First things first - about this review(er) - I'm a homeowner who's a magnet for crappy workers - there is not one project, from basic electrical (d***! they didn't anchor the electrical box in the wall) to extensive plumbing and a Bathroom Remodel Fail, that anyone has done right (d***! he laid floor tiles crooked...etc, etc...) So I don't enter into any project expecting to be happy, anymore. I hover, bite my nails, use a level to check everything, get very sharp and critical because I've learned all my lessons the hard way...through mistakes.
But I'm over the moon about Pro Home. Seriously. So believe me that this is a review that's informed from a lot of bad experiences w/previous providers. As one of Pro Home's referrals said to me when I called, "of course, as with any builder you should be on top of everything and constantly checking their work, but they were really good"...and I do agree. Also, the quote was clear and we didn't veer from the costs, except in an area where I requested extra work (adding overhangs) and we agreed on a Change Order.
*** I got multiple quotes locally and then thought I'd try outside of Boston region, which is how I found Pro Home (on Angie's List). Their pricing was much better than the prices I was getting from every service around Cambridge/Watertown, MA.
The owner, Eric Pinto, is great to work with and props to Brad Erlichman, his sales manager, who was critical in guiding me through this huge decision. Both Eric and Brad put a lot of time and care into planning the project with me. And Eric makes a lot of effort to get his crew trained properly in Hardie siding installs, so that was a big plus. I prepared an itemized list of things to work on before we met, and he followed the sheet step by step with me and with his foreman, Sergio. Eric's father tag-teams with Eric on the multiple projects they have going on, so someone from the family is often popping in to help, and to check the work.
This was a siding job and I'm a designer, so perfect sightlines were of paramount importance - the soffits/fascias/window trims and sills and, of course, the planks. There is a really organized system they practiced that kept everything in line, level, etc. OK, so I did notice one sill off level a little; they fixed it. But my old house isn't level, and the sheathing bows (c. 1905) so working with an imperfect frame was challenging. Somehow, these guys managed to match the lines at every corner of the house, from top to bottom and left to right. Really cool.
This is a crew that flies but moves quickly with purpose and care; a small crew stripped this total wreck of a home in two days and the house was wrapped one day later. The house is surrounded with plantings at the base of the house - I trimmed back the hydrangeas and other plants before the crew arrived, in anticipation of their being crushed in the falling debris. The crew did their very best to cover/protect and avoid tromping on and crushing the plants during the stripping phase, but some things can't be avoided and so a word of advice to other homeowners...just prepare in advance for this. I was prepared and so not surprised that some plants were trounced. (What I WAS surprised at was that the guys actually tried to help wrap up my super tall dahlias to keep them supported more than I had done.) They also put their ladders up on wood horses when they realized the grass in the backyard was yellowing under the equipment.
These guys are pretty quiet, polite, careful and, yes, they vacuum everything and put all equipment back (kept in my backyard for the duration), neatly and out of the way. O a few nails here and there were found but that's a few out of the thousands that had fallen in the grass, in the plantings, driveways, etc. No biggie. They really clean up thoroughly, every day.
The neighbors keep approaching me about how quickly and steadily these guys have been working, and what a fantastic job they're doing. If AL lets me post Before and After pix, you'll understand why my neighbors are all abuzz.
Btw, Sergio and his small band worked in the hottest possible weather this summer. It was my honor to make sure they had coolers of iced drinks, a few snacks, and one day I bought them a bunch of pizzas. I recommend to readers things like this, too. It's the least I could do to show my respect.
We are now almost at the end of the project. I'm going to miss working with these guys - they take what they do so seriously and I so value this. You'll never meet a more dedicated group of guys in the trades.
