They were very helpful and knowledgeable. It went well. They were here for the full time. I did have to reimburse them for some minor supply costs.

The initial contacts with the service were friendly and accommodating. Mandy answered all my questions. Although Jose arrived 45 minutes late he got right to work, was careful of my home, cleaned up everything and made helpful suggestions as well. All the tasks took about 4.5 hours. I would definitely call this service again. The price was a little high but well worth it as I had a short time frame before a guest arrived.
Bought this deal under company name "Fat Guy with a Hammer" which has since merged with this company. I think I just got lost in the transition--was told they forgot my appointment even though I had called to confirm. Then, showed up on rescheduled date hours late and without right equipment so it took three trips to get work done. At end of it all, I got 8 hours of handyman service for $800--where can I get a job that pays $100 per hour?
On plus side, the work that was done was done well.
Greg did some things quite well & others rather poorly. Purchased 16 hrs service thru the Big Deal, which turned out to be Greg & his assistant for one day. The asst repaired damage to the plaster caused by the earthquake; work was done really well. Greg installed 4 light fixtures; did very good electrical work. However, 2 of the fixtures were on walls that the old fixtures had covered that the new ones did not. Greg tried to just paint over those areas, but they really needed to be filled in with spackle or plaster first. He also put up a shot glass case on my wall. He suggested using screws that would really hold the cabinet in the wall, a good idea, but it is noticeably crooked. Asked Greg to install a new drain plug, because I didn't want to risk scratching newly resurfaced tub. Well, he scratched it anyway & then failed to install the new fixture, throwing the old (apparently rare) one away. Plug is so unique that I haven't been able to replace it. Can't use tub since.

We've used Greg and his team a few times and have always been impressed with the quality of his work and his friendly and knowledgeable demeanor. We contacted him early in the summer to schedule several repairs and were very clear both on the phone and through email what we needed. He was booked several weeks out, which was a disappointment, but we decided to wait until he was available. He arrived to the house later than expected and was not able to complete the work in the time allotted. We tried calling and emailing his office to schedule a follow-up visit but got no response. We are frustrated that we waited so long for him to be available, that he didn't give himself enough time to complete the work we requested, and that now we have to find someone else to finish the job that he started. We aren't surprised that he's so busy given the quality of work that he does, but we need someone who can be available and responsive when we need him.
It went really well. I sent him a picture of our door and listed the dimensions so Greg could be the best prepared when coming over. He brought over the molding dimensions needed and it really made it easy for him. Greg is very personal and not only cares about the work he does, but wants to ensure your satisfaction as well. He was running a few minutes late, but called 45 minutes before that to notify me that he would be. With traffic in DC, it is easy for this to happen and it would of been ok with me, but he still called to let me know.
I would refer him to anyone!
Thanks again Greg!
-Peter

Well contractor missed the agreed upon start date, After I called the contractor office I was told he was sick; so we agreed on a new start date. The contractor was late on the start date (due to heavy traffic). When I have dealt with other companies I usually receive a courtesy reminder call the day before the appointment with an estimated time of arrival. I never received it with this company. I felt like I did not get the good treatment with this company. On the good side is they did a good job with the power washed deck cleaning.
Went great - Greg's a great guy, and the woman (his sister, I believe) who answered the phone initially was thorough and friendly, explaining the pricing structure. There was an initial scheduling issue that resulted in a postponement of the original date, but that was no big deal and they called as soon as the emergency came up; no fault there. We didn't end up replacing the entire fan as I'd ordered a size too large to fit in the existing space; it would have been considerably more work, so we just got rid of the existing "boob light" and left the original fan in place.
I'd definitely use Fat Guy with a Hammer again - already working on a new list of things to get done.

Despite an initial challenge scheduling the appointment, the projects were undertaken with professionalism. The variety of projects were all handled well, though a floor tile repair might well have been finished better with some grinding of an elevated edge. They were safe and insisted on it as it related to electrical work.

There were problems with each project, and Greg and his assistant solved them. I think Greg really knows what he is doing and is good at problem solving in an older residence. I should note that he was a little late, but he did call to let me know. I was working from home all day anyway, so it really was not an issue.
My family just moved into this house, I'm a great handy man...but due to health reasons...I needed help. This "big deal" fit nicely, the operator came to my house for an interview, understood my position, and also understood that we'd work together, sharing our solutions to provide a final installation service. This arrangement worked nicely. He is open, takes into consideration before, during, and after the work. I believe this guy cares and wants his customers respect and his honestly and willingness to complete the job is undoubtable in my experience.

Greg came out with 2 workers/helpers a few minutes before 9am and stayed until almost 5pm. They installed an attic ladder, dug a whole in the ceiling first... the job was done under Greg supervision. It was well done and the job site was cleaned up afterwards. Everything was done according to his description of the job and there were no surprises... except for the 1945 newspaper piece they found in the attic!!! Greg and his crew were very nice, very helpful. Greg even helped me with replacing my door bell chime, which was not included in the work to be performed.
I had a great experience and would use Fat Guy with a Hammer again!
"Ella" (16th St Heights)
I went to home depot to buy fencing and they only sold huge rolls. He said he would bring the fencing to finish the the job, about 2 feet was needed. He said he needed to demolish a fencing job first at another property to acquire my fencing. It has been about 6 months and he still hasn't brought the fence or refunded me for the work. He wrote an email and is refusing to send me a refund.

While it is fortunate that nobody was hurt, it is true that an overnight burglary to this property resulted in a shattered custom-made double pane patio door leading from the family room to the patio outside. This was an extremely upsetting experience to the homeowner, and since it happened during the holidays, and on one particular day when the temperatures were expected to drop about 40 degrees with wind gusts of up to 50 mph expected later in the evening, it felt especially hopeless. I went immediately to Angie's List and found Fat Guy with a Hammer. His receptionist took my call at about 11:30 that morning and he was booked until after the holidays, but on hearing the circumstances she called him at his job site and he agreed to come the same day to secure the house until a new door could be ordered. He did, indeed, arrive the same day and worked until 7 pm that night along with his apprentice, even though he was planning to leave town for Christmas that weekend. He was compassionate and very sympathetic to our situation. I just can't put into words how he saved the day for us all. I will never forget him and will use him for whatever future carpentry and construction needs I may have. The quality of his work was excellent as was his attention to providing a safe and secure situation all around. A true Christmas Miracle. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

Greg is very nice, chatty, and easy to get along with. However, punctuality turned into an issue and started to deplete my trust.
The first time I needed an estimate, I was told he'd be there around 7pm. I got a call about an hour before saying he wasn't going to be able to make it, and we needed to reschedule. We rescheduled, but he wasn't there at the time specified. About a half hour passed so I called and was told he was 5 minutes away. About 20 minute after that he arrived (stating traffic was a mess...which it can be in DC).
Gave a great estimate. Was very kind - said if he's doing the retile work, all the other "add ons" (closet doors, recaulking, etc) would be free. Really appreciated that and I do believe he knows what hes talking about when it comes to handywork.
Then scheduling the work, I let them know I'd need to know a time frame since I was taking time off of work to be there. They said they'd arrive b/w 8-9am, and I asked them to call when they were on their way (since I would have to meet them at the property). No call... so after 9am, I called for a status check. They were on their way, would be there in a 20.
As the work began, Greg realized the subfloor in the bathroom was in poor shape. The project was much bigger than we originally thought. To his credit, he was totally transparent with me - I really do trust he knows what he's doing.
It took longer than expected, so instead of being done by Friday, it would go into Saturday. On Saturday we found out it would go into Monday. My concern at this point was that on Tuesday, I had heard nothing from Greg - and he had the keys to the place. Granted - this I believe was the day after the derecho - so phone service was crazy. But still, no word, phone, text, or email for over a day on whether the work was complete and whether I'd get my keys back which slowly eroded my trust.
Long story short - I got my keys back, the work got done. The grout did crack within a week or two and Greg came out quickly to fix. But, same story where he said he'd be there at a particular time, and was late - which made it hard to plan for getting to work on time / taking time off of work.
I like the work Greg does. He is creative in his vision. But follow up and punctuality, not his thing. I was hoping he'd be the "go to" handyman for me but it's too much stress and chasing him down to get things done. I never did chase him down for the second estimate - first experience was exhausting.

Greg is great! All you have to do is get the materials for your project and show him what you'd like done. He showed up on time and completed the job within an hour. As a bonus, while he was up on the ladder installing the shutters, he pulled down some dead ivy that I wasn't able to reach with my short ladder. After the project was completed, Greg gave me some advice on how to deal with the ivy that is trying to overtake my house and also answered some questions I had about my cable installation. Finally, Greg advised that I contact the manufacturer of the shutters I bought and ask for some more screws because he thought a few of the screws they sent were a little wonky. He showed me which shutter could be a problem, told me how to recognize if there is a problem, and offered to come back (free of charge) if the shutter should fail in the next year. All around a great guy and really knowledgeable. His office manager Angie is also really great ... she's friendly, knowledgeable about the business, and could answer all my questions in a short period of time. The invoice and payment was also a breeze.

I thought Greg (the fat guy) was great. Very knowledgeable and fair and honest. I like that you can make an appointment and ask questions via e-mail. His office assistant is very friendly and responds fairly quickly. Greg came out within the time frame and finished the job within the time he quoted. The prices are fair, and Greg is very honest. Look forward to working with him again!
