About us

The roots of Rick Horn Construction are grounded in the history of Horn Brothers. In the early 1970’s, nine brothers founded Horn Brothers Construction Company, myself being one of them. I can't praise the workers highly enough. Everything was professionally done. The entire area was cleaned at the end of each day. They made every effort to minimize disruption to my use of the spaces. One day there was a wind storm and a piece of fascia on my neighbor's house came loose and was flapping against the house. The neighbors were out of town. Bob Marburger, the manager on the project was able to pull the fascia down. He did it without any consideration of how he might get paid for his time. In fact, when my neighbor asked him how much he was charging for the fix; Bob told him to forget it. That is an excellent example of the type of person Rick Horn hires. On more than one occasion, they took my garbage to the curb or did other things that helped me out but were unrelated to their project. I have already hired them for another project. Their prices are fair--not the lowest or the highest; but the quality you will get for that fair price is excellent. Rick Horn Construction gets my highest recommendation with no reservation.

Our job was difficult, particularly because the team had to work around our house elevator, which could not be compromised because my brother, who is wheelchair-bound, lives with us and uses it every day. Rick and Bob were both innovative and meticulous about the work. Their workers were polite and cleaned up after themselves every day. I could also see how the knowledge of the older craftsmen was being taught to the younger ones. I was very comfortable having these men in my home, and would highly recommend them to anyone needing work done on their home, particularly if you have something tricky. These guys will figure it out.

Rick did over $100 k of work for me, but he never finished the job leaving very annoying little jobs. He also did not deliver on some insulation work that I paid for separately that has resulted in damage due to not delivering the promised work. I gave Rick an opportunity to fix the issue. I showed him the email where he told me the scope of work. He refused. I did not ask for the damages caused by his neglect just to fix the issue. Sadly, he didn’t care because he was already paid. I can’t trust Rick.
Response from RICK HORN CONSTRUCTION, INC.
"[Member Name Removed] does seem to have an unfortunately self serving memory. The job has been finished for about 2 years so it does seem odd that he talks about all those "very annoying little jobs this late in the job history. No long after the finish he did complain about the drywall repair work. I looked at the work and had to agree that it was not up to our standard but the crew leader at that time quite before I could fire him so I brought in a whole new crew who went over the entire job again and repainted everything at my expense and [Member Name Removed] agreed at the time that it was well done and with no further complaints we closed the job out. About a year and a half later [Member Name Removed] based on a bogus report from the heating guy complained that the heating pipes were bursting due to freeze thaw problems. Upon investigation the problem was not freeze thaw at all but simple old age. The hot water heating system is around 80 years old and was simply failing. In our contract we were to insulate the 2nd and 3rd floor but not the first which was for another tenet in the building. [Member Name Removed] wanted me to insulate the 1st floor for free which unfortunately would not solve the problem in any case. I explained that it was clearly not in the contract and was not the cause of the problem anyway. [Member Name Removed] threatened to sue but as he did not have even a little bit of a case and he did not bring the lawsuit. One might assume that the burden of proof is much lower for slander than a formal lawsuit would require.."

Very well, Rick and his team are total professionals. They always arrived on time and they took care to address every concern that I had. If I had to knock them anywhere, there were a couple occasions where email communication criss-crossed and some messages were missed. But, I learned that voice contact was the best way to go. Rick is a really great guy to work with. While it was a bummer to have to give him money every time I saw him, it was always nice to meet with him and catch up on things. Good people.

Work was performed in the most professional manner possible. Crew was on time every day. Great care was taken to protect the non-construction zones of my house. Outcomes exceeded expectations. Rick was responsiveness and fair in all aspects of the job.

This was a complex project involving removal of the ceiling to expose joists, establishing anchors on the joists, drilling through an external wall, and attaching a steel channel iron to the outside wall. With force applied to a long bolt attached to the joists, the external wall was pulled into place and the joists were re-inserted into their slots. The job was a success and the crew was pleasant and cleaned up thoroughly.
There was water on basement window and baseboard. Water was coming from deck above. I had several workers try to fix leak with no success. I called Rich and he came out to access problem. I wanted dry wall around window removed to see what was going on in wall and deck sealed once we could see were water was coming in. Rick took care of everything. Very pleased with workers he uses.
The project went well: Doug was a real artisan in performing the tiling and achieved a very nice effect. There were two delays from the countertop which delayed the project, but Rick and Doug were very flexible about rescheduling, including coming in on a Saturday to complete the job according to the (revised) schedule. Rick was also good at coming up with a design that kept the cost reasonable: no other contractor bid was under $10,000.

I contacted numerous contractors and Rick Horn was the only contractor that returned my call/email and was willing to schedule an appointment after an initial discussion of potential work. After the first visit, he scheduled the next meeting to discuss his thoughts and draft drawings. Scheduling the follow on meetings in advance was important as I lived out of town and needed to schedule leave and drive five hours to meet with him. Once the appointments were scheduled he never changed them and I so greatly appreciated his flexibility with my commute. We discussed ideas and worked on the drawings over a five month period and when I asked him not to start until I knew I could be in the area permanently, he was very agreeable.

On the day of the scheduled start, his crew was present and started the demolition. Rick?s crew, led by a very talented carpenter, Keith, was very neat, kind and considerate. All the subcontractors, from excavator, to plumber and electrician, HVAC, brick layers, and roofer were very skilled and knowledgeable about their trade. We lived in the house during this renovation and Keith kept me informed of the process so that I had plenty of time to clean cabinets and move personal items in order for them to work unobstructed. From beginning to end, this five month renovation went very smoothly. I kept Keith up to date on my concerns and he addressed them on the spot. When he noticed issues, he alerted me and we discussed his suggestions/changes/issues to the plan based on what he was finding with this 1948 home. As a result I spent more than originally planned but the changes were the right thing to do.

It has now been over six months since the renovation was completed and we are very happy with the results. From the outside, most folks can't tell where the old house ended and the addition began. We have not had the crew or anyone else come and fix anything that was done. The work was done right the first time.

Our experience with Rick Horn Construction was all positive, although the project took longer than initially planned, partly because we added two small side jobs to the initial contract. Rick's crew, led by Keith, were professional, punctual, friendly and tidy. They were very good at matching the new construction style to the existing style of the house. Sub-contractors were used for electric, plumbing, painting, carpet, ceramic tile, and brick masonry, and all were excellent. Removing the front wall of our house was a real engineering feat, and a professional engineer was used to design the flitch beam which the construction crew installed. A second, smaller flitch beam was installed above the outer porch wall, since one of the existing porch columns was removed to allow for the addition of windows along the entire front wall. The crew installed a total of 7 new double-hung windows, 4 decorative windows, inner and outer entry doors, and re-made the mantel over the fireplace, which had to be removed as part of the demolition of two existing built-in bookshelves. The finished result is outstanding, and looks like it was the original house instead of a new build, as we were able to save the original bricks and use them for closing in the front porch. We felt the price was reasonable, and we are delighted with the overall finished product.

We are supplying the tile and fixtures. We have worked with them before. They remodeled our kitchen in 2000 and we were very happy with their work. It is a lot of money but it is reasonable. They are here early and before they are supposed to be. They are great. They clean up behind themselves every day. We don't have to vacuum or do anything. They are wonderful.

They did a fine job....weren't prompt with arrive times. One day they didn't show up and didn't call. When the job was finished I tried to replace a switch plate that had been left off and the plate wouldn't cover the hole. I had to get a friend to fix it for me. I called the Construction Co and left a message describing the problem but no one returned my call. for this reason I will not choose them to remodel my bathrooms
Mr Horn is a very competent engineer and has a genuine interest in helping people. He assured me that the problem was relatively minor and we talked about how to proceed. He offered advice, we set up monitoring and outlined a path to repair including an estimate of cost.
We used Rick Horn Construction just a while ago. I believe the price was reasonable. They redid our utility room. They put a dry wall and false ceiling and made it very nice. He was good, all good.

Rick is very personable and his team was very professional. The crew is clean, friendly, and courteous with excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail and receptive to feedback. Timeline was longer than we anticipated, but some of this was us being first time homeowner (let alone renovation) not anticipating time for things being delivered (i.e. we did design with custom vanity and tile). We plan on a kitchen renovation within the next 2 years and will definitely work with Rick and Bob again.
They installed posts and a beam in my basement to support a sagging first floor. I am so happy with the result. The crew, Keith and Rick, could not have been nicer. It was clear they had experience in this area and worked very efficiently. Whole job took less than two days. As a bonus, they left my basement cleaner than it was before! I highly recommend this company.

I cannot speak for the entire company, but Keith and his nephew, Rick, did an awesome job. They were thorough, accountable and clean. I believe the products they use are quality. I would definitely consider them for future house projects.
