May 2015—roof torn off, new roof put on. Looked good. Fast forward to March 22, 2016. I sold my house, the inspector came on March 18, 2016, noted loose flashing around the chimney. (“Flashing on South side is lifting at bottom and needs resecuring.") I called Mr. Pluta about fixing it on March 22, 2016. Mr. Pluta replied on March 23, “I will stop by to investigate and if necessary we will send the technician to repair it.” I didn’t see Mr. Pluta again, didn’t hear from him again, though I tried to communicate with him, explaining that the work had to be done by the closing date of May 9, 2016. I ended up hiring someone else to secure the flashing, paying that person $40. Good job originally; Mr. Pluta did not do the necessary repair less than one year later.

I bought a big deal for this. He did the absolute minimum that he could do to get the job done. He tried as much as possible to try to charge extra money for things. Even afterwards he left the entrance of the garage unpainted. So I had to hire a contractor to come in and paint the inside of the garage door. He also replaced some rotting wood, but left it there unfilled and unpainted so with winter coming on it means that wood is going to rot. He wanted extra money for some of the tiles because he was claiming it was not in the contract. After I purchased the contract I can't get my money back. There is a townhouse that adjoins mine so we both had to pay him because the roof covered both properties. My neighbor is also not happy with this deal. There is no leak anymore.

"You purchased our offer valid for replacement of shingles roof on single garage not on the double garage flat roof. You don't understand what's the different between pitched and flat roof. You buy the offer thinking that you going to get Mercedes for the price of Hyundai..well read the offer one more time. Flat roofs are more complex and more expensive. The flat roof on your side caved in over the front garage door, and you had damaged inside garage as well. The only way to fix the flat roof was to replaced damaged wood over mansard roof including the garage door frame to provide the needed structure support. I told you you would need to hire painter to prime and paint new wood frame. The roof over your unit is connected with the neighbor's roof and unfortunately both roofs had be done at the same time. You were never there during the removal process, and to keep you informed on progress we sent you the pictures of the standing water between your roof plies, the damaged roof insulation and wood deck. Your roof received one of the best single ply membrane (fully adhered EPDM), new metal flashing on mansard roof perimeter. Your roof is sound and is not LEAKING...but you're still complaining."

There was a little confusion at first about the color of shingles, but that was worked out right away. They did a tear off of bad sections of the roof and replaced rotted plywood. Where the skylight is, they took care to use quality materials to prevent leakage around the perimeter and where the roof flattened out they used roll roofing to prevent seepage. They did a good job of cleaning up afterwards and removing the old material. The foreman explained to me what they were going to do beforehand and let me know why they would need to bring in extra plywood. I am very happy with the job that they did and would highly recommend them.
Charmaine Mortensen
I had 4 contractors come out for estimates and the estimates varied widely. Although all were well rated companies, the low to high estimates differed by more than a factor of 2. I chose Pluta construction based on his estimate, reviews and our discussion during the estimate.
We had a problem with the roof leaking into the garage, so we were very anxious to get the job done. Because of the heavy rain that we had during June, the job took longer due to trying to complete sections in between
days of heavv rain. Wesley Pluta did a good job getting the job done and keeping our home dry for the most part.
His workers were very professional, hard working and did high qualtiy work. There was one problem with some water leakage when a torrential downpour occurred during replacing one section of the roof. Wesley Pluta quickly brought some workers to repair the damage.
Pluta Construction is an excellent, very professional high value, high quality company. I would use tham again and I highly recommend them to anyone needing a new roof.
The crew of about 6 men arrived on time and started working around 9 am. One particular member of the crew was very careless
and could have caused an injury accident when he dropped an electric circular saw from the top of the roof to my stoop. I was 3 feet away from where it landed and another crew member was 2 feet away from its path as it dropped. Here are other problems I encountered during the job and afterward:
1- Job site especially the stoop was not covered which caused asphalt residues to stick to stoop. I had to clean and resurface the stoop afterward at $400 cost.
2- There were several asphalt residues on the exterior walls which I had to clean and repaint.
3- The crew broke our electric meter cover and placed it on top of the metal box and didn't inform me of the accident. I discovered the problem several days later when I was inspecting the house during a rainy day. Not letting me know of the accident is particularly irresponsible since the main electric cable and the meter were exposed to rain for 12 hours before I discovered it. I had to call the electric company for a repair and they had to replace the meter.
This was the 2nd time I had work done. Back in April he replaced my roof and I had no hesitation in having him do this phase. Clean, meticulous work. They promised to finish in 2 days and worked late into the evenng to make sure it was completed on schedule. The guys who did the work were also very courteous.
"We are really appreciated your feedback, it was a pleasure to work with you on these 2-projects (roof, soffit & fascia). Thank you."

They came out and fixed a few areas on our roof and then left. Unfortunately, they did not come back to fix the rest. Scheduling for the first time they came out was easy (but obviously not for the second time). I've asked them several times when they're coming back out, but they don't respond.

The roof inspection went well, but I've since realized that most roofers do this for free. I was also hoping for a summary report, but I did not get one. He did give me a quote for a new roof, and scheduling with them was very easy.
Response from Pluta Construction Company
"Below please see the proposal and general description of roof conditions sent to customer as per request. What else could be said? GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS: This is a single-family residence with attached 2-car garage. The roof is a 3-tab composition shingles with 2-layer. The typical life expectancy of this roofing material is 20+ years. The shingles appears to be in less then good condition, the roof deck have visible signs of decking failure and popped wood. That condition makes the roof vulnerable to external weather interference, unsafe and unsecured during the rain season. The pitch of the roof is 4:12. The exposure of all field materials is NOT within industry tolerances. The overall condition of the roof is POOR. RECOMMENDATIONS AND WORK DESCRIPTION: • Remove and hall away all existing roofing materials including felt paper, ice shield and vents using proper dumpster. 1. Check roof deck for any inadequate (rotted) sheathing; locate and if necessary remove areas of moisture damaged decking, theses areas will be removed and new decking will be installed to match existing at a rate of $1.25.00 per sg. ft. *NOTE: All decking work to be billed as an additional cost to the contract* • Furnish and install new layer of protective Ice and Water Shield rubberized membrane on all eaves 3 feet up – minimum of 24” inside exterior wall line of the house, and centered in all valleys. • INTERWRAP RHINOROOF SYNTHETIC UNDERLAYMENT will cover the balance of the exposed wood decking. Proof Dura-Felt is a synthetic underlayment that fuses the technology of several different materials. The result is a lightweight, slip resistant product. Proof Dura-Felt can withstand several months of UV exposure and be used under virtually all types of finished roofing, it will not dry out or become brittle when exposed to the elements. • Furnish and install new GAF Architectural HD Shingles with Lifetime manufacturer’s warranty, color to be selected. • All shingles to have 5” exposure to the weather and all to be nailed with 1-1/4 in. galvanized roofing nails, four nails per shingle. • Furnish and install new hip and ridge capping, color to match shingles. • Furnish and install total of 12 roofing vent; 6-upper level; 3-lower level and 3-garage. • All plumbing stacks will receive new lead flashings stripped in properly. • Install 2-Velux Skylight in designated area, the skylights assembly will consist of: a) framed roof openings with headers-framing lumber run horizontally across the opening, headers to match existing lumber. b) framed-in-place skylight-mount the brackets on side of the skylights, set it in the hole and fasten it in place, wrap up the skylight’s curbs with Ice and Water Shield c) install flashing kit. http://www.domwebx.com/inet/literature.nsf/vcurrlitbyalias/ResidentialProductCatalog/$file/X20183-0913_Residential_catalog_LR.pdf#page=18 *NOTE: Others must do all interior work. Skylight supplied by Homeowner • Furnish and install new seamless aluminum pre-finished 5K gutters with new hangers and gutter apron, color TBD. • Furnish and install new aluminum pre-finished oversize 3” x 4” downspouts, color to match BASE BID: $9,275.00 NINE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED SEVENTY FIVE and 00/100’s DOLLARS ACCEPT: YES NO OPTIONAL: Install five (5) Perforated Drain Pipe, all labor and materials are included. I wish I could say this went well, but I am still waiting for Mr. Pluta to take responsibility for his mistakes. The job turned into a "wish I'd have picked someone else" when it could easily have been a "great job".
Because I had heard from others, while researching contractors, that the Village of Schaumburg was VERY strict about the requirement that ice shield extend up the roof from the eave to a point 24" inside the inside face of the drywall; I mentioned to Wes while we walked around the house that they would be strictly enforcing that code. In fact, I mentioned that I had heard that they expected you to run it 6' from the eave (which is two rows of shield. He nodded and dismissed my information. I doubt that he will take that approach again....
What follows sounds complicated, but it is simple math and a roofer should have these numbers printed in his head. Ice Shield comes in 36" rolls. Take an average house with an 8/12 pitch roof (8' rise over a 12' run). A little math will tell you that your 36" roll will cover 30" laterally from the eave as the roof rises 20" from the eave to the top of your shield. If you know that 24" of that must be inside your inside wall, that leaves you 6" from the inside of the drywall to the end of the eave. Most houses are built with 2x4 studs (3 1/2" deep, actually). Adding drywall and exterior sheathing takes you to 4 1/2". Add an inch for siding (brick is more), and you can see that if you have any soffit at all (that's the horizontal part from the frieze board or siding across to the facia (which is the outside board on the eave where the gutter might be hung)) you are going to come up short.
My house is built with 2x6 walls, is brick, and has 1/2" frieze and fascia boards and a 5 1/2" soffit. That gives you a run of 39" from the face of the fascia board, past the soffit, frieze, brick, sheathing, stud, and drywall. The math tells you that you have to go 47" up from the edge of the fascia to get up the roof to a point 24" inside the drywall. That's 11" more than one width of shielding.
All this is a long way of saying that Wes knew that one strip was not legal. He ignored me and thought he could get away with it, I guess he usually does. To make matters worse, he specified the underlayment, Rhinoroof synthetic. It's a bit better than the usual 15# felt which is commonly used.
Unfortunately, that is not the product which he ordered, and which his crew picked up (they did get the correct shingles). He ordered the regular felt. I will call this simply an error, and not an attempt to deliver a cheaper product; we all make mistakes.
I did not feel that I needed to supervise the job, I had hired a recommended contractor and, really, how hard is it to replace a roof? I know now that I should have. By the time I went outside to see how it was going, I saw that they were only using one strip of ice sheathing, and that they were using the wrong underlayment. At that point, things went into the toilet. The inspector showed up later in the day (Wes had forgotten to call and set an appointment for earlier so that the shield could be inspected without tearing off the new shingles). When the inspector saw the shield was short, he ordered all the shingles at that level to be torn off, and said he'd be back the next day. No shield was to be covered.
This story is too long. The short version is:
1. The guy who starts making ice shield in a 50" roll is going to make a lot of money.
2. You can put down two strips of 36" shield, or you can do some cutting and get maybe three strips per roll to add to the single roll for the required coverage.
3. Wes ordered and installed the wrong sheathing on half the roof. (He did bring a better sheathing for the other half AFTER I told the crew they were using the wrong material. Only the homeowner would catch this, as the inspector does not know what specifications are in the contract.) I choose not to have half of the roof torn off AGAIN to put down the contracted sheathing.
4. Wes tried to get away cheap with one strip of ice sheath.
5. These two mistakes made a one day job a three day job, and half the house has a cheaper grade of sheathing that we contracted for.
After all that, I offered to pay with a credit card, and Wes then informed me that he accepts only checks (and, I assume, cash). Most contractors know that folks use credit cards for points, and they take them. There is NO specification in the Pluta contract as to forms of payment, therefore he has no contractual right to demand check or cash only. As to his failure to perform the contract with the correct sheathing, he feels that the superior sheathing on half the house makes up for the cheap sheathing on the other half, and he is whining about his loss for tearing off shingles and installing an "extra" layer of ice shield. He has offered to cut $100 off the contract price "if I feel like I need a discount".
Apparently, Wes feels little responsibility for:
1. Attempting to avoid the building code.
2. Putting on the wrong underlayment.
3. Having to tear off and replace the roof while he was replacing the roof.
Wes has stated that it was his mistake to order the wrong underlayment. Clearly making an error there is much more benign than the alternative.
The roof is done, it is done well, and it should have been a great job all around. Unfortunately, Wes is trying to make me feel guilty about taking $100 off the bill for all of his mistakes. I don't. If he were the kind of contractor I could recommend, it never would have come up; he would have taken full responsibility for his errors and corrected the bill accordingly without my having to bring up all his mistakes. Instead, the problem was the building inspector for demanding code compliance; and I should be pleased with the roof covered in two different underlayments.
Wes is a nice guy, I don't think he tried to slip in the cheap underlayment on purpose, and I wish him well.
I will not do business with him again.

Wesley showed up when promised and provided a detailed written estimate including pictures of minor repairs needed on my roof. The transaction was handled in a very professional manner. He made some special accommodations in order to do the work on my schedule. I didn't rate the quality of the work because I have no way of knowing, but Wesley inspired confidence.
I originally bought an Angieslist deal for a roof inspection and repair credit. Wesley Pluta contacted me very quickly after I bought the deal. We had some water infiltration in January due to an ice dam, and I suspected one area of the roof needed some attention. So when Wesley came out, we looked at the roof together and decided upon a course of action that included looking under the shingles at the flashing in a couple different areas. The work was done by one of his guys a few weeks later. One area of flashing around a chimney needed to be replaced. The work was completed pretty quickly. I am assuming that this should take care of the problem should we encounter ice dams in the future, but won't really know until that happens. His work, of course, comes with a guarantee, so I'm sure if there is a problem he will fix it. He was very responsive to my emails over the course of the time it took to get the work completed. I also received a quote for siding replacement from him. We aren't doing that work right now, but it's nice to have.
I was very unhappy with the company, he came unprepared and didn’t pay much attention to details and the work that needed to be done in multiple areas of my home. The guy that came wasn't thorough in his inspection and it wasn’t worth the money.
Response from Pluta Construction Company
"She has a relatively new roof (done few years back), the architectural shingles appeared to be in Good condition, found no blow offs and/or broken shingles. No problems reported with roof leak(s) during the winter time. Customer seams to be more concerned about her siding and the window above garage then about her roof. She also made some comments about her neighbor house, the way the roof was designed and that she can see from her kitchen window water splashing over the gutter on her neighbor roof. I think I answered to all her questions, I was there for more then 1/2 hr."
