were also sloppily placed and the explanation that this was due to settling during the drying process doesn’t explain why this floor is so much worse than any of dozens of other similar floors I have seen. After several revisits they fixed some of the worst of the wall tile problems but many problems remain and I eventually gave up trying to get them to respond. Overall, I am very unhappy with the quality of the workmanship, how the job was managed, and the final cost and would not recommend this company.

"I want to thank Mr. [Member Name Removed] for giving us his business. As explained to you when you came into the office for your design consult there would be things that would be out of our control and it seems you are blaming a lot of that on us. When it comes to the design process you received a $400 service for free. I went out to your apartment meet with your tenant and had a phone interview with you while measuring your bathroom and taking pictures because you lived in a completely different state and I wanted to help make this process as easy and stress free on you as possible. The plumbing permits which you were told you would need from day one because you were alerting your foot print when you decided to move your tub and toilet. At that moment you were aware that heavy demo would have to take place as we would have to break up the concrete floor to access the drain pipes. At this point as stated in your alteration agreement it was your responsibility to make your neighbors aware that there would be construction going on and that they should prep which was not done as I had to address one of the other tenants because they were unaware of the project, even with that notice we still did the right thing and had you neighbor compensated and the damage repaired. When it comes to the delay no one in my company or my licensed plumber can force the NYC DOB into scheduling an inspection. My self and my plumber stayed in contact with you every couple of days(via phones calls, text message, and email) with updates on the inspection we even notified you when they cancelled and reschedule. The damage to your pipes which were imbedded in the cement ground you even saw your self the wound to the pipe was old and showed no signs of current damage, which in turn I helped you get the building to cover the fees to repair not only that pipe but your vent lines that were not up to code. As for your tile I had you on the phone the day I went to go pick up your tile and you herd your self the sales rep tell me that they sold my tile which had been paid for already, to a different contractor who had bought out the whole stock until March the following year. After a couple weeks of searching I finally found the tile you wanted and had them installed. Once all delays were resolved the production moved fast as per your request so you could move in a new tenant. We had to rush through our work because of your needs to have the space occupied. As you stated even when you were not happy with some of the tile we came back out and fixed it to you liking never saying no we cant do that. Even at the end of the project your disappearance for three weeks and not responding to any ones calls until a lean was in process on your building made it difficult to warp things up, which is why we refunded you over $2,000 dollars so you could hire some one you felt would re-grout the tiles which was your last request of us before we closed your project. I understand this was not your easy one two three bathroom renovation, but I feel your grade is a little unfair as most of the delays were caused do to vendors and the city not my production. I have plenty of messages were you are thanking me for my help and guidance and it appears you have not taken any of the good into account which is fine. Again we appreciate you giving us the opportunity to work for you, thank you."

Just want to thank the people at On the Level Design and Construction LLC. From the moment i met Ty years ago hes always been a honest and caring guy. He really takes the time to explain all parts of the project, how things are installed and the different products and applications that can be used. This is the second renovation Ty has done for me, and he is really on top of business. I love the fact that i didn't have to go anywhere else, he has a large selection of pretty much everything for the kitchen and bath projects, I did have to go to a plumbing supply house to choose some fixtures, but that's what my wife wanted, she has expensive taste. But overall He literally does the measurements him self and designs the whole thing in front of your eyes on his computer. He spent numerous hours coming up with the right design and supplied all the products, we had some holidays that pushed the delivery but thats understandable, The best thing i can say is that he stands behind his work and we had some damages done on delivery and he quickly rectified the situation. I just want to say, i love giving back to our military, and i can see Ty is proud of his service. If your looking for a good contractor thats honest and will do anything to satisfy the customer, visit On The Level Design and Construction. Henry

Just want to say how happy I was with Ty Salazar the owner of On the Level,  Hes a true gentlemen and made me feel so comfortable.  He was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything to me.  I had 3 quotes from other contractors but they seemed annoyed when i asked them questions about the quotations.  Let me say my house is old and needed major repair, Ty explained that things can happen and that unforeseen issues may arise and they sure did,  He stopped work when we found lead in the pipes and he fixed it in a decent time, he found issues that i wasn't aware that weren't to code and he had the licensed professionals there to fix that.  Only thing i wasn't aware of was permits that may arise, but they showed me the invoices and let me make the decision.   <br>Hes a one stop shop and i like that because the other contractor who was in the same price range was sending me by myself all over the place.   <br>He also handled getting me a couple new windows which I love.  His tradesmen were clean and his VP David Bryant and Nick Kontos were always available to talk to when he wasn't available. <br>Im retired and I am not easy to deal with but they always smiled and explained things to me. <br>I LOVE MY NEW HOUSE and thank you Ty Salazar and thank you for your service to this country. <br>PS my neighbor is so jealous i completed my renovation before her.   <br>Dont go anywhere else go to on the level design and construction. <br>They were a little more than the other contractor but they were worth it. <br> <br> <br>

These guys are the best! Ty and his team are amazing and so professional. This was our first time with a renovation like this so we were nervous from the start but you can tell they were the right guys. They kept us at ease and aware of everything every step of the way. They had a great vision for our renovation and suggested a design for our kitchen that we absolutely loved. They were proactive when we first started the project sending us different renderings with options that gave us great ideas and things to consider. They were more ahead of the timing than we were which was comforting. My neighbors were so impressed by their professionalism and work and over the course of the renovation my neighbors were leaving notes to ask Ty and his team for similar work on their apartments. My wife and I are very picky and they made all the accommodations we asked for made sure everything was taken care of and even redid things when they or we felt we wanted something different. They were so friendly and came back a few times after they were done with the project to make sure we were good or update some things that we asked for late in the game. I absolutely recommend them and would use them again. No need to look around, Ty, David, Nick and the crew rock! <br />

After months of delaying a much needed gut bathroom renovation, my husband and I were ready to finally jump in and get started in very late November 2015.  After countless hours spent researching both design options and contractors, we selected On The Level due to their overwhelmingly positive Angie's List reviews and their great website.    <br /> David Bryant came to our home and discussed our design and product options (we have a standard, small NYC style bathroom). After an honest estimate and assessment of the scope of the work, we were provided with a comprehensive emailed estimate that included both labor and materials. Considering that my husband and I had looked at hundreds of tile options, shower configurations and bathroom fixtures both online and in store for months prior to meeting David, I was very pleased with the way On The Level worked.  I really liked this idea-the quoted budget included parts <strong>and</strong> labor.  By directing us to a supplier website, On The Level essentially guided us in the right direction and we were able to pick out the entire bathroom from scratch from an extensive range of products and manufacturers. Once our products were selected, we went to On The Level's office to meet with David to discuss product availability as well as the aesthetics of our selected pieces and arrange a timeline of the work to be done. <br /> As stated previously, this was a gut bathroom renovation, and I couldn't have been more impressed with the honesty and trustworthiness of the workers on our job.   Our old bathroom had to be completely ripped out and we were concerned we might be told there were unplanned extras or "issues" which weren't part of the quote (which happens all too often with unscrupulous contractors.)  However, the staff at On The Level were forthright and totally honest and told us the foundation was in good standing and therefore there were no hidden extras.  <br /> When the renovation first kicked off, we came home on day one to see that all our floors and doorways were carefully covered with plastic tarp, and our 2 sets of stairs and front door were also papered so as to ensure against damage.  It was obvious the staff at On The Level were very courteous and extremely conscientious and it was for this reason that we trusted the workers to work alone and unsupervised during the day.  We had keys copied for the workers so they could come and go as needed, and we left on vacation for a week during the renovation because we completely trusted the crew. <br /> By the completion of the project, we ended up with a beautiful bathroom and overall a great experience.  On The Level did not rush the job; if anything, they took their time to ensure their work was perfect.  It is for this reason we anticipate using On The Level for our kitchen renovation in the near future.  David Bryant and the entire staff at On The Level are trustworthy, honest, reliable and fair.  Thank you David and crew!!  We appreciate everything you did for us. <br />

The staff was friendly and easy to work with. David, the partner, designed the kitchen of my dreams, the workers were super friendly, helpful and did a great job and Ty, the owner, made sure it all came together. The job took longer than anticipated by about 4 weeks, which was frustrating, but they were the only company that came up with a fantastic design to transform my (formerly ) awkwardly shaped kitchen. We still can't believe this is our kitchen and for that, I'd go through the process all over again. Had to add thanks to jamira, the office administrator , who was super responsive and always kept me in the loop. I didn't want to not include her as she was the first person to respond whenever I called. One thing to note, unless you know your electrical wiring is current, get your own electrician. As with every general contractor, they'll upgrade your electrical but won't replace your wiring if it's old. We had cloth insulated wiring and ended up getting our own electrician mid project to ensure the wires were replaced. Every general contractor will tell you not to worry about electrical and not completely overhaul it so I won't hold that against them.

I visited Ty at his showroom  and we discussed the bathroom renovation from start to finish. He had lots of tile samples, as well as cabinets and vanities, which made things easier instead of going to visit various vendors. He was clear, prompt and professional. His timeline from start to finish was pretty accurate. He catered to all our inquiries and requests and came by often to check the progression of the work. I couldn't be happier with how the bathroom turned out and I'm extremely pleased with the entire process as a whole. I would definitely recommend Ty and his crew to anybody looking for a great product at a reasonable price. <br />

We worked with a friendly and respectful group. They were truly nice people to have around. They scheduled the job at our convenience and finished reasonably promptly. And, in the end, we got a pretty, new kitchen that, we expect, is built to last. That is the good news. <br /> Not-so-good: We needed to be on site and vigilant. In their haste, the men kept slipping up. <br /> During demo, our stairwell was left unprotected and got badly banged up. Tiles were set out of alignment. We intervened just in time to prevent a  workman from punching a hole in the wall for the hood vent in a totally wrong place. The foreman had not even opened the box to inspect the unit and review installation instructions. Many issues with the countertop subcontractors, who worked completely unsupervised by On The Level. When they arrived to deliver the first time, the fabricators hadn't brought enough men to lift the larger piece, and were about to cut it in half for their own convenience when we intervened. We sent them away. When they returned, we had to point out to them that the second piece was cut wrong--it left a big gap between counter and wall. WE had to do this, as no one from On The Level was ever on site when the counter men were here. <br /> What the team could fix, they fixed--quickly and cheerfully. So, OK. Except our kitchen door can't open all the way anymore, because the measurements for the new cabinets were off. And there's a seam in the counter that's too prominent and not where we'd have wanted it, had we been asked. Neither flaw is a big deal for us. So the "C" rating not so much about the outcome than it is about the stressful character of the experience. For the price we paid, it should have gone more smoothly. <br /> <br /> <br />
Response from On The Level Design & Construction LLC
"[Member Name Removed], just want to thank you and [Member Name Removed] again for the business and as we discussed the minor issues that occurred, I discussed with [Member Name Removed] in the kitchen quite a few times how things occur and as to why they do. The stair well while careful bring in cabinetry that way was difficult spacing to bring cabinets in and I did offer after looking at the scuff in the wall to spackle them and paint them at no charge to you, as we discussed you were getting a painter to paint the kitchen anyhow, but I did offer without hesistation to repaint the small areas where it was scuffed, unfortunately this happens. The tiles which were set out of alignment on the splash was rectified, but also difficult to install because the tiles were hand scraped tiles and the walls were the old sheetrock walls and not very level but as you asked we did our best with what was there. The vent location was a communication error, but thankfully it was looked at and rectified. as far as the countertop install, I had discussion with the fabricator as to the install and some of issues, and he gladly fixed the issues when they arised, at times the trades come in and do there job when someone from my team is not there, this does happen occasionally but I understand your concern. The issue with the door hitting the countertop, was really unseen as we measured and tried to get as much room with the custom cabinets and we were off by 5/8" which does occur when dealing with a not so level surface, but I offered to install a brand new door with a new frame and or customize your current one, which you declined The seam in the countertop is unavoidable as quartz pieces only come certain sizes, yes I agree we could of discussed the seam location, but we wanted it in the least visible location and definitely not by a water source, so by the stove I thought was a better location I apologize the renovation was stressful, but as discussed most renovation are... Thank you both again, and I appreciate the feedback. Ty Salazar"

My parents, who are both in their eighties asked me to find a contractor to do some upgrade work in their kitchen. Most of the initial contractors I found didn't want a small job or showed up, but never got back to them. It was very important that I found someone they trusted & were comfortable working with, especcially because I was not able to be there during the project. Finally I gave advised them to call On The Level Design & Construction. They went to the showroom & were made to feel at ease. They were not pressured and the whole experience was a pleasure. My parents picked out the materials that were to be installed and a gentleman named Gano came out to do all measurements. Most of the work was done by Jr. who I was told went above & beyond to make sure my parents were satisfied. New countertops & backsplash were installed. A new sink was added. The old wall panel was removed & new sheetrock put up, as well as molding. Everything was painted. A pipe in need of repair was fixed under the sink. I recently went to my parents home and I want to thank On The Level & Jr. , the kitchen looks great. Mom & Dad were not just pleased with the workmanship, but the promptness & neatness of the contractor. They were kept informed at every phase of the project. On behalf of my parents and myself I want to again say thank you to all the folks at On The Level. I will recommend your services to family & friends. <br />

My wife and I decided to remodel our kitchen at the beginning of <br /> this year. It was a gut renovation which entailed removing a wall, re-wiring of <br /> the electrical, and re-locating appliances and the plumbing. Once we met Ty we <br /> knew he was our guy. He has a keen eye for design, understands form and <br /> function, and is a creative problem solver. Plus he worked very well with my <br /> wife during the initial planning stages, which was very important to us since <br /> she would be the project manager for the job. <br /> Once the job started Junior and Efraim always came to the house on <br /> time and always left the job site in a very clean and organized manner. Given <br /> the scope and time of the job (3 months) I was prepared for problems, change <br /> orders, etc?But we ran into very few problems and when we did Ty always <br /> resolved the issue to our satisfaction; nothing was impossible for him and his <br /> crew which we love. <br /> If you are looking for a kitchen/bathroom/house renovation, look <br /> no further than Ty Salazar and On the Level! We can?t sing his praises enough.  <br /> <br /> <br />

After a horrendous experience with an unscrupulous contractor who was fixing our vacation home after super storm sandy on Long Beach, NY the president, Ty Salazar, came to our rescue. He was just what we needed at that point. He keeps a professional staff who does high quality work. They were able to correct poorly completely construction. He has excellent communication with us and so does Tammy, our main builder.  She is extremely knowledgeable and meticulous and very helpful with solving problems. They are totally honest and I have full confidence in their ability. They were able to take a messed up construction and make it a beautiful house again. He renewed my faith in humanity.

<p>Ty and his crew were absolutely great to deal with from start to finish. Ty's kitchen design was perfect. He worked well with the coop's management company. Ty was a pleasure to deal with, and was very responsive to all texts and phone calls, no matter the time of day. Any concerns were  immediately addressed.  His workers were courteous, professional and efficient.  The kitchen and dinette were truly transformed into an amazing space.  I would highly recommend Ty and his workers. </p> <br />
