He's done a lot of work with me before. It was incredible. He's a great guy. We're renovation our house and he's very honest about exactly what I needed. He told me what kind of work that we can do ourselves.

The gentlemen did a great job, they were polite, thorough, and clean! They got right to the work, the bill was exactly what they said it would be even though they did some extras. I recommend them and would not hesitate to use them again.

BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE!

-selected house for purchase; arranged inspection of two fireplaces/chimneys by Fire Associates, Inc. (hereafter FA), a recognized authority

-FA found several areas needing replacement and repairs and gave us a very specific and detailed report, with photos (found chimneys were threat to life and property)

-selected Right Way Chimney Service (hereafter RW contractor) from Angie's List

-gave RW contractor the FA report, asked for proposal

-all parties agreed to proposal, it became a contract

-RW contractor received deposit, declared work complete, received full payment

-we requested another inspection by FA on the completed work

-FA found numerous discrepancies, ie, incorrect repairs and incomplete repairs

-FA provided us with a second detailed and specific report (some simple things - cobwebs are still where the work was to be done, cracks visible, and even scraps of wood now dropped in the flue)

-we expressed our displeasure to Angie's List

-turns out RW contractor advertises as a chimney repair with a license at the time we chose them, but in truth did not have a license (license is required for his type of work)

-we asked RW contractor for an explanation, none forthcoming

-RW contractor played dumb, dodged questions, gave implausible answers, blamed us, and our general contractor

-RW contractor was informed that a permit was necessary for a chimney repair, however, RW contractor couldnt apply for one since RW contractor has no license

-RW contractor informed us that if we wanted a permit it would be another $600, learned from city that the permit would be less than $200, we never responded to the communication for $600

-RW contractor got another company to apply for the permit, without our knowledge or request; even coming on our property and trying to enter the house using the lockbox key (luckily we had changed the code)

-we had no knowledge of RW contractor arranged meeting with the city on our property, entering in our fenced backyard until after this permit was issued

-it was unknown other company that applied for permit to perform six items that RW contractor knew he could pass omitting eight items from the original contract (RW contractor used only the outside items since he couldn't gain access into our home)

-this unknown other company never banged a nail; we have no clue who they are; only fulfilled legal requirement of the city to have a chimney work permit on file

-something that should be complete has further complicated home repairs and cost and will cost more money, and time

Sadly, who has RW contractor done this to in the past? No one climbs into their chimney to inspect work or check. Unless we had this inspection of his work we would have used the fireplaces and presumed they were safe. We could have had carbon monoxide poisoning or a fire. I hope this doesnt occur to anyone he has done work for before.

NO LICENSE! FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH CONTRACT! I booked the appointment two weeks out, and without having to confirm the appointment, Rich showed up early, was very friendly, and got right to work. He installed the gas log set in our fireplace very quickly, and even painted some of the exposed brass fittings black so they wouldn't stand out or distract from the logs. He was very helpful with questions we had, and offered some free solutions to update the look of our fireplace doors (why the builder chose to install fireplace doors with tacky gold trim I will never know). He told us to have the lines inspected every 5 years or so, just to make sure there were no leaks.
He is now my go-to guy for all things chimney-related.
Everything went well. They use drop cloth on floor and kept everything spotless. It is like taking your car for a service and they find some hidden problems that you are not aware of, but it ends up costing more money than the original estimate. However, it gave me a peace of mind that I know my fireplace and chimney are safe to use.
Jesus was terrific. On time, polite and professional. He cleaned one chimney quickly and inspected another. While I would have cleaned the other chimney had he told me to do so, Jesus informed me it was unnecessary at this time. This saved me another $140.
Great job and I will certainly use them again!
Thanks.
Rich and crew are no-nonsense, no drama, true professionals who are knowledgeable in their craft.
I'm a US Marine and left my wife to contend with a +50 year old fireplace to get checked out and repaired if necessary. After Rich's first visit, my wife knew he was a honest, trustworthy and an expert at his craft....plus a Army veteran to boot! I got the call asking if we should proceed with replacing our damper and updating to a modern system. Gave the confirmation to proceed and Rich did a super job within days of calling, plus he gave a 10% military discount. Bottom line: Don't mess around with others. Rich is the real deal and old school (does what he says he will do, without added costs). Semper Fi, Rob
Contacted Fiddler on the roof thru Angies list. They responded quickly. After getting quotes from a couple of vendors we decided on Fiddler. Rich showed up right on time and went straight to work. He was punctual, clean, priced right. No complaints here. Would definitely use him again and I would refer him to anyone needing their chimney cleaned. Thank you Rich!
Rich was on time and very informative. I was already doing some other home repairs and he worked around us. He cleaned and inspected our chimney. It looked great when he was done. He told me of some ways to keep the fireplace from allowing smoke to enter the house. He could see I was a DIYer and told me how to fix that on my own. I highly recommend him.
We needed to make repairs to a fireplace that we had never used, as we prepared our home to become a rental propery. Rich came in with a fair and reasonable bid that included all needed repairs and new custom glass doors and gas log set. All was done in a timely manner with great care. Highly recommended! Thanks Rich!!
We had several problems with our fireplace. It had started not drawing well despite the chimney having been cleaned a year before. A lot of fire smell was entering the entire house even with an apparently clean burning fire. Also the back wall of the fire box had a number of cracked bricks and an earlier patching job done by a former owner was crumbling. There was similar deterioration on the firebox floor.

Rich came on time for his estimate and immediately said the lower end of the flue might need to be recontoured because there was a flat spot that could cause the fire gasses to rebound downward. He said the cracking in the back wall was probably due to moisture seeping down through an old chimney cap. He told us at least some of the bad bricks should be replaced and any remaining cracks patched with the right kind of heat resistant cement. He also recommended a new concrete chimney cap to keep moisture from penetrating into the porous chimney bricks. He further suggested a vent to the outside at the back of the firebox to allow air to be drawn in to the base of the fire to assist in the drawing up of the gasses.

But we were all puzzled by why the fireplace was suddenly not working as well as it had over the years. Rich asked if there had been changes in the house, like new windows or vents. Yes! We had moved our furnace into the attic and changed the cold air return from near the floor to the hall ceiling. Apparently that caused an air flow in front of the fireplace that picked up the fire smell and drew it into the furnace, which propelled it throughout the house. Problem identified! Rich thought the air vent would solve this.

Before Rich came to do the job, I tried the gas fire starter with no logs on the grate. Surprise! Flames rushed out of the cracks in the fireplace floor! When Rich removed the brick around the line, he discovered a rotten pipe and no real connection between the gas line and the starter. Another problem caused by the shoddy work done by (or for) the previous owner.

Long story short, Rich arrived for the job exactly on time and spent the whole day with a helper doing all the work he had recommended. It was noisy and dusty, but he put a tarp covering the fire box and also placed tarps on the floor. We added coverings for the furniture. In the afternoon we asked him to replace some more bricks so there would be less visible patching. He managed to do this and was done before we had guests in the early evening. We have since tried the fireplace and it works fine!

We did have a little issue about the final bill, as the extent of his work had changed during the job and the effect was not clearly communicated. We finally worked it out, but it pointed out to both of us the need to be clear about work changes. We recommend Rich not only for his timeliness and good work, but his thorough diagnosis of, and solutions for, our fireplace problems.

<br /
