First, Pete did none of the work himself. He contracted it and did not oversee his contractor. The contractor did a horrible job. He initially re-laid the bricks unevenly. I had to point this out to Pete. He apparently thought I would accept uneven bricks as okay. The contractor did re-lay the bricks but he dropped big globs of concrete into the bottom of our pool while repairing the bricks. We had to point this out to Pete. He did not even notice it himself. As it turns out, Pete is not insured and could in no way cover the cost of what is now an expensive repair. Lesson learned - don't hire anyone who is not insured. We still have huge globs of concrete on the bottom of our pool in multiple locations. This occurred early last spring. Just saw Pete on Angie's list while I am searching for someone to correct his work so I felt like it was important to post a review. We informed Pete he was not allowed to step foot on our property ever again. The pool coping was also done very poorly.

Pete came to the rescue! He is extremely resourceful, honest, and provides solid work. We saved a ridiculous amount of money by working with him! Since we began working on the pool in March, we were not in a time crunch to have the pool repaired and open, and therefore were super flexible with timing etc. We plan to hire Pete again to close/open our pool.

He charged $200 per month and was supposed to check the pool weekly, since most of the time that he worked for us was during the winter, he didn't have much to do. When it became warm, we had to constantly follow-up with him to get him to take care of the pool. He would say he was coming and not show up. When we returned from vacation last Saturday the pool was green, and our guests that had been staying at our house during those two weeks were unable to enjoy the backyard, he obviously didn't make his weekly visit.

He finally said he couldn't provide the service that we needed, therefore we have spent 1,200+ for essentially nothing because the pool has not been useable since he has been servicing it, due to the winter months and now because it was filthy.

Response from Pete's Pool Service
"This is a hard review to respond to due to the confusion of the owner as to what was expected. Yes, I maintained the pool mostly during the winter and fall, and that involved mostly leaf removal and blowing of the surrounding area. I had absolutely no complaints during these times except the owner said they were having a leak problem and had one for a long time. I do not do leak detection but suggessted and scheduled a company to find and fix it.... In the meantime my partner and I tried to help fix the problem with marine silicone caulk, which did not work, and for which the client was not charged a dime. The pool was always sparkling and I never had a complaint until this "inability of the guests to enjoy the back yard"" ocurred. I never heard of this problem until the owners returned, and fixed it and made the pool and spa beautiful within 2 hours. I could go on with the other issues alleged by these clients, but, there is no point. I am reluctant to say so but there are client that cannot be pleased under any circumstance. In this case there seemed to be one person who "ran the show" and another who tried to "carry out the commands". I only met [Member name removed] one time. I must say that I am relieved to have no responsibility for these clients' pool and can be contacted directly regarding any money they felt was wasted. They should be ashamed. Peter Hable, Owner"

pete was on time for the first time we meet. i like that. he was hired to clean my pool which i failed to cover up and pre-winterize the pool. he shocked the pool until all the green algae was all gone and the water was clear once again. i also had them service the pool filtration pump and asked him to cover the pool up to prevent debris from falling in. petes a great guy and has been responsive to all my emails. i would hire in again.
We had Pete come out and do a pre-purchase inspection, which he was able to perform without issue. After buying the home I tried to set up a weekly service with Pete and was excited to have him come over and help with the maintenance of our new pool. After a few phone discussion and texts we agreed on a time and date for him to start servicing the pool. Pete seemed like a nice honest guy, and I initially had no concerns.
Pete failed to make it to our first appointment and 4 subsequent rescheduled dates. I totally understand the need to be flexible. I understand that peoples schedules can become unmanageable when unknown problems arise. If you can't make it to an appointment, just let me know. All good, no problem. The issue arises when you tell me 4 times that you will "make it tomorrow". The last text I received was, "Sorry, stuck on a southside job. Tomorrow for sure!". Never heard from him again and decided to just quit trying. All follow up I received from Pete had to be initiated by an inquiry from me.
I wanted to like Pete, and I'm sure he knows how to take care of a pool. Some major work needs to be done in regards to Time management and customer communication.

Response from Pete's Pool Service
"This client is correct in that I am guilty of poor communication in this matter. I must also say, though, in my own defense, that I managed to work this inspection into my schedule despite the fact that this was the busiest time of the year, and I was swamped with work for clients that I have served for years. I did this because it was the last day of the client's inspection period before buying the home. A previous inspector had estimated that $ 28,000.00 worth of work needed to be done to bring the pool up to code. I discovered that very little of this work was necessary, and the rest was an attempt to perform work that was not necessary. The client was elated with the results, thought I had to tell him over the phone, due to the fact that he did not even show up at the inspection as he had agreed to do. I do apologize to this client for the lack of communication, but ONLY for that. I performed all other aspects of this work with professionalism, quality, and timeliness. I do not deserve to receive a grade of F for my overall performance, and will be glad to discuss this with any prospective client that contacts me. I believe this grade is not accurate, but vindictive."

"I enjoyed working with this client very much and thank her for the positive review. The scheduling problems were due largely to the fact that the job basically scheduled by her next-door neighbor, which added another layer of difficulty in scheduling and communication. That said, I think everyone was pleased with the quality of the finished project."

I received 3 estimates for replacing just the pump motor or to get a new motor and pump as recommended by Pete. His bid was a bit higher than the other two, and just for the combined system. I'm glad I went with that as he found another problem with the old pump after replacing it that would have created a problem later. Pete also fixed some sensors that had been causing intermittent problems due to cracks in the wires. The diagnostic visit, ordering of the parts and the installation went quite smoothly and the system has worked perfectly for nearly a year since we had the work done. I would recommend Pete very highly to anyone who wants to have confidence that their pool equipment is in good shape.
I had an Appointment to have Pete come to our
pool on May 8th and do the work we spoke about. I thought he would be arriving
on May 9th as discussed but no, I heard from him on May 12 -(this should have
been my clue)
May 12th Pete set a text to me "will be at the house late today or
early tomorrow " -
May 13th Pete "began cleaning up pool, added clearning and settling agents.
Will return Thursday to continue. Thx! Pete.
MAY 14 - 6am ? we woke up with NO
WATER IN OUR POOL.
The failed attempts to show up and excuses killed me. These text messages speak
for themselves. I just wonder why if there were so many "issues" with
our pool it wasn't brought the our attention prior to him cleaning the pool.
June 9 @ 10:35am (from me)
Peter, I have to tell you I'm so disappointed in what has
transpired at our home in sandy springs. After speaking to you and confirming
what you planned to do I never believed we would be worse off having worked
with you - I still can't wrap my head around the fact that you adding chemicals
lead to no water in our pool.

Your lack of professionalism is shocking to me and
disappointing. I am giving you the courteous of writing this to you prior to
posting this on angie?s list and Facebook.

I need a solution, and not one that allows you to back
out of your responsibly for screwing up a situation. Also, the water bill will
need to be handled as well. If you do
not want to complete what you started (because your office is too far) my
suggestion is to not only reimburse us for the water bill, but also cover the
cost of the new pool company we have to hire. I will wait to hear from you by
EOB.
June 9 @ 5:24pm (from Pete)

I am also
disappointed in the way things turned out.

Your proposal for reparations is unreasonable and
unacceptable.

As for your decision to threaten me regarding Angie's
List and/or Facebook, I have no comment, and am certainly willing to engage you
in those forums.

I have no idea what EOB means.

June 9 @ 5:36pm (from me)

I am not threatening you; I am giving the opportunity to
do the right thing. You think it is unreasonable to except someone to complete
a job? If you are disappointed then do something about it. You left in the
middle of a job because it is too far from your office? How does one add
chemicals equal a pool is empty the next morning? EOB means end of business.

June 9 @ 6:13pm (from Pete)
The draining of the pool, whether you
understand it or not, was a blessing in disguise for you.
It revealed such algae and filth on the walls and floor that no amount of
chemicals would have ultimately made the pool sanitary. As compensation, I had
the pool acid washed and bleached. The normal cost of that work would be $
1,000., which you can confirm with any competent contractor. That work was made
necessary due to total in attention to the pool all winter. You were not
charged a dime, all the work was done at MY expense. The cost of the water to
refill the pool is NEVER the responsibility of the contractor.
After all this, I made three additional trips to try and
find the source of the leak, including paying a leak detection specialist $
150. To help. My men cleaned a HUGE
amount of leaves out of the overflow moat to find the drains to see if they
were the problem.
In terms of my fulfillment of responsibility on your job,
you, sir show an unbelievable lack of understanding of the efforts made by my
company to resolve your problem. I made a business decision to stop the
bleeding, and would do so again. As you said, end of business, end of
conversation.

June 9 @ 6:20pm (from Me)
News flash, you were hired to do a job, you didn't do it.
Sorry you had to make special trips to complete a job, thing is you still
emptied the pool by mistake, I still have a water bill and no pool. Amazing...

"I don't know the person who wrote this review, I always dealt with a man who lived at the house, but I know I can't use client names in responding to reviews. I can summarize the events regarding this pool, and I do regret that things didn't work out well, either for me or the client. We definately have different perspectives on what happend. A. I did provide the client with a price to clean up his pool, and began adding chemicals the same day. The next day he called me and said his pool was drained of water. B. I came out the next day to see what the cause might be, couldn't find any possible way it had drained, The pool has a "closed" system with a cartridge filter, and the only thing that could drain the pool was a broken pipe not visible to us, or opening a drain valve on the filter. There was no evidence that the filter drain had been opened. C. I hired a leak expert at my own expense to come out and search for the source of the leak, and he was not able to find the source. D. Since the pool was already drained, I acid washed and bleached to get the algae off the walls and floor. I didn't ask for or receive any money for this cleaning, which would cost approx. $ 700.00 under normal circumstances. The pool was subsequently refilled with water, and was ready for use for the holiday. I visited the pool on that weekend and the children were playing in the pool and the client seemed to be pleased. E. I don't use contracts in my business, so that either party may terminate service at any time. I explained to this client that all things considered, I would prefer that he hire another service. F. I received no compensation for my work on cleaning the pool up, or my efforts to find the cause of the problem. I feel that I bent over backwards to solve this problem, but couldn't continue to spend so much time and money in that effort. I operate a small company, and so my time is limited as far as spending so much time on one problem. I feel I fulfilled my part of the deal, and as I said I received no money at all for all my efforts. If anyone would like to contact me personally regarding this matter, I would be glad to explain it further. I have never cheated anyone in my business, and never will. I feel that the other reviews regarding my work would bear that out. Thank you for reading my side of the story, Pete Hable Pete's Pool Service"

Pete and his crew did a great job. After the basic task of replacing the pool motor, Pete's crew re-attached the fallen tile and re-grouted all the waterline tile. They also re-mortared all of the stonework on the spa and the stone coping. Once the work was completed Pete walked the job with me to ensure I was satisfied with the quality of work. There were a few areas where the stone mortar was a little bit messy, so Pete made a separate trip to take care of it so that we were completely satisfied. I have recommended Pete to my neighbors and would recommend Pete to anyone who needs personal attention to their pool.

He is a real great guy. I am super pleased with his performance. He got me a pool covering, and he had to measure it out himself and everything. He sent them, and then they came back, and he installed it. He really got that pool in excellent shape for me. I think I found him through Angie’s List, but I am not 100 percent sure.

We bought a house with a pool last year and Pete came to our rescue. We'd never been pool owners and the pool was working perfectly when we closed on the house. My husband figured he could keep it going. The pumped started working sporadically, algae grew like crazy. We called Pete to check it out and couldn't quite figure out what was wrong with the pump. Turned out to be electrical which an electrician came to to fix. In the meantime, the pool really became algae filled. It took multiple visits to get everything up and running again and Pete was awesome about doing it all. He basically had to reopen the pool for us but that was fine. We toyed with the idea of having him come regularly but we're do it yourself-ers so once he got it going we took over from there. I love that this is a small company and that Pete was really accessible. We'll probably call him for help again this year. :-)

He was not able to maintain the pool. He's nice a guy but he's having a health problem.
Response from Pete's Pool Service
"I'm not sure how to respond this review, but will try my best. I don't have any health problems, and I'm not sure what that has to do with anything about the pool. This is a very old (over 20 years) pool. I had no problem maintaining the pool until I fixed the Polaris cleaner, which hadn't been operating for a long time, and which I believe caused the water to turn cloudy due to the fact that the pool had been painted some time ago, and had become chalky (you could feel the paint and see a cloud of dust puff up). I was in the process of leaving the Polaris out of the pool for a week when the customer called and said they were getting a new service. I had come to service the pool twice a week for many weeks trying to figure out the problem, and spent a lot of money on extra chemicals (floculents, phosphate removers) to try and solve the problem, and never charged extra for any of it. I had performed service 3 times in the month prior to being replaced, but insisted that I would not charge for those visits because the customer was not satisfied. I thought we had come to an amenable separation; I dealt almost exclusively with the husband of this customer, and am disappointed that he couldn't have offered a more objective view of the situation. In any event, I regret that I could not solve the problem, but it was not for the lack of trying my best and being persistent."

"I initially came to this client's home early on a Saturday morning to prepare his pool for a party. I was unable to return the next week due to a death in the family. I left a message on his answering machine stating the reason for my missing the next service date, and expressed my regret, and said I completely understood if he wished to find another service provider, and that there would be no charge for the first service either way. I received no response, and can't understand why he couldn't contact me in that I have a phone with answering service and also an email address. I regret the misunderstanding, and my apology to this client."

I initially called Pete because we'd blown a pump in our pump house. It being Sunday, I was pleasantly surprised when Pete responded promptly via phone and arranged a time to come by the next day to take stock of our problem. Over the course of the next month, Pete worked diligently to update our pump house machinery and corrected all the minor issues associated with having a poorly maintained pool. He was candid about our problems and provided written estimates for each task he believed needed to be done. When we'd agreed to have him undertake a project, it was done in a timely manner by Pete himself. Pete is professional and courteous in the extreme. We've contracted with Pete to conduct regular monthly care of our pool and would recommend him highly to anyone needed a pool service.
The experience wasn’t very well. After they opened the pool, they came for 2 or 3 weeks. Then they stopped coming and stopped communicating with me. I think the pool opening was $300 and it was $50 a week. It’s a small business; it’s just one guy and he has somebody that helps him out. I am assuming that if anything comes up like a family issue or vacations then there is no coverage. I think that might be what I ran into. He had a vacation or whatever it was; he just wouldn’t communicate with me. It’s very small and there is no backup.
Response from Pete's Pool Service
"I am always amazed when a client who claims they were mistreated waits 2 months to call and file a review with Angie's List. I am even more amazed when they grade ALL performance as an F. These are the facts: I opened this client's pool on June 3 and serviced it weekly until July 6, and had NO complaints. The review is correct that at that time I had decided to downsize my company so that I could provide the best in service to the clients I could handle, given the fact that I want to provide personal service. I notified all clients that I could no longer service of this fact, and offered to help with finding them a new provider. I was called by the husband of this client after my last service and told that I need not return, they had found another service. At that time, I had not yet billed for the remaining cost of opening the pool, $ 150., and decided to not bill for that to make up for any inconvenience the client experienced. Yes, I run a small company, and as I said it is because I want to provide the best service I can to my clients on a PERSONAL basis. Yes, I admit I got in over my head, but in no way did any of my clients suffer due to my decision to downsize, either in terms of service or money. I have not had a vacation in the two years since I started this company, and this clients' idea that that was the cause of the problem is completely false. I have NEVER failed to return a call or respond to a client's needs promptly. I'm sure it was easy for this client to list ALL "F" in her review, but in my opinion that was vindictive and completely uncalled for, as 38 of the 41 reviews I have received are all "A". Unfortunately, in the service business one can never make some clients happy no matter how hard they try...and I try very hard. If any prospective client has questions as to this review, please feel free to contact me directly through Angie's List. Thanks for your time in reading my response. Pete Hable"
