Exceeded all expectations. Dennis and his helper were amazing. Kept us informed when special order parts would arrive. Absolutely one of the best experiences I have ever had with a contractor.. In a Five Star ranking system I would give Preferred Oil & Propane Service at least 7 Stars.

They are excellent!! When I call to make an appointment, the lady on the phone is very friendly, helpful. I am a new customer . A friend gave me their number.. I go an appointment that worked for me. The technician was knowledgeable, friendly, fast, efficient. He did all the cleaning and repairs needed to maintain my furnace for another winter. I plan to have them service my furnace forever from now on! The price was also reasonable.

Amazing!!! He absolutely saved me and my family. I was in real trouble trying to get my heater repaired, originally using another local company that kept adding repairs and $$$$. I have a disabled daughter and lost my son this year too so it has been very stressful. Dennis fixed my entire heater and even custom built a gas line cover for the outside all for FREE!!!!! What a blessing!!! I experienced such kindness and professionalism. I would highly recommend this company for anyone looking for help with their heating needs.

I live in Alaska and was trying to sell my house in VT which is a big task when you do everything by email and over the phone. A home inspection revealed that all three heaters in the house needed replacement and the current ones were red tagged and shut off. So with no heat and it being October with a pending sale I needed heaters installed ASAP. Myself and my relator called and emailed people to no avail. I contacted a House Needs in Waitsfield VT to see if they installed the items they sold and they didn't but they recommended Dennis Smith at Preferred oil and propane. I sent them an email and on the next business day I got a call told them my problem and they said they would take a look by the end of the week. I gave them the combo to my house and a few hours later I got a call back and he had already been there and explained to me what the job would entail and what types of stoves he could install with the space available. He new the price and labor costs on 2 and got back to me a couple hours later with the information on the 3rd. We agreed on a price I made a deposit and he ordered the stoves. He started the job 3 days early and finished before the original start date. He sent me photos of the work done and advised that he would meet with the new home owners to explain how to operate the units. I was so thankful to have this work done in a timely and reasonably price fashion. I would highly recommend Preferred oil and propane for any heating needs. the customer service was amazing. Every time I sent an email it was promptly answered.

Terri, the lady who answers the phone, was fantastic. Her kind personality made me feel like I was really being listened to, and she called me with updates so I never worried that they'd forgotten about me.

The price on both days was higher than I expected, but maybe this reflects my lack of knowledge about how much these services actually cost more than anything.

They were fine. They do have a tendency to talk a lot, both on the phone and in person- so if you are in a hurry do let them know. I would definitely hire them again.
Dennis Smith from Preferred Oil has been servicing the furnace and taking care of plumbing needs in my Barre, Vermont rental property since 2004. I highly recommend him. He is professional, prompt and honest, I highly recommend him!!!!! I am never surprised by the bills. He will generally tell me a ballpark figure and the final bill always comes close to what I expected. When ever I call for service, he is there within the day or the next day.
The Office Manager, Terry is wonderful and keeps me informed about billing and service. She is pleasant and highly professional. I can always count on Terry to get the job going!!!!!! Over the years, I have hired many service providers for different repairs and I would rate Preferred Oil at the top of my list.
Recently a friend, who live on Beckley Street in Barre needed some plumbing done. I told her to call Preferred oil. Helen was extremely happy with the work that Preferred Oil did for her.
Thank you Preferred oil. I will suggest to the new owners to use your company. In this day and age, it is hard to get good customer service - Preferred Oil is top of the line!!!!! Margaret Davis
Dennis was wonderful to work with, punctual, polite, considerate, and did the work exactly as explained to me with his bid. He also took the time to be certain I knew how to operate the stove and thermostat. Very patient. They also cleaned up after themselves. Couldn't be more pleased with the price AND the work.

The lead technician knew his trade very well. His helper seemed to have everything go wrong all day long. It was unfortuneate for him, but did not impact me much.
During the inspection of the old oil system, it was determined that the unit was unsafe and unrepairable. I got advice on what to buy (I switched to propane) and a bid from POPS within 24 hours.
I got it installed by them within 24 hrs of the new unit's arrival from the factory. The job was accomplished on a particularly cold day but it was completed as bid.
They installed the new system in a unique suspended position without an added charge. The removed the old furnace and the old chiminey at no added cost. They transferred oil from the old tank to a tank in the house (about 100 feet away) at no extra cost.
Even though they did the work of the initial inspection and tuneup, they discounted that cost ($180) from the cost of the new furnace installation.
Before agreeing to the make and model they recommended, I checked its price from two other sources - both were higher.
We contacted Dennis Smith of Preferred about running a propane supply line in the kitchen floor (floor open at the time, not complicated), and installing a tankless , on demand water heater with attendant propane supply, vent kit, etc.
His estimate was reasonable for the tankless water heater relative to others doing that same job. But, given that we could source the heater ourselves and a contractor working with us could run all the water lines to it without incurring a mark-up on the heater, or steep labor fees to install the heater, we asked Dennis to simply run the propane lines. Our error was not clarifying his labor rate and getting an estimate for the reduced scope of the project.
Though the propane company complained that there was a leak in the lines he ran when they installed the tank, this turned out to be false and a second visit by the gas company indicated no leak. So the work performed did accomplish what we asked and is safe.
On the original estimate his labor rate was $96/ hour and another $40/ hr for an assistant. In practice he charged $110/hr to run simple black pipe, and to run a piece of flexible copper through the kitchen floor. In both cases he brought an assistant along at $45/ hour for what I judged to be one-person jobs where Dennis mostly supervised / trained his assistant at our expense.
His explanation was that "When you take away my profit..." ie. when we purchase the water heater ourselves without a hefty mark-up, etc. "I charge you more for my labor...". Hence my impression that this guy is self-righteous and not a square dealer. This feeling was amplified when he pinned the (what I thought was too hefty) bill to the message board with the note that "if we pay the same day there is a 10% discount." That felt like he was self-conscious about what he was charging and wanted to avoid discussion / contest by offering this "deal" if we paid immediately. Yuck.
I called him to discuss the bill which is when I got the self-righteous response about variable labor rates. Faced with the prospect of fighting him on his labor rate, the need for an assistant, and his lack of transparency -with an uncertain outcome- we paid the bill and sucked up what I think was about a $300+ premium. I will not call him again, nor will I recommend him to anyone.
Response from Preferred Oil & Propane Service
"Customer had gas lines run to 2nd floor and 3rd floor of house which needed 2 men because of working off a ladder and in some blind areaswhere piping needed 2 men. Our discount is for any one paying at time of job."

They arrived on time, called before arriving, went over what needed to
be done. The price they quoted was the price it cost for the service.
Additional costs were for materials which seemed reasonable and the
technician explained fully what the issue and the need was for the
parts.
They were neat and on time
We will use them again when needed.
They were awesome. They are very knowledgeable. I talked to Dennis Smith the owner of the company and I know they have 40 years experience in both oil and experience. I had one the employees come and install a pool heater. We had to have the propane fixed up by somebody with a license and so they came and did the propane part of the pool heater. I was happy with the previous times I had them out so I had them out this time as well. They were very friendly and very efficient. They arrive on time and if you have any questions they are very good about explaining things. I usually have a lot of question. I never used a propane heater for the pool before and so they made me relax about using it. I didn’t want to have propane lines running with my dogs around but they made sure it was above the ground and it was installed against the wall. They made sure the heater worked before they left and they went over it with me. The person who installed never installed this brand before so he opened it up to make sure it was running right. They made sure I was relaxed and comfortable before they left and I think that is important. They are very reasonable and my mom has them come back every year.
