We talked about the terms on October 3rd the same day I signed the contract. He promised that the work would start on October 7th. When he did not show on that day, I was texting him and many of which he did not answer and after that intermittently would answer and promise that he would be coming and kept putting me off. When we initially talked about the work before I signed the contract and gave him his down payment he was so sure that he could come on October 7th. He is located out of town and I asked him if that would be difficult for him to come here to complete the job and he said, "No I'm in Muskegon all the time". They finally came and put a new roof on it. On that day, he texted me and told me just to put the remaining balance in an envelope and give it to his main roofer. This was before the job was even done. I told him I just gotten home and his workers were not finished with the job. I told him I was not going to pay him until the job was complete and I was satisfied with the work. After the job was complete, I immediately noticed issues. The garage had a ridge vent and I told him that and immediately he denied that there was even one there. I told him he could find it in the trailer dumpster that was still in my driveway. The edges were sticking out on the drip edge some of the shingles were buckled and on one side the shingles were too far over the edge and around the rest of it they weren't far enough over the edge. initially he was supposed to come and collect his check but then I texted him on October 17th which was the day before he was supposed to come and get paid. At that time I told him I had decided to hold off and get a second opinion from another roofing business. He ended up showing up at my door the next day acting as if he never got the text even though on my end it said that he received it. After this point he became unresponsive to my texts. Prior to signing the contract, I asked him if he needed a permit and he said no. After the work was completed I received a letter from Muskegon Township's Building Department stating that they were aware that work was done on my property that required a permit. I called them and told them the roofer said a permit was not needed. The building inspector contacted him and told him he needed a permit. He called to inquire about getting a permit on the 20th and he didn't apply for the permit until the 30th. I've asked him multiple times for proof of licensure which is required in the state and insurance. I still have not received either one. I reached out to the Muskegon Township Building inspector office and they offered to reach out to him which they did. He did contact me by text on 11/3 and told me I was doing nothing but wasting his time and the building inspectors time. He refused to deal with any of the issues that I presented to him that were discovered in the inspection report. He is now totally unresponsive to any communication.
